The terrifying yet sadly amusing world of Wayne LaPierre

Coming to an America near you!!

Coming to an America near you!!

I am very, very grateful that I do not live in Wayne LaPierre’s world. Because as described in a new column by the NRA leader, that world is a scary place right out of a Mad Max movie:

“Meanwhile, President Obama is leading this country to financial ruin, borrowing over a trillion dollars a year for phony “stimulus” spending and other payoffs for his political cronies. Nobody knows if or when the fiscal collapse will come, but if the country is broke, there likely won’t be enough money to pay for police protection. And the American people know it.

Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that….

gunmedia15n-1-web

Responsible Americans realize that the world as we know it has changed. We, the American people, clearly see the daunting forces we will undoubtedly face: terrorists, crime, drug gangs, the possibility of Euro-style debt riots, civil unrest or natural disaster.

Since the election, millions of Americans have been lining up in front of gun stores, Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops exercising their freedom while they still have it. They are demonstrating they have a mass determination to buy, own and use firearms. Millions of Americans are using market forces like never before to demonstrate their ardent support for our firearm freedoms. That’s one of the very best ways we can Stand And Fight.”

There’s a quivering, even pornographic quality to LaPierre’s description of the apocalypse that looms ahead. And isn’t it interesting that his recommended solution — BUY MORE GUNS!!! BUY MORE AMMO!!!! PANIC!! – just happens to dovetail with the best interests of his paid masters in the firearms industry.

images-4

As he puts it in his closing:

“We will not surrender. We will not appease. We will buy more guns than ever. We will use them for sport and lawful self-defense more than ever. We will grow the NRA more than ever. And we will be prouder than ever to be freedom-loving NRA patriots. And with your help, we will ensure that the Second Amendment remains America’s First Freedom.”

Having posted that bit @ 11.11, I do think that the cray-cray paranoia you get from Wayne and his toadies isn’t entirely misplaced. I mean, there WILL be some modest gun legislation to emerge, both short-term (i.e. whatever can get pushed through this Congress) and down the road (when the majority of non-gun-owning America + the non-crazy gun owners finally tire of being dictated to by these fringers). Slowly their world is coming to an end, and nobody’s ever happy about that.

At least some will make a show of not going gentle into that good night, although hopefully that lack of gentility will be mostly non-violent in nature. But with these guys, who knows.

I’m perfectly willing to allow open ownership and carry of firearms to whoever wants them on one condition.

Every firearm owner and user is deemed by law. jointly and severally, to consent to the application of a strict liability standard with respect to the consequences of each and every round they fire.

In other words, if you ’stand your ground’ and exchange fire with a bad guy, then you’re liable for any damage, injury or death caused directly or indirectly by the shots you fired. And just so we’re all on the same page, ’strict liability’ means that if your round is found in a dead bystander, you’re *automatically guilty* of wrongful death at best, manslaughter or second-degree murder at worst. The specific charge you’d be punished for would be determined by the facts and circumstances surrounding the events that led you to shoot that bystander (whether you meant to or not).

I don’t have a problem with people owning firearms; I own firearms myself. My problem is with people who misuse them or who don’t think before they use them. Perhaps by raising the stakes in this way, people will think a little more before they shoot.

Nothing should be banned. Just increase the penalties for any issue (notice I did not say crime) involving a firearm. If you shoot somebody automatic life in prison, if your gun goes off while cleaning and hurts some one automatic life in prison. If you are a “responsible” gun owner and you forgot the gun was in your luggage when you go to the airport, automatice 10 years. Responsible gun owners should know where their gun is at all times.

They actually used the analogy that it takes less time for the check than the time spent in the normal traffic stop. Sounds like the process was working as designed. IF the federal database is working like it should, it SHOULD only take a few seconds for completion.

