The Chinese gov’t knows that you’re reading this

From The Washington Post:

“Start asking security experts which powerful Washington institutions have been penetrated by Chinese cyberspies, and this is the usual answer: almost all of them.

The list of those hacked in recent years includes law firms, think tanks, news organizations, human rights groups, contractors, congressional offices, embassies and federal agencies.

The information compromised by such intrusions, security experts say, would be enough to map how power is exercised in Washington to a remarkably nuanced degree. The only question, they say, is whether the Chinese have the analytical resources to sort through the massive troves of data they steal every day….

“They’re trying to make connections between prominent people who work at think tanks, prominent donors that they’ve heard of and how the government makes decisions,” said Dan Blumenthal, director of Asian studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which also has been hacked. “It’s a sophisticated intelligence-gathering effort at trying to make human-network linkages of people in power, whether they be in Congress or the executive branch.”

According to experts, the Chinese hack everybody. They hack major corporations and steal trade secrets — attacks against Google, Apple, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have been publicized in recent years. They hack lowly individual dissidents. They hack, or attempt to hack, major agencies in the U.S. government, including the Pentagon, CIA and White House and most certainly the Department of Commerce. Given the byzantine ways of the Chinese government, they almost certainly hack each other as well.

The natural response to such a discovery is outrage, and to some degree that outrage is justified. It is, at some level, a violation of our national sovereignty. But it gets complicated because China is hardly alone. A lot of other countries are aggressive about hacking into overseas computer networks, including the Israelis, the French and the Russians.

Oh, and the Americans too. It would be naive in the extreme to believe that the U.S. government isn’t running cyber-spying operations of its own. Those operations probably don’t extend to efforts to steal commercial secrets of foreign companies so that data can then be handed to U.S. companies, which the Chinese and other governments do. But on issues of national security, we are no doubt just as invasive as anybody else.

In other words, while everybody is a victim in this thing, everybody is also a villain. Nobody’s clean.

It’s also important to distinguish between cyberspying and cyberwarfare. If you can penetrate a highly sensitive computer network and steal data, you may also be able to do great damage to that network at a time of your choosing.

As President Obama put it in his State of the Union address:

“We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, our air-traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy.”

And again, it would be naive to believe that the U.S. government is not building similar capacity to bring down important computer networks in other countries, just in case it’s needed. In this game, like any other, you need to be able to play offense as well as defense.

To handle such duties, in 2010 the Defense Department created the U.S. CyberCommand, which is now slated for a major expansion. Eighty percent of the thousands of new personnel to be devoted to the effort will be military; 20 percent will be civilian experts. In fact, some of that expanded operation may be headquartered right here in Georgia, at Fort Gordon outside Augusta. That would be a big economic boost to the state, given the potential high-tech spinoffs from such an operation.

In other words, what we’re witnessing is a quiet, high-stakes state of virtual warfare that will be permanent and escalating.

“Obama has choices but those choices are limited. You can’t cut certain things without encurring a cost. For example, if you have a contract for a lease you can’t cancel that without paying a penalty. Think of a McDonalds if your revenue decreases what are you going to cut. Supplies and salaries is about all you have. However, much of the cost is in the lease of the building, equipment and utilities.”

I know that, and you know that, but what Obama is saying is he’s cutting out beef and bun purchases from his McDonalds. The point is, HE has the choices of what gets cut. If he chooses to send first responders to the streets instead of furloughs or cancelling that $1MM conference in Vegas, that’s his choice. He’s pissing on the people’s heads and telling them it’s raining.

I imagine y’all did. I saw a pair of A-10s during Team Spirit one year (for you civilians, that used to be around Feb/Mar each year in South Korea), and they were just HOWLING down this narrow-azz valley, whipping back and forth and up and down as if they were doing some freakish combination of a snake dance and nap-of-the-earth flying to avoid enemy fire. Down on the valley floor, they sounded like twin tornadoes coming our way.

Hard to tell, but to some extent it depends on you. You got to let the older dog show the younger that he’s the boss…but not let him get too rough. If they’re both males, it might or might not work out.

It’s hard for me to say for sure, since I’ve never had Doxies…but I did raise 2 dogs together from puppies and they ended up hating each other and I had to keep them separated. But on the other hand, I’ve always had males and those 2 were the only ones I ever had a problem with.

