Last night on CNN, Bob Woodward made national news when he complained that he had been threatened in an email exchange with an unnamed top White House official. According to the Watergate legend, the “very senior” official warned him that if he reported news about the sequestration in a way the White House did not like, “you will regret doing this.”
Put that way, it certainly sounds ominous. And just to drive the point home, Woodward repeated the claim in an interview with Politico:
“Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’”
“They have to be willing to live in the world where they’re challenged,” Woodward continued in his calm, instantly recognizable voice. “I’ve tangled with lots of these people. But suppose there’s a young reporter who’s only had a couple of years — or 10 years’ — experience and the White House is sending him an email saying, ‘You’re going to regret this.’ You know, tremble, tremble. I don’t think it’s the way to operate.”
Again, that does sound potentially serious, particularly since this “threat” struck home with someone as experienced and presumably tough as Woodward.
As it turns out, however, the very senior official in question was Gene Sperling, who as head of the National Economic Council is not exactly in a position to order drones rained upon Woodward’s increasingly big head.
The e-mail exchange between Woodward and Sperling has also been released. Here is what Sperling wrote:
“I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. My bad. I do understand your problems with a couple of our statements in the fall — but feel on the other hand that you focus on a few specific trees that gives a very wrong perception of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here.
But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim. The idea that the sequester was to force both sides to go back to try at a big or grand bargain with a mix of entitlements and revenues (even if there were serious disagreements on composition) was part of the DNA of the thing from the start. It was an accepted part of the understanding — from the start. Really.”
And here’s how Woodward responded after this supposed “threat”:
“Gene: You do not ever have to apologize to me. You get wound up because you are making your points and you believe them. This is all part of a serious discussion. I for one welcome a little heat; there should more given the importance. I also welcome your personal advice. I am listening. I know you lived all this. My partial advantage is that I talked extensively with all involved. I am traveling and will try to reach you after 3 pm today. Best, Bob
I’ve been in more than my share of those conversations, with everybody from county commissioners to U.S. senators. It’s ridiculous for Woodward to claim that he felt threatened or intimidated by it. In the first place, the context makes it clear that Sperling was warning Woodward that if he reported things that way, he would regret it because it would be factually incorrect. There was no other implication, and Woodward’s response makes no mention that he felt threatened in any way.
Even if you try real real real hard to imagine Sperling’s email as some threat, it in no way justifies Woodward’s collapse upon his fainting couch.
When Woodward and Carl Bernstein were breaking the Watergate story 40 years ago, Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, famously warned Bernstein that Washington Post owner “Katie Graham … is gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that’s published.”
THAT was a threat.
Indeed, Nixon plotted how to revoke federal licenses for TV stations owned by the Post as a way to get back at the newspaper.
“They should give some thought to taking on the guy that went into Cambodia and Laos, ran the Cambodian bombing campaign,” an angry Nixon was taped as telling an aide in the White House. “What do the hell they think they’re doing in there?” Later he abandoned that approach, telling the same aide that “We’re going to screw them another way.… They don’t really realize how rough I can play.… But when I start, I will kill them. There’s no question about it.”
Sad to say, Woodward’s grotesque exaggeration of his exchange with Sperling diminishes both his standing and credibility.

Read the email exchange earlier.
Good to know that taken into context it isn’t exactly as some would like to believe.
With that said, this story will be gone in a week. I don’t really see much substance either way. WH will downplay it and the right will attempt to get as much traction as possible to keep the story going.

Mr. Bookman, you don’t get to tell someone whether they feel threatened or not. While I personally feel as you do that the exchange doesn’t really seem particularly threatening, that doesn’t necessarily mean it couldn’t be interpreted in another way by Mr. Woodward, for whom this message was originally directed. Read an e-mail three times, and it can come across in three different tones.