EC, setting aside my skepticism that you are quite as unaware of / can’t recall the grotesque rumor mongering indulged in by the media at the time of the disaster…

http://reason.com/archives/2005/12/01/they-shoot-helicopters-dont-th

[T]he basic premise of the article that introduced the New Orleans helicopter sniper to a global audience was dead wrong, just like so many other widely disseminated Katrina nightmares. No 7-year-old rape victim with a slit throat was ever found, even though the atrocity was reported in scores of newspapers. The Convention Center freezer was not stacked with 30 or 40 dead bodies, nor was the Superdome a live-in morgue. (An estimated 10 people died inside the two buildings combined, and only one was slain, according to the best data from National Guard officials at press time.)

Tales of rapes, carjackings, and gang violence by Katrina refugees quickly circulated in such evacuee centers as Baton Rouge, Houston, and Leesville, Louisiana–and were almost as quickly debunked.

From a journalistic point of view, the root causes of the bogus reports were largely the same: The communication breakdown without and especially within New Orleans created an information vacuum in which wild oral rumor thrived. Reporters failed to exercise enough skepticism in passing along secondhand testimony from victims (who often just parroted what they picked up from the rumor mill), and they were far too eager to broadcast as fact apocalyptic statements from government officials–such as Mayor Ray Nagin’s prediction of 10,000 Katrina-related deaths (there were less than 900 in New Orleans at press time) and Police Superintendent Edwin Compass’ reference on The Oprah Winfrey Show to “little babies getting raped”–without factoring in discounts for incompetence and ulterior motives.

Problem is, there are STILL people who choose to believe much of what got reported as “news” at the time, because (I’m assuming here) it reinforces their prejudices about Those People.

But, I am not the one using a firearm in the commission of a crime. Putting law abiding citizens, like me, through hoops will only affect me. It will have no impact whatsover on the core problem which is gun violence. Targeting individuals that will comply with all the laws is easy, but completely ineffective.

Some of you guys are seriously mixing up correlation and causation.

The NRA and LaPierre have not created or caused anything. They are merely a result of a large constituency.

Its not popular to say, or admit, but the 2A movement is as grass-roots as anything else out there. And its supporters are voting with their wallets every single day spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on firearms and ammunition.

If you look at the amount of money that has been spent on firearms it is staggering. In January there were nearly 2 Million background checks performed. Even if we only assume half of those went through and a firearm was sold that is still a million firearms. If you conservatively set the average transaction price at $500 each, Americans spent $500,000,000 on firearms in a single month this year. Now consider that Obama raised only $750,000,000 for his entire presidential campaign(this is across multiple YEARS of campaigning).

Like it or not the public is voting with its wallet.

Banner123,

The NRA is and has been an advocate for background checks. Their point is that people found to be fraudulently attempting to obtain firearms who’re in the existing database of those who cannot legally possess firearms are mostly not prosecuted. Also there’s government resistance to including those who’re mentally unfit or those who have a history of violent domestic behavior. They say if these issues are properly addressed they would support universal background checks.

What we’re talking about is the restriction on types of weapons and ammo used, like military equipment etc. Are you promoting the idea of tanks and bombs and chemical weapons being included in the interpretation of the 2nd Amendment? Voting is a states issue and any identification required by the states should be an ID of their choosing. I do not suport a national database for gun purchases.

Of course the check lasted about 2 seconds – Each time I purchased a firearm, the background check took about 30 min. Has ANYONE here had a background check that lasted less than 1 minute?

and who is to say the machine is working correctly or even turned on? – Yes, because a $3.83 BILLION company will risk their license to sell firearms in order to make +/-$100 profit by selling a firearm to someone WITHOUT performing the FEDERALLY MANDATED background check.

Well gee godless, we certainly do not want to inconvenience the old man that blew away the young man for turning around in his driveway – odds are, that “old man” would have still been able to leaglly purchase a fire arm.

or the olympic runner that blew away his girlfriend (4 shots) thinking she was an intruder. – He lives in S. Africa. These laws would not affect him.

Also, S. Africa’s gun laws are stricter than ours.

