Yawn … yet another budget crisis looms

022813-toon-luckovich-ed

————————————-

When a picture is worth a thousand words, go with the picture.

As my colleague Mike Luckovich depicts so well, the sequester is yet another in what is now seems like a never-ending series of artificial budget crises in Washington. What was once extraordinary has become ordinary.

The sequester, for example, is the bastard child of a previous crisis in 2011, when Republicans threatened to push the country into default by refusing to raise the debt ceiling. To get past that crisis, Washington created the sequester, timing the new crisis for after the election and designing it to be so painful to both parties that when the time came, Democrats and Republicans would surely be forced to compromise to avoid it.

They underestimated their own — or each other’s — intransigence. House Republicans have passed a plan to replace the sequester by gutting a series of government poverty and social service programs, in other words putting the burden entirely on those already suffering It contains no new revenue and no cuts in defense.

Democrats, on the other hand, propose a mixture of cuts and revenue increases, with President Obama committing publicly to a ratio of two dollars in cuts for one dollar in new revenue.

But never the twain shall meet, apparently.

Business Insider conducted an interesting poll, asking 550 people which of three proposed budget solutions they prefer. The plans were taken from proposals by House Republicans, the House Progressive Caucus and Senate Democrats, although those polled were not told where the plans originated.

Here’s what the poll found:

Surprisingly, the plan that polled the strongest was the House Progressive Caucus plan. More than half of respondents supported it compared to sequestration and just a fifth of respondents were opposed….

Shockingly, 47 percent of Republicans preferred the House Progressive plan to the sequester. This means that Republicans supported the House Progressive plan just as much as they supported their own party’s plan…. Opposition to the House Republican plan was strong, with 57 percent preferring the sequester to that plan.

“Instead of complaining about the bitterness of lemons, why not make lemonade instead and enjoy yourself? Life is too damn short to harbor the kinds of anger and resentment we see thrown around here, and I have no use for that.”

Well, you sure get obviously angry a bit here on this blog (as in this very post) so I don’t know why you say you have no use for anger and resentment.

I stand by what I said about defending politicians rather than positions. That, I think, is why there is so much animus and inability resolve political problems in America today. A month or so ago, I criticized Obama and other liberal Democrats for pushing gun control measures that aren’t really going to do much to reduce gun violence such as we see in Chicago and said that it showed a far interest in banning guns than in solving the problem. And you jumped all over me in a very angry way, saying I had no business talking about the problems of Chicago when I don’t live there. Well, Obama (and most Democrats in Congress) doesn’t live in Newtown either. Your attack made NO sense at all, given the fact that over 80% of gun-related murders are committed with handguns, a good percentage of which are possessed illegally. I could only chalk it up to you being liberal. Why else do you fly off the handle at times in defense of Obama and Democrats? Show me where you have done the same with Bush or Republicans.

Nothing like a liberal democrat name calling and hurling insults when facts are presented (and he couldn’t even name a lie that Hannity told when asked).

In any event, only in the land of liberal Oz does a decrease of 2.4% in an increase in spending warrant the release of illegal immigrants, more air pollution, airliners colliding mid-air, children and old people starving in the streets like Third World dwellers, blah blah yawn.

Re: Chicago’s gun safety laws

They are useless if the city’s around them have none.

From the NYT

More than a quarter of the firearms seized on the streets here by the Chicago Police Department over the past five years were bought just outside city limits in Cook County suburbs, according to an analysis by the University of Chicago Crime Lab. Others came from stores around Illinois and from other states, like Indiana, less than an hour’s drive away. Since 2008, more than 1,300 of the confiscated guns, the analysis showed, were bought from just one store, Chuck’s Gun Shop in Riverdale, Ill., within a few miles of Chicago’s city limit

There was no anger in that post. Just because YOU perceive something doesn’t make it real or a fact.

Bush is no longer president. Did you not realize that? When Republicans do something worth defending, I will defend them. You are not my father, brother, uncle, boss, supervisor, or anybody else whom I need to “show” anything. I don’t post here to please you or anybody else. If you take that as some “angry” post that you seem to think I do often, then do what you must. When you and I have any kind of relationship where I have to show you something, then I will.

And you jumped all over me in a very angry way, saying I had no business talking about the problems of Chicago when I don’t live there.

No, I said that you, and everyone else using Chicago as a talking point, needed to stop using that if you were not doing anything to help them with their problem. I was and still am sick and tired of people trotting out the “victims” when it suits their talking point and then summarily dismissing them in the next sentence.

If you’re so concerned about Chicago and their gun violence, what have you done to help them? You’ve had more than enough time to do something, right?

Funny, the failure of Congress and the President to deal with the crisis of our deficit/debt (and it is a crisis that dwarfs anything written about in this paper, unless a plague strikes the US real soon) is all Republicans’ fault? Harry “I’ve never seen a budget bill I like” Reid and Democrats have nothing to do with it? The President, who signs bills into law, has nothing to do with it? And Nancy “We don’t have a spending problem” Pelosi have nothing to do with it? (I loved Pelosi’s line, she must be off meds, stupidest line since you have to pass the bill to see what’s in it).