That may well be, but I can’t see someone as accomplished and as experienced as Mr. Woodward reading that passage as being SO threatening that he needed to spread the notion around amongst the chattering class in DC. Mr. Woodward’s certainly within his rights to feel whatever he felt, but once he’s disseminated the meat of the conversation, he would have to expect that people are going to read the conversation with their *own* thoughts, opinions and biases, not his own.
IMO, either Woodward really was intimidated by the conversation (which I personally find implausible) or he was trying to gin up some coverage and attention (and who in Washington isn’t?).

Amazing how the “legitimate” media continues to turn on one of their own when he refuses to comply with the agenda of acting as O’s biggest cheerleaders.
Woodward’s one of the few to actually tell the truth about the sequester mess and turn his cross-hairs on the White House and place the blame where it actually belongs: with the Administration. Of course, the “legitimate” media cannot have this.
Now Jay, as a columnist and someone who editorializes, is obviously mostly biased to one side, and we recognize this. But just take to google to find all of the supposedly impartial journalists who’ve now turned on a man they revered not even two weeks ago as a paragon of virtue because he refuses to drink the Administration’s Kool-Aid, and is actually interested in finding truth, not ideology.
So they seek to undercut Woodward by gloaming onto this story, all to continue the agenda of protecting O at all costs.
Even in saying this, Jay’s snark to undercut Woodward’s position on the sequester and his exposing of the truth therein is a symptom of a much larger problem:
The Fourth Estate is dead. Nothing more than a closet full of puppets for the White House and the Democrats. They refuse to investigate this White House. They take all of their talking points from this White House. They are basically told what and how to think and write by this White House.
In fact, I’d place every dime I had betting on this “story” regarding Woodward as a smoke screen used by the White House to take all attention away from Woodward’s refusal to go along with the other lemming’s “official” sequester stories.
And Woodward isn’t the first person told by this White House that, “You’ll regret this.”
It doesn’t matter who is in the White House. Rep or Dem. It is the Fourth Estate’s role to act as a check on the power the Executive Office can wield outside of the official constraints of the government.
They attacked W every chance they could get. Mostly for good. Sometimes (thinking Dan Rather here) for ideological spite. Regardless, they did everything they could to check W.
Why don’t they behave in this way with O? Remember some of the positively stupid stories the media would run about W? Like how much golf he played, that it was too much and how he should be doing his job, not playing golf? O has played more rounds of golf in 4 years than W did in 8. So why isn’t THAT a story? The media mostly did its job with Clinton. But not with O. The media just gives O the rubber stamp.
It’s very, very frightening, how the free press is no longer free in deed, yet proclaims that they are. It’s insidious how they role over for this Administration.
We are Rome. And by my clock, it’s about 400AD. Or, to put it another way, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “Society will develop a new kind of servitude which covers the surface of society with a network of complicated rules, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate. It does not tyrannise but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.”
If this isn’t Obama’s America, I don’t know what isn’t.

K. Soze — “You and Jay are assuming implausible based upon your own experience. That’s great.”
Um, yeah, I *said* that already. And you *quoted* me.
“Please explain what that has to do with Bob W.’s experience? Do you know Bob W. and Mr. Sperling personally? Were you the fly on the wall or on the phone during that initial yelling spat between Woodward and Sperling?”
I’m not *obliged* to know Mr. Woodward or Mr. Sperling, or to have been present in order to articulate *my* opinion on the matter.
“If not, I’d suggest you and Jay quit ass-u-me – ing….”
Do you know me? Are you looking over my shoulder right now as I’m typing this?
Look, Woodward’s been a reporter and writer for 40+ years. Given that, I find it very difficult to buy the idea that the conversation *as reproduced above* was so all-fired intimidating to him given how much he’s seen, done and experienced in his career. I’m not making claims or assertions about what he felt — I’m simply saying that I find it hard to believe.
Is that more clear?

This is an example of a guy who writes books and was lucky enough to catch the President in a denial he later had to move away from. The rest is not really relevant. So what if the President’s folks dreamed up sequester. Congress agreed and it’s their baby now, too.

