Within the GOP, ‘battle lines are being drawn’

“Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away.”

———————————-

From conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, a cry for a RINO uprising:

“Indeed, as the base seeks El Savior, isn’t it time for a RINO Rebellion?

Take a cue from the tea party, RINOs. Embrace your alienation. Slap a bumper sticker on your angst and rally that dispassion. Witness how bloggers turned others’ insults into a movement. What were random basement bloggers in terrycloth bathrobes and Uggs are now the respected and influential Pajamas Media, a.k.a. PJ Media.

Own your insult, in other words. Why should RINOs hang their heads in shame and be relegated to the fringes of their party? The party is the fringe. Isn’t it time to reclaim the salt lick? RINOs need to be defiantly proud, aggressively centrist and unapologetically sane.

… RINOs need to stop being so normal and grant their better angels a sabbatical. Forget taking back the country. Start by taking back your party. Do it for your country.

RINOs: The Strong. The Proud. The Many.”

—————————–

From former GOP congressman Joe Scarborough, a plea to fellow Republicans to flee the nice, cozy bubble and experience “Reality World”:

“… it was the Conservative Entertainment Complex that led Republican thought leaders, grass-roots activists and even the presidential candidate himself into believing that a GOP victory was imminent on Election Day. The Romney team was so isolated deep inside this conservative media bubble that they continued to believe victory was theirs well into the evening.

That embarrassing political tale proved that conservatives had finally become what they had once mocked: an insular movement so lost in its own echo chamber that it rarely made contact with those who didn’t share their world view.

… Conservatives should celebrate the gains they have made in the media world over the past two decades. But their greatest challenge moving forward is to begin breaking down the walls they have built that keeps them locked inside a comfort zone that distorts political reality and cedes great advantages to Democratic candidates. What conservatives must do instead is dare to think different, apply eternal truths to current realities and then start spreading their gospel of conservatism to the swing voters who have rejected them in five of six presidential races.”

———————————-

From Ramesh Ponnuru, longtime conservative intellectual and visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a reminder that it ain’t 1980 anymore and M*A*S*H ain’t the number one hit on TV:

Today’s Republicans are very good at tending the fire of Ronald Reagan’s memory but not nearly as good at learning from his successes. They slavishly adhere to the economic program that Reagan developed to meet the challenges of the late 1970s and early 1980s, ignoring the fact that he largely overcame those challenges, and now we have new ones. It’s because Republicans have not moved on from that time that Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, in their responses to the State of the Union address last week, offered so few new ideas….

In his first Inaugural Address, Reagan famously said that “government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” The less famous yet crucial beginning of that sentence was “in our present crisis.” The question is whether conservatism revives by attending to today’s conditions, or becomes something withered and dead. “

———————————-
John Podhoretz, in the conservative New York Post, on those in the GOP who value purity over success:

It is true that the Old Establishment has much to answer for.

It has become encrusted with parasitic barnacles. There are policy wonks who last had something interesting to say during the Ford administration.

There is a profiteering consultant class that makes out like bandits whether the GOP wins or loses and now is actively stifling innovation of the sort that the Obamans deployed so brilliantly in 2008 and 2012.

Still, there is something bizarre about the notion that Republicans are acting illegitimately if they try to take a role in internal Republican politics.

The key difference right now is that the Old Establishment is obsessed with expanding the number of voters who’ll pull the lever for Republicans — while the New Establishment is so consumed with putting an Oedipal stake in the heart of the Old Guys that it seems actually to prefer a smaller GOP.

Which is nuts.”

I just thought you should know that it’s not just me saying it.

If the Republicans ran the economy into the ground, then why isn’t the economy improving? Dems/libs have had 5 years now, and it is getting worse. At what point do libs ask themselves, ‘maybe we are NOT going in the right direction’.

As the ship continues to sink, you libs have no one to blame but yourselves.

I am going to go play a round of golf. Enjoy your day.

“I love it when progressives attempt to tell Conservatives that the only way for them to survive is to become progressive lite.”

td, it’s not progressives sending that message.

Every person quoted above considers himself or herself a conservative and a Republican, yet they also feel that the party as currently constituted is in deep trouble and in some cases may not have a place for them any longer. In 15 minutes, I could find another half-dozen or more of such statements, all by people who identify as conservative.

If you care to dismiss them as RINOs, then I would argue that you prove their point.

You have been around long enough Jay to know that this is not anything new in politics. The Dems did the same thing after Bush was re elected in 2004. They had a fight within the party and the progressive purest won and took the party to the far left as seen in the Clinton caucus has just about disappeared in the house.

The Republicans are now having their internal battle (and might I add have been doing this since 2006) as to which wing will control the message of the party. The establishment part of the party (which I might add are the same people that told Conservatives that Romney, McCain and Bob Dole were the only way to win) are trying to keep control against the Conservative wing (who nominated Reagan and GWB as the establishment said they would lose in a land slide).

