When did Bob Woodward become such a weenie?

8a406643d7fe3d16180f6a706700fc95

Last night on CNN, Bob Woodward made national news when he complained that he had been threatened in an email exchange with an unnamed top White House official. According to the Watergate legend, the “very senior” official warned him that if he reported news about the sequestration in a way the White House did not like, “you will regret doing this.”

Put that way, it certainly sounds ominous. And just to drive the point home, Woodward repeated the claim in an interview with Politico:

“Woodward repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’”

“They have to be willing to live in the world where they’re challenged,” Woodward continued in his calm, instantly recognizable voice. “I’ve tangled with lots of these people. But suppose there’s a young reporter who’s only had a couple of years — or 10 years’ — experience and the White House is sending him an email saying, ‘You’re going to regret this.’ You know, tremble, tremble. I don’t think it’s the way to operate.”

Again, that does sound potentially serious, particularly since this “threat” struck home with someone as experienced and presumably tough as Woodward.

As it turns out, however, the very senior official in question was Gene Sperling, who as head of the National Economic Council is not exactly in a position to order drones rained upon Woodward’s increasingly big head.

The e-mail exchange between Woodward and Sperling has also been released. Here is what Sperling wrote:

“I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. My bad. I do understand your problems with a couple of our statements in the fall — but feel on the other hand that you focus on a few specific trees that gives a very wrong perception of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here.

But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim. The idea that the sequester was to force both sides to go back to try at a big or grand bargain with a mix of entitlements and revenues (even if there were serious disagreements on composition) was part of the DNA of the thing from the start. It was an accepted part of the understanding — from the start. Really.”

And here’s how Woodward responded after this supposed “threat”:

“Gene: You do not ever have to apologize to me. You get wound up because you are making your points and you believe them. This is all part of a serious discussion. I for one welcome a little heat; there should more given the importance. I also welcome your personal advice. I am listening. I know you lived all this. My partial advantage is that I talked extensively with all involved. I am traveling and will try to reach you after 3 pm today. Best, Bob

I’ve been in more than my share of those conversations, with everybody from county commissioners to U.S. senators. It’s ridiculous for Woodward to claim that he felt threatened or intimidated by it. In the first place, the context makes it clear that Sperling was warning Woodward that if he reported things that way, he would regret it because it would be factually incorrect. There was no other implication, and Woodward’s response makes no mention that he felt threatened in any way.

Even if you try real real real hard to imagine Sperling’s email as some threat, it in no way justifies Woodward’s collapse upon his fainting couch.

When Woodward and Carl Bernstein were breaking the Watergate story 40 years ago, Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, famously warned Bernstein that Washington Post owner “Katie Graham … is gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that’s published.”

THAT was a threat.

Indeed, Nixon plotted how to revoke federal licenses for TV stations owned by the Post as a way to get back at the newspaper.

“They should give some thought to taking on the guy that went into Cambodia and Laos, ran the Cambodian bombing campaign,” an angry Nixon was taped as telling an aide in the White House. “What do the hell they think they’re doing in there?” Later he abandoned that approach, telling the same aide that “We’re going to screw them another way.… They don’t really realize how rough I can play.… But when I start, I will kill them. There’s no question about it.”

Sad to say, Woodward’s grotesque exaggeration of his exchange with Sperling diminishes both his standing and credibility.

DannyX- “Well, trying to make the Republican party look stupid is like shooting doves over a baited field.”

Republicans are used to it, and can recognize it as rhetoric. It takes a true Democrat to elevate rhetoric to the equivalent of committing an actual crime. (IE: Americans calling people names and taking embarrassing photographs is the same Iraqi’s breaking bones and chopping off body parts)

If your name has a (R) behind it, it’s the seriousness of the crime and not the evidence that matters.

Off topic, but a good read…

When the Republican Party was founded 159 years ago today by civil rights activists, it stood for the abolition of slavery and the liberation of millions of African-Americans. Today however, the party of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation is now the party of SB 1070 and “self-deportation.”

There is a radical, anti-immigrant faction within the Republican Party that does not want immigration reform to happen. This small but vocal group would rather see 11 million undocumented Americans arrested and deported than given a fair chance at earning full citizenship. Let’s make sure that our voices are louder than theirs. Send your message to Republican leaders in Congress and tell them to support immigration reform now.

The Republican Party was courageous in championing the last successful immigration reform in 1986 — they have the opportunity this year to show their commitment to solving this issue in a lasting way for millions of American families. Send a message to tell your Senators that their work will not be finished until they pass comprehensive immigration reform this year.