Jay’s whole premise is Woodward feeling threatened from Sperling. I suggest that if Sperling and Woodward are truly friends, as their email exchange implies, there are threats from other people which have not been made public. Woodward did not back down from Nixon, and Obama is a cream puff compared to Tricky Dick.
It’s also highly indicative of Obama supporters that many of the young media types don’t know who Woodward is, or did not until this came up and they learned. Blind fools.

“When did Bob Woodward become such a weenie?”
Do I sense a bit of weenie envy (given his relative prominence to yours)?
“In the first place, the context makes it clear that Sperling was warning Woodward that if he reported things that way, he would regret it because it would be factually incorrect.”
It was not factually incorrect. From Politico:
“Obama personally approved the plan and later signed it into law. Woodward was right, several congressional officials involved in the talks told us.”
Well, you should just read the whole piece:
“Even if you try real real real hard to imagine Sperling’s email as some threat, it in no way justifies Woodward’s collapse upon his fainting couch.”
Have you ever thought that Woodward’s claim was based on more than just the letter and possibly on other personal experiences he has had with the administration? And exactly what justifies you playing the role of High Priest to the Obama administration? Is it possible for you to be something other than a cheer leader? Again, from Politico:
“The feud also feeds a larger narrative because, like many others, Woodward thinks this is a very thin-skinned White House that does not like being challenged on the facts.”
Is Lanny Davis exaggerating or lying as well?

Since it is very clear there was no threat in the email, the dead-enders are trying to invent other sources of the threat: “Maybe it came in the earlier conversation!” “Maybe it came from somebody else!!”
Or maybe you should just admit the truth. Woodward made it very clear that he was referring specifically to the email.
On CNN:
“WOODWARD: Well, they’re not happy at all, and some people kind of, you know, said, look, we don’t see eye to eye on this. They never really said, though – afterwards, they’ve said that this is factually wrong, and they – and it was said to me in an e-mail by a top –
BLITZER: What was said? Yes.
WOODWARD: It was said very clearly, you will regret doing this.
BLITZER: Who sent that e-mail to you?
WOODWARD: Well, I’m not going to say.
And from Politico:
“Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”
Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’”

“Bob Woodward called a senior White House official last week to tell him that in a piece in that weekend’s Washington Post, he was going to question President Barack Obama’s account of how sequestration came about – and got a major-league brushback. The Obama aide “yelled at me for about a half-hour,” Woodward told us in an hourlong interview yesterday around the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.
Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. So, to get things straight: Our insinuation that Woodward is right about Obama is wrong. Woodward is a weenie, and the “dead-enders” are wasting their time reporting about Woodward, just as Woodward is wasting his time reporting about Obama.

kawasaki kid
February 28th, 2013
3:13 pm
Golly, we humans are so biased! We hear what we want to hear, and we believe what we want to believe, regardless of the trustworthiness of our sources. If Jay’s column today indeed contained the actual emails, and I must trust they were the actual emails (or JAY would lose his credibility as a beacon of justice and truth), there is simply no threat, implied or otherwise, to the gleaned from Sperling’s post to Woodward. Sperling might have chosen his words better, but it was plain that Sperling was simply pointing out to Woodward that Obama has always maintained strong support for a balance of new revenues along with new cuts in spending, and therefore, has not “moved the goal posts”. Sperling confidently advises his friend, “I think you will regret staking out this claim.” One can interpret this to mean that Sperling was trying to get Woodward to open his mind to the facts, or his credibility might suffer. “I think you will regret staking out this claim” could also be interpreted to be a veiled threat if you’re so predisposed. Remember, Sperling was following up with an emailed apology for raising his voice during a heated conversation with Woodward the previous day. One can determine from Woodward’s response that he still wasn’t conducive to changing his position, but he merely sloughed off Sperling’s apology as unnecessary. One would have to be hoplessly biased to interpret Sperling’s advice to Woodward as any sort of threat. Now, Woodward has obviously discovered he can profit from his little email debate with Sperling. What a shame!