“In South Africa, owning a gun is conditional on a competency test and several other factors, including background checking of the applicant, inspection of an owner’s premises, and licensing of the weapon by the police introduced in July 2004. The process is currently undergoing review,[1] as the police are at present, not able to adequately or within reasonable time, process either competency certification, new licenses or renewal of existing licenses. Minimum waiting period frequently exceeds 2 years from date of application.[2]”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger

The GAU-8 itself weighs 620 pounds (280 kg), but the complete weapon, with feed system and drum, weighs 4,029 pounds (1,828 kg) with a maximum ammunition load. It measures 19 ft 5 1⁄2 in (5.931 m) from the muzzle to the rearmost point of the ammunition system, and the ammunition drum alone is 34.5 inches (88 cm) in diameter and 71.5 inches (1.82 m) long.[5] Power for operating the gun is provided by twin 77 hp electric motors. The magazine can hold 1,174 rounds, although 1,150 is the typical load-out. Muzzle velocity when firing Armor-Piercing Incendiary rounds is 3,250 feet per second (990 m/s).

Because, I should have the right to any weapon I want, right?

If you plan on carrying a firearm outside of the home for personal protection in Georgia you must be fingerprinted and undergo a background check to be issued a Georgia Firearms License.

Actually, I just believe that is for concealed carry. You can carry in the open with no permit. The law may have changed though.

So what? Does that mean we should trust the public with fully automatic weapons with no regulation, as an example? After all, it is the people who decide what it is used for. Interestingly enough, even Reagan didn’t agree with this viewpoint of trusting the people as much as you do when you say it’s all about people deciding what to use something for.

No you cannot carry a gun outside of your home, or vehicle without a valid Georgia Firearms License. I seem to recall that the law does allow for an independent business owner to have a firearm for protection at his or her place of business.

As a Life member of the NRA I would expect name calling from the gun haters here.
Just a fact or two:
NRA membership continues to grow by the thousands each week. It has NEVER been stronger than it is today. People are not joining in droves because they have confidence that Obama (and Jay et al) are going to look out for their second amendment rights.
Your hero Dirty Harry Reed is a supporter and, in fact, is responsible for putting the anti-registration clause in the “pass it to know what is in it” health care grab act.
Pass new laws? No very likely.
If any new laws are passed – expect me and millions of fellow gun owners to pay about as much attention to them as Atlanta drivers do to the speed limit on I 285

A new academic study confirms that front groups with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry and the billionaire Koch brothers planned the formation of the Tea Party movement more than a decade before it exploded onto the U.S. political scene.

Far from a genuine grassroots uprising, this astroturf effort was curated by wealthy industrialists years in advance. Many of the anti-science operatives who defended cigarettes are currently deploying their tobacco-inspired playbook internationally to evade accountability for the fossil fuel industry’s role in driving climate disruption.

Cons are so owned… by the Koch boys, that is. They knew that the GOP was the Party of the Stupid long before Jindal ever figured it out and they used it to their advantage. They still are.

Yep, when the rules don’t work in your favor, simply change the rules!

DIA, a bit of recent history on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_option

The ["nuclear option"] maneuver was brought to prominence in 2005 when Majority Leader Bill Frist (Republican of Tennessee) threatened its use to end Democratic-led filibusters of judicial nominees submitted by President George W. Bush. In response to this threat, Democrats threatened to shut down the Senate and prevent consideration of all routine and legislative Senate business. The ultimate confrontation was prevented by the Gang of 14, a group of seven Democratic and seven Republican Senators, all of whom agreed to oppose the nuclear option and oppose filibusters of judicial nominees, except in extraordinary circumstances.

and what that fails to point out succinctly, but I will–the Democrats caved, they allowed a vote on the nominee in question. Should the Republicans do likewise, I don’t’ think we’ll hear much about the nuclear option… until the NEXT example of foot-dragging on one of Obama’s high-level nominees gets some publicity.

