“Start asking security experts which powerful Washington institutions have been penetrated by Chinese cyberspies, and this is the usual answer: almost all of them.
The list of those hacked in recent years includes law firms, think tanks, news organizations, human rights groups, contractors, congressional offices, embassies and federal agencies.
The information compromised by such intrusions, security experts say, would be enough to map how power is exercised in Washington to a remarkably nuanced degree. The only question, they say, is whether the Chinese have the analytical resources to sort through the massive troves of data they steal every day….
“They’re trying to make connections between prominent people who work at think tanks, prominent donors that they’ve heard of and how the government makes decisions,” said Dan Blumenthal, director of Asian studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which also has been hacked. “It’s a sophisticated intelligence-gathering effort at trying to make human-network linkages of people in power, whether they be in Congress or the executive branch.”
According to experts, the Chinese hack everybody. They hack major corporations and steal trade secrets — attacks against Google, Apple, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have been publicized in recent years. They hack lowly individual dissidents. They hack, or attempt to hack, major agencies in the U.S. government, including the Pentagon, CIA and White House and most certainly the Department of Commerce. Given the byzantine ways of the Chinese government, they almost certainly hack each other as well.
The natural response to such a discovery is outrage, and to some degree that outrage is justified. It is, at some level, a violation of our national sovereignty. But it gets complicated because China is hardly alone. A lot of other countries are aggressive about hacking into overseas computer networks, including the Israelis, the French and the Russians.
Oh, and the Americans too. It would be naive in the extreme to believe that the U.S. government isn’t running cyber-spying operations of its own. Those operations probably don’t extend to efforts to steal commercial secrets of foreign companies so that data can then be handed to U.S. companies, which the Chinese and other governments do. But on issues of national security, we are no doubt just as invasive as anybody else.
In other words, while everybody is a victim in this thing, everybody is also a villain. Nobody’s clean.
It’s also important to distinguish between cyberspying and cyberwarfare. If you can penetrate a highly sensitive computer network and steal data, you may also be able to do great damage to that network at a time of your choosing.
As President Obama put it in his State of the Union address:
“We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, our air-traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy.”
And again, it would be naive to believe that the U.S. government is not building similar capacity to bring down important computer networks in other countries, just in case it’s needed. In this game, like any other, you need to be able to play offense as well as defense.
To handle such duties, in 2010 the Defense Department created the U.S. CyberCommand, which is now slated for a major expansion. Eighty percent of the thousands of new personnel to be devoted to the effort will be military; 20 percent will be civilian experts. In fact, some of that expanded operation may be headquartered right here in Georgia, at Fort Gordon outside Augusta. That would be a big economic boost to the state, given the potential high-tech spinoffs from such an operation.
In other words, what we’re witnessing is a quiet, high-stakes state of virtual warfare that will be permanent and escalating.

So the Kochs ought to be paying more than the law says they should. I am sure, because of your belief in higher taxes and more government spending, that you send the IRS a little extra at tax time….. you know, just to make you feel better. If you want to get a big old hard on about who pays what, you are blaming the wrong people. Congress makes tax law in this country, or did, the last time I checked. And they could have changed the tax laws anytime in the last 50 or so years but have elected not to do so.

Jay,
I hate to quible, however, your argument that since we also conduct cyberwarfare makes us equally guilty as the Chinese is not an argument that holds water. It reminds me of that “false equivalence” argument that some journalist engage in to be seen as “objective”. I think that we would have heard from private experts in the field of cyber security if the US was conducting unethical activities in this regard. The evidence of Chinese abuse in this overwhelming and we need to call a Spade a Spade.
The Chinese want to dominate any and all economic competitors any way they can.
I don’t think that our attempts to slow the Iranians down using cyberwarfare (STUXNET) was a bad thing.

Lots of factors at work here. One may be simply to try to understand us. But to what end that understanding will be put is open to question.
Another is their obsession with information, any information, all information. It’s a hallmark of a paranoid leadership within autocratic governments. China’s interesting – trying to loosen economic freedom, which leads to a loss of control, which leads to greater efforts to monitor and control. Just because it’s widespread and covers many facets does not mean it’s indiscriminate.
But the real question is, to what end is that knowledge used? There was this Chinese guy born a couple thousand years ago. Chinese revere him. Nearly every modern military person in a responsible position is at least marginally familiar with his works. Graduate courses in business study him. Sun Tzu. Wrote “The Art of War.” It’s pretty short, but one can spend weeks studying and applying a few sentences. Chapter 13, “The Use of Spies’ states:
“…Hostile armies may face each other for years, striving for the victory which is decided in a single day. This being so, to remain in ignorance of the enemy’s condition simply because one grudges the outlay of a hundred ounces of silver in honors and emoluments, is the height of inhumanity…what enables the wise sovereign and the good general to strike and conquer, and achieve things beyond the reach of ordinary men, is FOREKNOWLEDGE. Now this foreknowledge cannot be elicited from spirits; it cannot be obtained inductively from experience, nor by any deductive calculation. Knowledge of the enemy’s dispositions can only be obtained from other men…Without subtle ingenuity of mind, one cannot make certain of the truth of their reports. Be subtle! be subtle! and use your spies for every kind of business…The end and aim of spying in all its five varieties is knowledge of the enemy…”