DannyX- “Well, trying to make the Republican party look stupid is like shooting doves over a baited field.”
Republicans are used to it, and can recognize it as rhetoric. It takes a true Democrat to elevate rhetoric to the equivalent of committing an actual crime. (IE: Americans calling people names and taking embarrassing photographs is the same Iraqi’s breaking bones and chopping off body parts)
If your name has a (R) behind it, it’s the seriousness of the crime and not the evidence that matters.

Off topic, but a good read…
When the Republican Party was founded 159 years ago today by civil rights activists, it stood for the abolition of slavery and the liberation of millions of African-Americans. Today however, the party of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation is now the party of SB 1070 and “self-deportation.”
There is a radical, anti-immigrant faction within the Republican Party that does not want immigration reform to happen. This small but vocal group would rather see 11 million undocumented Americans arrested and deported than given a fair chance at earning full citizenship. Let’s make sure that our voices are louder than theirs. Send your message to Republican leaders in Congress and tell them to support immigration reform now.
The Republican Party was courageous in championing the last successful immigration reform in 1986 — they have the opportunity this year to show their commitment to solving this issue in a lasting way for millions of American families. Send a message to tell your Senators that their work will not be finished until they pass comprehensive immigration reform this year.
On this 159th anniversary of the Republican Party’s founding, let’s tell its leaders in Congress that if they are serious about turning over a new leaf and regaining Lincoln’s legacy, then they must do everything in their power to make comprehensive immigration reform a reality. Tell Republican leaders in Congress now to support an attainable pathway to full citizenship as part of immigration reform.
With hope,
Donna De La Cruz

Well, I think I see where the next poutrage will come from….
http://www.redstate.com/2013/02/28/gop-house-passes-unconstitutional-democrat-vawa-bill/
Earlier today, the Republican-controlled House passed the Senate version of the unconstitutional Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The Senate bill expands “coverage” to illegal aliens, men, homosexuals, transgendered individuals and prisoners. It also expands the law’s reach to give tribal Indian authorities jurisdiction over non-Indians accused of abusing Indian women.
The final bill passed with the support of 87 Republicans. Before voting on this bill, the House considered a substitute amendment that removed some of the new anomalies. It was defeated by a coalition of Democrats and 60 Republicans. It is important to note that about half of the GOP noes were opposing the bill precisely because it did not contain the new social engineering provisions. So even if all the conservatives had supported the House version, there were enough liberal Republicans to block it. Moreover, even had the GOP version passed the House, the conferees would have inserted the extra provisions in conference anyway.
It’s Club for Growth time, Georgia Conservatives…
http://www.primarymycongressman.com/
According to Red State…
We’d like to thank the following members who understood that the entire premise of the bill is flawed, superfluous, and an unconstitutional federal power grab. The only thing the federal government can do to protect women is to pass a universal right to carry bill. Everything else is just big government demagoguery. There is no reason a GOP-controlled House should have brought this bill before the body, much less the Senate passed version. If they are concerned about the political optics, they should have just ignored it and changed the subject to…let’s say gas and food prices. Now that is a novel idea. Giving the Democrats two full days to bludgeon you with gender warfare during debate time is evidently more politically prudent than repealing the ethanol mandate or some other useful legislation.
What is the purpose of a GOP-controlled House anyway?
The following 27 members voted no on both bills:

Wasn’t there one whackadoodle who thought native americans couldn’t be fair jurors for
“euro-american”…….?
What was his name…..?
“Grassley in his own words (ThinkProgess)
One provision that non-Native Americans can be tried in tribal court. And why is that a big thing? Because of the constitutionality of it, for two reasons. One, you know how the law is, that if you have a jury, the jury is supposed to be a reflection of society. [...] So you get non-Indians, let me say to make it easy, you get non-Indians going into a reservation and violating a woman. They need to be prosecuted. They aren’t prosecuted. So the idea behind [VAWA] is we’ll try them in tribal court. But under the laws of our land, you got to have a jury that is a reflection of society as a whole, and on an Indian reservation, it’s going to be made up of Indians, right? So the non-Indian doesn’t get a fair trial.

