News flash! Newt opposes billionaires buying elections!

Writing in Human Events, Newt Gingrich condemns a plan by Karl Rove to raise a lot of money from billionaires and intervene in GOP primaries on behalf of more mainstream, supposedly more electable candidates:

“I am unalterably opposed to a bunch of billionaires financing a boss to pick candidates in 50 states. This is the opposite of the Republican tradition of freedom and grassroots small-town conservatism.

No one person is smart enough nor do they have the moral right to buy nominations across the country.

That is the system of Tammany Hall and the Chicago machine. It should be repugnant to every conservative and every Republican.”

Newt, have you met this man?

SHeldon-Adelson

His name is Sheldon Adelson. I would have thought that you two knew each other, but apparently not. (Look again … is it the sunglasses throwing you off?)

However, as a man who is “unalterably opposed” to the notion of billionaires buying elections, you should know that Adelson — a casino owner with an estimated net worth of more than $20 billion — gave you and your associated SuperPACS some $30 million in an effort to buy you, Newt Gingrich, the 2012 GOP nomination.

And after you imploded — who saw that one coming, right? — Adelson reportedly went on to give an additional $100 million to other SuperPACs, including up to $40 million to those run by Rove.

Knowing how you feel about such things, I’m sure you’re deeply embarrassed that you let such a thing happen. Say hi to Callista!

Your friend,

– Jay Bookman

Well, anyone with the money to do it will buy elections. Even those elected buy elections by favoring those who support them. As example, Obama buys Mexicans, gays, dependents, unions, academics, simply by supporting them. So one hand washes the other.

Let’s not discuss the idiocy of people who actually bought that “promise” NO ONE can promise “transparency” in government until they are actually in a position to do so AND have come to realize that it’s not always possible.

I understood that from the get-go. Why didn’t you?

If you’ve got proof of quid pro quo…why haven’t you let the Justice Department know? Buying votes is illegal. If you don’t report it, YOU are just as guilty.

But you don’t want that so why complain about billionaires (on BOTH sides) influencing elections? Geez Jay, you gotta let this thing against Newt go. It’s sure to be causing you grief, even subconsciously.

And, there is a big difference between backing with money a specific candidate, versus giving money to pick multiple candidates.

Rove points out his PAC is not against Tea Party candidates and did, in fact, give many dollars, if not millions, to some Tea Party backed candidates. His whole objective, according to him, are to prevent primary winners of the caliber you love to write about.

“And, there is a big difference between backing with money a specific candidate, versus giving money to pick multiple candidates.”

That did not come out exactly as I intended.

The tradional way is to give money to the candidates you back, not give money to a PAC who will try to control the primary winners. That may be 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Nonetheless, it is not traditional.

Jay picks up on dinky stories he can find that are perceived as negative towards republicans but disregards the larger stories in the news such as the one cited by other posters here about the poll worker voting six times for Obama and seeing nothing wrong with it. Jay, who consistently has charged that there is no widespread voter fraud, will overlook these stories, to be sure. And I won’t hold my breath to see if he comments on the democrat in Colorado who thinks women with guns who are afraid of being raped will lose their cool and shoot the place up. Citing that story wouldn’t fit Jay’s template that it’s republicans who are waging a war against women. Here’s the link:

A shotgun is the weapon of choice for home defense. When you’re surrounded by woods and have no nearby neighbors as Joe explained, you CAN fire off a few rounds without fear of hurting an innocent neighbor. Problem with Biden’s BS is, what makes him think during a home invasion his wife, or even him and his wife, could make it out to the deck before the intruders get them? Secret service aside, of course.

OK, I honestly did a little work, but must respond to Granny and Brosephus.

First, I have a regular shotgun, like for bird hunting, a tactical shotgun for home defense, a 9MM pistol, and a S&W 15 MP which is the dreaded assault rifle. A big concern in home defense is missing the target, thus the short barrel shotgun.

Problem with Biden’s BS is, what makes him think during a home invasion his wife, or even him and his wife, could make it out to the deck before the intruders get them? Secret service aside, of course.

He can’t. His remarks are ridiculous like too many things he states.

A comment on Obama becoming a millionaire.

