On Fox News, NRA’s Wayne LaPierre gets skewered

What happened when NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Fox News’ Chris Wallace debated gun control this morning?

Let’s just say that if the Super Bowl is this one-sided, millions of TV sets will be turned off by halftime.

Also, in another tragic case that casts doubt on the usefulness of guns as a self-defense measure, former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle was shot and killed yesterday evening at a gun range in Texas. Kyle came to national fame as a sniper who claimed more than 150 kills, supposedly making him the most prolific sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle wrote a best-selling book, “American Sniper,” about his experience and parlayed his fame into a regular spot on the reality show “Stars Earn Stripes.”

He leaves a wife and two children.

UPDATE: I’ve dealt with this several times in the comments below, but let me post it here as well. Yes, the circumstances of Kyle’s death suggest that he was given no real chance by his killer to defend himself. But the sad truth is, that’s almost always the case anyway. The good guy almost never gets the drop on the bad guy; the Keith Ratliff murder here in Georgia is another example of that reality.

In almost every case, the person who draws the weapon first has an overwhelming advantage, and most of the time the person who pulls first is the criminal. If you’re getting robbed at gunpoint on the street, for example, having a concealed weapon in your shoulder holster does you no good at all, and if it tempts you to try something stupid, it could end up getting you and others killed.

Let’s review the hard data, shall we? Each year, the FBI reports, some 200 justifiable homicides are committed with a firearm. That’s a tiny, tiny number, given the estimated 300 million firearms in circulation. That’s one justifiable homicide for each 1.5 million firearms. That’s the basis on which these fantasies are built. (And for the record, I recognize and support the constitutional right to possess firearms for home defense, etc.)

On the other hand, some 10,000 people are murdered each year with a firearm.

You either support law-abiding citizens RIGHT to own firearms alongside law enforcement OR you support the use of force (arms) of the government to take away arms and be the only ones to have them.

You’re either a cowboy or an Indian?

If fully automatic AK-47’s legally went on sale, gun stores would be jammed.

If any and all weapons, no matter what, could legally be sold, gun nuts would bankrupct themselves builing up their arsenal against the perceived Govt. “takeover”.

And, yes, most of them would think this was perfectly legal under the 2nd ammendment.

Funny, in a pathetic way. The same Govt. that allows the sale of assualt rifes, is, at the same time, out to get them.

Can’t we just move on from all this jabbering about the “right to bear arms?” It’s guaranteed in the Second Amendment. Just consider it an ‘individual’s right to choose’. It didn’t take a Supreme Court decision to give us this ‘right to choose’. Gun owners don’t even petition the government for taxpayer funded ammunition. Maybe they should.

“Figures collected by Syracuse University’s TRAC project, the authority on prosecutions from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, shows that the administration has reduced the focus on gun crimes and instead steered prosecutors and investigators to drug crimes.

Gun prosecutions peaked at 10,937 under Bush in 2004. A current TRAC report shows that the Obama administration is prosecuting about 6,000 weapons cases.

According to an October 2011 TRAC report, “There also has been a shifting emphasis towards drug-related investigations. Since ATF-referred prosecutions peaked in FY 2005, the number of weapons prosecutions actually has fallen by 32 percent, a much higher rate than for ATF prosecutions overall. Making up the difference has been the growing number of drug cases, up by 26 percent during the same period.”

In 2011, the Obama gun prosecutions hit a low for the decade, but there has been a slight uptick in prosecutions this year, said another TRAC report.”

Repost from page two since no one seemed to notice that existing laws are not being enforced.

If we are enforcing the current laws on the books (and this is what Wayne was saying) in cities like Chicago then we would not have to talk about “infringing” on the rights of the American people. Current laws on the books that are either not being enforced at all or are barely being enforced:

I. POSSESSION OF A FIREARM OR AMMUNITION BY A PROHIBITED
PERSON:
18 USC § 922(g) & (n). Punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. May receive
minimum sentence of 15 years without parole if offender has three or more prior
convictions for a felony crime of violence (e.g. burglary, robbery, assault, possession
of offensive weapons) and/or drug trafficking felony

USE, CARRY OR POSSESS A FIREARM IN RELATION TO OR IN
FURTHERANCE OF A DRUG FELONY OR A FEDERAL CRIME OF
VIOLENCE:
18 USC § 924(c). Punishment ranges from at least 5 years up to life imprisonment,
without parole, or death if death results from use of firearm. Sentence must be
served consecutive to any other sentence. Mandatory minimum sentence increases
depending upon: the type of firearm involved (sawed-off gun, silencer, etc.);
whether more than one offense was committed; and whether gun was simply
possessed or was brandished or discharged.