This is simple inaction by politicians on both sides of the aisle and particularly a do nothing President. Plain and simple. $85 billiion in a budget approaching $4 trillion is hardly a ‘crisis’. The crisis in leadership, however, is a different thing. Buck starts and stops at 1600 Pennsylvania for leadership. Been looking for something to come from there, other than a new haircut or dance steps, for a long, long time.

“Given your supposed extensive reading on legal subjects, you should have figured this out a long time ago.”

I was asking for a logical and not legal basis for it (please go and re-read my post), Sherlock. And it appears you have yourself not figured out that the legality of a number of things has shifted/developed and is shifting/developing rapidly. For example, abortions and gay marriage. I saw a report the other day that in the state of MA, TG students will be allowed to declare a different gender and use the restrooms of that sex. We are not in Kansas anymore, in case you haven’t noticed.

“Minors are legally incapable of entering into binding legal contracts. Marriage is, when stripped down to its legal ‘bones,’ a binding legal contract. Therefore, minors can’t get married without parental consent.”

They are certainly “capable” of entering into “binding legal contracts” – just not permitted in every case:

How did I miss the Full Metal Jacket clip?

True story about that movie. I was just back from either Basic or Germany on leave when it came out. My brother and I saw it the first showing (afternoon) the first day. I am sitting there quoting the lines as gunny is eating butt. I can’t figure it out until the end………. based on the book, The Short Timers……….. I had read that book a million times as a teen lol. They actually followed it pretty well.

What are you mumbling about. It is very obvious the Catholic Church is gay so they should be consistent and come out for gay marriage.

Which is why I am a huge proponent of term limits.
Three 2 year terms for Congress
Two 4 year terms for the Senate
One 6 year term for President.

Muscles that don’t get decent circulation, weaken, whither and die.
I think that is what we are seeing in DC.

Ain’t gonna happen though. People don’t give up power easily and the voters who could force the issue all think THEIR guy is doing a great job.

I snuck it in earlier when nobody was watching. JHM caught it though. :)

I’ve been meaning to track down a hardcover copy of that book. I try to avoid buying paperbacks because I will wear them out. I’ve just been too lazy to get one.

I can’t believe republicans think we should slow spending, how could we pay for stuff like this ?

The infamous Las Vegas bash held by the obscure General Services Administration wasn’t that unusual after all. The lavish 2010 conference, which cost over $800,000, had lawmakers fuming last year. But a new congressional report shows taxpayers picked up the tab for at least 894 conferences in 2012 — to the tune of $340 million.

Those figures only cover “big-ticket” conferences — or those that cost $100,000 or more — so the total figure is likely higher.”

We need to tax the rich, I heard they went to smaller size shrimp at these conferences.

Towncrier — “I was asking for a logical and not legal basis for it (please go and re-read my post), Sherlock.”

Listen, Chimpleton, there’s nothing so magical about you or your writing that you always communicate your intent to all readers with 100% clarity, and there’s nothing so magical about your reasoning faculties that you automatically understand what everyone else here says or means with 100% accuracy.

So you can take that “Sherlock” garbage and shove it where the sun never shines.

“And it appears you have yourself not figured out that the legality of a number of things has shifted/developed and is shifting/developing rapidly.”

Irrelevant; you asked about marriage and minors. If you wanted to cast the net more widely, you need only have asked. Your snide and insulting response is unnecessary and unwarranted.

“For example, abortions and gay marriage. I saw a report the other day that in the state of MA, TG students will be allowed to declare a different gender and use the restrooms of that sex. We are not in Kansas anymore, in case you haven’t noticed.”

Irrelevant; you asked about marriage and minors. If you wanted to cast the net more widely, you need only have asked. Your snide and insulting response is unnecessary and unwarranted.

“They are certainly “capable” of entering into “binding legal contracts”

Since I was applying the word “capable” in its legal sense and usage and since you don’t have any formal legal education, your confusion and lack of understanding is expected and noted.

That wasn’t my point. I was saying that you cannot really expect others (not in the military) to not be able to harshly criticize a person who is supposed to be working for them. The POTUS and Congress ultimately work for and should be serving the people who elected them. In other words, don’t get rankled when people criticize Obama just because you feel they should not disrespect him – they are not in the government like you are and have every right to call him on the proverbial carpet.

“Seems as though you’re a bit angry there. Maybe you should take your own advice and calm down a bit.”

Not really, though I can see why you might interpret it that way.

Because that’s part of his regular routine. From what I can tell, he prefers to misrepresent the positions and arguments of others rather than asking them to clarify themselves. I personally believe that it belies a central lack of honesty on his part.

I say no limit to the number of terms, just the number of successive terms. Say 2. There is no doubt an electoral advantage to being the incumbent. If the politician is any good, he/she can be re-elected after sitting out a term.

Reminds me of a dog book I had. I was going to give it away, but after a while I realized it might be a long time before I say the person I was going to give it to, so I decdied to put in on eBay. I bought it for $10 and sold it for over $150!