In 1982 seven people were killed by poisoned tylenol pills. In response drug companies developed layers of protection to prevent tampering with pills. Of course, Johnson & Johnson is a responsible consumer products company, so they had a reputation to protect.
Now, 10,000 people will be killed this year by guns, but we cannot do anything to improve the safety of gun use
Maybe the difference is that J & J knew they might be sued, if they didn’t take steps. Whereas, Wayne provides the protection for the gun manufacturers and dealers, so they don’t worry about being held responsible.
A victim of gun violence should have the same recourse as someone hurt in an auto accident. There is liability insurance to pay medical and death benefits. Gun insurance should be universally required, so gun buyers pay the true cost of their gun ownership. We don’t know which buyer is going to drive up to Chicago and sell guns to the gangs, but we know somebody does. In fact, the poster here who said the bad guys will always have guns was probably quoting from the advertizing pitch of the gun runners –”Don’t worry, as long as I’m around you’ll have a reliable source of guns.”
The cost of caring for victims of gun violence is probably a major cost for taxpayers. I am tired of subsidizing the profits of gun dealers and manufacturers, while I have to worry that I might turn around in the wrong driveway.

oh, something from way earlier, I meant to address:

Even George W. Bush dropped his membership in the NRA over the tone of their remarks

I’m pretty sure you are thinking of George H.W. Bush.

http://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/11/us/letter-of-resignation-sent-by-bush-to-rifle-association.html

I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on good people.

Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country — and serve it well he did.

In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.

[...]

I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.’s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.

However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.

You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list.

I remember wanting to stand and cheer when I first read that, back in the day.

So what? Does that mean we should trust the public with fully automatic weapons with no regulation, as an example? – Did I say that?

After all, it is the people who decide what it is used for. – Are you say that people DON’T decide how a tool is used?

Interestingly enough, even Reagan didn’t agree with this viewpoint of trusting the people as much as you do when you say it’s all about people deciding what to use something for. – First, I don’t give a bag of frozen monkey nipples what Reagan thought, I’m not a registered republician. “… coalition building should proceed along two tracks: a) a grassroots organizational and largely local track,; b) and a national, intellectual track within the DC-New York corridor. Ultimately, we are talking about a “movement,” a national effort to change the way people think about government’s (and big business) role in our lives. Any such effort requires an intellectual foundation – a set of theoretical and ideological arguments on its behalf.”

John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.’s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.

Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government’s “go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens.” (Your words)

While I do not wish people to shoot other people, I could easily see how it would be more than possible for LaPierre to be shot by a mentally unstable NRA member, or shot and killed while defending himself, or shot and killed with his own weapon. All of these are statistically likely ways for murders to happen.

With respect to Crime insurance example, is the crime committed by the insured paying premiums?

Maybe this will help:

As a matter of public policy, the law will not allow a business owner to insure against intentional acts or crimes. The reason is because it is assumed that if this is allowed, then businesses will not take steps to stop such actions or will engage in such acts because the acts are insured. The law presumes business owners will treat this as a cost of doing business rather than taking steps to stop the event from occurring. In fact, most states allow insurance only for fortuitous events – events that are “accidents.”

It is a complicated and most litigated act for insurance purposes. In cases of vicarious criminal liability, say an employee intentionally kills a patron, the entity will have coverage to the extent that they did a poor job hiring or otherwise created an environment ripe for the killing, but the perpetrator will not be covered for damages caused.

TBG: People misuse items all the time. Ever use a butter knife on a screw? Ever use your cell phone as a light at night?

OK, while I see your point that people misuse things, your examples aren’t exactly “misuse.”

And no, you didn’t say exactly what I was asking questions about, hence why I was asking questions. I didn’t say you said those things. But you say very little.

Yes, people misuse firearms. However, firearms are pretty dangerous even if a “good guy” has them. The fact that some people use guns “correctly,” which I assume means for defense or hunting, does not excuse a blaise attitude about making it EASY for people to MISUSE weapons, first of all by making it easy for them to be acquired and secondly by creating versions of the weapons that are more efficient (and btw, ICYMI, you were wrong about the other items I listed in a previous thread being more or equally as efficient as a gun. Guns win that one hands down, otherwise we’d be claiming those items for self defense and hunting).

