“Ben, the two of us need look no more …”

rat.though.transferx299

Using brain implants, researchers at Duke University have allowed lab rats to communicate with each other, brain to brain, in a crude form of mental telepathy. In fact, researchers say, the two rats quickly began to collaborate, with one rat using its “brain-to-brain interface” to assist the second one in figuring out how to complete a task that would bring both of them a reward.*

In a sense, the two rats became a single biological entity. As researchers concluded, lab results “are a clear indicator that a fundamentally more complex system emerged from the operation of the BTBI; one which required considerable adaptation from the participant animals so that they could jointly perform the sensorimotor tasks.”

At one point, and just to show off, the experiment was conducted with one rat located in Brazil and a second in North Carolina, giving new meaning to Internet connectivity.

I will now give you a paragraph taken from the scientific paper reporting these discoveries, followed by a general translation:

“… we have already proposed that, in theory, channel accuracy can be increased if instead of a dyad a whole grid of multiple reciprocally interconnected brains are employed. Such a computing structure could define the first example of an organic computer capable of solving heuristic problems that would be deemed non-computable by a general Turing-machine.”

Translation: If we electronically connect not just two rat brains, but whole swarms of rat brains, one to the other, theoretically the rat swarm will become much much smarter than any individual rat, perhaps capable of solving problems that even powerful supercomputers can’t solve.

I just thought you would want to know, just in case.

* (Back in the ’90s, when I wrote a weekly science column called “Next” for the AJC, I covered the early work in this field.)

“The agnostic Jew…”

You might want to take a good look at that one and see just what it brings into question here…since it’s said in derogatory tone and agnostic refers to religion, then the use of Jew to be a religious determination cannot be, so you must think there’s something equally negative (iyo) about being a Jew…think about it…

“Does a socialist (in the sense you mean it, as synonymous with Marxist) see to it that banks get literally everything they want?”

Socialism is not synonymous with Marxism. They are often related in various thinkers, but not one and the same by any means. To the extent our economy is directed more and more by the federal (central) government, to that extent it becomes increasingly socialistic is tenor. I believe Obama’s desire is to dramatically increase the scope and size of the federal government, so I think he is after a kind of so-called “state socialism”.

Gay marriage isn’t tonight’s topic but why should homosexuals marry? Civil unions that I have no problem with should suffice. Homosexuals can’t pro-create so marriage isn’t necessary and as a Christian believer I don’t accept the act of homosexuality as acceptable sexual behavior in the eyes of the Lord. Keep it private and no one cares what goes on, make it public as many in the homosexual community wishes along with their enablers and it crosses a line, which won’t be going away anytime soon in this country.

You may recall that a few months ago I opined that the American secular Jew is not really a Jew, which sent our beloved JV into a frenzy. So I was using the phrase “agnostic Jew” sarcastically (it is to me an oxymoron) – meaning he is the LAST person that should be speaking about another’s perceived religious hypocrisy.

“By calling attention to ‘a well regulated militia,’ the ’security’ of the nation, and the right of each citizen ‘to keep and bear arms,’ our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. Scout: while I haven’t advocating for any weapons bans, why did you not post this letter. Let me guess, your fav website didn’t tell you or email you with it?

________________________________________

May 3, 1994
To Members of the U.S. House of Representatives:

We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. Although assualt weapons account for less than 1% of the guns in circulation, they account for nearly 10% of the guns traced to crime.

Every major law enforcement organization in America and dozens of leading labor, medical, religious, civil rights and civic groups support such a ban. Most importantly, poll after poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly support a ban on assault weapons. A 1993 CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 77% of Americans support a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of semi-automatic assault guns, such as the AK-47.

The 1989 import ban resulted in an impressive 40% drop in imported assault weapons traced to crime between 1989 and 1991, but the killing continues. Last year, a killer armed with two TEC9s killed eight people at a San Francisco law firm and wounded several others. During the past five years, more than 40 law enforcement officers have been killed or wounded in the line of duty by an assault weapon.