Bottom Line:
The President negotiated in bad faith. This is what Woodward said that has the White House and liberals in full damage control mode, including, but not limited to any conservative taking interest in the truths that Woodward is reporting.
I found there were two big things that jumped out of the book. One was the description of the White House and President Obama. Bob Woodward’s own words said “It seems no one is in charge”. Any reader will pick that up when you read it. It seems that policy was all over the map. Points were changing all the time. For example in the book after the President gets a deal with the Speaker he calls back and ups the stakes. That killed a deal.
This is a summary of The Price of Politics by Bob Woodward, written by Thomas M. Magee on the Amazon blog of the book on amazon.com. You can look it up.
So, what conclusions can we draw from the truths that Woodward gives?
That Obama is disconnected, unaffected, aloof and unconcerned about spending in the country, that he is inept, out of his element, incompetent or all three. There really can’t be any other conclusions if you consider Woodward’s truths.
Oh, I forgot. Woodward could be a “weenie.”
Yes, that would kill the whole story, wouldn’t it, Jay?

bro 309:
It’s a sad day when so much of our country is soooo friggin’ gullible that they will bite at any sh*t nugget tossed by the media because it “paints” Obama in a negative light. All the talk about the left and groupthink, but this media exercise shows how lockstep the right is in their thinking. If you can make a collective ass out of this many people at one time, it’s kinda scary how a truly charming person could “Pied Piper” the right into jumping off a cliff without a safety net or parachute.
We desperately need people who are capable of thinking for themselves instead of allowing others to think for them
This is the quintessential bit of modern nonsense–> “Our political opponents aren’t/can’t be thinking for themselves and are thus the intellectual equivalent of animals and therefore can not be trusted.” It’s the new non-falsifiable bit of modern liberal faith.
Forget that Obama lied about spending when he was running for office. Forget that Woodward points out the complete lack of leadership in Washington for budgetary issues. Forget that during Obama’s years of submitting budgets (but sometimes not even doing that!) that he has received a grand 2-term total of what–like 20–votes from either house of congress in favor of them.
Yeah, let’s forget all that and call our political opponents lemmings.
Hopefully, the igno-voters who get their news from John Stewart are finally going to see some criticism of the big “O” for the first time in his presidency (though certainly not from Stewart, no, no, heavens no) (nor from Jay Bookman) though other voices will rise to the truth–even though I’m sure the typical igno-voter/Democrat won’t like it all all.

In a campaign that appears to come from former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s playbook of “never allowing a crisis to go to waste,” President Obama’s “Organizing for America” is using the president’s dire warnings of the consequences of the sequester to raise money.
A new fundraising email asks for donations in the face of massive layoffs, a greater risk of terrorism and the loss of police, firefighters and food for seniors, women and families.
“On the chopping block are 10,000 teaching jobs, more than 70,000 kids’ spots in Head Start, $35 million for local fire departments, $43 million to make sure seniors don’t go hungry, and access to nutrition assistance for 600,000 women and their families. That’s just a few of the things we’ll lose,” the email says.
It ends with a pitch for money.

Nope, your false assumptions are the quintessential bit of modern nonsense. I have no political opponents. I don’t side with either party. I have no use for the Democratic Party, and I have no use for the current incarnation of the GOP.
My point in that post is that some conservatives come here and try to label liberals as sheep who all participate in “group think”. This particular story shows that the Conservative side of the spectrum does it just as bad, if not worse, than the Liberals. If that were not the case, you would not have tried and true Conservatives such as Erick Erickson walking back their support of this so called threat.
While thinking Conservatives are realizing they’ve been hoodwinked, others are still here attempting to justify and rationalize something that is not true.
You articulate the same diversionary tactic as most pissant ideologues do in that you deflect to rambling about Obama lying instead of actually confronting the lies being pushed by Conservatives. A real man will admit when they’re wrong instead of trying to continue to push the round peg into the square hole.

