Georgia won’t be battleground in GOP civil war

For the GOP establishment, the lesson of the last two election cycles is clear: We can’t continue to let the party be hijacked by candidates and spokesmen from the far right. Not only have they cost the party a number of winnable Senate seats, they have tainted the party brand and contributed to its reputation as extremist.

Toward that end, Fox News is purging itself of the likes of Sarah Palin and Dick Morris. Karl Rove is forming a new SuperPAC, dedicated to ensuring that ultra-conservative tea-party candidates such as Todd Akin of Missouri, Richard Mourdock of Indiana, Christine O’Donnell of Delaware and Sharron Angle of Nevada never make it through GOP primaries and onto the general-election ballot, where they have proved disasters.

That hasn’t set well with the GOP’s conservative tea-party wing, which insists that the party’s woes can be blamed on just the sort of moderation that Rove advocates. The dispute sets up a battle likely to determine the future course of the Republican Party, but where will that battle take place? Nationally, attention has begun to focus on Georgia and the Senate seat that becomes open in 2014.

(For examples, see the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor and ABC News.)

At first blush, that makes sense, because we fit so many of the parameters of a perfect test case:

– The seat is open because a veteran Republican senator, Saxby Chambliss, declined to seek re-election after his efforts at budget compromise earned him the dreaded RINO tag.

– We have a conservative GOP base that tends to gravitate toward the most conservative candidate in the field, and if the tea-party movement has faded in other parts of the country, it remains a force to be reckoned with here in the Peach State. In other words, a Mourdock or Akin could win here.

– We are a red state — Mitt Romney won here by eight percentage points — but we are undergoing demographic changes that might, under perfect circumstances, allow a Democratic candidate to win a statewide race in 2014, as occurred in Missouri and Indiana.

– Most of all, we have Paul Broun.

paul-broun_AP

The controversial, even cartoonish congressman from Georgia’s 10th District fits perfectly into the Akin-Mourdock mold. He has an avid following among the most extreme Georgia conservatives, and he also has a penchant for the bizarre — likening President Obama to Hitler, calling him a Marxist, describing evolution and the Big Bang theory as “lies straight from the pit of hell” — that would make him vulnerable in a Georgia general election.

So there you go: in Broun and Georgia, the GOP establishment has a perfect test case of its campaign to pull the party back from the brink and toward the center, right?

Wrong, and here’s why: That case requires you to believe that Broun is a realistic threat to win the GOP nomination in Georgia, and he is not. People are trying to cast him in a role that grossly exaggerates both his ability and appeal. Among other problems, he won’t be able to raise enough money to compete statewide, and he doesn’t have the statewide network to offset that deficiency.

Most important, Broun isn’t running against Chambliss. By the time it’s complete, the GOP primary field will be brim-full of candidates with impeccable conservative credentials but without Broun’s penchant for foolishness. Broun simply won’t have the ideological space to define himself as THE conservative in the race, only as the crazy one. By the time Georgia Republicans go to the polls, the congressman from the 10th will be more sideshow than threat, and Rove and his SuperPAC don’t need to do a single thing to make that happen.

Call me conservative but the Democrats have been in charge for a while. Spending more than they have.

I won’t call you conservative as that’s demeaning to true conservatives. What I will call you, though, is ill-informed. Dems are in control of the Senate and the White House. All appropriations bills, you know the legislation that actually directs government spending, must begin in the House. The GOP has controlled the House since Jan 2011. Of the four trillion dollar deficits, I think they’re equally split 2-2 between the parties now.

This drone thingy or at least where it appears to be heading flys in the face of what we thougth we could expect from BO namely, an improved reputation and transparency.

Can’t answer for anybody else, but I expected business as usual. One thing that people tend to forget is that, when an administration changes, there are a few people who leave and are replaced. Most of the people who do the footwork stay around. You can’t turn a supertanker around in a matter of seconds, and you’re not going to change the operation of the US government with a period of 4-8 years. Just not gonna happen.

Neither the secretary of defense nor the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke to the secretary of state during the 8-hour attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012. At a Thursday hearing in the Senate, Republican Ted Cruz asked both Leon Panetta and Martin Dempsey, “In between 9:42 p.m., Benghazi time, when the first attacks started, and 5:15 am, when Mr. Doherty and Mr. Woods lost their lives, what converations did either of you have with Secretary Clinton?”

“We did not have any conversations with Secretary Clinton,” Panetta responded.

“And General Dempsey, the same is true for you?” Cruz asked. Dempsey confirmed this. Watch the video below:

My point about anyone taking any given demographic is true because that is what you did. The assumption that if any given party gets 8m more voters from any given demographic and it will just be static on the other side is asinine.

It’s absolutely incredible to me that anyone can think that flying a fully-equipped AC-130 into Libyan airspace and then punching holes in the suburban neighborhood where the Benghazi consulate was located would be in any way a good idea. Can anyone imagine a scenario in which that doesn’t end with the host nation telling us to GTFO?

When your embassy/consulate personnel are threatened, you call on the HOST NATION to protect them. That’s the way embassies and consulates work the whole world around. There’s not a detachment of American troops detailed to engage in combat if the grounds come under fire. The Marine detachments that embassies have are there to protect classified materials, classified commo gear and to — if necessary — protect embassy staff. That said, those detachments are usually quite small and aren’t well-equipped with the sort of weapons and gear needed to engage in a protracted firefight. That’s why you call on the host nation to protect your embassies and staff.

I have a great deal of respect for the Marine Security Detachments in embassies, especially those who are in dangerous parts of the world. It’s got to be scary to be out there with your azz hanging out in the wind, lightly armed and hours and hours away from any sort of American help or evacuation.

