“Start asking security experts which powerful Washington institutions have been penetrated by Chinese cyberspies, and this is the usual answer: almost all of them.
The list of those hacked in recent years includes law firms, think tanks, news organizations, human rights groups, contractors, congressional offices, embassies and federal agencies.
The information compromised by such intrusions, security experts say, would be enough to map how power is exercised in Washington to a remarkably nuanced degree. The only question, they say, is whether the Chinese have the analytical resources to sort through the massive troves of data they steal every day….
“They’re trying to make connections between prominent people who work at think tanks, prominent donors that they’ve heard of and how the government makes decisions,” said Dan Blumenthal, director of Asian studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which also has been hacked. “It’s a sophisticated intelligence-gathering effort at trying to make human-network linkages of people in power, whether they be in Congress or the executive branch.”
According to experts, the Chinese hack everybody. They hack major corporations and steal trade secrets — attacks against Google, Apple, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have been publicized in recent years. They hack lowly individual dissidents. They hack, or attempt to hack, major agencies in the U.S. government, including the Pentagon, CIA and White House and most certainly the Department of Commerce. Given the byzantine ways of the Chinese government, they almost certainly hack each other as well.
The natural response to such a discovery is outrage, and to some degree that outrage is justified. It is, at some level, a violation of our national sovereignty. But it gets complicated because China is hardly alone. A lot of other countries are aggressive about hacking into overseas computer networks, including the Israelis, the French and the Russians.
Oh, and the Americans too. It would be naive in the extreme to believe that the U.S. government isn’t running cyber-spying operations of its own. Those operations probably don’t extend to efforts to steal commercial secrets of foreign companies so that data can then be handed to U.S. companies, which the Chinese and other governments do. But on issues of national security, we are no doubt just as invasive as anybody else.
In other words, while everybody is a victim in this thing, everybody is also a villain. Nobody’s clean.
It’s also important to distinguish between cyberspying and cyberwarfare. If you can penetrate a highly sensitive computer network and steal data, you may also be able to do great damage to that network at a time of your choosing.
As President Obama put it in his State of the Union address:
“We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, our air-traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy.”
And again, it would be naive to believe that the U.S. government is not building similar capacity to bring down important computer networks in other countries, just in case it’s needed. In this game, like any other, you need to be able to play offense as well as defense.
To handle such duties, in 2010 the Defense Department created the U.S. CyberCommand, which is now slated for a major expansion. Eighty percent of the thousands of new personnel to be devoted to the effort will be military; 20 percent will be civilian experts. In fact, some of that expanded operation may be headquartered right here in Georgia, at Fort Gordon outside Augusta. That would be a big economic boost to the state, given the potential high-tech spinoffs from such an operation.
In other words, what we’re witnessing is a quiet, high-stakes state of virtual warfare that will be permanent and escalating.

It’s the same issue we’ve had since forever. When we lived on open plains the issue was protection from predators and enemies. So we moved to caves, but we still had the issue of that open cave entrance. So we built houses. Then we invented locking doors. Then we built stone buildings. You get the idea. It’s STILL all about keeping out enemies and predators.

Cyber stalking is how we’ve (US) started to monitor segments of AlQ.
I’m very cynical about China taking US Companies trade secrets.
On the one hand, I am amused — Take THAT punk azz Fortune 500!! You shipped all those jobs overseas to China and now you’re finally getting your reward.
On the other hand, I’m horrified — Will those punk azz US companies expect the US to wage war on China in their behalf?
Then again, I’m waiting with bated breath — I wonder how good the Koch Brothers will look in a Kimona walking 10 paces behind some short studly Chineese male who has just made the Koch’s their beeeyooootches.

IMO insurance is the best Ponzi scheme ever invented. You pay into it for years, use it maybe once or twice – you may get a minimal pay out; they raise your premiums, (sometimes); and then when you’re older, they try to cut you off.

Insurance is not a ponzi scheme in that it doesn’t promise a payoff. You pay premiums for a period of coverage. If something happens you receive payment. If nothing happens no payment….but what you paid for was the potential repayment in the event of a loss.
Now if you’re social security to a ponzi scheme then you’re on to something.

I have a funny story about that! When my dad was stationed in Korea (and dragged the family along with him); we used to buy all this electronic equipment off the economy. We had EVERYTHING! And my dad had this big ole reel to reel recording thingie; anyway when we PCS’d back to the states, (to Ft. McClellan in Bama); we lived on the economy and I had a lot of “non military brats” friends.
Anyway, my mother invited a bunch of my friend’s mothers over for a get to know you brunch, and they were all impressed with all of our electronic junk that we had in the home. When i went to school the next day, everyone was calling me “the rich kid”. they didn’t know we bought that stuff for pennies on the dollar they thought my folks had paid full price.
Anyway, someone breaks into our house, steals our stuff, and my dad puts in a claim — gets back about 45% more than what he originally paid for the stuff.
When I was older, I asked my folks did they think that one of my friends’ mothers’ had set us up for the break in, (I always thought thats what happened, but I was never sure and i’d always felt really bad about it). My dad was like, “Yep. That’s why I always prompted your mom to have your friends over. I knew someone would hit the house and I knew I’d clean up on the insurance claim!”
He told me that’s how he could afford a new car every 2 to 3 years….