It is very apparent he enjoys being one while hell bent to prevent others from becoming one.

When he talks taxing the rich folks, he really means taxing people with high income. High income does not always mean rich.

There are two kinds of rich people: those with millions of assests, you know the ones taxed at 15% of which he has done nothing, and those who have high income who are dependent on that income to be rich – if their income goes down they are not rich anymore; they don’t have the millions in assests.

Obama is taxing more the people who are not truly millionaires. The bluecollars who have worked their way to high income. His Wall Street and Hollywood friends have not been touched as to paying more taxes.

People of means can and do install perimeter alarms. If they’re living in the countryside, I’m willing to bet they have the best security system to cover their entire property and not just the home. There are instances where one can hear an attempted break in and respond before the person makes it completely inside the home. I’m sure you remember the old advice about dragging the body across the threshold before the police arrive, right?

Either way, you come through just as I would expect you to. Some of y’all act so afraid or angry at the left that I imagine y’all walking around with two right shoes on simply to avoid anything left. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if y’all were afraid to make left turns while driving.

True millionaires have assests that produce capital gains. That’s money paid to them for their investment. They are taxed at 15%. Obama has done nothing to address this group on paying more taxes. His Wall Street and Hollywood buddies are in this group.

Income dependent rich do not have large investments that produce capital gains payments to them. Instead, they have high income, perhaps putting them in the 1%. If their income goes down, they unlike the capital gains rich, move from rich to middle class or lower. Obama just raised their tax rates to almost 40%.

Now, if you can’t understand that, enroll in economics 99 or whatever they call it now.

td, you proved my point. Thanks. Don’t forget the new Fox conspiracy:

Fox News warned on Wednesday that Al Jazeera is set to “infiltrate” the United States amid dire warnings about “sleeper cells” in the Muslim suburbs of Detroit.

Host Megan Kelly began a segment about Al Jazeera’s expansion into the American television market by raising questions about the network’s “real anti-American bias.” Contributor Lisa Daftari agreed, veering into blatant Islamophobic fear-mongering in the process:

DAFTARI: The point is they want to differentiate themselves from their sister network, but at the same time, it’s the same thing. They’re having the same type of coverage. They’re apparently expanding to eight cities, including Detroit, Michigan. Detroit, Michigan is a large ex-pat community of Muslim-Americans and sleeper cells have been detected. You can Google this, you can find out all this information. So if you’re trying to set yourself apart the Qatari petro-dollars are backing this, you’re still developing in this area where the sleeper cells have been detected. They’re going to have do do much more to prove to me that they’re different from their sister network.

My friend who was there that night said that she beat them to the door, and she was armed with a shotgun. They had to talk her down and allow them to do the job they were hired to do.

I doubt that the Secret Service would let Dr. Biden deal with any alarms, but one has to remember that she’s only had that protection for around 5 years now. There is nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her kids.

In a related report, the council spent quite a bit of time to be ensured minority contractors would get the new stadium work. When will that sorta thinking stop? The lowest price for the best work should get the bid, regardless of skin color.

No, generally when someone wants to deflect from the topic at hand, they generally have an idea of the problem AND a possible solution. I asked you that question to see if you were serious about discussing the voting issue or if you were simply flinging feces just for sh*ts and giggles. Based on your response, it appears that you’re almost out of sh*ts and giggles.

Obviously, you are very new around here. I have consistently provided proof for actual voter fraud whenever the discussion has came up. You may want to calm down a bit as one of my areas of interest is voter laws and how they affect people. I’ve probably done more research in this area than you have, but if you want to get beyond fingerpointing and sh*t throwing, I’m more than willing to have an intellectual discussion with you.

Once again I’ll ask, how can this particular case of voter fraud been stopped by the ID laws being pushed? Seems as the conservative/right/GOP logic dictates that Voter ID laws stop fraud. If you’re concerned about fraud, how do you stop something like this from being done by an insider?

As to voter fraud, here’s a site for you to read up on and enlighten yourself. I’ve provided this link here more times than I can count and/or remember.

Scrivener, it appears as though every extra vote that Ohio woman cast was through absentee balloting. So explain again how voter ID would help?