But, but, but, melanin is the most important thing in the world!

I faced some culture shock when I moved out here (decades ago) from California. We knew that ethnicity existed, but here were just so many different kinds of folks, it took too much effort to keep them sorted out, so we mostly didn’t bother.

Take Tiger Woods, who’s half-Korean, quarter white, and quarter black. Who has time to figure out what that means? It just wasn’t important enough to deal with.

When we moved to Georgia, we could tell there was sub-text we just weren’t getting – people didn’t act the way we were used to, and we didn’t know why. We finally learned about the Georgia “racial zeitgeist.” It still doesn’t seem worth the effort to deal with what is, at most, a superficial difference. *shrug*

“Like you peace loving Democrats did to Herman Cain?”

I’m pretty sure that if the Republicans wanted him as their candidate, they could have voted for him. It’s disingenuous to blame democrats who didn’t even vote in the primary.

Tons of respect for the office. Unfortunately we have a clown sitting in the seat. It would be nice if the “leader of the free world” knew the first thing about leadership.

It would be nice if he would pull a Clinton. Spend all his time chasing interns around the office and let the Republican Congress take care of business.

Not for one fraction of a second do I believe that the hard core Republicans would have treated Ms. Clinton one iota better than they have President Obama.

Maybe I’m wrong and talk of making her a failure would have begun on day three of her first term instead of day two like it did for the current CiC…

What ever happened to that poor women he harrassed? After he dropped out, all the liberal media attack dogs running her story 24/7 suddenly grew silent and lost all interest.

The Republicans had nothing to do with him dropping out.

WTF… and this country was not built on maggots like this being a frickin’ citizen. Be glad it ain’t WWII (see Dresden and other German cities.) At least we dusted of this scum and his snotty youngun’ and did not totally bomb out the place and kill everybody. This is just the debate those a$$holes want.their next move will be to increase their recruiting over here, knowing that they will be protected over there.

So what happened to all of them? Why are you so heartless to their plight that you dropped the case once Herman withdrew? Something so important the media had broadcast it 24/7 surely wouldn’t be brushed aside once the liberals acheived their objective for reporting the story would they?

If the person has an (R) behind their name, the important thing is the seriousness of the charge rather than if an actual crime was committed.

My recollection is that some had already settled and had been paid. But, their objection was to his qualification to be President. SO when he dropped out, what was to pursue further?

Sure it would. Because once out of the race Cain is no longer important.

Nobody cared about Donna Rice after Gary Hart dropped out of sight either.

Herman’s problems as a candidate were numerous and notable.

Clearly the man was nowhere near being capable for the office he was seeking. The man has never run for and won any elected office in his entire life – not even dogcatcher. Yet he felt he was ready to be the leader of the free world?

Much more damning was the litany of stupid and insensitive things the man has said – the direct consequence of being a political talk radio host. That job on one’s resume alone is a deal killer for most voters.

But for me, it was not the 999 thing or the balcks on the plantation thing or even the groping thing that was his most egregious failing as a man.

When he said that he was too young to participate in the civil rights movement (he was 20 years old in 1965) it was obvious he had an integrity and moral courage issue.

And ultimately, just like his party’s nominee, the people of this country found him unfit to lead…

And Jay continues his lecture on republican politics. And the answer still is that the party that promises and delivers the most “free stuff” to the masses will win and it does not matter if this is leading to this country’s demise. We now have a majority of people in this country who do not care what the cost is to our society just as long as they get what they need for free. Jay, we are headed for one party rule and that is exactly what you want because you have spent many many hours creating the propaganda to do it. And then, your man can destroy his detractors with impunity both physically and ideologically. Think of yourself as an ideological drone Jay because that is exactly what you and Luckovich and the rest of the liberals in the printed and electronic media have become for Obama. You have become mindless followers. You question nothing. One day your children will proud of you. Of course by now, thanks to you, they are more probably more than willing to serve a master.

You’ll recall that in 2012, Obummer signed the NDAA. This legislation authorizes the military to arrest and “indefinitely detain” American citizens Obummer dislikes — no charges, indictment or trial, and certainly no lawyers or evidence, necessary. Yep, that violates the Constitution. Big time. Not to mention American tradition, the last millennium of habeas corpus, and common decency. So Mr. Constitutional Law Professor insisted that he signed the bill with “serious reservations.” He also lied–sorry, promised that he would never, ever use NDAA’s powers — no, of course not, he merely collects such prerogatives as you or I would books or china cups, so he can set them on a shelf and admire them.

Several people immediately challenged the NDAA in court. And for a guy who so unenthusiastically signed the legislation in 2012 — and in 2013 as well — he has most vigorously defended it. Time after time, his lawyers have averred that it’s perfectly Constitutional to seize Americans merely on the president’s say-so, imprison them, and throw away the key. Judge Katherine Forrest declined to cooperate with such blatant evisceration of the Constitution and suspended the NDAA. Once again, Ole Reluctant Signer sprang into action, immediately appealing to the Second Circuit to overturn her ruling.

That hearing took place yesterday in New York City. And during the proceedings, Judge Lewis Kaplan “raised the fact that the ‘Executive Branch has been known to make things up.’”

Pretty bad when even the rubber-stamping courts admit that the Thief-in-Chief is a pathological liar.

Yea, people were angry about rising unemployemnt and a crappy economy and guess what…4 years later we still have unemployement higher than when Bush left, the economy still sucks, and for some damn unknown reason, everybody loves Obama.