Insurance is not a ponzi scheme in that it doesn’t promise a payoff
Umm I’m gonna kinda disagree almost………
You are promised a payout when something happens to you while you’re insured with said company. You’re NOT promised a weekly/monthly check; but you ARE promised payment.
Check out some of their commercials on t.v. (I like those “I’m Mayhem” commercials); they all slyly suggest that they will help you financially if something happens.

Funny about how things come around to bite you on the arse. In Apr, 2011, Bozo, in full campaign to look more presidential and imply that he was cutting spending, stated that he would veto any attempt to interfere with the sequestration involving cuts in defense and social programs.
And just this week, surrounded by a bunch of first responders, he goes 180 and states if we do pass the proposed sequestration, we will be laying off hundreds of teachers, those first responders standing behind him and provide cuts in military spending that we cannot afford to do. Which is it, Bozo?

Lots of factors at work here. One may be simply to try to understand us. But to what end that understanding will be put is open to question.
Another is their obsession with information, any information, all information. It’s a hallmark of a paranoid leadership within autocratic governments. China’s interesting – trying to loosen economic freedom, which leads to a loss of control, which leads to greater efforts to monitor and control. Just because it’s widespread and covers many facets does not mean it’s indiscriminate.
But the real question is, to what end is that knowledge used? There was this Chinese guy born a couple thousand years ago. Chinese revere him. Nearly every modern military person in a responsible position is at least marginally familiar with his works. Graduate courses in business study him. Sun Tzu. Wrote “The Art of War.” It’s pretty short, but one can spend weeks studying and applying a few sentences. Chapter 13, “The Use of Spies’ states:
“…Hostile armies may face each other for years, striving for the victory which is decided in a single day. This being so, to remain in ignorance of the enemy’s condition simply because one grudges the outlay of a hundred ounces of silver in honors and emoluments, is the height of inhumanity…what enables the wise sovereign and the good general to strike and conquer, and achieve things beyond the reach of ordinary men, is FOREKNOWLEDGE. Now this foreknowledge cannot be elicited from spirits; it cannot be obtained inductively from experience, nor by any deductive calculation. Knowledge of the enemy’s dispositions can only be obtained from other men…Without subtle ingenuity of mind, one cannot make certain of the truth of their reports. Be subtle! be subtle! and use your spies for every kind of business…The end and aim of spying in all its five varieties is knowledge of the enemy…”

If you want to think about something scary then look no further at how the Democratic party (example purpose only not attempting to slur because both parties will do this by 2016) used data mining and person specific marketing to get maximize voter turnout last year. The party was able to gather enough individual data on people to determine if the person was a potential voter and then gathered enough information of the person to be able to specifically market (brainwash) that person to think they were on the exact same mindset as Obama.

kayaker 71, that pretty much parallels what Sinkwich said yesterday about corporations when I asked him if he was fine that corporations that make billions, in fact get taxpayer subsidies (Facebooks’s on par with Solyndra) pay zero federal income tax. He said it didn’t bother him a bit, repeated what you said about not paying more than legally required, etc.
But I asked Sinkwich a followup, which he ducked. I’m hoping you’ll address it.
Given your response, are you also ‘fine’ that 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax? Because they shouldn’t pay more than is legally required? Because Congress made the laws and these people are obeying them? You’re fine if a corporation with profits of over a billion a year pays no tax and gets taxpayer assistance, you feel the same when it’s a single mom earning $25,000 a year, right?

For some reason, no one knows why, it takes a company 20 seconds to take money from you that they feel you owe them, (via having your banking information); but if they’re wrong OR if they owe YOU money, it takes them 2 weeks to put the money back in your account.

What’s that got to do with NRA yahoos conceivably being bad shots and accidentally plugging innocent bystanders?
Your ignorant posting of that quote might have some currency if I’d ever argued for depriving an entire nation of their firearms, which I haven’t and wouldn’t do. It’s pretty clear to me that you’re completely ignorant of my position on the issue.
Of course, that’s par for the course on your side. Just make spit up and attribute it to your opponents. Maybe some of it will stick.