And this is the reason absentee ballots should be only for people that can prove they can not make it to the polls to vote. While we are discussing fraud. The states that have these same day registration and voting without photo id is nothing more then allowing fraud at a level that can not be proven.

BTW: If you have no voter id then I could find out that my neighbors are not registered and then register for them, show up at a poll and claim to be them and then vote under their name. How do you stop this?

For the record, I own a condo in PCB and was sent an absentee ballot there and then voted in Georgia. I could have voted twice and no one would have never known the difference.

Did you feel the need to bring up an AR-15 for what dramatic effect.

I’m not an expert on ballistics have seen first hand what shot pellets can do to a car.

No, there is no need for dramatic effect. I was simply pointing out the differences in ballistics. A shotgun blast has different ballistic characteristics from a rifle blast and even a handgun blast.

Shotguns are good for close proximity shooting. You don’t generally use shotgun for distance shooting as they lose their effectiveness over distance. Your idea of damaging a neighbor’s car is less likely to happen with a shotgun as opposed to a handgun or rifle simply because of the ballistics involved. As the Biden’s have a somewhat secluded homestead (going off of Biden’s comments), a shotgun blast in the air has little to no chance of damaging neighbors cars. A handgun or rife would likely be a different story as the round would travel much farther at a higher velocity.

As I said earlier, I would rather my neighbors shoot a shotgun as opposed to anything else. Our houses are less than 100ft apart, and the ballistic characteristics of a shotgun makes me feel safe that they’re not going to shoot through my home enough to hit anybody in the house. A handgun or rifle round would be entirely different. The only exception would be a slug round in a shotgun, but most people who shoot shotguns would rarely load it with slugs.

My view is that, states should do their friggin’ job and deal with this stuff on their own. In the rush to eliminate fraud, the “incentives” you suggest should have been just as much a part of the legislation as requiring an ID to cast a vote. That’s called comprehensive reform. You’re right, Scrivener. Absolutely right. “This is just one example.” To validate conservative claims of some widespread effort to subvert the democratic process that would justify an equally widespread effort to shut it down, you’d need many more examples. But as you say, it is patently obvious that it is just one example.

Furthermore, as you apparently concede, this was done through absentee balloting. I have said all along that what voter fraud that does exist happens mainly through the absentee system, and so would not be affected by voter ID laws. Here in Georgia for example, absentee balloting accounts for almost all cases of voter fraud.

Yet for some reason, the same Georgia bill that required voter ID in this state actually weakened protections in the law regarding absentee balloting. Why? Because at the time at least, GOP voters tended to use absentee balloting more often, so that was made easier, while Democratic voters cast ballots in person, so that was made more difficult.

FL does NOT automatically send absentee ballots.

I stand corrected and you are right about the law. Now explain how I received one in my FL mailbox with my name on it?

Absentee Ballot Requested/Returned by Designee

Per Chapter 12, Section 12-14 of the Miami Dade County Code, an absentee ballot may be requested and returned by a voter’s designee for any election. When requesting a ballot by designee, there is a limit of two ballots per election, only one of which may be for a voter who is not the spouse, parent, child, grandparent or sibling of the designee.

An absentee ballot may only be requested/returned on the day prior to and the day of the election if the person designated by the voter is an immediate family member and only on the day of the election if the designee is not an immediate family member. To request/return an absentee ballot the following options are available:

The designee and voter complete an affidavit, available on the link below. Picture identification of the designee must be presented along with the completed affidavit when requesting or returning the absentee ballot.
The designee completes the affidavit and the voter provides a written request containing specific information found on our Absentee Ballot Request/Return Policies, available on the link below. Picture identification, affidavit and voter’s written request must be presented when requesting or returning the absentee ballot.

It’s voter ID. Obviously ID won’t solve the absentee voter problem, but it sure will solve most of the fraud that goes on on election day.

Again — how much are you willing to spend – on a per head basis – to produce and distribute an ID that can be used for not only voting purposes, but to address the issue of illegal immigration?

