Black Keys, Preservation Hall and Dr. John blast us into the weekend

The boys from Akron, the Black Keys, had a great night at the Grammys last week, winning awards for best rock song and best rock performance for their single “Lonely Boy” and best rock album for ‘El Camino”.

They also provided what was clearly the best performance of the night, although it surely didn’t hurt that they were teamed up with the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band, with the great Dr. John on keyboards. Their performance of “Lonely Boy” tore the place up, waking up a show badly in need of a shot of adrenalin.

It’s a good way to send us into the weekend ….

Well, thanks, Kamchak. I saw the real painting Starry Night down at the High Museum a few years ago. I went with a nephew that was in colledge and had to go see it and write a report on it. The cops had took his drivers liscence so he asked me to take him. The colors of that thing are so much brighter than what shows on a computer screen or in a book.

Here’s another one of my favorites from Don Mclean. Not many know that he was the singing “young boy” that was wrote about in “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”

Another hit song associated with McLean (though never recorded by him) is “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, which was written about McLean after Lori Lieberman, also a singer/songwriter, saw him singing his composition “Empty Chairs” in concert.[14] Afterwards, Lieberman wrote a poem about the experience and shared it with Norman Gimbel, who had long been searching for a way to use a phrase he had copied from a novel badly translated from Spanish to English, “killing me softly with his blues”.[15] Gimbel and Charles Fox reworked the poem and the phrase into the song “Killing Me Softly with His Song”,[16] recorded by Roberta Flack (and later covered by The Fugees).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Olympic Arms is a staunch believer in and defender of the Constitution of the United States, and with special attention paid to the Bill of Rights that succinctly enumerates the security of our Divinely given Rights. One of those Rights is that to Keep and Bear Arms.

Legislation recently passed in the State of New York outlaws the AR15 and many other firearms, and will make it illegal for the good and free citizens of New York to own a large selection of legal and safe firearms and magazines. We feel as though the passage of this legislation exceeds the authority granted to the government of New York by its citizens, and violates the Constitution of the United States, ignoring such SCOTUS rulings as District of Columbia v. A 15-year-old burglary suspect in St. Louis is dead after being shot by the homeowner.

Demetrius Murphy was killed around 1:30 a.m. Friday in the back yard of a home near Gravois Park.

Police say Murphy and a 17-year-old were trying to burglarize the home. The 33-year-old male homeowner went outside to investigate and reportedly shot Murphy as Murphy approached him.

The homeowner’s name has not been released. Police say the shooting appears to be justified.

A state law known as the castle doctrine allows people who encounter an intruder in their homes or vehicles to use deadly force without fear of being charged or sued.

Even though it came at a terrible cost, in American lives and livelihoods, there is one fantastic consequence of the (W)orst administration in modern American history. (That’s right, worse even than Nixon.) And that is the current hemorrhaging condition of the GOP and their now completely disreputable and rejected faux conservatism and right wing extremism, bordering on fascism.

Thanks to the disastrous Mssrs Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Libby, Perle, Kristol, Krauthammer, Podhorertz, et al, neoconservatism is quickly headed to the trash heap of American history where it belongs.

And the chances of a Republican presidency are as dim as they were when Herbert Hoover left office…

Can’t disagree but Jimmy Carter wasn’t exactly a sweet peach. I would also say, having to deal with the greatest onshore tragedy in our history is certainly something no other president endured. No matter how we choose to deal with the error of sending troops anywhere. Of course people here will submit Al Gore or whomever would have done a better job but remember, even Bill Clinton was convinced in his term that Iraq was a problem..

I think after 911, Bush defaulted to the bottom of hierachy of needs…security. Every decision right or wrong brought down to that level.

The reason for al queda declaring war on us was because we had established a base of operations in saudi arabia by their invitation during bush 1 in first iraqi war. Bin laden was peeved that the united states was on holy soil and mad at the saudi king saying that they didn’t need the US against saddam because they (al queda) just defeated the soviets in afghanistan. Clinton screwed up by keeping that base going, it was like swatting a hornets nest. Cultural misunderstandings leads us to where we are today.

Say what you will, the Black Keys are brilliant. Unimaginative, totally contrived but incredible marketers/businessmen. They’ve never had an original idea. Time will tell but they might even surpass Garth Brooks in this category. My Morning Jacket did a tour last year with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Jay, did you know that amplified instruments are not allowed in Preservation Hall?). I will not discredit the the Keys’ work ethic and years they’ve spent getting to where they are, only their originality. They were so much better when they were ripping of Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford and R.L. Burnside and the James Gang (also from Akron)

Amazing riff (and sense of humor, Auerbach is Jewish, duh.)

Saw this recently:

“When it comes to various politicians and others speaking against gun ownership (the 2nd Amendment and Constitution by definition) politicians will many times cite city and state police chiefs who allegedly may support the anti-gun movement. These politicians may have police chiefs and their officers appear with them as props or spokesmen in news conferences.

So the logical question to ask is why are these top cops so seemingly against firearm ownership?

Chiefs are at the beck and call of their political bosses, mayors and city councils.