Illinois state senator pushes anti-anonymity bill
“A recently introduced bill in the Illinois state Senate would require anonymous website comment posters to reveal their identities if they want to keep their comments online.
The bill, called the Internet Posting Removal Act, is sponsored by Illinois state Sen. Ira Silverstein. It states that a “web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless the anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate.”
The bill, which does not ask for or clarify requirements from entities requesting the comment removal, would take effect 90 days after becoming law.

Anniston City Manager Don Hoyt plans to hire a new city attorney, an action he said is part of a movement for “change from the top” at City Hall.
Last week, Hoyt announced his intention to retire by the beginning of September, a recognition, he said, of the public’s cry for change during last fall’s elections.
“I felt like the folks out there wanted change from the top,” he said. “That included me and the city attorney.”
As part of this change, Hoyt notified the City Council on Feb. 11 of his decision to end the city’s relationship with Cleo Thomas, who had served as city attorney since 2009. The city put out requests for qualifications from prospective attorneys on Feb. 14. Hoyt added that Thomas was not an employee of the city and therefore was not fired. Instead, he billed the city for services rendered.
Attempts to reach Thomas on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Thomas, a longtime Anniston resident and Harvard Law School graduate, is a former member of the University of Alabama board of trustees, and in 1976 became that school’s first black president of the Student Government Association. He also was the first black member of the Anniston Country Club, joining in 1993.

Some of these Republicans remind me of an episode from high school. About 300 students in the class, had an election for homecoming queen, one of the girl’s moms who wasn’t elected went to the principal and carried on about how her daughter was so pretty, so popular, so smart, there was NO WAY she wasn’t elected. The voting was rigged. There was a conspiracy. On and on. Finally the principal went to the safe (yep, it was a big deal), pulled out the ballots – and mom found her darling daughter that everyone really, really loved… got a dozen votes.
And that’s what I think of when I think of today’s complaining Republicans.

Had to step out for a minute! Back now –
Fred: DDR: What’s to be on the fence about? How can you FORCE a woman (or girl) tohave an abortion?
I’m on the fence because:
YES its true that she can’t /shouldn’t be forced to abort however she IS a teenager and the full load of the child she brings into the world, if she decides to keep it, will be on the parents, NOT her.
YES she has the right to have her baby. Freedom of Choice is not just the right to have an abortion but also the right NOT to have an abortion.
NO she’s a minor — she’s not legally able to enter into a contract and in some states, her parents are liable for all her mistakes, (eg: if she breaks the neighbors window her parents would have to pay). Looking at it from that perspective I can see why her parents didn’t want the added burden of a baby.
Babies are expensive. If the family is already under financial strain, the last thing they’d want is an additional strain of providing for another mouth to feed.
NO if she’s “grown enough” to sue her parents, then she should be “grown enough” to take care of that child on her own. WHY should the parents have to pay for her mistakes? She could’ve went to court to become an EMANCIPATED minor, instead she chose to bring up this “They want me to abort” defense. Its as if this whole thing is contrived and she set up her parents to be on the hook for her mistake for years to come.
NO a car and a cell phone is NOT A RIGHT; its a privileged. So what if her parents took them from her? That’s what parents do when they punish you for your bad behavior. And, let’s not get it twisted, what she did was part of irresponsible, and BAD behavior. This is 2013 — even if she knows nothing of / or had no way of getting conventional means of birth control; condoms come 3/pack at every local Quik Trip.
YES I know that once the baby comes, (or rather i HOPE that once the baby comes), the parents minds will change and their “advocating”, (not forcing), for an abortion will be a moot point; however I feel that the daughter intentionally put them in the role of the “bad guy” just to get her way.
I’m trying to get the transcripts of the case soon as it comes out, (It’ll be in FindLaw); then I can be a better judge of each participants’ demeanor and statements; so for now….
………….I’m still on the fence!!

Insofar as China holds a lot of our debt *now* and wouldn’t if they sold the cash flows, it’d make a lot of difference to us. Perhaps not economically, but I feel pretty strongly that China is actually *moderating* its words and behavior in order to continue benefiting from our indebtedness.

Sequestor….the GOP has handled much of this poorly, but to many people it appears that the president appears desparate (sp?). The GOP should continue to use these economic issues to keep deficeit reduction thru less spending in the minds of the 2014 voter. Did someone try to mention deficit?
Which brings us to the economic level. The deficits that Bush ran up in the years in which the country was teetering on the verge of a serious recession had the beneficial effect of righting the economy. In that sense, deficits not only didn’t matter, but were a force for economic good.

http://www.nationalmemo.com/amid-tightening-senate-polls-georgia-republicans-seek-repeal-of-17th-amendment/#.USZOKQS0ugY.twitter
In the latest example of the GOP’s selective reverence for the Constitution, six Georgia Republicans are trying to end the election of U.S. senators by popular vote — just as a new poll shows that the GOP’s footing in the state’s upcoming Senate election is less secure than previously thought.
The Douglas County Sentinel reports that state representatives Dustin Hightower, Mike Dudgeon, Buzz Brockway, Josh Clark, Kevin Cooke, and Delvis Dutton — all Republicans — have introduced a resolution to repeal the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The 17th Amendment, which was adopted in 1913, mandated that senators be elected by popular vote; before its passage, senators were selected by state legislatures.