Just because most people properly use a staircase does not mean we should not install guard rails to help reduce the chance of accidental or intentional misuse (i.e. falling down the stairs, tripping, being knocked down by another, etc). The same is true for guns. Just because a lot of people “use them properly,” does not mean they should be a free and clear easy to get and easy to use item readily available to everyone. They are dangerous, much more so than a knife or a bat or a car etc etc.

Deliberate murders are, year by year, perpetuated using firearms about 2/3 of the time. That’s 2 out of every 3 instances. Guns make it easy. And there is no evidence to support the idea that a lack of guns increases the violent crime rate unless you cherry pick. If it were true, it would be true EVERYWHERE and more guns would equal less crime EVERYWHERE. And as it turns out, there are quite a few places in which this is not the case.

Now, I’m not saying we should ban all the guns, but I am saying it isn’t a straight up invitation to criminals if we do.

I happen to think it equally likely that a mentally ill person might attack him along with several others if he happens to be in the wrong crowded area at the wrong time. Drudge often posts articles with their own headlines that mislead as to the actual article’s content, sometimes even imply the direct opposite of what the article actually says. Drudge posts articles in a biased way, and doesn’t always post from legitimate sources. It does, however, either follow up on or reinforce the talking points of the day. So how does one post an article “in a biased way”? That is an absurd comment. If drudge posts the article and folks want to read the article then it is what it is. There’s no “biasing” an article unless you just post bits and pieces of it only.

“It does, however, either follow up on or reinforce the talking points of the day.”

Stevie Ray – I don’t think the subject is so complicated, unless you are an actuary or a lawyer. When someone buys a gun at a gun show there is a 40% probability that there will be no background check. And, the gun is then free in America. They can sell it to a drug gang – ala Fast and Furious, they can load it and leave it on the kitchen table, or they can shoot themselves in the head. All of these things happen with some regularity in our country.
Gun buyers should pay into a liability pool, so that when someone is killed or injured by guns, they do not automatically become a cost for the taxpayers of Fulton county which provides care for gun victims at Grady.
Suggesting that people would not try to avoid getting shot, if there was a liability pool for victims is absurd.

Before you get so bent out of shape, grasshopper, you should take a couple of journalism classes. You are focused on headlines, which represent only a part of media bias. Arguably the biggest bias come from the selection of stories to cover or NOT cover. Why don’t you see how many times the “mainstream” media “covered” (unproven) allegations of adultery regarding Herman Cain and how many times they have so far covered allegations of pedophilia against Senator Menendez? Again, how do you like the kool-aid?

I have an idea that gun manufacturers could initiate. They could install a device to record the fingerprint of the buyer. The gun would not work, unless the user’s fingerprint matched the buyer of the gun. That would have saved everyone in Newtown. I’m quite sure such technology already exists, so this could be done quickly.
This would be similar to the breathalyzer that a repeated DUI offender must use before starting his car. This is another step that has helped reduce the number of fatalaties due to drunk drivers.

Brought to you from your friendly TSA brown shirt—————-

“Thievery is a hallmark of government, inherent, unalterable. Politicians and bureaucrats always steal their victims’ property, whether through inflation, taxation, or outright robbery (euphemized as “confiscation”), either for their own aggrandizement or to suborn the serfs lest they protest such immorality rather than plead for more.

But there’s a special brand of dictatorship that destroys property instead of stealing it. These savages seem particularly incensed at art, culture, anything intellectual, sophisticated or refined. And they gleefully attack such. Who can forget the Nazis’ burning of books? Or the TSA’s* demolition of musical instruments: “…shortly after 9/11, [renowned Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman’s Steinway] was confiscated at JFK Airport when he landed in New York to give a recital at Carnegie Hall. Thinking the glue smelled funny, the TSA decided to take no chances and destroyed the instrument.” Yes. A Steinway. Which Mr. Zimerman had modified himself.

In case anyone still doubts the TSA’s unspeakable barbarity, it has now broken “a rare Heinrich Knopf bow belonging to [cellist] Alban Gerhardt … In what the cellist called ‘an act of brutal and careless behaviour’, the bow stick … was snapped in two, over the bridge of the cello, by air security staff at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, as they examined the case’s contents.”

