To the boys who put the funk in Motown

A good friend of mine recommended this cut to me for Friday Travelin’ Music. It features Joan Osborne performing an old Motown hit with the Funk Brothers, the legendary group of session players who played background for almost all of the hits from Motown’s golden era, from 1959 until the label left Detroit for the glitter of Los Angeles in 1972.

The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder — the brothers funked it up for all of them. Ms. Osborne has the pipes to live up to that heritage in this cut.

Some great stuff coming in already…Unmentionable claims that Motown and Stax did more for race relations at a crucial time than all the rest of what went on combined. I think I’d agree…

Can we get some ‘urban’ traveling music one day?

Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King?

T.I. or Drake would suffice too. Spread the love.

Just now got around to listening to TBS’s Womack and Isley piece.

Awesome. On a scale of one to ten, I give that one a 12.

Womack played with both Rundgren and the Isleys, who covered Todd’s Hello, It’s Me.

The circle goes round and round…

Ron Wood and Bill Wyman were part of Womack’s studio band when he recorded the album that song was on. I think Keith Richards may have sat in as well.

Diamond in the Back…ah, the memories…riding about Jackson with Miz Johnny Paul Pickett who’d borrowed his cuzzin’s one and listening to it on the eight track…doobie passing around and looking at the folks looking at us! :-)

Who’d've ever thought JP would “grow up” to be a big time corporate attorney in New Yawk…and still, after all these years, comes back home from time to time and, well, is still true to his roots as a screamin’ queen up for a night on the town and cruising around…