If you want to think about something scary then look no further at how the Democratic party (example purpose only not attempting to slur because both parties will do this by 2016) used data mining and person specific marketing to get maximize voter turnout last year. The party was able to gather enough individual data on people to determine if the person was a potential voter and then gathered enough information of the person to be able to specifically market (brainwash) that person to think they were on the exact same mindset as Obama.

kayaker 71, that pretty much parallels what Sinkwich said yesterday about corporations when I asked him if he was fine that corporations that make billions, in fact get taxpayer subsidies (Facebooks’s on par with Solyndra) pay zero federal income tax. He said it didn’t bother him a bit, repeated what you said about not paying more than legally required, etc.
But I asked Sinkwich a followup, which he ducked. I’m hoping you’ll address it.
Given your response, are you also ‘fine’ that 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax? Because they shouldn’t pay more than is legally required? Because Congress made the laws and these people are obeying them? You’re fine if a corporation with profits of over a billion a year pays no tax and gets taxpayer assistance, you feel the same when it’s a single mom earning $25,000 a year, right?

For some reason, no one knows why, it takes a company 20 seconds to take money from you that they feel you owe them, (via having your banking information); but if they’re wrong OR if they owe YOU money, it takes them 2 weeks to put the money back in your account.

Fortunately, cars have lots of uses that don’t involve shooting bad guys, whereas shooting bad guys seems to be one of the primary reasons the NRA wants folks to have them. You even alluded to it yourself in trying to distinguish good people with guns from bad people with guns.
If you have a gun and you shoot my or my wife — even accidentally — then you are not a good person to me. Case closed.
“Coward” — ““Among the many misdeeds of British rule in India, history will look

Illinois state senator pushes anti-anonymity bill
“A recently introduced bill in the Illinois state Senate would require anonymous website comment posters to reveal their identities if they want to keep their comments online.
The bill, called the Internet Posting Removal Act, is sponsored by Illinois state Sen. Ira Silverstein. It states that a “web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless the anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate.”
The bill, which does not ask for or clarify requirements from entities requesting the comment removal, would take effect 90 days after becoming law.

I remember when the GOP used to pride itself for it’s patriotism and respect, even reverence for Uncle Sam.
“Money changes everything”. The Boss. Wise man.

Mr. Numbers, since you’re here today, I wanted to know if you’ve seen/heard about this and what’s your comment on it.
I’m kinda on the fence about the issue. But I know you feel very strongly about it and wanted your input.

Maybe the chicoms aren’t satisfied with the return on all of that money the US keeps borrowing from them to support all the gov’t crap and inefficiency that we cannot live without cause we’d die within days. Now they just hack on through our “security” systems to take a peak around to see what they want to cherry pick. This country is being run by rank amateurs.

Yeah but the forking idiots who listen to Rushie and watch FOX keep electing those rank amateurs and sending them back to Congress. If we can get rid of that majority Republican Congress then the adults and pro’s can get things done.

Anniston City Manager Don Hoyt plans to hire a new city attorney, an action he said is part of a movement for “change from the top” at City Hall.
Last week, Hoyt announced his intention to retire by the beginning of September, a recognition, he said, of the public’s cry for change during last fall’s elections.
“I felt like the folks out there wanted change from the top,” he said. “That included me and the city attorney.”
As part of this change, Hoyt notified the City Council on Feb. 11 of his decision to end the city’s relationship with Cleo Thomas, who had served as city attorney since 2009. The city put out requests for qualifications from prospective attorneys on Feb. 14. Hoyt added that Thomas was not an employee of the city and therefore was not fired. Instead, he billed the city for services rendered.
Attempts to reach Thomas on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Thomas, a longtime Anniston resident and Harvard Law School graduate, is a former member of the University of Alabama board of trustees, and in 1976 became that school’s first black president of the Student Government Association. He also was the first black member of the Anniston Country Club, joining in 1993.

Some of these Republicans remind me of an episode from high school. About 300 students in the class, had an election for homecoming queen, one of the girl’s moms who wasn’t elected went to the principal and carried on about how her daughter was so pretty, so popular, so smart, there was NO WAY she wasn’t elected. The voting was rigged. There was a conspiracy. On and on. Finally the principal went to the safe (yep, it was a big deal), pulled out the ballots – and mom found her darling daughter that everyone really, really loved… got a dozen votes.
And that’s what I think of when I think of today’s complaining Republicans.

Debbie, 10:42,
And you really believe all of this Bozo bullsh*t that he goes around flaunting to his heart’s content. He has lied to the American electorate more than anyone since FDR yet, somehow, the manipulation of the facts seems to trump reality. He has one thing in mind, more money from the wealthy, which he thinks will solve all of our financial woes. Doesn’t solve the problems but it sure helps to get politicians re-elected. This clown would do anything, say anything, true or not, to further his agenda. If you believe most anything that he has to say, your intelligence takes on a whole new meaning. No, Debbie, I don’t believe him and no thinking American does.

It is sad to see China’s government move sp quickly to keep their government growing but we can’t because of the gop.
China does not inflect self inflicted wounds to our economy like our gop.
They have unity and patriotism.
They are invested in green energy to combat the pollution.
They have brand new infrastructure and high speed trains.
They are kicking our buts and no longer need to steal data because the jobs moved there.

Well, if that’s what you think, then why do you come here at all?
You know what kind of discussion you’re going to get here, so why go to the trouble if you’re that upset about it?
