Yawn … yet another budget crisis looms

022813-toon-luckovich-ed

————————————-

When a picture is worth a thousand words, go with the picture.

As my colleague Mike Luckovich depicts so well, the sequester is yet another in what is now seems like a never-ending series of artificial budget crises in Washington. What was once extraordinary has become ordinary.

The sequester, for example, is the bastard child of a previous crisis in 2011, when Republicans threatened to push the country into default by refusing to raise the debt ceiling. To get past that crisis, Washington created the sequester, timing the new crisis for after the election and designing it to be so painful to both parties that when the time came, Democrats and Republicans would surely be forced to compromise to avoid it.

They underestimated their own — or each other’s — intransigence. House Republicans have passed a plan to replace the sequester by gutting a series of government poverty and social service programs, in other words putting the burden entirely on those already suffering It contains no new revenue and no cuts in defense.

Democrats, on the other hand, propose a mixture of cuts and revenue increases, with President Obama committing publicly to a ratio of two dollars in cuts for one dollar in new revenue.

But never the twain shall meet, apparently.

Business Insider conducted an interesting poll, asking 550 people which of three proposed budget solutions they prefer. The plans were taken from proposals by House Republicans, the House Progressive Caucus and Senate Democrats, although those polled were not told where the plans originated.

Here’s what the poll found:

Surprisingly, the plan that polled the strongest was the House Progressive Caucus plan. More than half of respondents supported it compared to sequestration and just a fifth of respondents were opposed….

Shockingly, 47 percent of Republicans preferred the House Progressive plan to the sequester. This means that Republicans supported the House Progressive plan just as much as they supported their own party’s plan…. Opposition to the House Republican plan was strong, with 57 percent preferring the sequester to that plan.

wahoo, you raise some very good / discussion worthy points, I wish I could get to ‘em all, but I’ll just do this one for now:

more interested in raising taxes on the wealthy than in reducing defense spending. I personally was surprised by that – I would have pegged their priority to be more on defense spending.

Not that I claim to speak for these congrefsfolk, but I am very sympathetic to the go-slow approach on defense cuts.

Yes, we have too many people in too many far-flung places, we spend too much on superexpensive bang-shoot things.

But if you just start taking a machete to this major economic component, you’re going to inflict horrific hardship on many Americans in the “food chain,” so to speak–the guy who doesn’t do a brake job on the defense contractor’s daughter’s car because he can’t afford to have ‘em done because the project hours got cut…

I’m as much of a peacenik as the next guy, but I’d do these cuts slowly and humanely as possible.

There’s your proof positive that even the Founders considered the Consititution a living document…If they didn’t want it to be changeable, then they wouldn’t have written an amendment procedure right into it.”

Indeed…changeable through the amendment procedure, not by interpreting it in an illegitimate way because you have given yourself the power of judicial review or because you want to do something not really permitted (as an enumerated power) by it (as have Washington, Hamilton and other presidents, and the Congress numerous times). That is how standards become meaningless over time.

I KNOW a few people who don’t understand the difference between sitting in a church each week for 20 years vs spotty attendance while being on the membership roll for 20 years.

I’ve been a member of the same church since getting baptized around 30 years ago. Although I’ve lived in different places, I never changed my membership. When I go home, I attend church at the same church. If someone did a background check, I’d be listed as a 30 year member even though I haven’t regularly attended in 20 years.

Seems as though some people focus on things as though life is a series of binary, and only binary, choices. In actuality, things are much more complicated and can not be accurately distilled down to an either/or choice. Somebody stated earlier that most everyone is known by the company they keep in reference to this Black Liberation stuff. If that’s the case, then most of y’all conservatives that come here on a daily basis are actually RINO’s or even liberals as you can’t seem to stay away from this place, even though you all swear Bookman is Liberal to the point where his blood type is L.

Gamesmanship prevails. Anybody with a political skin in the deficit fight is posturing for their constituency.

I agree with an earlier comment. Simpson – Bowles is a place to start if we’re finally serious about deficit reduction. Nobody likes it, so it must be fair.

And as long as our national leadership is accountable to their segment of a profoundly polarized electorate, we’ll never get our spending under control.

There’s a drastic measure out there someplace that just might work. Some higher power – above the fray – Oprah maybe – needs to decree that Simpson – Bowles is our salvation – our only chance for achieving and maintaining fiscal sanity.

The groundswell of public approval will imbue our elected leadership with new found integrity and courage – not to mention plausible deniability if S-B goes ka- flooey.

“It was Oprah’s fault!”