If I am not mistaken, GWB was responsible for about $800 billion for the 2 unfunded wars (which was made up with the tax increase that Obama just got). This happens to be around the same amount as Obama and the Dems did in their stimulus plan that paid off the people that got them elected.

Since y’all were talking a bit about cheap labor, earlier, I was wondering if anyone saw this from earlier in the week…

http://www.salon.com/2013/02/19/southern_poverty_pimps/

The real choice facing America in the 21st century is the same one that faced it in the 19th and 20th centuries — Northernomics or Southernomics?

Northernomics is the high-road strategy of building a flourishing national economy by means of government-business cooperation and government investment in R&D, infrastructure and education. Although this program of Hamiltonianism (named after Washington’s first Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton) has been championed by maverick Southerners as prominent as George Washington, Henry Clay and Abraham Lincoln (born in Kentucky to a Southern family), the building of a modern, high-tech, high-wage economy has been supported chiefly by political parties based in New England and the Midwest, from the Federalists and the Whigs through the Lincoln Republicans and today’s Northern Democrats.

Southernomics is radically different. The purpose of the age-old economic development strategy of the Southern states has never been to allow them to compete with other states or countries on the basis of superior innovation or living standards. Instead, for generations Southern economic policymakers have sought to secure a lucrative second-tier role for the South in the national and world economies, as a supplier of commodities like cotton and oil and gas and a source of cheap labor for footloose corporations. This strategy of specializing in commodities and cheap labor is intended to enrich the Southern oligarchy. It doesn’t enrich the majority of Southerners, white, black or brown, but it is not intended to.

[...]

Apart from a high federal minimum wage, nothing could be a greater threat to the Southern cheap-labor economic strategy than universal, standardized federal social insurance. In order to maximize the dependence of Southern workers on Southern employers in the great low-wage labor pool of the former Confederacy, it would be best to have no welfare at all, only local charity (funded and controlled, naturally, by the local wealthy families).

Now more than ever that OWG (one world government) dream needs to come true.

Ultimately it will be so, of course; it’s a bit silly to imagine otherwise.

should change that question mark to an exclamation mark

reminds me of a flannel-shirted Republican presidential aspirant from long ago.

It doesn’t matter at all if they are her parents and provide every resource for her.

Nobody can force anyone to have an “optional” medical procedure.
If it was a health risk and her life was in danger, they could make that call.

Take away the emotion, this would be similar to a parent forcing a teen to have plastic surgery and the teen didn’t want it.

In both cases it is a non-patient making a decision that is optional and optional procedures cannot be performed without patient consent.

I tried and was unable to find any precedent set where as an optional procedure was forced upon a person of age to give verbal consent.

I did find this though……

Fred – cute puppy! What breed?

It’s a Fredhound.

They are fun and protective, but will bite if you use the words “Fox” or “Rush”.

Also, they don’t bark like other dogs. Theirs sound like “Delusionallickspittle”.

“Show me where this is happening to the majority of the people( or even more then 100) making $25,000 being single parents and then I would be willing to have a discussion about it with you.”

It’s irrelevant. The question, as I’m sure you remember as you’re trying so hard to avoid it, was if Sinkwich and kayaker 71 are okay with corporations who earn billions paying no federal income taxes and receiving government subsidies, are they okay with low-income individuals and families also paying no federal income taxes?

As far as your diversion: your contention is there are 100 or fewer single moms in the country who make $25k a year? You really going with that? (hint: earnings per year divided by 2080 standard workhours per year equals pay rate. You think that pay rate sounds suspicious?).

I notice you did not ask if it’s common for corporations showing hundreds of millions or over a billion in profits to pay no federal income taxes. You really don’t want to go there, do you?

So how about answering the original question? The level of pay or family circumstance is irrelevant. It’s about those earning a profit or return on their labor being exempt from paying federal income tax.

But you might just have a bare, flickering inkling of where this is going, so it’s entirely understandable you want to divert, avoid and dismiss rather than answering. It’s probably too threatening to your skewed view of reality.

DDR – TBG – Hiya doing!! I’ve seen you on the blogs once or twice, but you’re always busy talking to that shiftless, no good BAMMA person and you never say “hi” to anyone else.

Hey DDR. I’m here everyday, I just don’t comment. Sometimes, by the time I get on, everything has been said.

I’ll do better, as you always make me laugh.