While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons.

Sincerely,

Gerald R. Ford

http://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/11/us/letter-of-resignation-sent-by-bush-to-rifle-association.html

I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on good people.

Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country — and serve it well he did.

In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.

John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.’s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.

Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government’s “go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens.” (Your words)

I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.’s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.

However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.

You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list.

Sincerely, [ signed ] George Bush

Towncrier: You said to “call” Obama or someone in the Senate. I have little evidence that works. The best way to contact those representing me is via e-mail… Since they are all Republicans at this point (and have already asked for something in writing from Obama), you are asking me to “call” Democratic leaders for whom I did not vote or who do not represent my district or state. That suggestion strikes me as naive and unrealistic. Got it now?

Nope. It seems as though you don’t “got it now”, so let me guide you along to where you can understand it.

You come here on a Left-leaning blog and demand or ask for a written plan from Obama and Senate Democrats knowing good and damn well that that’s about as useful as wearing a soccer helmet while playing for the World Cup.

In the grand scheme of things when it comes to making a demand from Obama and Senate leaders, you are a nobody, a nothing. You are not worthy of them responding to. Therefore, you come here on this blog to ask such things because you don’t have the testicular fortitude to ask the people who you need to ask because you already know you won’t get diddly squat.

Wanna talk about naive, I am far from naive. I know exactly how the DC game is played. If you don’t think your Republican representatives are going to get a written plan, what makes you think you are above them when, as you even acknowledge, you didn’t or can’t vote for any of them.

Why don’t you stick to playing your little childish games with TBS and others. You pretend to be all this and that, when deep inside you already know your place in society. Talk about naive…

Over 300 million weapons in the hands of citizens. You would think if that was indeed a problem our population would be approaching extinction.

Extinction? All this gun paranoia is ridiculous, it’s too late the genie is out of the bottle; proceed with caution…

I understand! Now that you have your second daughter safely delivered, here’s a story you might find amusing:

A young mother gave birth to her 2nd child, and she worried that her first child would feel neglected and become jealous. So she hired a Nanny to come in for 3 weeks to care for the baby so the Mother could spend more time with her elder daughter.

Everything went beautifully. The older child loved the baby, was careful when allowed to hold her and showed no signs at all of feeling neglected or jealous. So when the Nanny’s contracted time was up, she packed up and left.

As she walked down the sidewalk the older girl ran to the door, wrenched it open, ran out on the porch and yelled: “Mary! You forgot your baby!”

Ban future sales of mags that hold more than 15 rounds. Stop talking about assailt weapons. Point is how many rounds can be fired withut reloadin I vote to limit that to 15 no matter what type of gun it is.

I watch the news and shake my head at all the violence with guns and feel far removed from it but every now and then while I’m driving I wonder if there’s a stray bullet with my name on it…but I don’t spend too much time pondering that scenerio. Guns are as american as apple pie…

heck, sitting at home can be dangerous. I came home one day years ago, to my trailer in Macon and there was a bullet hole in the one of the windows.

Again, I have not, nor will advocate for the banning of any weapons.

I was merely pointing out to you that the quote game can be played by all. Quoting a Dem President when I can quote a Republican saying the opposite or vice versa means exactly what?

We can both google?

Towncrier: “To the extent our economy is directed more and more by the federal (central) government, to that extent it becomes increasingly socialistic is tenor ”

That’s a, if you’ll pardon the broad brush, particularly American misconception, as I’m sure you are defining socialist in strict opposition to capitalist. But the degree to which a country is actually socialist in the classic sense is not determined by the extent to which it has a government-directed economy, but the actual collective participation in that direction by the society itself.

Would you call China “socialist”? Obviously it is in name. But it’s also by any definition hyper-capitalist, too. So centralism and control really do not make a society socialist, but as China is showing can in fact go hand in hand with the most explosive form of capitalism.