I thought the Republicans were pretty much toast after 2008. But yet here we are in 2012 and they control the state legislatures and the house while the Dems control the Senate and the White House. In 2008 they controlled none of these. Prior to 1994 their only hope was winning the White House.
But yet the Republicans are the one trying to figure out how to win more. Puzzling! The Democratic party of 1932 to 1994 was a juggernaut. The Republican party of that era was a joke.

Really the right holds a monopoly on dishonesty? The real shame here is that the Democrats are perfectly happy to march in lockstep with whatever Obama does, especially bombing with drones, when they were so upset when Bush was doing the same thing. They should be fighting within their own party, but they are so partisan they would rather support Obama on the road to hell than actually show some courage and stand up for what’s right.

Pathetic that the supposed party of civil liberties would rather distract and bash the GOP than face their own problems. A vote for Obama was a vote for murder.

We are doomed for another round of economic failure as long as that corruption is allowed. No entity is too large to fail and if allowed to continue this country itself will fail protecting it. When I talk to the Republicans, you have to in this part of the country, isolation is not an option, and they are convinced they are not getting their message out correctly. It is not the message itself, they believe it is the method. Amazing how dense this is

That amazes me too! I tried to explain it to my “Little Sisters” the other day when we were talking about politics and their roles that are upcoming in the future. The “Littles” were telling me that some of the republican ideals made sense to them; yet others were…ummm……….basically crazy.

They were trying to figure out why they kept saying the same things and kept pretending that they were saying something different. I used the analogy of the words used to describe African Americans.

First it was – N Word. Then Black. Then Colored. Then Black again. Now its African American. But no matter the metamorphisms, N Word is still used today.

=====
Not on federal lands. That’s where O’bozo rules.

Well, you should have sense enough to thank god for that don’t you agree? Not everything should be “for profit”. If capitalism had its way, it would’ve found a way to make us pay for breathing air a long time ago.

=====
Conservatives control 30 governorships, 29 state houses totally and at least 1 chamber in another 6 and will control the US house of Reps until at least 2022.

And when they got control what laws did they enact that the people who put them in power abhor and started fighting against? (Think Virginia, Florida, Wisconsin and Lousiana). Lets see if the republicans can hold on to all that “state” power come the next election cycle. You can’t keep pizzing on people and calling it rain before someone finally wakes up and takes you task.

=====

The GOP has no one to fight anymore, so they’ve started to fight each other. Fun stuff.

Another GREAT analogy! I’ve got dibbs on this one too! Sorry – you’ve got to be quick around here.
=======

Depending on the outcome of the cosmetics of the sequestration ‘fight’ the Repubs may hold the house 2014 and spoil the remainder of the Obama Presidency. It’s pitiful to see the powerful pretend to be victims on both sides.

You go boy! Power to the Frog!!

I really marvel at how Bookman finds his sources about GOP sell-outs and conservative impostors. It does make for good axe grinding and leftist chum baiting. However, being that this is a liberal opinion web site, Bookman’s propaganda machine is what it is.

The truth of the matter revolves around the newly created Democrat propaganda that the Republican Party is falling apart because of the success of re-electing Obama. Obama was re-elected due to the success of the Democrat Party appealing to the low information voters, appealing to illegal immigrants, appealing to organized labor, appealing to class envy unproductive people, and appealing to entitlement seeking dregs. Yes, we do have an upward battle on our hands to get the message out.

The Republican Party is rightfully in conflict due to the challenge of getting out the message of self-reliance, moral responsibility, and fiscal conservatism. Half the country is in agreement with us and the other half (51% of the popular vote) is in favor of following the Democrat Party down the road to ruin. By trying to hold on to power, the Democrat Party will sell its soul to the devil. I must admit that the propaganda arm of the Democrat Party is second to none in keeping its faithful dumbed down and hungry for more food stamps, extended unemployment benefits, no taxes, immigrant amnesty, and entitlements.

Angry old white men? Not really. Just another cute angle of propaganda from the left. Can’t adapt to changing times? Not really. Just a new way of conquering and dividing through propaganda. Partisan obstructionism? Not really. Bipartisan compromise does not work in a sea of lunatic ideas promoted by this party in power. We’re not buying what you liberals are selling.

Our conservative values are time-tested and are classic in their core righteousness. Your values are constantly changing and corrupt in its core foundation. We don’t compromise our values. You whore your cause for power. RHINOS must be weeded out and TEA Party ideas must now be the medicine needed to spread the message of common sense.

Sorry liberals, but your way of life is limited to short interludes of political success and defeated by the pain in which you inflict on your societal management. Any wonder why communism and socialism has such a hard time being a viable alternative to our way of life? Your way of life won’t last much longer.

Paul,

I have a problem with any corporation not complying with tax law. I also have a problem with any corporation, in which I’m invested, paying more in taxes than required by the tax code.

If you have a problem with Facebook, take it up with O’bozo.

What we have here is FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE. Both parties only goal is power, and to do this they would destroy the country. Both sides will not compromise in the least. The biggest problem is that both sides use there prior leaders to push there causes. Neither Reagan or Clinton could accomplish anything with this group of narrow minded clowns.

A couple of things you need to re-examine…..