Not all – certain states do. These states treat the fetus as a child IF the fetus is over a certain amount of weeks, (the same as abortionists do). If the fetus can viably live outside of the womb, then it’s considered a child, hence the murder of the mother is also the murder of the child.

First responders will only be out of work if the sequestor goes through “IF OBAMA CHOOSES THEM TO BE OUT OF WORK”. He gets to pick which things get cut and which don’t based on the actual legislation (that he basically came up with). So when Oblame-a stands before the microphone again, lying through his teeth as he has been doing recently, you’ll know the TRUTH about first responders and their potential for continued employment.

You sure don’t appear to me to be chemically influenced.
BO et al’s most successful skill by far is the ability to deflect blame not matter what the issue. Jay Carney admits the sequester idea was BO’s and administration. Now he is rambling on about the GOP being the problem. All the jobs he is hysterically bullhorning that will alledgedly be lost, is just a method toward his goal…don’t be blamed for anything. His deal. We are talking about such a small fraction of cuts that I can’t see foundation for all the hysteria..except BO deflecting that this was by his design…how could the GOP not go along with it?

It s going broke supporting the Southern Red States. They pay little in taxes and receive most of the spending.
The bigger northern economies have always to a certain extent subsidized a decent standard of living in the very poor rural south.
That is why the South has electricity. Federal ( Northern ) dollars.

DDR: The way the law treats abortion these days, if the mom wants an abortion, it’s just some cells. If the mom wants to keep the baby, it’s a life and to take it would be murder. You notice that while abortions are legal, if someone murders a pregnant lady, they get charged with TWO counts of murder, not one.
Not all – certain states do. These states treat the fetus as a child IF the fetus is over a certain amount of weeks, (the same as abortionists do). If the fetus can viably live outside of the womb, then it’s considered a child, hence the murder of the mother is also the murder of the child.
I haven’t seen any cases where there was a death penalty given to someone who killed a mother in her first trimester. Could be out there, but i just haven’t seen it.
+++++++
GetalifeThey had the 16 year old father on cnn and he wants to have the baby and was shocked her parents decided not to have it. A great episode of 16 and pregnant full of drama.
IMO that’s probably why she got pregnant. Instant stardom if they use you for an episode. However, you know that I have too many cynical bones in my body and her willingness to keep the child could be as she says, because she wants it.

In America we buy a BUNCH of stuff from China. In return we GIVE them money. They GIVE us goods. It’s a universally understood concept.
ALSO in America, we have these instruments called BONDS. China has bought up a bunch of our BONDS. This is ABOVE and SEPARATE from other TRADE transactions.
I hope this helps clear things up and if it doesn’t then please continue on in confusion.

Since that study was done, we’ve had reforms passed and signed into law. The workfare, or welfare to work, was touted by both Clinton and his GOP Congress as a big change in welfare to decrease the numbers on the rolls. Forgive my cynicism, but I doubt GOP controlled states are giving out $25K in welfare in 2013.

“That mother who makes gets 25K/yr of our tax money produces absolutely nothing of worth. Koch employs nearly 70,000 people worldwide and supplies goods and services from it’s efforts which benefit much more than Koch Industries, not to mention providing jobs and all that goes with it. This is idiotic. Like comparing apples and oranges.”
I’m not sure what you mean by “mother who makes gets 25K/yr of our tax money…” You mean a stay at home mom? How does she get 25K of our tax money? Or if you mean a mother who earns 25K a year at a job, how does she get 25K/yr of our tax money. You’re the one that made a big deal out of “Congress makes tax law in this country, or did, the last time I checked. And they could have changed the tax laws anytime in the last 50 or so years but have elected not to do so.” You basically chastised Debbie for suggesting not enough taxes were paid and you based that on “hey, that’s what the tax laws are.” But it doesn’t work on the other end? Hey, that’s what the tax laws are…remember? Way to be consistent.
And as for that mother “produces absolutely nothing of worth”, what about family values? Hey, she’s staying at home raising the family. Isn’t that what conservatives are all about? Or is it just profits, profits, profits baby!!
Darn those stay at home moms. Worthless. Absolutely lazy and worthless. They are producing absolutely nothing of worth. Such a drain on our country……