Florida law allows all qualified voters to request an absentee ballot from the Supervisor of Elections. A member of the voter’s immediate family or legal guardian may also request an absentee ballot for a voter, if directly instructed to do so by the voter. The request can cover all elections through the end of the calendar year for the second ensuing regularly scheduled general election. A request for an absentee ballot to be mailed must be made no later than 5 p.m. on the 6th day before an election. Contact your Supervisor of Elections to request an absentee ballot. Refer to the Division of Elections’ webpage on Absentee Voting for more details.

Absentee voting refers to voting on a ballot received by mail or picked up by or for a person who is unable or cannot go to the polls to vote during early voting or Election Day. A person does not have to be absent from his or her county of residence or have another reason to vote absentee. A request MUST (emphasis mine) be made to receive an absentee ballot. A request covers all elections through the end of the calendar year for the second ensuing regularly scheduled general election. Contact your Supervisor of Elections to request an absentee ballot.

It is time to call Scrivener’s claim that “there is a ton of voter fraud” exactly what it is: a cooked, smoked sausage made of cured beef, cured pork or a mixture of the two.

A favorite GOP dog whistle and nothing more.

And, OF COURSE, any fraud is unacceptable. Any tampering of our elections should be punished heavily.

But large-scale voter fraud is virtually non-existent today.

One of the best studies on the subject was conducted by Justin Levitt of the New York University Law School. Its conclusion is simple: allegations of widespread voter fraud are greatly exaggerated.

“Many of the claims of voter fraud amount to a great deal of smoke without much fire…Most allegations of fraud turn out to be baseless—and that of the few allegations remaining, most reveal election irregularities and other forms of election misconduct, rather than fraud by individual voters. The type of individual voter fraud supposedly targeted by recent legislative efforts—especially efforts to require certain forms of voter ID—simply does not exist.”

http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnwasik/2012/11/06/voter-fraud-a-massive-anti-democratic-deception/

Scrivener’s baseless claim, devoid of any compelling evidence, is false.

Yes, you actually did make it up, Brocephus. I never said I had all the answers. I do have an idea of the problem. It’s voter fraud. I do have an idea of a partial solution. It’s voter ID. Obviously ID won’t solve the absentee voter problem, but it sure will solve most of the fraud that goes on on election day.

Well, given that the fraud in Ohio happened by way of absentee ballot, your partial solution does not address the issue you brought up. Maybe you should research things a bit more before shooting off at the hip. It will make you seem a bit more informed and less a feces flinger. Those who seem informed get informed dialogue. Snark is fed to those who fling fecal matter.

Just a bit of advice for you.

As to ID laws, if someone registers a bogus name and presents an ID in that name, how does the ID law stop fraud? You’ve been sold a lemon in the idea that ID’s are even going to solve 10% of the fraud. Check the link I posted earlier. The extensive research done on voter fraud showed that ID laws would have stopped fraud in 1 out of 15 million votes cast. 10 cases of in person fraud were found out of 146 million votes cast. THere were significantly many more cases of absentee and registration fraud, neither of which are addressed by ID laws.

Marty: So you are going on record as one who feels it is a good policy to fire a firearm into the air?

I’m sure you understand the difference between a general statement vs a specific one, right? You keep talking about firearm in general, while I am talking about shotgun, in specific. The two are not interchangable.

Unless Delaware doesn’t have a “Castle Doctrine” or “Stand your ground” law in effect, shooting in the air could get you into trouble. If either of those laws exist in Delaware, how can one prove she shot into the air and not at the intruder without eyewitness testimony?

So, if you’re looking for a statement from me, I have no problem with Jill Biden shooting a shotgun in the air if it’s going to scare off an intruder. Personally, I would hate to see her have to deal with the emotional baggage of killing a person. If shooting in the air is going to get her killed, I’d tell her to point the shotgun at the center of mass and pull the trigger. As I stated earlier, Dr. Biden’s situation does not fit everyone else’s. As I recall, Biden said that was the advice he gave to his wife.

Is that good enough for you, or do I need to draw a chart or picture?

Birdshot doesn’t fall at the same velocity as a lead round. I’ve had birdshot rain down on me before. While it doesn’t hurt, it’s scary as hell to realize how close to an active shotgun you are.