That’s quite a burden to put on OW. I would have suggested the Pope, but he… well, you know.

stands:

An interesting view. Knowing my own political views and having read yours on the blog, I would hazzard a guess that you are to my political left overall. Interesting then, that I am more in favor of defense cuts than you appear to be.

I recognize that government spending is a critical component of GDP (Consumption+Investment+Goverment+Net Exports) but at the same time, I also believe that we spend far more than is necessary on defense, especially as we rotate into a time of peace (hopefully). It would be contrary to our history to not reduce government spending on defense. As I mentioned on the blog the other day, my thought would be to enact targeted stimulus that would be deficit neutral (or even deficit reducing) to deal with the Sequester cuts currently contemplated. I would enact the same approach to deal with defense cuts. In any period of austerity overall or belt-tightening on defense, we need expansionary policy in other areas to offset the natural decelaration on economic growth caused by the reduction in goverment spending.

Or is not smart enough to know what the theology really is or has become. But I don’t really think Obama falls into that category, so I would agree that his continued “membership” in that church is problematic to those who wish to be intellectually honest. It is interesting to see how liberals attempt to defend him on this issue and others like it. It’s like they really think he is a good man or something. I had a recent experience with a priest of a major religion whose pontiff just got fired. The priest told me that church membership is a prerequisite when making any special requests of the clergy. It doesn’t matter that you go to church every week and throw money if the collection basket. If you don’t place your money in a proper church envelope carrying your name and number then the only person that knows that you’re giving is God and that’s just not good enough for the clergy.

Libertarians are a good example of this. Most people on the left and right defend their men and women in their party to the death, which leaves them in a very bad position when these politicians fail or do wrong. I am strongly conservative, but you won’t find me defending people like Bush or other prominent Republicans. I pride myself on being different from everyone else around me. If you question my defense of Obama’s administration, you would have lost it to hear me defend Bush.

I give a rat’s ass less about the parties. I give a rat’s ass less about the ideologies. What I care about is my country, and I’ll do whatever it takes to defend it and ensure it’s survival. I have no problem with defending my president when I think he needs defending, and I have no problem with calling him out when I think he’s wrong. THAT’s what being independent is all about, not simply being a mushy mouthed person trying to straddle the middle ground because they are incapable of forming their own views.

“That is because YOUR position was a far right wing fanatical position that makes no sense and you consistently refuse to listen to anyone or concede a point. You are right and everyone else is wrong is the attitude you present here.”

Not intended to be an ironically self-defeating statement.

And the hits keep on coming…

From Talking Points memo, about the Woodward “scandal”:

“Just yesterday, Red State’s Erick Erickson wrote a fantastic, thoughtful piece about how harmful and embarrassing this phenomenon is.

“Conservatives are trying so hard to highlight controversies, no matter how trivial, we have forgotten the basics of reporting,” he wrote. He used the Obamaphone “scandal” as an example, but it works just as well in this instance. Conservative writers were so thrilled to have a scandal to lay at Obama’s that they didn’t bother to verify it, and ended up owning themselves. ”

So we should expect to hear retractions from many posters today, admitting they were wrong…

Towncrier: I am strongly conservative, but you won’t find me defending people like Bush or other prominent Republicans.

That’s your thing and do it as you must. I am strongly American, and I will remain that way until I become worm food. Where you see me as defending a person, I defend America. I refuse to let anybody else cheapen the Office of the President because their personal feelings are hurt. This country is about more than self. Too bad the selfish will never figure that out.

Or care to use it.

It is amusing how many times he works to put people in the box he wants them to be in then gets frustrated because that person laughs at his assertions.

I realize you think Town Crier that stringing a few big words together makes you seem like an intellectual, but they have to GO together in a logic and grammatical manner for that to be the case.

That mish mash of crap is illogical, and says nothing other than a fool tried to string some big words together in order to sound intellectual.

As for the sequester, I see lack of leadership all over.

If Republicans were good with it when they overwhelmingly approved it then why haven’t they just washed their hands and walked away?

With that said, Obama didn’t do too damn good of a job negotiating because he signed the bill into law and now like the Republicans he doesn’t like it that much.

The excuses on both sides are both sad and amusing as well as tiresome.

I’ll agree with you on that. We don’t know whether a president is good or bad in our lifetime. It takes far too long for their advocated policies to be evaluated. We’re really just now getting to the point where Reagan’s Trickle Down Economics is truly being felt. The point that most everyone misses though, is that, the president can advocate for damn near anything they choose. If Congress doesn’t legislate and pass it, it will never come to pass.

Get: not sure if that is the answer. A pedophile is a pedophile. Married or not they will molest kids given the opportunity. That degenerate at PSU was married with kids. That didn’t seem to stop him one iota.