Koch employs nearly 70,000 people worldwide and supplies goods and services from it’s efforts which benefit much more than Koch Industries, not to mention providing jobs and all that goes with it. This is idiotic. Like comparing apples and oranges.”
I said nothing about a single mom on welfare paying no taxes. The scenario was a single, working mother who earns $25k a year. Let’s put aside the question of why you automatically assume a single mom’s on welfare, not working. Now that you understand the question – are you okay with a single mom who pays no taxes on her earnings (profit) because she’s following the law and not paying more than she’s required to pay, in fact might even get additional taxpayer funds, as you are with a Facebook or a Wells Fargo or a Verizon who have profits in the billions , pay no income taxes and get additional taxpayer funds?
I’m at a car dealership on a computer in the waiting room, so please excuse me if I don’t respond promptly. It’s a short visit and I’ll likely leave soon.

Obama has choices but those choices are limited. You can’t cut certain things without encurring a cost. For example, if you have a contract for a lease you can’t cancel that without paying a penalty. Think of a McDonalds if your revenue decreases what are you going to cut. Supplies and salaries is about all you have. However, much of the cost is in the lease of the building, equipment and utilities.

What in the world is “collectivist” dogma?
———————————————————-
.
The collectivist dogma is an affliction,(usually contracted during government school early education and/or colledge) whereas one is led to believe that the masses(collective) can be personified therefore the wants and needs of the masses are more important than the individual.
To believe this, you must ignore the fact that the collective is nothing but a collection of individuals.
To bestow personification on an inaminate object, one must invent the state, This is why Marxists such as you worship the state.
.
Free you mind.

“She would need their permission to abort but not to have the baby but will need her parents to help raise the child”
Here’s another wrinkle: if they can’t force her to get an abortion, can they force her to put the child up for adoption?
Good question DG! Short answer NO. By law, no one can FORCE a mother to give up her rights to her child unless she is found to be unfit.
However there are end arounds. I’m helping with a case in Florida where they state is trying to take away a mentally disabled (retarded, ’cause the woman can live on her own AND has a job), woman’s rights to her child because when she was pregnant with her child, (about 8 months or so), she was arrested for fighting in public (fist fighting — the woman was about 6 feet and 250 the boyfriend about 5 5 and 125 lbs), with her boyfriend.
They’re claiming that her mental deficiency makes her likely to become violent again with her child AND that her lack of “cognizant ability” to NOT fight a grown man when she was pregnant means that she is not fit to raise the child herself.
Fact is though,, when the child was born the state took the child (which was supposed to be for only UNTIL the mother completed anger management), and gave her to a well-to-do Foster family. the family now wants to adopt the child and the state is pushing t sever the mother’s parental rights.
How I got involved is because I know the Paralegal who is also working on the case, (used to work with me here in Atlanta — same office); and the woman is her sister. They can’t afford a lawyer, (voila), and since I know absolutely nothing about Family Law especially in Florida; Tina, the Paralegal, is doing all the leg work and I’m just mostly a figure head, (I’m licensed to practice in Florida).
I find the case fascinating AND I’m really looking forward to seeing how far the state will try to go in their quest to keep this woman from her child.
The mother has done everything the state has asked her to do: Anger Management Classes; Parenting Classes, etc.; yet the state refuses to return her child to her. Once she passes one hurtle, the state puts up another one and tells her she has to jump through that one too.

Unfortunately, while America was distracted by its WAR on Terror, and a unjustified WAR with IRAQ. The Chinese and Russians were quietly and with great percision infilitrating America’s computer networks including defense, corporations, utilities, entertainment, research & development, Scientific, Financial,Medical, pharmaceutical, even Americans personal computer devices. All the time Preparing for the next century warfare strategies. These two Nations managed to get a 10year jump on America in this Technology. A 10year advantage in computer technology and its uses can be compared to an advantage of the Industrial Age over the Stone age. We are Light Years behind in even acessing what advantages and accessabilty they have over us. The infiltration is to far and to deep to prevent any meaniful defensive action at this time. Our only hope will be in the next generation of computer technology and we should make sure at all costs . they should not piggy back that transfer to prevent even more future damage.
The Republican Party’s overreaching zealousness with the middle east is the primary cause of this disparity. This failure to connect the DOTS is another glaring failure of the Bush Cartel Administration in protecting America and its resources.
We are slowly learning with each passing year, under George Bush’s and the Republican Leadership a monumental failure of historical epic porportions has occurred again and We are just being made aware of the seriousness of that failure.. Meanwhile All Republicans would have ALL of us to think, President Obama is the worst President in U.S. history. History will record that period will be from 2001 through 2008 hands down.
President Obama’s leadership has been exemplary in the handling of this issue and we ALL would be wise to follow his lead in making sure that more is done to protect America and its assets.

