GOP’s ire, once directed at Obama, now turns inward

There’s a lot of unhappiness out there.

For example, the Wall Street types who financed the GOP’s 2012 campaign, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to the party as well as to the SuperPACs run by Karl Rove and others, are not a happy lot.

They are unhappy because they got little or nothing for their investment; they are unhappy with the GOP’s deep reluctance to come to the aid of Hurricane Sandy victims in the Northeast; and as the Manhattan elite, they are unhappy about financing a party that picks on their gay friends and their Muslim friends and doesn’t seem all that friendly to their black friends either.

Rove and his buddies in the GOP political establishment are also very, very unhappy. They are unhappy because their deep-pocket donors are unhappy. They’re unhappy because the deeply conservative base that they created and nurtured along the way to a permanent Republican majority has now slipped their leash and now acts as if they, not the Roves of the world, ought to run the party and set its goals and pick its candidates.

Such impertinence is not appreciated.

To regain control, Rove and his allies have created a new front group, the Conservative Victory Fund, to siphon still more money from donors. This time, the money will be used to finance a war with the great unwashed within their own party and promote more electable (read: moderate and malleable) candidates. In effect, they seek to put their creature back on its leash, where it can be more useful to them.

“There is a broad concern about having blown a significant number of races because the wrong candidates were selected,” as Steven J. Law, president of Rove’s American Crossroads, told the New York Times.

And of course, those who identify as champions of the GOP grassroots aren’t happy either. They aren’t in the mood to listen to condescending lectures from fancy-dan consultants who spent hundreds of millions of other people’s money and got nothing for it, and now want to blame their failure on conservatives for being too conservative.

Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, founded by former Sen. Jim DeMint, put it bluntly:

“The Conservative Defeat Project is yet another example of the Republican establishment’s hostility toward its conservative base. Rather than listening to the grassroots and working to advance their principles, the establishment has chosen to declare war on the party’s most loyal supporters. If they keep this up, the party will remain in the wilderness for decades to come.”

And as our friends over at RedState put it:

“American Crossroads is creating a new Super PAC to crush conservatives, destroy the tea party, and put a bunch of squishes in Republican leadership positions. …I dare say any candidate who gets this group’s support should be targeted for destruction by the conservative movement.”

Live by the sword, die by the sword, I suppose.

Of course the “pout” about being punished for being a “friend of a terrorist” in the conned world does not go deep in real intellect. It remains on the superficial knee jerk level. The whole reason this comes up however is because of continued “progressive” interest in determining what is going on despite the claims of the idiot right. Human Rights Report: 54 Countries Helped CIA After 9/11
Tuesday, 05 Feb 2013 10:36 AM

By Lisa Barron

new report due out on Tuesday reveals that the CIA had help from some 54 countries in operating the agency’s detention and interrogation program after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to the New York Times.

The report by the Open Society Justice Initiative, a human rights advocacy group, details how countries offered different kinds of assistance to the United States in the mission against al-Qaida, including the establishment of secret prisons on their soil and use of their airports for refueling planes while transferring prisoners to other countries.

Amrit Singh, author of the “Globalizing Torture” report, told the Times she found evidence that 25 countries in Europe, 14 in Asia, and 13 in Africa, as well as Canada and Australia, had lent support to the CIA. Among the nations who aided the agency were Thailand, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Denmark, and Gambia.

“The moral cost of these programs was born not just by the U.S. but by the 54 other countries it recruited to help,” said Singh.

The report names 136 people who had been held or transferred by the CIA and details what, when, and where they were held, the biggest list yet compiled, the Times noted.

Many have condemned the interrogation techniques used by the CIA on terrorist suspects, denouncing them as torture and maintaining that they were both ineffective and illegal.

Former Bush administration officials have insisted that the so-called enhanced interrogation methods, such as water boarding and putting people in boxes, were needed to obtain information that was valuable in the war on terror.

The debate has once again heated up with the release of the film “Zero Dark Thirty,” which chronicles the hunt for Osama bin Laden and portrays torture as one of the methods used on CIA captives to get information.

President Barack Obama has banned torture, but after taking office in 2009 he opted not to set up a national commission investigating the use of such practices.

Singh told the Times that the U.S. had violated domestic and international law and that its efforts to avoid accountability were “beginning to break down.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee recently finished its own study of the CIA detention and investigation program, but it is classified and may never be released.

HOW TO CUT 2.3%

USE DEFENSE SPENDING CUTS
http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/09/army-to-congress-thanks-but-no-tanks/

Plus, from its point of view the Army would prefer to decide what it needs and doesn’t need to keep America strong while making tough economic cuts elsewhere.

“When a relatively conservative institution like the U.S. military, which doesn’t like to take risks because risks get people killed, says it has enough tanks, I think generally civilians should be inclined to believe them,” said Travis Sharp a fellow at the defense think tank, New American Security.

But guess which group of civilians isn’t inclined to agree with the generals on this point?

Congress.

To be exact, 173 House members – Democrats and Republicans – sent a letter April 20 to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, urging him to continue supporting their decision to produce more tanks.

That’s right. Lawmakers who frequently and loudly proclaim that presidents should listen to generals when it comes to battlefield decisions are refusing to take its own advice.

Even passing a budget bill would not cut spending by one cent. In order to cut spending, it has to be done through the appropriations bills, and the president has absolutely no say so in that. I welcome the demise of the Republican party, should it ever come. It has outlived its usefulness and deteriorated to the point of absurdity. I hope to see a split in the Democratic party, with the few remaining sane Republicans joining the considerable number of conservative Dems (the wingnuts here likely consider them “socialists”) as one party, and the more progressive dems adding the more sane real semi-socialists and envrionmentalists to their ranks. It would be a much healthier two party system, one open to rational compromises despite genuine differences.

Yes, absolutely it makes sense, Moderate.

A terrorist in our custody, like an enemy soldier in our custody, no longer poses a danger to anybody. They have been rendered harmless under the laws of war.

A terrorist NOT in our custody still poses a great danger, and we have the right of self-defense to end that danger by killing him if necessary.

During WWII, we had captured German soldiers held in rural areas of our own country practically walking around at will, while we were killing their colleagues on an industrial scale. Why? For exactly the reasons outlined above.

“Keep in mind he was in custody twice after Ft. Hood. Once in the US and once in Yemen.

Do you have a cite for that claim, Moderate? The Fort Hood shooting was 2009; my understanding is al Alwaki went underground in 2006-07.

Well, it’s a bit premature to concluded that, isn’t it? I mean, we just don’t know. Right?

No, we know. God was not willing to let him continue, because he is dead. Now, as to the outcome of the larger struggle ….?

In general, here’s the way we look at it, Jay (short version).

You guys are well on the way to destroying the place (and gleefullly so). The Republican establishment will do the same, just on a longer time frame. We have nothing to lose by endeavoring to get rid of the Republican establishment and trying to right the ship (pardon the pun) before it sinks. This is obviously a calculated risk, but necessary for the continuance of the democratic republic (or what remains of it). We owe it to our children and grandchildren.

As Rove would preach- all this nonsense can’t be possibly Rove and the big donor’s fault- Blame Romney and Ryan for the GOP’s failures. Can’t trust those g-d da-n Mormons just like Rove predicted.