Common occurrence on the dove field. The individual shotgun pellets have low mass so the friction of the air slows them considerable over a short distance. And because they have low mass, they do very little damage.

So as much as I hate to admit it, Clueless Joe stumbled into the truth. If you want to scare someone away, a couple of shotgun blasts into the air is perfectly safe and isn’t going to hurt anyone. But be sure to use steel shot so that you don’t ruin the environment and make kids any dumber.

You obviously have not taken part in too many gun safety classes or self defense with firearms classes.

If you think that firing a shotgun into the air (say above a 45^ angle) is going to hurt anyone, then you obviously have no practical experience with firearms or physics.

” Both evidence in the record and facts of which we may take judicial notice, however, indicate that a somewhat heavier burden may be placed on a limited number of persons. They include elderly persons born out-of-state, who may have difficulty obtaining a birth certificate; persons who because of economic or other personal limitations may find it difficult either to secure a copy of their birth certificate or to assemble the other required documentation to obtain a state-issued identification; homeless persons; and persons with a religious objection to being photographed. If we assume, as the evidence suggests, that some members of these classes were registered voters when SEA 483 was enacted, the new identification requirement may have imposed a special burden on their right to vote.

The severity of that burden is, of course, mitigated by the fact that, if eligible, voters without photo identification may cast provisional ballots that will ultimately be counted. To do so, however, they must travel to the circuit court clerk’s office within 10 days to execute the required affidavit. It is unlikely that such a requirement would pose a constitutional problem unless it is wholly unjustified. And even assuming that the burden may not be justified as to a few voters, that conclusion is by no means sufficient to establish petitioners’ right to the relief they seek in this litigation.

+++

Petitioners ask this Court, in effect, to perform a unique balancing analysis that looks specifically at a small number of voters who may experience a special burden under the statute and weighs their burdens against the State’s broad interests in protecting election integrity….But on the basis of the evidence in the record it is not possible to quantify either the magnitude of the burden on this narrow class of voters or the portion of the burden imposed on them that is fully justified.

+++

Finally we note that petitioners have not demonstrated that the proper remedy—even assuming an unjustified burden on some voters—would be to invalidate the entire statute. When evaluating a neutral, nondiscriminatory regulation of voting procedure, we must keep in mind that a ruling of unconstitutionality frustrates the intent of the elected representatives of the people.”

Of far more worthy topics is what appears to be the inevitable sequester that Obama first proposed and signed into law. Now the narcissistic campaigner-n-chief whose convinced that the greater majority of Americans savor his every word thinks he can scare Americans into believing that Republicans by not bowing to his wishes will throw this country into complete chaos Friday of next week. The paltry 2.4% across the board spending cuts in a 3.6 trillion dollar federal government spending appetite would be nothing if it wasn’t for congress disallowing transfer authority for the administration. All the Republicans need to do is propose a bill that gives Obama the ability to prioritize and transfer funds across the thousands of accounts in the DOD and non-DOD accounts. In other words force this pathetic president to actually be a president and govern. Will Obama request that authority from congress, probably not and will Republicans in congress propose it, probably not. If either had the courage to propose it sequestration would be a benefit instead of a pending curse.

If you got hit with a shotgun blast at short range

Soothsayer, technically you’re correct, however, keep in mind that most self defense encounters occur within about 25 yards. At that range a 12 gauge with say 2 3/4 inch 00 buck will only shoot a pattern about the size of a half dollar. It won’t fully expand a pattern to approximately the size of a pizza pan until about 45 yards. That means in a confrontation at close range you still will need to aim. Of course at point blank range it would obviously be no brainer literaly speaking. Joe Biden on the advantage of a double barreled scatter gun really displayed his ignorance. That said a shotgun pump action with an extended magazine is ideal for in home protection but you better understand its limitation and more importantly, your own.

Warning shots are indeed effective and will discourage an intruder. The problem is you must live out in the country because living in a subdivision you wouldn’t want to put rounds or shotgun pellets through your neighbors walls. Also you’re probably not going to have much time if there’s an invasion of your home, so your armed defense won’t allow for tactical response beyond applying deadly force as quickly and as accurately as the circumstance coupled with your own ability allows.