A shame the plane got retired. 1989 I think. No live datalink to the ground.

Much of the ill effects of the sequester could be easily avoided IF Congress would grant agency heads the authority to transfer funds so higher-priority negative impacts are avoided. However, Congress won’t do that. They are the ones who originally put the money in the separate categories. They like the control. They want to make sure programs that affect their interests or districts aren’t cut too much.
But bottom line: they could mitigate the impact if they wanted to.

@ Stevei ray,the sequestor is simply a small crude response to the deficiet issue which the pres and congress continues to kick down the road. It is possible that the minor inconveniences of the sequestor will be dwarfted by the budget issues slated for review soon. Either the population will completely blame the GOP or will begin to look to the whitehouse which, if the GOP holds firm to cuts, will have to compromise as the blame begins to be distributed to both parties. I am not at all convinced that this president knows how to compromise, but we will find out. Remember, he has sorrounded himself with like thinkers. The gop also lacks leadership, the country has alot of partisan divide, making any deal difficult.

SR 71 stories
In his book, Sled Driver, SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul writes: “I’ll always remember a certain radio exchange that occurred one day as Walt (my backseater) and I were screaming across Southern California, 13 miles high. We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we entered Los Angeles airspace. Though they didn’t really control us, they did monitor our movement across their scope. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its groundspeed.”
“90 knots” Center replied.
“Moments later, a Twin Beech required the same.”
“120 knots,” Center answered.
“We weren’t the only ones proud of our groundspeed that day as almost instantly an F-18 smugly transmitted, ‘Ah, Center, Dusty 52 requests groundspeed readout.’
“There was a slight pause, then the response, 525 knots on the ground, Dusty”.
“Another silent pause. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my backseater. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison.” “Center, Aspen 20, you got a groundspeed readout for us?”
There was a longer than normal pause…. “Aspen, I show 1,742 knots”
“No further inquiries were heard on that frequency”
In another famous SR-71 story, Los Angeles Center reported receiving a request for clearance to FL 60 (60,000ft).
The incredulous controller, with some disdain in his voice, asked, “How do you plan to get up to 60,000 feet?”
“The pilot (obviously a sled driver), responded, “We don’t plan to go up to it, we plan to go down to it.”
He was cleared…

Forgive my cynicism, but I doubt GOP controlled states are giving out $25K in welfare in 2013.

For example, if you have a contract for a lease you can’t cancel that without paying a penalty. Think of a McDonalds if your revenue decreases what are you going to cut. Supplies and salaries is about all you have. However, much of the cost is in the lease of the building, equipment and utilities.”
I know that, and you know that, but what Obama is saying is he’s cutting out beef and bun purchases from his McDonalds. The point is, HE has the choices of what gets cut. If he chooses to send first responders to the streets instead of furloughs or cancelling that $1MM conference in Vegas, that’s his choice. He’s pissing on the people’s heads and telling them it’s raining.

It’s hard for me to say for sure, since I’ve never had Doxies…but I did raise 2 dogs together from puppies and they ended up hating each other and I had to keep them separated. But on the other hand, I’ve always had males and those 2 were the only ones I ever had a problem with.

If I am not mistaken, GWB was responsible for about $800 billion for the 2 unfunded wars (which was made up with the tax increase that Obama just got). This happens to be around the same amount as Obama and the Dems did in their stimulus plan that paid off the people that got them elected.

Fred – Come to think of it my sis had a miniature female doxie for several years and then they brought home two large dogs a pit mix and a Shepard mix and later a big ole bird dog…Feeding time was funny as the miniature turned into a hell hound and went after the other 3 if they came near her when she was eating. Once she was done she then “allowed” the other 3 to eat…It was a hoot watching the 3 big dogs waiting and watching for her to finish…she was the Alpha dog inside the house and the other 3 went along with it

Since y’all were talking a bit about cheap labor, earlier, I was wondering if anyone saw this from earlier in the week…
http://www.salon.com/2013/02/19/southern_poverty_pimps/
The real choice facing America in the 21st century is the same one that faced it in the 19th and 20th centuries — Northernomics or Southernomics?
Northernomics is the high-road strategy of building a flourishing national economy by means of government-business cooperation and government investment in R&D, infrastructure and education. Although this program of Hamiltonianism (named after Washington’s first Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton) has been championed by maverick Southerners as prominent as George Washington, Henry Clay and Abraham Lincoln (born in Kentucky to a Southern family), the building of a modern, high-tech, high-wage economy has been supported chiefly by political parties based in New England and the Midwest, from the Federalists and the Whigs through the Lincoln Republicans and today’s Northern Democrats.
Southernomics is radically different. The purpose of the age-old economic development strategy of the Southern states has never been to allow them to compete with other states or countries on the basis of superior innovation or living standards. Instead, for generations Southern economic policymakers have sought to secure a lucrative second-tier role for the South in the national and world economies, as a supplier of commodities like cotton and oil and gas and a source of cheap labor for footloose corporations. This strategy of specializing in commodities and cheap labor is intended to enrich the Southern oligarchy. It doesn’t enrich the majority of Southerners, white, black or brown, but it is not intended to.
[...]
Apart from a high federal minimum wage, nothing could be a greater threat to the Southern cheap-labor economic strategy than universal, standardized federal social insurance. In order to maximize the dependence of Southern workers on Southern employers in the great low-wage labor pool of the former Confederacy, it would be best to have no welfare at all, only local charity (funded and controlled, naturally, by the local wealthy families).