In response, the TSA’s sponges and spokesliars began shoveling their usual dung. “In an e-mail, TSA spokesman Lisa Farbstein said the agency ‘takes the issue of claims very seriously…’” Yeah, that would explain why it “paid out only 13% of … LAX passengers’ claims for laptops. As for lost or damaged digital cameras, the TSA approved fewer than 1% of those claims,” according to an “analysis” of “TSA records” at the Los Angeles Times.

But I interrupted ole Lisa. She “add[ed], ‘it truly is a shame about Mr. Gerhardt’s bow…’”

Oh, indeed. And just think: ruining a bow worth $20,000 pales to nothing when stacked against the TSA’s evisceration of basic decency, common sense, privacy, the Constitution, and liberty.

Former San Diego mayor Maureen O’Connor has admitted in federal court that she misappropriated $2 million from her late husband’s charitable foundation due to a gambling addiction in which won more than $1 billion but lost even more over nearly a decade.

O’Connor made the acknowledgement Thursday in an agreement with the government to defer prosecution for two years while she attempts to repay the debt.

O’Connor was the Democratic leader of California’s second-largest city from 1986 to 1992. The two-term mayor was elected San Diego’s first female leader after eight years on the City Council. She was married to Robert O. Peterson, founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain.

Prosecutors say her gambling winnings amounted to more than $1 billion from 2000 to 2009 but she lost more than that.

It was overstated for sarcastic effect. But Frank Marshall, Obama’s mentor, was indeed a Marxist. And Bill Ayers was in fact a terrorist. And Jeremiah Wright has indeed shown himself to be somewhat racist.

A better question for someone like you might be this: why have published statements regarding Obama been edited or revised since around the middle of the last decade? For example, consider these two articles:

It should be obvious by now that the National Rifle Association is run by unstable personality disorders and that they are opposed to back-ground checks because they would not be able to pass them. Wayne LaPierre, now well known, was rejected by the U.S. Army as unfit to carry a firearm because of a congenital psychological disorder (he has refused to disclose the exacty psychiatric diagnosis or medications and therapy prescribed.). David Keene apparently purchased a semi-automatic hand-gun for his son, David Keene, Jr. who used it on the George Washington Parkway in an attempt to murder a woman who had cut him off in traffic. Jr. is reported to have received 10 years. Ted Nugent is so obviously unhinged that no one would sell him either a gun or a drink. He reports that he lost control of his bowels when faced with his U.S. Army induction physical and was also found to be unfit for firearm possession. It would appear that anyone considered unfit for the U.S. Army should be on the no-sale list. The cursory back-ground check currently in-place for some licensed dealers is clearly inadequate. On average guns killed 88 Americans and injured 202 each day during 2011. When available, it is estimated that firearm homicides and suicides in 2012 will exceed motor vehicle fatalities. (N Engl J Med 2013:368:397-399) Are they WELL REGULATED as prescribed by the Second Amendment? Obviously not. If you own a gun, you are statistically, significantly more likely to commit murder and to eventually commit suicide (Univ Penn LDI Issue Brief 2003;8(8), 1-4). What mental screening should be required prior to purchase? I propose a significant upgrade. If guns cause more human damage than automobiles then funds of equivalent amounts should be devoted to registration of each weapon, licensure on your birthday, a psychological screening test (MMPI), a practical operation test, and a written test of the weapons laws.

TBG: People misuse items all the time. Ever use a butter knife on a screw? Ever use your cell phone as a light at night?

OK, while I see your point that people misuse things, your examples aren’t exactly “misuse.” – Whatever.