1)Obama was re-elected due to the success of the Republican Party appealing to the low information voters, creating animus to illegal immigrants that helped business to expand, being hostile to organized labor, creating class envy, widening income disparity, and appealing to those whose policies are antithetical to a more diverse American populace.

2) Angry old white men? Definitely! Note the the GOP got 63% of the white vote….and LOST the Presidential election?

3) “We don’t compromise our values”….If you mean that conservatism is based in time-honed values..like slavery, racism, enabling the wealthy at the expense of the poor…..you’re right!!

As I said before…..maybe you need to review your policies!! I remember when the GOP were the PROGRESSIVES…and they didn’t do too badly for the nation……

Last week’s Barrons had a feature article on the U.S. debt crisis. The CBO projects U.S. debt to reach $20 TRILLION by 2023. If we raise taxes on the top 1% (on top of the increase implemented 60 days ago) to 50%, we would generate an additional $500 B over 10 years. If we roll back the Bush tax cuts for everyone- essentially giving every U.S. cititzen a 25% tax increase, it would generate another $750 B over ten years. So, $1.25 Trillion over ten years to offset $20 T. Our entitlement system as we know it, will become insolvent unless we raise taxes and massively cut Government spending. Obama’s solution to this problem is to create a wind powered time machine to prevent baby boomers from entering into the entitlement system. The Democrats have no ideas or viable solutions to the issues facing the country other than to assign blame to the GOP. Thus , while this blog gloats over internal debate in the GOP, Obama is systematically sacrificing the future of our children by ignoring the debt crisis. Obama has already hit the bully pulpit on the sequester cuts. Pretty incompetent management when you can’t squeeze 5% savings out of a $3.6 TRILLION annual Government budget. So on March 27th when the Big Brother Obama spin machine blames the GOP for the crisis, remember the $20 TRILLION debt train coming down the track- all Obama is doing is blaming other people and staring into the headlights of the oncoming debt express.

Obama got his tax increase on those evil rich and spent every penny of it. Just more spending and just more debt.

“But I realize that whilst teaching a man to fish he still has to eat…..

Perhaps you should look at the program that REPLACED welfare a few years back…
TANF has work requirements.

It’s important Lance, to do your homework.”

So what you’re telling me is that there is a bill to help people and have work requirements. I stated teaching or training to gain a skill. Work requirements does not equal job training. It is important to read what I wrote. This is an example of how crappy it is to discuss politics on this board. I offered a simple centrist way of bridging liberal and conservative views on welfare. I bet I am a Con, or a republiKKKant, or I am so dumb I only watch FAUX news in your eyes.So I can’t possibly have a nuanced view on how to improve the welfare program of the United States.

Lighten up Lance. You’ll hurt youself.

I was hoping the info would prompt you to remember the recent dust up about
removing certain work requirements to allow for other training or educational
oportunities that was a hot button with conservatives.

Again, it is important to do your homework.

A brief look at trends, with data from Pew Research.

1. In 2007, 15% of Americans identified themselves as non-Christians. In 2012 that had increased to 20% and is expected to be 25% by 2017. The newly minted non-Christians are primarily young adults. Most say they are either 1) spiritual but not religious or 2) have a belief system that is a mix of religions, i.e. a bit of Christianity, a dash of Hindu, a smidgeon of Buddhism.

2. In 1980 51% of Americans said they believe the Bible to be word-for-word true. In 2010 that had dropped to 35% and that trend is expected to continue. In 8 years time fewer than 30% of Americans will believe in the inerrancy of the Bible. Again the movement is being led by young adults; as older Southern Baptists and Pentecostals die there simply enough young with the same beliefs to fill their shoes.

These trends spell big trouble for the Republican Party. The GOP is rooted in superstition and lore that America is rapidly moving away from. And that is why, if the party is to survive, it has to dump the religious agenda right out the door and get back to being the party of fiscal conservatism, the party based on the principles set forth by Barry Goldwater. Yes, the would be the same Barry Goldwater who has a Planned Parenthood award named in his honor out in Arizona.

kayaker @ 9:38

Politics at the Presidential level and House elections are as different as any election can be. The media played a huge part in getting Bozo elected in November.

Give the GOP just as much credit for getting Obama elected as well. If the party were not so damned focused on being the “one true conservative”, there are many in the middle who would vote for a SANE Republican candidate. As long as the party faithful keep nominating jackasses, the GOP will get their ass handed to them on the national level.

The reason Obama’s beaten the GOP twice is because he’s been able to capture the middle. The far right don’t like Obama, and the far left don’t like him. As the old saying goes, “When you’re catching sh*t from both sides, that usually means you’re right on target.” Obama may not be right on target, but he’s much better than what the GOP has offered on the national level.

Smaller turnout in state elections gives the ideologues false confidence in thinking people agree with that far right bullsh*t, when most of us don’t. If Democrats effectively capture the middle in those 30 states under GOP leadership, the GOP will get their ass handed to them on the state level as well.

All politics are cyclical, and no majority or run lasts forever.

You still didn’t refute my point. Add up the number of votes cast for president and compare that to the number of votes cast in state campaigns. More people vote for federal office than state office. The GOP message does not poll well on the national level.