For our purpose here let’s just deal with city police, not state/national officials. If city politicians are against gun ownership (Chicago, Washington D.C, San Francisco, and New York for example) and the chief doesn’t agree he can (and probably will) be fired or demoted by the mayor or possibly by a simple majority of the City Council. In most towns over 50,000 population chiefs generally get paid between $70,000 and $140,000 a year plus benefits and retirement. Large city chiefs get well over $200,000 plus benefits, retirement and every once in a while you run into a chief earning well over $300,000.00 plus benefits. They want to hang onto that “chief”position, title and income.

This is why you see chiefs and their officers in the background when privileged officials posture against citizen firearm ownership and the Constitution by definition. Sure some chiefs may believe in citizen gun control and may be willing as a backdrop for self-serving politicians–especially if they were appointed by those in power at the time. So whenever a mayor, senator, representative or president wants a show of “top cops” showing support, a message is delivered to the particular city where the top officials are anti-2nd Amendment requesting top cops as props. The chiefs and officers are obediently delivered for props or advised to get their resume updated.

Sheriffs are by and large a different breed. They are elected by the people with a larger proportional number of citizens than city officials. The sheriff does not have to please a few city council members, a goofy mayor (or a governor). Sheriffs represent the beliefs and values of the majority of the area of his or her citizens who directly voted them into office. Yes, there will be sheriffs who do not want guns in the hands of citizens, but nothing like the number of police chiefs who have a near immediate career ending gun held to their heads by anti-Constitution politicians or the chief culture.

And most sheriffs take their Oath supporting the Constitution very seriously. And while they currently follow and enforce Constitutionally applicable federal, state and county laws they reserve the power invested in their oath and position as elected officers of their county to resist or not to enforce Constitutionally infringing law if or when that might come. If that were to occur, the state police and/or federal government may be ordered to step into that particular sheriff’s county to enforce those particular unconstitutional laws. The ramifications of those legal incursions might be very interesting to watch, especially, we were told, if that particular sheriff is actively supported by the citizens of that county.

The bottom line is: city, state and even federal chiefs will almost always bend to the will of their political masters – He who has the gold makes the rules.”

The debate over arming school personnel hasn’t touched on what to do if confronted by a 10-year-old student with murderous intent. That staggering possibility hit the citizens of the rural Washington town of Colville on Feb. 7, when two fifth-graders were arrested and confessed to a plot to kill not only a female classmate, but six other children. Authorities found a semiautomatic handgun, clip and knife in the backpack of one of the boys, who complained that the girl had become rude and “really annoying.” Police later overheard the two talking about killing whoever had snitched on them, too. Although children 8-12 are not considered mentally capable of criminal intent under Washington law, the local prosecutor plans to proceed on charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

A lot of insurance policies have those kinds of riders. Take a link through insurance like that written to protect, say, a piano player from damage to their hands. If they do something that is highly hazardous to their hands, and they get damaged…the insurance might not have to pay out, because if there was a rider stating they should not engage in something that could damage their hands, it would negate the insurance company’s responsibility to pay.

Yes, quite right. But I’m already on record here as believing that no matter what laws they pass they aren’t going to stop all gun violence. But insurance would protect good, honest gun owners by protecting them from being considered complicit in the violence if their stolen gun is used.

Just like this case, if the gun owner had insurance and following the rules FOR that insurance, he would not be held responsible if the gun HAD been used in a violent crime. But if he was careless, then he COULD be held legally responsible for what amounts to “enticement to commit a crime”

Keep Up the Good Fight!

February 16th, 2013

I am not disagreeing with the general concepts, just the concept of a defense if the insurance requirements are not met. That would lower the risk and lower the rate. The coverage should include the compensation of victims and thus reflect the real “market”. But as with most answers, the insurance in only part of the solution.

doggone, I disagree. Even with compensation, assuming the gun owner is alive and not responsible in the criminal act of the gun violence (although perhaps criminally liable for other violations as you suggest), the premiums would jump. but even the initial premiums would be higher to reflect the risk (and/or the requirements for discounts tougher). I don’t think drivers are more careless because there is insurance coverage and more than those committing a crime of passion think about the penalties.

“Where does a 10 year get the idea to act this extreme?”

There’s almost certainly a lot of factors, but I don’t totally reject the NRA’s blaming it on things like violent TV and games. I don’t think that’s the ONLY answer, but as I told my sister the other day…I was channel surfing and it was dead body…dead body…dead body…dead body. I find myself watching less and less TV because I’m just not interested in shows about dead bodies week after week after week.

Going back thru the insurance related posts, it amazes me the general misunderstanding most of those opining have of the concept of insurance relative to development of premium, insuring illegal acts, and otherwise providing coverage that goes beyond accidental shooting.

Despite the desires of lawmakers in various locales to pop off about underwriters offering coverage for intentionl acts otherwise against public policy, the industry would only agree if they could lay off that criminal risk to government. Not to mention the idea that the one’s who theoretically need criminal coverage the most, won’t be able to get affordable coverage.