And no, you didn’t say exactly what I was asking questions about, hence why I was asking questions. I didn’t say you said those things. But you say very little. *** I say what I need to say, using the words I chose to use. You are the one who feel the need to add meanings and thoughts not expressed by others.***

Yes, people misuse firearms. However, firearms are pretty dangerous even if a “good guy” has them. ***Never said they were not***

The fact that some people use guns “correctly,” which I assume means for defense or hunting, does not excuse a blaise attitude about making it EASY for people to MISUSE weapons, first of all by making it easy for them to be acquired ***Please point out *MY* blaise attitude. Thanks***

secondly by creating versions of the weapons that are more efficient ***a weapon is only as efficient as the user***

(and btw, ICYMI, you were wrong about the other items I listed in a previous thread being more or equally as efficient as a gun. Guns win that one hands down, otherwise we’d be claiming those items for self defense and hunting). ***YOUR opinion. Under the parameters you initially set, EVERYTHING I listed would be as efficient as a gun.***

Just because a lot of people “use them properly,” does not mean they should be a free and clear easy to get and easy to use item readily available to everyone. ***Why are you arguing against a point *I* didn’t make?***

They are dangerous, much more so than a knife or a bat or a car etc etc. ***They are only as dangerous as the person using them.***

Deliberate murders are, year by year, perpetuated using firearms about 2/3 of the time. That’s 2 out of every 3 instances. Guns make it easy. And there is no evidence to support the idea that a lack of guns increases the violent crime rate unless you cherry pick. ***When did *I* say otherwise? Do you play tennis alone so you can cover BOTH sides?

If it were true, it would be true EVERYWHERE and more guns would equal less crime EVERYWHERE. And as it turns out, there are quite a few places in which this is not the case. ***See above***

Now, I’m not saying we should ban all the guns, but I am saying it isn’t a straight up invitation to criminals if we do. ***See above***

When it comes to someone advocating violence re: the gun control issue, it’s usually the pro gun control advocate proposing violence against the anti gun control.

I happen to think it equally likely that a mentally ill person might attack him along with several others if he happens to be in the wrong crowded area at the wrong time. And I would place bets that LaPierre having a gun would have done next to nothing to stop or slow the gunman. So far, only instances in which trained officers or law enforcement officials are already around has a gunman been subdued, and even then it’s hit or miss.

Not as terrifying as liberal LALA Land where Dorner’s followers cheered him on social media sites, and liberal professors appear on CNN and declare him a modern day Django. He should have changed his name to Djorner.

Sad thing about reading LaPierre’s rant and some of the commentary here is that those who are hunkering down and stockpiling arms against the apocalypse are the ones most likely to hasten its coming. They’re beinning to slowly become victims of their own paranoia. They’re so sure the apocalypse is coming and so angst-ridden that it hasn’t come yet that they end up snapping and going postal to release that paranoia and angst. I’m not worried as much about the “terrorists” or the “tyrrany” from the Evil Government, I’m scared to death of the increasing number of fools who are drunk on the kind of lunacy LaPierre spouts on a daily basis, and that is prosoletyzed by Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck. I don’t how we stop that, but we need to get busy trying before more of these idiots become yet another sad headline.

Nancy Lanza was the epitome of what is wrong with the NRA and the gun hugger crowd. I guess she was prepping for the signal of impending doom from Glenn Beck end and not for the safety of her community. That’s where the right wing interpretation of the second amendment gets you.

Good article, Jay. I’m sure some Roman speaker was saying things like “these Gauls aren’t a threat’ in the same manner at about the forth century. I’m constantly amazed by the blindness of people that think the happy little bubble they live in will continue forever.

Let’s turn back the clock of time and reflect on the LA Riots after the Rodney King debacle. Remember the photos of looters running rampant in the streets? Remember, then NRA President, Charlton Heston being asked by his Liberal friends and neighbors to borrow a firearm to protect themselves and their property? Remember the Korean shop-owners on the roofs of their businesses with rifles and shotguns protecting themselves, their families and their businesses? Hmmmmm, how soon this nation forgets.

Nice that you won’t accept comments that don’t agree with your stupid opinions-typical liberal mindset.

I. Finger — “Since the Ten Commandments are still there the clear winner seems to be GOD…”

Again, since the case was dismissed, there’s no winner and no loser.

How can you speak of a winner and a loser in a court case when no hearing or trial was actually held?