On this 159th anniversary of the Republican Party’s founding, let’s tell its leaders in Congress that if they are serious about turning over a new leaf and regaining Lincoln’s legacy, then they must do everything in their power to make comprehensive immigration reform a reality. Tell Republican leaders in Congress now to support an attainable pathway to full citizenship as part of immigration reform.

With hope,

Well, I think I see where the next poutrage will come from….

http://www.redstate.com/2013/02/28/gop-house-passes-unconstitutional-democrat-vawa-bill/

Earlier today, the Republican-controlled House passed the Senate version of the unconstitutional Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The Senate bill expands “coverage” to illegal aliens, men, homosexuals, transgendered individuals and prisoners. It also expands the law’s reach to give tribal Indian authorities jurisdiction over non-Indians accused of abusing Indian women.

The final bill passed with the support of 87 Republicans. Before voting on this bill, the House considered a substitute amendment that removed some of the new anomalies. It was defeated by a coalition of Democrats and 60 Republicans. It is important to note that about half of the GOP noes were opposing the bill precisely because it did not contain the new social engineering provisions. So even if all the conservatives had supported the House version, there were enough liberal Republicans to block it. Moreover, even had the GOP version passed the House, the conferees would have inserted the extra provisions in conference anyway.

It’s Club for Growth time, Georgia Conservatives…

http://www.primarymycongressman.com/

According to Red State…

We’d like to thank the following members who understood that the entire premise of the bill is flawed, superfluous, and an unconstitutional federal power grab. The only thing the federal government can do to protect women is to pass a universal right to carry bill. Everything else is just big government demagoguery. There is no reason a GOP-controlled House should have brought this bill before the body, much less the Senate passed version. If they are concerned about the political optics, they should have just ignored it and changed the subject to…let’s say gas and food prices. Now that is a novel idea. Giving the Democrats two full days to bludgeon you with gender warfare during debate time is evidently more politically prudent than repealing the ethanol mandate or some other useful legislation.

What is the purpose of a GOP-controlled House anyway?

The following 27 members voted no on both bills:

Wasn’t there one whackadoodle who thought native americans couldn’t be fair jurors for
“euro-american”…….?

What was his name…..?

“Grassley in his own words (ThinkProgess)

One provision that non-Native Americans can be tried in tribal court. And why is that a big thing? Because of the constitutionality of it, for two reasons. One, you know how the law is, that if you have a jury, the jury is supposed to be a reflection of society. [...] So you get non-Indians, let me say to make it easy, you get non-Indians going into a reservation and violating a woman. They need to be prosecuted. They aren’t prosecuted. So the idea behind [VAWA] is we’ll try them in tribal court. But under the laws of our land, you got to have a jury that is a reflection of society as a whole, and on an Indian reservation, it’s going to be made up of Indians, right? So the non-Indian doesn’t get a fair trial.

Bottom Line:

The President negotiated in bad faith. This is what Woodward said that has the White House and liberals in full damage control mode, including, but not limited to any conservative taking interest in the truths that Woodward is reporting.

I found there were two big things that jumped out of the book. One was the description of the White House and President Obama. Bob Woodward’s own words said “It seems no one is in charge”. Any reader will pick that up when you read it. It seems that policy was all over the map. Points were changing all the time. For example in the book after the President gets a deal with the Speaker he calls back and ups the stakes. That killed a deal.

This is a summary of The Price of Politics by Bob Woodward, written by Thomas M. Magee on the Amazon blog of the book on amazon.com. You can look it up.

So, what conclusions can we draw from the truths that Woodward gives?

That Obama is disconnected, unaffected, aloof and unconcerned about spending in the country, that he is inept, out of his element, incompetent or all three. There really can’t be any other conclusions if you consider Woodward’s truths.

Oh, I forgot. Woodward could be a “weenie.”

Yes, that would kill the whole story, wouldn’t it, Jay?

bro 309:

It’s a sad day when so much of our country is soooo friggin’ gullible that they will bite at any sh*t nugget tossed by the media because it “paints” Obama in a negative light. All the talk about the left and groupthink, but this media exercise shows how lockstep the right is in their thinking. If you can make a collective ass out of this many people at one time, it’s kinda scary how a truly charming person could “Pied Piper” the right into jumping off a cliff without a safety net or parachute.

We desperately need people who are capable of thinking for themselves instead of allowing others to think for them

This is the quintessential bit of modern nonsense–> “Our political opponents aren’t/can’t be thinking for themselves and are thus the intellectual equivalent of animals and therefore can not be trusted.” It’s the new non-falsifiable bit of modern liberal faith.