STOLEN FIREARM, AMMUNITION OR EXPLOSIVE:
18 USC §§842(h); 922(i), (j) & (u). Punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.
A. May not receive, possess, conceal, store, pledge or accept as security for a loan, barter, sell or
ship or transport across a state line any stolen firearm, ammunition or explosive.
B. May not steal or unlawfully take or carry away a firearm from the person or premises of a
firearms licensee.

Jay—

lets go ahead and use your numbers of 200 justifiable homicides per 10000 gun deaths as the only relavent data in firearms preventing crime. You say that is an insignificant amount. Statistically, you would be correct. Why don’t you ask those 200 people that are still alive if their life is insignificant. The problem is that no gun ban, AWB,etc. would do a ting to gun violence statistics. The problem that you liberals don’t understand is that there is no utopia where guns will never exist…That is not an arguable point. Once you start from there, taking firearms out of “good guys” hands can only be bad. The million dollar question is how do we keep them out of bad guys hands while not infringing on “good guys” rights…I think a universal background check under the correct definitions is a good place to start..

Nothing will be solved and more killing will be as killing as usual in all cities of low life druggies and criminals that get weapons other then gun stores and gun dealers. Now, the recent SCOTUS decision in Heller said their could be “reasonable” restrictions and restricting fully automatic guns could be considered “reasonable” to a great deal of the American people.

I do not see how this is an additional burden. If the local police pick up a probation person, parolee or arrest someone committing a felony while with a gun then you hold the person and call the Feds for pickup. This keeps the person out of the state system and puts them in the Federal system where there is more truth in sentencing guidelines.

Lemme guess, you never served in the military, right? The armed forces take an oath to defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, both foreign and domestic. If an American citizen does not wish to be targeted, then they should not become an enemy of the Constitution. It’s just that simple.

Thats called a legitimate news interview. Something MSNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, and all the other liberal ZERO apologists could learn about. When liberals go on their favorite news shows its a lovefest. Nice to see a radical like bookman pointing out a REAL news service. Good job Fox News. And I fully support the NRA. Too bad bookmans favorite news orgs do not have the same standards as FNC. Instead liberals slobber all over each other.

Jay is another clueless “journalist” for the AJC. He makes Rick Badie look like Walter Cronkite.

He keeps clinging to his “200 justifiable homicides per year” as if only a crime deterred with a firearm has to involve a homicide”. He should be including the numberous crimes that were stopped because a firearm was present.

In reality gun crime has been declining across the US for the past decade.. And oddly enough, the area where it is highest have some of the toughest gun control laws in the US (Chicago and Washington DC). It has also dropped in areas where conceal and carry is allowed.

When you breakdown the gun related murders in the US, you find that a large majority are commited with illegaly purchased guns. Jay in his infinite wisdom seems to think that by passing more laws, the criminals will suddenly start following despite all evidence to the contrary.

And the AJC wonders why their circulation keeps plummeting. It’s because it has a staff that is more interested in earning their Obama kneepads instead of actually practicing real journalism.

I do not see how this is an additional burden.

Of course you don’t. You’re not a cop either or work in law enforcement, right?

What are these additional laws that Obama is suggesting all about?

What additional laws? You do know the difference between an Executive Action and a law, right? Do we need to break out the Schoolhouse Rock video tonight?

http://nation.foxnews.com/gun-control/2013/01/16/obamas-23-executive-actions-guns

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Out of that entire list, numbers 5 and 9 are probably the only two that would need any kind of legislation. So, all these additional laws are likely 2 laws. However, I know you far righties consider that as 10 laws too many.

Wayne LaPierre was SLOBBERING and STRUTTING.

The gun cult has created the myth that by owning a gun, you are made safer.

The CDC proved that was a lie years ago. That’s why the NRA and other gun cult members rely on dramatic stories.

They don’t like statistics.

How many times does someone produce a weapons to stop a crime?
I know of several incidents where the would-be victim merely showed his weapons and the criminal decided to go elsewhere.
Those incidents are rarely reported or counted.

Statistically, if you are unarmed, the odds of being shot by an armed robber are almost nil.

If you are in a raging gunfight with someone at close range, the odds of you being shot are about 50 percent.

The list you provided was the executive orders Obama posted. What about the actual laws he wants Congress to pass? You know assault weapons ban, 10 round max magazines and universal background checks. I can see you Feds now enforcing the 10 round mag max. What are you going to do walk up to a person carrying and telling them to pull their mag out and count the bullets?