Has she fired the shotgun enough times to be prepared for the kick.

Most importantly why would you want to give away your location unless one is looking for a confrontation.

Why is planned parenthood getting money from us when they are doing this:

A Planned Parenthood doctor forced a woman to undergo an abortion without anesthesia and then botched the procedure leaving her to seek treatment at a nearby hospital, according to a lawsuit filed in a Colorado court. An emergency room doctor later discovered parts of the baby’s body had been left inside the woman’s womb

Marty

One last thing…

I am trained to stop the threat. The easiest target to hit is center mass because it’s the largest part of the body. When the sh*t hits the fan, you generally lose fine motor skills, so the thought of the average person taking that one shot to end everything is not likely going to happen. Instead, you’ll have the 12 shots fired, and the person gets grazed once.

My training is to avoid that scenario and keep my composure so that I can end things as quickly as possible with as few casualties as possible. I’ve been sent out on assignment before just because of my marksmanship. However, if it helps you to sleep at night, I couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn if I were shooting laser guided munitions with someone painting the target for me.

Capitalism has been perverted and the democracy damaged, just as one of our most brilliant presidents warned.

“a vast accession of strength from their younger recruits, who, having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of ‘76, now look to a single and splendid government of an aristocracy, founded on banking institutions, and monied incorporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures, commerce and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry.” ~Thomas Jefferson from an 1825 letter to William Branch Giles

Plundered and beggarly, indeed President Jefferson.

The monied interests used to be our servants, now they are our masters, exactly as you predicted. Even the more honest Republicans of today can no longer deny this. Labor unions have been crushed. Uncle Sam has been disempowered from regulating (well regulated militia, my ___!), investigating and prosecuting white collar and environmental criminals. Giant multinationals have lobbyists that write much of our legislation. There is a revolving door between the agency big wigs in DC and the monied interests that they are supposed to be monitoring and making adhere to our laws. Nader is right – Washington is corporate owned territory.

The future of the republic is in the balance. And the question is do we the people even have the power anymore to wrest our sovereignty back? The worldwide Occupy protests gave us the first glimmer of hope in a long while that the answer is yes…

He will also likely tell you that no two situations are exactly alike. If that intruder has a crowbar and you rack a shotgun, chances are that he’s hauling ass. That’s not even firing a shot. There is something about a pump action shotgun that affects people differently than any other weapon does.

I’m guessing the experts also advise you on how to deal with the emotional issues that come from actually pointing a gun at a person, pulling the trigger, and witnessing what that round does to their body.

You made it clear you were ok with using the same methods the military uses as a means for home defense.

Has the military not used preemptive strikes before?

Or are you just going to pick and choose what military actions you want and disregard the rest?

No words in your mouth just an explanation.

But maybe we are getting back on topic with hypocrisy and only when something supports you is it good.
Didn’t know you had so much in common with Newt.

I could say and bring up many other non deadly means to use in the situation.

But the scenario given by the VP and the one in discussion made no mention of salt rounds.

She had never fired a weapon before but with about 30 minutes of my fast track training she was tearing the kill zones out of the targets at 15, 20 and 25 yards. It wasn’t my instruction it was a natural targeting ability many women possess for some unexplained reason. When we came home from the range she had no interest in learning how to clean the weapon and has since shown no interest in returning to the range. Hopefully, if there’s ever a need she’ll know what to do instinctively because it wouldn’t be through training and dedicated practice. I have the gun locked up but I’ve shown her how to get it.

First of all I imply and you infer. Got it? That’s the first correction.

Secondly I did not imply that people who think that global warming is occurring are kooks- I believe I said the Bookman kooks which would denote that I am speaking specifically of SOME of the kooks on his blog.

I myself happen to believe that the earth is in a slight warming trend. Where I and other rational people and many scientists disagree with the chicken little crowd is if and how much of the warming trend is directly attributable to man made activities.

“And correct me again if I am wrong, but did you not intend to indicate that global warming could not be true due to the fact that it is snowing on a mountain, in southern AZ, in February as proof?”