Forget that Obama lied about spending when he was running for office. Forget that Woodward points out the complete lack of leadership in Washington for budgetary issues. Forget that during Obama’s years of submitting budgets (but sometimes not even doing that!) that he has received a grand 2-term total of what–like 20–votes from either house of congress in favor of them.

Yeah, let’s forget all that and call our political opponents lemmings.

Hopefully, the igno-voters who get their news from John Stewart are finally going to see some criticism of the big “O” for the first time in his presidency (though certainly not from Stewart, no, no, heavens no) (nor from Jay Bookman) though other voices will rise to the truth–even though I’m sure the typical igno-voter/Democrat won’t like it all all.

In a campaign that appears to come from former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s playbook of “never allowing a crisis to go to waste,” President Obama’s “Organizing for America” is using the president’s dire warnings of the consequences of the sequester to raise money.

A new fundraising email asks for donations in the face of massive layoffs, a greater risk of terrorism and the loss of police, firefighters and food for seniors, women and families.

“On the chopping block are 10,000 teaching jobs, more than 70,000 kids’ spots in Head Start, $35 million for local fire departments, $43 million to make sure seniors don’t go hungry, and access to nutrition assistance for 600,000 women and their families. That’s just a few of the things we’ll lose,” the email says.

It ends with a pitch for money.

“Let’s finish what we started. Chip in $25 or more to Organizing for Action, the grassroots movement that will get the job done.”

How many of you got the email? Can you say, shameless?

Hopefully, the igno-voters who get their news from John Stewart are finally going to see some criticism of the big “O” for the first time in his presidency –

Is that anything like actual Senators sending demands to the White House for things reported in the Onion or similar sources or “Friends of Hamas” questioning. My bet is that watchers of Jon Stewart are better informed and can tell that its comedy not news reporting but apparently actually idiot GOP staffers and senators can’t.

This is the quintessential bit of modern nonsense–> “Our political opponents aren’t/can’t be thinking for themselves and are thus the intellectual equivalent of animals and therefore can not be trusted.” It’s the new non-falsifiable bit of modern liberal faith.

Nope, your false assumptions are the quintessential bit of modern nonsense. I have no political opponents. I don’t side with either party. I have no use for the Democratic Party, and I have no use for the current incarnation of the GOP.

My point in that post is that some conservatives come here and try to label liberals as sheep who all participate in “group think”. This particular story shows that the Conservative side of the spectrum does it just as bad, if not worse, than the Liberals. If that were not the case, you would not have tried and true Conservatives such as Erick Erickson walking back their support of this so called threat.

While thinking Conservatives are realizing they’ve been hoodwinked, others are still here attempting to justify and rationalize something that is not true.

You articulate the same diversionary tactic as most pissant ideologues do in that you deflect to rambling about Obama lying instead of actually confronting the lies being pushed by Conservatives. A real man will admit when they’re wrong instead of trying to continue to push the round peg into the square hole.

From the WSJ:

When Woodward called a White House aide — whom he only identifies as a “senior person,” but that BuzzFeed and others say is Gene Sperling, director of the White House Economic Council — to say he had written a piece for the weekend paper that would question President Obama’s version of how sequestration came about, the veteran journalist got an earful.

The aide “yelled at me for about a half-hour,” Woodward says.

This was before the ‘apology/admonishment’ email–sounds like this ‘aide’ just couldn’t let it go.

Confronting the lies pushed by conservatives? Like what?–which conservatives? Woodward???

Hah! What lies? That Obama signed the sequester into law? Just rambling huh??? I suppose that’s what you hear when you listen to something you can’t face.

Talk about real men admitting the truth! Yes, you show us how rare they are.

Just to recap, Bro. Woodward is being attacked on this here blog. The diversionary tactic is calling him, a, hmmm. let me see here….it’s around here somewhere… Oh, I’ve got it…. Wait…..uh, got to take a …..OK, honey…hmmm … where is it….. ah yes! …. here it is…… a WEENIE.

This blog was begun by a real man then? Just asking.

Obama’s the PREZ, bro. The big cahuna; top dog! Big cheese! “head Honcho.” “leader of the.”…., all that stuff.

If we’re supposed to talk about conservative lies to not be pissant ideologues, then let me know what your definition of fair-minded talk is please. Since “conservatives” are pushing lies via 1/3 of the legislative power in Washington right now, kindly let me know how Obama, who leads the other 2/3 and his lies are far less relevant.

Sounds like you’re a hell of a lot more ideologuishly priggish than I am.

And until you admit that, I’d like you to remit your man card to a good friend for safekeeping.