Liability for keeping guns locked up is one thing…and even that situation presents problems unless soem biometric device was required for coverage. From my understanding, this risk management device combined with the cost of insurance coverage would result in an expense beyond the interest of exisiting owner…310 million guns, to expect retroactive adherence..

.
Make NO mistake.
There ARE progressives with principles.
They might be as rare as federales with an IQ above 30…………..but they DO exist—————————
.
The New York Daily News reports:

Princeton professor Cornel West says President Obama is a “war criminal.”
West, the prominent black academic and activist who has consistently been a harsh Obama critic, took issue with the White House’s covert drone program, saying that “the chickens are coming home to roost.”

“We’ve been talking about this for a good while, the immorality of drones, dropping bombs on innocent people,” West said on his “Smiley & West” radio show with Tavis Smiley.”It’s been over 200 children so far,” West said. “These are war crimes.”

West, who has previously said that “brother Barack was just completely mesmerized by the acceptance of the establishment,” compared Obama to former Presidents George W. Bush and Richard Nixon.

“Let us not be deceived: Nixon, Bush, Obama, they’re war criminals,” West said. “They have killed innocent people in the name of the struggle for freedom, but they’re suspending the law, very much like Wall Street criminals. The law is suspended for them, but the law applies for the rest of us.”

Punishment for a crime is an “exception”.

“Involuntary servitude is a United States legal and constitutional term for a person laboring against that person’s will to benefit another, under some form of coercion other than the worker’s financial needs.

While laboring to benefit another occurs also in the condition of slavery, involuntary servitude does not necessarily connote the complete lack of freedom experienced in chattel slavery; involuntary servitude may also refer to other forms of unfree labor. Involuntary servitude is not dependent upon compensation or its amount.

The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution makes involuntary servitude illegal under any U.S. jurisdiction whether at the hands of the U.S. government or in the private sphere, except as punishment for a crime: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Legal Dictionary:

“The term involuntary servitude is used in reference to any type of slavery, peonage, or compulsory labor for the satisfaction of debts. Two essential elements of involuntary servitude are involuntariness, which is compulsion to act against one’s will, and servitude, which is some form of labor for another. Imprisonment without forced labor is not involuntary servitude, nor is unpleasant labor when the only direct penalty for not performing it is the withholding of money or the loss of a job.”

A federal program that provides food for low-income women and their children is so badly mismanaged in Georgia that state taxpayers could be slammed with a $20 million penalty

Well isn’t that typical. Them lazy no good mothers and kids not lifting up their own bootstraps and costing millions. Why I was in line as the Whole Foods and….. I am sure the story will tell us how these members of the 47% are just ripping the “makers” off with their “taking”. Another drag on good small business owners….. oh wait….

The biggest problems come from small storefronts that traffic heavily in WIC vouchers. In the Northern District of Georgia, based in Atlanta, prosecutors handled three cases of WIC fraud worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Herbert Dix, owner of Spank’s Quick Stop in Griffin, is to go on trial later this year on 101 counts of fraud involving a total of $393,000. Shamsha Vasaya, owner of the Chevron Food Mart in Marietta, pleaded guilty last November to defrauding the Georgia WIC program of $557,421. She was sentenced to almost three years in prison. Lashunda Lovelace, owner of ABC KIDZ , is accused of defrauding the Georgia WIC program of almost $172,000.

josef: They have two characters, one was a manly gladiator and one was a servant who through circumstances became a fighter in the bands. They are lovers. They had a very long love scene in the last episode with lots of face sucking and grabbing and more graphic stuff……… As I was fast forwarding through it i wondered it that was something a gay man would do through a love scene involving a man and a woman.

While I know I’m somewhat of a minority, I liked the old days when love scenes left some (most) to the imagination. And while I’m sure that Spartacus isn’t the first to be as equal opportunity with the gay love scenes, it was one of the few times I have encountered it and so the question popped up in my mind. Fred, don’t you feel naughty doing a beer run on a Sunday night?

It used to be so taboo.

Bro, you gotta do one more.

The odds are on your side big time now!

Just do it.

This compilation (on cassette) was one of the very first pieces of music I ever bought.

Even back then, did I have some awesome taste in music, or what?! LOL!

Fred, Oh, we got Muslims around. And Hindu. Some of my kids best frinds were Hindu. And one of my kids father-in-law was Hindu. Went to his funeral. The Minister (sic) did a good job. He knew is audience was mostlynot Hindu and did well.

Oscar? What does Hindu have to do with Muslim? My next door neighbor is Hindu. They don’t do Allah, they do 330 MILLION other gods and minor deities instead……..

On the other side I have the Greek orthodox and his nasty Missiouri wife convert. Next to them is the Buddhist from Thailand and her Wisconsin heathen hubby. Next to them is the militant yankee Jewish wench and her coonass Catholic Hubby. We of course are the protestants. I’m a redneck and my wife is…………..

We have the lesbians down the street, the Cubans on the corner, the Chinese dude and his violently atheist wife across the street from them. Don’t forget the nasty old spinster lady who teaches piano. The black folks across from HER and the Indians next to them. I can go on, but NO Muslims………….. we are quite diverse.