Um. No. Frankly I’m a little disappointed in you that you can’t pick up on the satire of the point- which is that its foolish to use one day weather events to point out a case for long term weather patterns. I used this in a mocking point of all the Kook claims that we’ve seen on here as evidence of global warming every time there is a one day weather event that they think proves global warming. My apologies. I forgot to use my patented kd (kook disclaimer) to point out satire to the liberals who usually don’t get it. And sure enough you didn’t get it.

“I am pretty sure I never said that.”

You didn’t. Its just the impression that I get which is why I stated “it seems”

“I linked to an article that talks to some of the effects of global warming”

I get that. I’ve seen plenty of credible articles from both points of view regarding global warming and I’m more interested in the science as opposed to opinion. I’ll give you a good example. The hurricane that hit NJ and NY. I’ve seen a lot of nonsense from the left saying that this sort of “weirdness” in the weather of hurricanes hitting NY and NJ is proof of global warming wreaking all kinds of havoc. Then I saw a meterologist speak on it who predicted we would see several storms over the next 4-5 years that would roll up the northeastern corridor. The culprit was an ocean occilation of some sort and the same thing happened in the late 50s where several storms ran up the northeastern coast.

And as I said I believe we are in a slight warming trend. Why has not been ephatically proven and if its due to manmade activities we do not know exactly how much of it is due to our activities. That is the part that we don’t know for sure which several of the libs on here seem to think that we know with certainty. In other words their bald opinion.

“Reaganomics/trickle down killed middle and lower class wages in this country (you can look it up!) but the Chamber of Commerce and the giant multinationals that have no loyalty this country (other than as an ATM) are doing great! Staggering record profits thank you very much!! ”

You can believe that if you it makes you feel better but that does not mean it is true. Global competition and the break up of the family are the real factors of middle class wages being stagnate for the past 30 or so years. The single parent family is the cause of a great deal of our problems in this nation (there are exceptions). It is a problem that neither political party wants to address and until it is addressed and solved our underlying economic problems, education problems and criminal problems will not be resolved.

Yes. But that’s also quite misleading seeing as how we were the world’s lone industrial power with Europe, Japan, and China’s industrial heartland of Manchuria all laid to waste. By the early 60s they were starting to catch up and it was so obvious the drag effect that the high taxes were having that a Democrat slashed those high tax rates to keep us competitive.

And if anyone thinks high capital gains taxes bring in high govt revenues on a consistent basis then all you have to do is look at the empirical evidence. Go back and look at the IRS tax tables from the 1920s through today and you will generally find that the lower the cap gains tax rate the higher govt revenues as a % of the economy. The ideal rate from what I’ve seen is around 20% max.

Once again, it does not matter what households make. What matters is what individuals make.

“As a snapshot of a nation recovering from one of its worst recessions ever, the census report had both shadows and highlights. Median household income declined $777, to $50,054 before taxes.”

But the middle-income tier—defined in this Pew Research analysis as all adults whose annual household income is two-thirds to double the national median1—is the only one that also shrunk in size, a trend that has continued over the past four decades.

Re Newt, I have to wonder why anyone, Dem or Rep takes the old coot seriously – he is still on the Sunday shows. Why? Tho, as a watcher of many of those Sunday shows, I must admit that he occasionally makes a modicum of sense – accent on occasionally & modicum. That said, does he have any real influence with anyone in the GOP? Hmmm, well he is speaking along with Ms Palin & Allen West at some repub conclave soon. SIGH!

By health insurance was provided for workers and their families…..

Are you using provide as in fully paid for it?

What was the percentage of those with work related insurance of the 1950s an what is the percentage who receive insurance through their employer today?

“The most familiar aspect of employment-based insurance’s past is its rapid growth in the first three decades after World War II, the relative stability that followed for about a decade, and the decline in coverage since the late 1980s. The exemption of employer payments for health insurance from employees’ taxable income, combined with substantial efficiency advantages of group over individual insurance, fueled rapid expansion. By the mid-1950s, 45 percent of the population had hospital insurance; coverage soared to 77 percent by 1963.1 Also, by 1963 more than half of the population had coverage for regular medical expenses, and almost one-fourth had major medical insurance.2
Employment-based coverage reached its peak sometime in the 1980s and has been declining since then. According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), coverage of workers ages 18–64 fell 2.8 percentage points between 1987 and 1999.3 Another EBRI series shows a decline of 3.5 percentage points from 1999 to 2004.4 Linking the two series indicates a decline of 6.3 percentage points from 1987 to 2004. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, derived from establishment surveys, show a decline for full-time workers in the private sector of fifteen percentage points from 1989–90 to 2003.5 Regardless of data source, it appears that the best days of employment-based insurance are in the past.”

