There’s a lot of unhappiness out there.
For example, the Wall Street types who financed the GOP’s 2012 campaign, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to the party as well as to the SuperPACs run by Karl Rove and others, are not a happy lot.
They are unhappy because they got little or nothing for their investment; they are unhappy with the GOP’s deep reluctance to come to the aid of Hurricane Sandy victims in the Northeast; and as the Manhattan elite, they are unhappy about financing a party that picks on their gay friends and their Muslim friends and doesn’t seem all that friendly to their black friends either.
Rove and his buddies in the GOP political establishment are also very, very unhappy. They are unhappy because their deep-pocket donors are unhappy. They’re unhappy because the deeply conservative base that they created and nurtured along the way to a permanent Republican majority has now slipped their leash and now acts as if they, not the Roves of the world, ought to run the party and set its goals and pick its candidates.
Such impertinence is not appreciated.
To regain control, Rove and his allies have created a new front group, the Conservative Victory Fund, to siphon still more money from donors. This time, the money will be used to finance a war with the great unwashed within their own party and promote more electable (read: moderate and malleable) candidates. In effect, they seek to put their creature back on its leash, where it can be more useful to them.
“There is a broad concern about having blown a significant number of races because the wrong candidates were selected,” as Steven J. Law, president of Rove’s American Crossroads, told the New York Times.
And of course, those who identify as champions of the GOP grassroots aren’t happy either. They aren’t in the mood to listen to condescending lectures from fancy-dan consultants who spent hundreds of millions of other people’s money and got nothing for it, and now want to blame their failure on conservatives for being too conservative.
Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, founded by former Sen. Jim DeMint, put it bluntly:
“The Conservative Defeat Project is yet another example of the Republican establishment’s hostility toward its conservative base. Rather than listening to the grassroots and working to advance their principles, the establishment has chosen to declare war on the party’s most loyal supporters. If they keep this up, the party will remain in the wilderness for decades to come.”
And as our friends over at RedState put it:
“American Crossroads is creating a new Super PAC to crush conservatives, destroy the tea party, and put a bunch of squishes in Republican leadership positions. …I dare say any candidate who gets this group’s support should be targeted for destruction by the conservative movement.”
Live by the sword, die by the sword, I suppose.

But now VAWA has expired — and House Republicans refuse to reauthorize it. Here’s the bottom line: Programs to protect women can’t be expanded or improved until VAWA is reauthorized:

So you really don’t have problem killing innocent children. Make up your mind.
If and when I say such, then address that. Otherwise, don’t put words in my mouth and try to debate what you “think” I said. Otherwise, I’ll treat you as any other far-Rightie here that has no common sense. You’re a pretty straight up person, and I have no problem defending my words, but it will be a cold day in hell before I defend yours.
@ 12:45
Well maybe your right. I thought I could because the constitution protected speech but maybe that right is suspended as soon as go to a foreign country with no extradition treaty.
That right to protected speech only goes so far. It is not unlimited and/or unregulated. I would think that you would already know and understand that.
So your argument is if someone like yourself was just waking to the store and there was a drive by and you got shot when you were 16 it would be your fault and should not care because I was not in the hood and you should have left.
No. That’s YOUR interpretation of what you THINK my argument is. My actual argument is don’t enter a country and hang out with people who have declared war with America and expect to be completely safe. I don’t care if you’re 16 or 60. I love my mom to death, but if she posted videos online that incited people to kill Americans, you wouldn’t find me within a 100 mile radius of her.
People who get caught in drive-bys like your scenario can’t help that. Now, if you go to Afghanistan and get blown away by an IED, why would you go to Afghanistan in the first place?
Finally, if you want to know my position on something, just ask and don’t assume. I have no problem with sharing my opinons as much as I can. I would much rather you debate what I say vs what you “think” I say.

It’s not even about that. I understand where Moderate Line is coming from with the Due Process argument. My issue with that is that, when a person purposefully affilates themself with a known enemy that considers itself at war with the US, then they forfeit that right to Due Process on the battlefield. If that person is apprehended away from the battlefield or theater of action, then they should be afforded due process.
The military isn’t a police force. They are built and trained for one purpose. Either we fight a war with terrorist with the military, as we are currently doing, or we go to a police action and use the CIA, FBI, and other police agencies. In my opinion, though, we can’t do both at the same time.

Well, I think the precedence has already been set for that question. If you’re in a car with 3 other people and cocaine is found in the car, all 4 people are getting arrested and charged with possession. If the amount is large, then it will be possession with intent to distribute. The only way you don’t get charged is if the person who owns the drugs openly admits that the drugs belong to them and nobody else is involved with them. Even then, everybody’s still getting steel bracelets at the time the drugs are found.
If we treat drug dealers that way, how do you think we’ll treat people who are actively trying to kill us or other Americans?

For example in some tough inner city communities after a rash of gun violence sometimes there is a protest or march against violence. After a short period of time the gun violence picks back up again. What part of that is not true cat?

Brosephus: ” If you’re in a car with 3 other people and cocaine is found in the car, all 4 people are getting arrested and charged with possession. If the amount is large, then it will be possession with intent to distribute. ”
All of that presupposes a process. In other words, the rule of law. At least on some basic level.
Those who are blown to bits by a missile, however, do not by definition enjoy the right to such a process.

Marty 2:56, collateral damage is an unfortunate outcome of achieving certain goals.
For example, they didn’t necessarily have to shoot the females in Osama’s bunker, but they were there knowing what he “does”, so they get whacked for the “greater good”.
Collateral damage will always be a cost of war.
Just depends on how we are going to continue to pursue them.