It doesn’t matter at all if they are her parents and provide every resource for her.
Nobody can force anyone to have an “optional” medical procedure.
If it was a health risk and her life was in danger, they could make that call.
Take away the emotion, this would be similar to a parent forcing a teen to have plastic surgery and the teen didn’t want it.
In both cases it is a non-patient making a decision that is optional and optional procedures cannot be performed without patient consent.
I tried and was unable to find any precedent set where as an optional procedure was forced upon a person of age to give verbal consent.
I did find this though……

“Show me where this is happening to the majority of the people( or even more then 100) making $25,000 being single parents and then I would be willing to have a discussion about it with you.”
It’s irrelevant. The question, as I’m sure you remember as you’re trying so hard to avoid it, was if Sinkwich and kayaker 71 are okay with corporations who earn billions paying no federal income taxes and receiving government subsidies, are they okay with low-income individuals and families also paying no federal income taxes?
As far as your diversion: your contention is there are 100 or fewer single moms in the country who make $25k a year? You really going with that? (hint: earnings per year divided by 2080 standard workhours per year equals pay rate. You think that pay rate sounds suspicious?).
I notice you did not ask if it’s common for corporations showing hundreds of millions or over a billion in profits to pay no federal income taxes. You really don’t want to go there, do you?
So how about answering the original question? The level of pay or family circumstance is irrelevant. It’s about those earning a profit or return on their labor being exempt from paying federal income tax.
But you might just have a bare, flickering inkling of where this is going, so it’s entirely understandable you want to divert, avoid and dismiss rather than answering. It’s probably too threatening to your skewed view of reality.

Aaaannnndd…..
you avoided answering again.
You are consistent, I’ll give you that.
Marty Huggins’
Started yesterday with Sinkwich saying he was fine with corporations paying zero tax because they’re following the tax law and should not pay one bit more than required. I then asked him if he was fine with ‘the 47%” who pay no federal income taxes because they, too, are following the tax law and should not pay one bit more than required.
Sinkwich left.
Then we had another blogger pop in. He too, avoided when his attention was redirected to the original question.
Then this morning, enters kayaker 71.
““(kayaker 71) So the Kochs ought to be paying more than the law says they should. I am sure, because of your belief in higher taxes and more government spending, that you send the IRS a little extra at tax time….. you know, just to make you feel better. If you want to get a big old hard on about who pays what, you are blaming the wrong people. Congress makes tax law in this country, or did, the last time I checked. And they could have changed the tax laws anytime in the last 50 or so years but have elected not to do so.”
(Paul) kayaker 71, that pretty much parallels what Sinkwich said yesterday about corporations when I asked him if he was fine that corporations that make billions, in fact get taxpayer subsidies (Facebooks’s on par with Solyndra) pay zero federal income tax.
You’re fine if a corporation with profits of over a billion a year pays no tax and gets taxpayer assistance, you feel the same when it’s a single mom earning $25,000 a year, right?”
kayaker 71 responded in context of the single mom getting her earnings from welfare. When his error was pointed out, he left.
Then in popped td. True to form, he completely missed the big issue and zeroed in on how many single moms earn $25,000. We’re still in ‘td: f-o-c-u-s’ mode with him. Lots of slipping and sliding and yelling ‘Look, squirrel!!!’ but we’re hanging in there in attempting to have him address the big issue.

