Some 200 to 250 Americans assembled peacefully on the grounds of the state Capitol this morning to petition their government and rally in support of their interpretation of the Second Amendment. The vast majority were openly carrying weapons; roughly a third were carrying semi-automatic long guns of the variety known by some as assault weapons.
One speaker, former gubernatorial candidate Ray McBerry, warned the crowd that “the foreign-born Marxist in the White House and his Marxist attorney general” were using “staged crisis events — yes, I said staged crisis events” to justify confiscation of their weapons. That got a loud cheer and applause.
According to McBerry, the Obama administration is using these “staged crisis events” in exactly the same way that Adolph Hitler used the Reichstag fire, as an excuse to impose complete tyranny on the American people. The national socialist government in Washington is following the blueprint to power that the national socialist government in Germany followed, he said, reeling off a string of comparisons that would be uncanny if true.
That too drew strong applause.
“Which federal gun laws are constitutional?” McBerry asked.
“NONE!” the crowd roared back.
“You know the answer,” he said smiling.
(Just as an aside, earlier this week McBerry issued a press release announcing his endorsement of U.S. Rep. Paul Broun for U.S. Senate.)
Security at the event was heavy, watchful but not intrusive. State troopers armed with M-6 carbines, a version of the AR-15, stood nearby. The GBI’s bomb-disposal truck was parked on an adjacent street, just in case. An armed officer stood on a church roof across the street.
McBerry was followed by Bill Looman, who told the crowd that he would be self-editing his own comments about Obama, and might not be saying all the things he really thought. It seems that Looman’s past comments about the president on Facebook and other forums, as well as his ties to the North Georgia militia, made the Secret Service nervous and convinced them that it was necessary to visit Looman in person. Just to talk things over, all friendly like.
Like McBerry, Looman talked of the necessity of firearms to fend off what he believes to be impending tyranny. He also mentioned his work with Oathkeepers, an organization of former and current members of the military, law enforcement and other agencies who have sworn never to follow government orders to force Americans into concentration camps, or to go house to house to confiscate firearms, or to blockade entire American cities, as the British did to Boston.
You know, just in case such orders should ever be issued.
One enterprising young man even used the symbol of his Second Amendment rights, his firearm, to exercise his First Amendment rights as well:

He could use some work on his spelling, but it’s the thought that matters, right?
UPDATE: As commenters below have pointed out, the line “This machine kills fascists” appeared on legendary folksinger Woody Guthrie’s guitar, and Guthrie in turn reportedly borrowed it from a slogan painted on airplanes used by the anti-fascist Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.

Why do people get permits to carry concealed weapons? Is it because they like walking in unsafe areas?
I have one, but only carry on rare occasions. I got one because I went to buy a shotgun to go turkey hunting one day and was denied due to a snafu in the background check system. As soon as I got that straightened out, I went and got my CWP. Now heathen don’t wait on no background check if he wants to buy a gun.
It also allows the carry of a wicked ass knife concealed without wading through the confusing regulations about what one is allowed to carry.
Do they have something some dangerous criminal wants?
You don’t?
And it makes liberals uncomfortable to see us gun owners packing in the open. Less problem for all to just conceal it when in public.

That’s not a subject open to varying opinions or conclusions. It’s a matter of settled law. Then again, maybe these people view our Constitution, the establishment of the judiciary and the Supreme Court with the decisions of law provided by the Supreme Court to be null, void, and an exercise in tyranny.

FWIW, it’s perfectly legal to yell “fire” in a crowded theater… if there actually is a fire.
That part is almost never mentioned.
true enough–just fyi and to be a bit nitpicky:
“Shouting fire in a crowded theater” is a popular metaphor and frequent paraphrasing of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.’s opinion in the United States Supreme Court case Schenck v. United States in 1919. The paraphrasing does not generally include the word falsely, which was originally used and highlights that speech which is dangerous and false, which can be distinguished from that which is truthful but also dangerous.

Wow – that was four pages ago – I always catch these when the bloggers have all exhausted the good stuff. But… to the above quote, I think this goes straight to the whole “militia” issue. You could have 20,000 of these people, all with their rifles, and it takes maybe a couple of F-16’s to wipe ‘em out. All the southern states can arm their whole population, and it will take less then a week for the Federal governemnt with it’s firepower, to stop it. Excellent question. Like, how does carrying an assault weapon make a man more of a man? If a lil’ ol’ gal like me can pick one up and do the same thing that a man wearing a “don’t tread on me” t-shirt does with it, does that make ME a man? Or does that make him a big ol’ p-ans-y for needing an assault weapon in order to feel like a man? Just curious.

She’s pretty sure Bob Dylan’s stoned all the time. I’ll ask her what she thinks about Willie Nelson.
FWIW, she’s also pretty sure that Mika Brzezinski often has a drink or two before the Shut Up, Mika Show airs each day. But NEVER when her dad’s a guest on the show.
Watch it for a couple of weeks; see if you can puzzle out when she’s had a few and when she’s stone cold sober.

Mike – that is a good point. But if you are army and see 20,000 citizens, all with rifles and mags holding 30 rounds dragging behind them off their belt, heading for, oh say, the office of the govenor. The President tells that army to keep civil rest, aren’t you bound to do just that? Isn’t the President the commander in chief? I just don’t know where we are going with all these weapons. I do think what is happeneing in Calif with the crazy well armed, well trained idiot is another good example as to why there must be background checks every 3 – 5 years for anybody who wants to own a weapon.

Jay – I can’t say for sure. Dylan appeared to be feeling REAL good when I saw him in concert back in ‘72 – and he was smoking something wrapped up in one of those roll your own papers. Great song writer but his voice – not so great.

“Paul, Lots of people in this country don’t understand the law (Example: “Innocent until proven guilty.” “You have to have a driver’s license to buy a car.”) That doesn’t make them nuts.”
True, too. But in this case, where there’s been applicable law settled five years ago, directly bearing on this issue of gun control, it is either gross ignorance or manipulative deceit for the leaders and speakers to keep repeating false information on the most basic of issues (the government wants to take your guns, there is no constitutional limit on gun ownership, etc).
The stuff about Obama – tyrant I just chalk up to weirdness. But the other – it’s like saying ‘the Constitution established four branches of government and Obama’s suppressing the fourth” or “government cannot interfere with any way a person wants to practice religion because we have freedom of religion’ or ‘newspapers and magazines can print whatever they want and any law to restrict that is unconstitutional!”

If that lone Black Panther Fox News loves so much was seen carrying a weapon at the rally they would have carried it live. Hannity would be going crazy. Fox and Friends would have 1 million old folks too scared to come out from under their beds.