Paul — “They have stewardesses on cargo planes?!!?”
That depends.
Right about the time Flying Tiger cargo airlines got bought by FedEx, I flew on them to Japan and back (there was a teeny FedEx logo painted on the 747s tail). And yes, there were flight attendants on there.
I flew on a 7-seat Army C-12 several times. Once we did have a flight surgeon aboard who served coffee and donuts. Guess he was the flight attendant?
You can go long-haul on C-130s, C-17s, C-141s and C-5s. Flight attendants? Don’t know, never gone long-haul on them.
I’ve never been on one, but many popular aircraft types can be ordered as “combis” by the airlines; these are a combined cargo-passenger aircraft. I know that 737s and 747s can be delivered this way, and French ATRs can, too (Delta still flies some ATRs on short routes).

Can you direct me to some credible source that clarifies the number of children and seniors who starve to death or otherwise have no access to our various social nets?
Of course, many who live in the streets who suffer from addiction diseases and any number of mental illnesses when the safety net proceeds are not put toward food, that is a real problem. Other than that or criminal intent, I haven’t been able to find credible census or other data to suggest this is as big a deal as you are suggesting.

I don’t recall terrorists observing such “time out” rules either. I’m not saying that I outright agree with such a tactic, but war is war. When you espouse war against someone, you can’t call time outs later on until you decide to end your hostilities completely or negotiate a cease fire. Something tells me that AQ and it’s affiliates are not interested in any cease fire negotiations.

It’s one thing for Bush or Obama to order drone attacks. It would be another thing for them to personally pick the targets and push the buttons.
Obviously, civilians WERE killed on many of the drone strikes ordered by Bush. Liberals said nothing because they knew then, as we still know now, that terrorists would purposely hide among them.
Libs did the right thing and said nothing.
Cons, thinking only of their ideology and Party, trash Obama every chance they get.

If one accepts the war on terror (or whatever title one wants to use) is a war then rules of war apply. “Due process” is not a concept we’ve extended to the battlefield. As I read your scenario, a person like al-Awlaki would have to have a warrant issued for his apprehension, military couldn’t do it, law enforcement would, he’d have to be Mirandized, brought to trial within certain timelines, etc.
To put it in terms many of a certain era on this blog would understand.
You’re with 0311 and Recon and a few others on patrol in Vietnam. You see ahead of you a group on NVA coming right at you with an American in black pajamas and an NVA helmet walking point, carrying AK. According to what I’ve read of your posts, the Marines would have to withhold fire on the American and accord him due process of criminal law.
You would be incorrect on my position. The two scenarios given are not even related. In one case you have to make a decision in the moment to decided whither this person is a hostile. The other is a specific attack on an individual. When the police go after a criminal and the criminal poses a physical threat the police have the right to take what measures are necessary to take him out. Let’s say you capture the American in the raid without killing him. What would you do at that point. Prisoners of war have certain rights but the capture prisoner could be tried for treason.
Also, I did not see where you answered my earlier question of ” the guy in the bunker, whom the authorities determined posed an imminent threat to the little boy, whose capture they felt was infeasible, so the authorities struck according to current legal practices: was that guy an American citizen killed without due process?
I did not see your earlier statement. No. Again. Do process does not mean authorities do not have the ability to react to an imminent threat.
Lets keep some important facts in mind. This guy was so dangerous that in 2002 we had him in custody for passport fraud and released him. Also, he was captured by the Yemen’s in 2006. So you have to factor in that he was in custody twice and released.

Once again for the reading challenged….
I am not condoning targeting and killing of innocent civilians. I seriously doubt that members of AQ are going all over the place preaching hatred and death to the US and coming home and acting like Mr. Cleaver without a single person at home knowing what he’s doing. If we’re going to use drone strikes, then I agree that we need to have better intelligence on who and what we’re hitting. If and when AQ, the Taliban, and anybody else killing our soldiers drop their arms, we should immediately cease any hostile actions towards them.
Cmon BRO, most of these folks have no idea they are in a theatre of war or what a theatre of war is
In 2009, there were Afghani citizens who had never heard of the 9/11 attacks. Once again, Donald Rumsfeld could have and should have used the air force to beat the training camps into powder. We did not have to put boots on the ground to disrupt the terrorist networks. We’re never going to get rid of them, and the continued presence in Afghanistan is pretty much proof of that.

As of 2009, there were almost 1 million seniors in the U.S. who go hungry because they cannot afford to buy food. Another 5 million seniors in the U.S. faced the threat of hunger. In one of the world’s richest nations, no older American should be going hungry. However instead, in recent years, hunger rates have more than doubled for poor seniors in the country, and it is likely to get worse as the older population is the fastest growing cohort of the U.S. population.

By the way, it’s interesting to note that there’s probably been more commentary here today on the morality of drones and the security/military industrial complex than all the previous days put together.
How to explain it?
Could it be that as the GOP coalition undergoes more and more strain, this is freeing up previously marginalized right-leaning libertarian sentiments to be voiced much more freely, sometimes even after having been marginalized in the minds of the very same people?
If that’s indicative of a larger trend, this could get interesting indeed.

A caucasian walking point in an NVA column carrying a weapon… is he a hostile?
You’re stretching credulity here.
“Let’s say you capture the American in the raid without killing him”
Big, big difference between engaging a person on the battlefield and having custody of a disarmed person. But that was never a factor in either situation.
2002? 2006? al-Awlaki was killed in 2011. There’s a big gap there.
Still haven’t seen where you’ve clearly stated what due process is in the al-Awlaki scenario.
And, you have not demonstrated that the actions of the Bush and Obama Administrations did not follow due process, either in the development of the process or in how it is carried out.