I believe the truth to which DDR’s referring is ‘answer the question.’
Here it is again. Always good to hit reset and get back on track.
Given your response that you’re fine with corporations who earn profits not paying federal income taxes because they are obeying the law and should not pay more than lawfully required, are you also ‘fine’ that 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax? Because they shouldn’t pay more than is legally required? Because Congress made the laws and these people are obeying them? You’re fine if a corporation with profits of over a billion a year pays no tax and gets taxpayer assistance, you feel the same when it’s a single mom earning $25,000 a year, right?”
(if the ’single mom’ part trips you up, just substitute ‘families and individuals of low to moderate means)

It’s like JamVet pointed out to me years ago: many, many people peruse this blog and never post. Some who do post take it all in and arrive at conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses and inconsistencies in various positions. Sometimes those thoughts get lifted and posted on other forums.
But once in a while, I just like watching what happens when the dim light of understanding appears and the sailor, in a panic as he gets closer, realizes he isn’t going to reach the horizon and drop off.
But most of our sailors simply turn the ship around, wipe their foreheads and mutter, ‘whew! THAT was a close one…”

We know the specific buildings the cyber attacks are coming from in China.
Obama should calmly tell the Chinese that if our power grid, water, etc. is compromised, and one American loses their life as a result, we will use tactical nuclear weapons to eliminate the cyber-threat in China.
Yes, I mean that. But I have no faith that Obama would have the stones to even consider an action like this.

The Chinese government is a greater threat to US security than AlQuida could ever be. The Chinese are trying to put the US in a position where it would neutralize our capacity to respond to certain national and international emergency situations.
It seems to me that the US should detach from China by educating our people to make what we need and return to markets with less hostile governments. My imagination tells me that some US defense and offense systems are so profoundly compromised by China that in a crisis they would be rendered useless.

Let me break it down.
Either you are okay with corporations following the law and paying zero federal income tax on their profits, and getting additional subsidies, AND you are therefore okay with the 47% paying no federal income tax and maybe getting additional subsidies,
OR
you are okay with corporations following the law and paying zero federal income tax on their profits, and getting additional subsidies, and you are NOT okay with the 47% paying no federal income tax and maybe getting additional subsidies,

You might want to look at your links before you post. Or at least understand them.
See the middle column? It’s labeled ‘constant’ dollars. Accounts for the time value of money. Converts all years to same value as they’d have in a specified year. Because a dollar in 1920 is worth a different amount than a dollar in 2010.
But back to that middle section. Constant 2005 dollars.
See the receipts for 09, 10 and 11? Let’s go thru this. Take 2010. Receipts are 1,899 (in billions). Now lets back up to 2001 (guess who was president then?). Receipts are 2,215.3. Rule of Thumb: 1,899 is LOWER than $2,215.3 and 2001 is BEFORE 2010.
Now if you want to have even more fun take a look at ‘receipts as percent of GDP” (That’s “Gross Domestic Product.” Smaller numbers mean it’s less than larger numbers.

First, (do not take this the wrong way and it is not personal) but your brother is a total dumb ass or is lying to you if he is saying taxes are not factored into the bottom line. I am a small business owner that sells a service and a property landlord that rents houses and can tell you without hesitation that the taxes I have to pay are calculated into the prices I charge or the rent I ask for.
A company or corporation is in business to make a profit. If you do not make a profit then you go out of business (that is called bankruptcy) Taxes are an expense of doing business. When you are prices a product or service then you add up all of your expenses and then you add in your profit margin and then that is the price you charge.
To say taxes are not embedded into the price of products or services are just crazy.

O. P. Teacher — “Why won’t we do it to China?”
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army, that’s why (the entire Chinese military). It’s the single largest standing army in the world, and it’s about half again the size of ours.
Even if you add in reserves and paramilitary organizations like our Coast Guard, the Chinese *still* have half again as many people in uniform as we do; about 4.5 million compared to 3 million. And they have a LOT more people to draw from to build up their military. If the Chinese had as many people per capita in uniform as we do, their military would be TRIPLE its current size.

“See the middle column? It’s labeled ‘constant’ dollars. Accounts for the time value of money. Converts all years to same value as they’d have in a specified year. Because a dollar in 1920 is worth a different amount than a dollar in 2010.”
And why are they taking 2005 dollars as the standard?
“See the receipts for 09, 10 and 11? Let’s go thru this. Take 2010. Receipts are 1,899 (in billions). Now lets back up to 2001 (guess who was president then?). Receipts are 2,215.3. Rule of Thumb: 1,899 is LOWER than $2,215.3 and 2001 is BEFORE 2010.”
Now let us take a closer look at these fuzzy numbers: 2005 says that we took in real money of 2,153.6 and that was worth 2,153.6 but then in 2006 real revenues was 2,406.9 but was only worth 2,324.1. Wow in one years period of time real revenues went up but magically are worth a considerable amount less then just the year before. The main point is that you want to take these fuzzy math number instead of the real numbers?
“Now if you want to have even more fun take a look at ‘receipts as percent of GDP” (That’s “Gross Domestic Product.” Smaller numbers mean it’s less than larger numbers.”
Why should government revenue remain a % of GDP? If that is the case then why are you progressives gripping so much about what is spent on the military when as a % of GDP it is way lower then it has ever been. Mean tested entitlement programs as a % of GDP is at all time highs as well. Should we not cap them as a % of GDP?