Actually Marty
You are correct.
The impact on the budget due to Medicare/Medicaid has been enormous (and it is getting worse).

The only way out is to either cut benefits or reign in the cost of health care.

Cutting benefits means fewer people getting proper medical care.
Reigning in costs means nationalization of health care.

Neither are very palatable choices.

Take your pick.

So Obama has helped Wall Street. Is that what you are saying?

Hello? is this thing on? Can anybody read this?

He prosecuted ZERO banksters, preferring instead “to look forward”.

Perhaps a President Warren would have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to them. Apparently none of the men in Washington do…

Jefferson was, as well, a relentless critic of the monopolizing of economic power by banks, corporations and those who put their faith in what the third president referred to as “the selfish spirit of commerce (that) knows no country, and feels no passion or principle but that of gain.

Jefferson might not have wanted a lot of government, but he wanted enough government to assert the sovereignty of citizens over corporations. To his view, nothing was more important to the health of the republic.

In the early years of the 19th century, as banks and corporations began to flex their political muscles, he announced that: “I hope we shall crush… in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”

No I thought of that old timer.

Your theory would hold more weight if the rate of growth in mandatory spending mimicked that of the rise in CEO pay.

Unfortunately for your argument it does not.

The rise in spending began to occur before the massive distinction of CEO pay to worker pay.

But project away claiming others compartmentalize while you hurl around your unproven theories.

Spending took sharp increases during the 70s and early 80s.

While in the 90s when CEO pay began to really explode there was actually a reduction in the % of GDP spent specifically on income security and other retirement and disability payments.

This is CEO pay and it’s timeline
http://thesocietypages.org/graphicsociology/2009/05/29/ceo-compensation-1970-2000/

This is spending and its timeline

The idea of capitalism is to let the private sector take all the risk and the government umpires to make sure that the monopolies do not eat the young. If the government gets involved with the private sector they become part of the systemic disease and will die too. The only thing that saved the country in the great depression was the government had enough gunpowder. Let the too big fail, I think you will be shocked how well this country recovers in an open economy. In doing so you create new opportunity for new business, that is blocked from the sunlight by these dinosaurs and you collect corporate taxes unlobbied against in Congress. Business should have a term limit to the usefulness of that business not to a politician. You got billionaires writing checks, it like old men supporting young women, something ain’t right, and Newt is the poster child of ain’t right.

Firstly, if billionaires were buying the elections for Republicans, why are the Democrats in charge? So, that’s a canard right off the bat. Secondly, if rich people are automatically evil (creed of the child-minded Left), why isn’t Al Gore a villain for just making $100 million selling his Current TV? Also, if you want to talk about billionaires’ influencing our elections…what about the massive political machinery funded by George Soros? Fact is, the GOP has this problem…and we have to be honest about it. The voting public is now comprised of a lot of social parasites that believe it’s not what they can do for their country, but what they can get from the taxpayers. Likewise, the Democrats through generations of education and media cultural indoctrination—have convinced the mouth breathers on the bell-curve to vote on skin color and complaint group; splintering apart our society by fostering resentment against other Americans. Thusly, it can be said that “Division is Democrat Strength.” If you want a comfortable lifestyle without having to work, and you want to destroy your more successful neighbor; you’ll vote Democrat. And the Dems know that’s an old formula for power, appealing to mankinds baser instincts. The GOP is DOA because in order to be competitive, they have to drop principals and become as disgusting as hateful liberals are. OH, and one more thing: If you don’t understand why capital gains rate kept low keep the economy going—then you have the economic grasp of an adolescent. (Hint: the high capital gains taxes that people posting seem to want, discourages investment and pushes resources into non-active instruments as a hedge….VERY bad for an economy!)