From the WSJ:
When Woodward called a White House aide — whom he only identifies as a “senior person,” but that BuzzFeed and others say is Gene Sperling, director of the White House Economic Council — to say he had written a piece for the weekend paper that would question President Obama’s version of how sequestration came about, the veteran journalist got an earful.
The aide “yelled at me for about a half-hour,” Woodward says.
This was before the ‘apology/admonishment’ email–sounds like this ‘aide’ just couldn’t let it go.

You have no concept of math at all, first of all. Conservatives control 1/2 the legislative power in Washington, whereas Obama controls zero. Democrats control the other half of legislative power, but the Constitution creates a divide where Obama has no power at all.
I don’t care what the topic is, Woodruff is losing support for his “threat” campaign from right wing ideologues. That was what MY post was about. I’d think that when hardcore Conservative supporters don’t buy his claim, then it’s likely bogus to begin with.
My idea of fair minded talk is for you, a conservative, to at least acknowledge that the right is packed with liars before going off on a tangent about left liars. That’s fair minded. However, you appear to be no different than most others here who attack first and attack often. If/When the topic becomes Obama lying, I’d ask the same of a liberal here.

It couldn’t touch the Marine boot camp I went through—this was in early 1960. First of all, there was no sitting around on footlockers talking to one another, and there was certainly no coaching of fellow recruits. You weren’t permitted to talk to anybody except to respond to a DI. The kindest thing you got called was s___-bird. There were actual physical beatings administered at night, when out of sight of any officers, a recruit reported to a DI to deal with daytime transgressions. A designated recruit—called the housemouse—was posted at the entrance to be on the lookout for any officers. Also at night came the “game”—the march around the barracks until the lights went out and once they came back on you had one minute to select a bunk and make it up. If anybody was slow, the game continued. Platoon punishment included holding an M-1 rifle out by the stacking swivel—just try holding 9.5 lbs. out by your fingers. As for any freedom of movement, the only thing I saw was the neck of the recruit marching in front of me. I could have gotten lost if I had been able to go just 200 yards from the barracks.
People who think that Full Metal Jacket was a realistic depiction of Marine boot camp were obviously sold a bill of goods.

Davis, former special counsel to President Bill Clinton, said that his Washington Times editor, John Solomon, “received a phone call from a senior Obama White House official who didn’t like some of my columns, even though I’m a supporter of Obama.”

It’s amazing how fast you can go from journalistic icon to crazy-old-bob just by writing a couple of unflattering articles about the ruling party.

Mr. Robert Woodward has found solid common sense with age and is finally doing a proper investigation which the lamestream, libtard media refuses to do. THIS is the president journalists like Mr. Woodward NEED to investigate. This installed “president” was never fully vetted for “his” actions including weakening our defense apparatus, shoving illegal health care down the once-free nation’s throats, raising taxe$ and regulations through the roof and instituting an anti-life agenda.
Mr. Woodward is officially forgiven for His actions against the honorable President Richard M. Nixon. When Mr. Woodward was a young, naive yippie Communist liberal, He took down a president who had this once-free nation on the Rightful path towards protecting our interests on this soil and overseas. No president has stared down Red China more than the honorable President Nixon. No president has fought Communism better than the honorable President Nixon. Years later, President Nixon is vindicated for all of His actions including His rightful investigation into Georgie McGovern’s socialistic attitude and Communist past. What happened? Well, Mr. Woodward was a radical, who along with fellow radical Carl Bernstein wrongfully made up a number of lies about President Nixon and ran Him out of town!
NOW, MR. WOODWARD IS SEEING THE LIGHT! WE LOVE YOU, BOB WOODWARD!
Amen,
Bill

How ironic that Bob Woodward did his lying on cable news, where journalistic integrity often comes in second to ratings. So where are the heroes of old, like, you know, ah, um, Bob Woodward? Looks like one of them might be you, Jay, at least you’ve got my vote!
