According to my colleague Jim Galloway, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is coming to the A-T-L tomorrow for a private conversation with black Republicans in the state, attempting to discover what the Grand Old Party can do differently to reach black voters.
Given the demographic changes underway in Georgia and Atlanta’s historic role as a center of both the black middle class and the civil rights movement, it’s an appropriate place to have the conversation.
The session is by invitation only, and is closed to the public. But it got me thinking: If you were in attendance, how would you advise Priebus? Why has the Republican Party — the party of abolition, of Abraham Lincoln, of Colin Powell and Condi Rice — found it so difficult to attract not just black voters but voters of almost any minority group, and more important, what can be done to change it?
I’ve written repeatedly that the current division is not merely bad for the Republican Party, it’s bad for the state of Georgia and bad for the country as a whole. But how can it be changed? (This assumes, of course, that this isn’t just another half-hearted PR scheme like previous “outreach efforts” by the party.)
So … any ideas?
(Personally, I thought the suggestions laid out by Kevin Williams in a recent Washington Post op-ed were a fine place to start. At the very least, adopting them would demonstrate an honest commitment to change the situation.)

“Having just lost an election, many Republicans are anxious to remake our party in the image of Democrats. The theory seems to be that whatever we’re doing isn’t working, so we better change everything.
But in fact, whatever Republicans did in 2012 — other than an overly long primary fight — worked amazingly well, given the circumstances.
In a detailed analysis of the 2012 election, William A. Galston, a fellow with the liberal Brookings Institution, makes a number of fascinating observations that Republicans would do well to consider before embracing amnesty, abortion, gay marriage and Beyonce.”

@Sinkwich, the selling of the American political system is known to just about every voter, and is resented by everyone but the ones with enough money to bribe “our representatives” – roughly 80+% of us, if this summer’s Georgia vote on restraining lobbyist gifts can be extrapolated. If the Republicans grabbed this issue and made real, effective changes to the current system, they would snatch momentum away from the Democrats who would be forced to respond. I’m not saying they can’t raise money, they just can’t stuff money into their own pockets from the same people they affect with legislation. I see a huge competitive advantage for Republicans in an area that neither party has been willing to address yet is of enormous concern and frustration to voters.

What’s driving Wall Street is solid corporate profit that’s not being invested in our domestic market e.g. negative GDP and unemployment close to 8% with less than 64% workforce participation as a result.

So, now we are to be concerned with that favorite liberal word…… diversity. Most of those that are considered “diverse” could give a fat damn about those who are not. And vice versa. I will pick and choose very carefully who I spend time with, trust to friendships and remain tolerant of and it is not some liberal’s business who that is. We might lose elections but elections are not the most important thing in life. I will remain as diverse as my conscience tells me to be and I don’t need some liberal talking head to tell me how to do it. And Bookman, the GOP will survive very well thank you….. with or without your help.

Especially, they should showcase the leadership demonstrated by Rep. They retire and go on Medicare because of serious medical problems, you nitwit.

The number of people who are over 64 who do not work because of a chronic illness or disability is 7.4%. 85.9% of the people say they don’t work because they are retired so I really don’t buy that most of those people would work if they could. They don’t work because they don’t have too.

They retire and go on Medicare because of serious medical problems, you nitwit.
That’s not the only, or even the major, reason. We continue to have a serious problem with age discrimination in the work place. In fact, people are expected to retire by 65 or so, and some organizations make a push to see that they do so. All of a sudden, those performance appraisals that once were glowing turn negative, and the problem isn’t the older worker’s performance. Younger people carry this ageism in their genes. Again and again, I see younger workers expressing resentment that an older worker hasn’t retired so as to open up an advancement opportunity or expressing the inherently biased opinion that they don’t mind working with older workers “provided they keep up.” This ageism is everywhere, including the selection process for promotion. When’s the last time you read about some 65-year-old hot-shot who got promoted to executive vice president?
It doesn’t help that bloggers here ordinarily known for liberal opinion refer to older people as “old geezers.”
And in this situation, people are seriously proposing raising the retirement age even further for SS and increasing the Medicare eligibility age to 67. Exactly how are the older workers going to survive if they retire?
No, illness is far from the major reason that people retire and sign up for Medicare. And to rub it in, federal law raises the Medicare premium significantly for anybody who doesn’t sign up promptly for Medicare.

There’s this to it, too, though…the more people who DON’T retire..the fewer jobs there are for younger workers. So which is better for the country: a population of retired older workers, or a population of discontented younger unemployed people?

“You should thank the getalifes and the taxpayers and the godzillas and the Jam of the political world they give your party hope and possibility.”
No need to thank me.
Just posting my opinion using facts and reality.
It is pretty easy.

Many of those who support the so-called conservative cause are keeping very quite about the impending calamity the House Repubs are about to bring on the WORLD economy, via the “fiscal cliff.”
Wonder how people are going to feel when they are without work, losing their homes, savings, medical coverage?
Does anyone believe the Repubs will be supported, knowing they have ruined the prospects for people to make a living?

Unfortunately the G.O.P should probably not even worry about swaying black voters. Because of the past history in Atlanta an most of the country. The blacks have joined together in their distain for anything that is or represents whites in their minds. Not all but most black parents teach their children that they are better then whites and to dislike them. Its called black liberation theology to us it makes no sense because its made up bs, but to them its the absolute truth. They will join the democrats because their parents do.
Republicans should instead focus on Latino’s they have more in common with us and are more rational, morale, family oriented they want better lives and are more religious. They also don’t carry hate in their hearts for whites unlike blacks.
Another option is to be more involved with independents we can help you guys but you have to be realistic and truthful to us. This is the best bet for Republicans to move the needle. Although at the rate the democrats are screwing up after these four years the G.O.P might not need any help at all. I would go out on a limb and say we might not see another dim in office for a while. They are ruining it for themselves i hope they never get another chance.
