The first time I heard this song, it came on in the background as I was working on a writing project. Something about it stopped me in my tracks and made me set aside my work and pay much closer attention to it.
The tune has a sweet, haunting quality, enhanced by Bonnie Prince Billy’s gentle delivery. It’ll get in your head pretty quickly. But on the second and third hearing, it’s the intelligence, humanity and brutal honesty of Will Oldham’s lyric that sets it apart from most of what pop music has to offer:
“Well, you’re my friend, (that’s what you told me)
And can you see (what’s inside of me)
Many times we’ve been out drinking
And many times we’ve shared our thoughts
But did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got
Well you know I have a love, a love for everyone I know
And you know I have a drive to live I won’t let go
But could you see its opposition comes arising up sometimes
That its dreadful antiposition comes blacking in my mind
And then I see a darkness
And then I see a darkness
And then I see a darkness
And then I see a darkness
And did you know how much I love you
Is a hope that somehow you, you
Can save me from this darkness
Well I hope that someday buddy
We have peace in our lives
Together or apart
Alone or with our wives
And we can stop our whoring
And pull the smiles inside
And light it up forever
And never go to sleep
My best unbeaten brother
This isn’t all I see
Oh no, I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
And did you know how much I love you
Is a hope that somehow you, you
Can save me from this darkness.”
Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy was once described as an “Appalachian post-punk solipsist,” which I guess is some fancy-dan way of saying the man is a damn fine songwriter.

Thanks Joseph…A great feel-good song.
I don’t understand how somepeople like be governed.
To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be governed is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality.
I personally want something else.

josef, saw Petty at the Fox many years ago as opening act for the Kinks. As I was already a huge fan of both it has to be one of the most memorable of the many concerts I have ever attended. And I think Blondie may have been on the bill as well. Those were “heady” days, to say the least. If a band can reproduce music live onstage that is as good or better than the recorded version, that has always been a sign of whether real talent is involved. And both the Kinks and Petty have proven me to be right.

Depression seems to be the normal state of being today for more and more people. And why not? Many may fool themselves but the reality of the human condition is ever present in the thinking people, no matter the political party. Of course, gladly, there aren’t that many thinking people left nowadays which may be another reason to be depressed. But at least the dullards won’t know what is going on until it slaps them in the face.

Like fertilizer to the plant, depression can be useful if you know what to do with it, like, you know, reach toward the light. It’s all about love, my friend, and learning to see God (the unlimited real you) in everyone.
Meanwhile, there’s always great music to keep us going, and thanks for the song. Sooooo here’s Mr. John Lee Hooker (again). For some reason, I can’t get enough of this great blues man these days, and I’ve been looking for a best reason to play this one for quite awhile now! So thanks again, sir.

Forever I had wanted to see High Chaparall – a great memory from my childhood — and they were showing it the other day – two episodes back-to-back!
On…ummm…”the Inspiration Network”??
I was thinking, no no no, Manolito spends every episode trying to get into the Hispanic women’s pants” and then I thought “Ahhh, yes, Inspiration!” So, it all makes sense. And the shows were both very good.
And, get this, there is a High Chaparall THEME PARK in Sweden that’s been going since the late 60’s!!
WTF?
So of course I had to see if they had a restaurant and they did. so I had to check the menu, which I did.
Mixed in with the ribs, the steak, the pork loins, and chicken wings they have schnitzel….oh yeah….pack up the family, baby, we are going to Sweden…

It’s regrettable for our political system and for the people who serve our government in very dangerous, difficult circumstances.”
At the same time, Clinton said she refused to be “discouraged by the fact that they are never going to accept the facts and the limitations of the facts.” She added that “you have to get up every day and work to do best you can and communicate that to the vast majority of fair-minded Americans whether they’re in Congress, in the press or in the public.”

Ok– google is my friend I found it. AND it was right here in Georgia. What is the south coming to? Are white people THAT damn scared of anything and everything that doesn’t look like them? This is pitiful and sad.
Gandy Cardenas says he and three friends were picking up another friend , Yelimay Garcia, to go ice skating on Saturday night, but ended up at the wrong house on Hillcrest Drive in Lilburn.
When they pulled into the driveway, they say Sailors, the homeowner, came out with a gun.
“He didn’t talk to them, he just started shooting,” Cardenas said through a translator. “The first shot was in the air.”
The teens say after Sailors fired that one shot into the air, the driver got scared and tried to turn around. That’s when Sailors allegedly fired the second shot, killing their friend.
Police took the other three who were in the car to the police station and questioned them overnight. Authorities say they then had enough evidence to arrest Sailors and charge him with murder.
Garcia, who has only been in the country for a few months, can’t understand how any of this could have happened.
“That means that you cannot come to a house and be confused about it? And somebody will come out and say, ‘Hello, may I help you? What are you doing here?’ And you start shooting like a maniac,” Garcia said through a translator.

You have to ask after seeing the mass coronary the Republican party and its constituency suffered upon hearing that Obama won, AGAIN, even though their unskewed data showed Rove and Co. otherwise. Maybe, just maybe, we’re getting through to SOME of them. I mean, just the other day there were about 25 of the conned on this very blog denigrating the NY Conned for asking for Federal Assistance after their hurricane.
Now that a Class V tornado hit northern georgia and darn near devastated a whole town, it seems that some of them have suddenly FOUND their christian spirit and the power of hope and forgiveness AND the power of Federal aid.
I think it was a come to Jesus moment for the Georgia conned — they saw the light and discovered the power of some Federal dollars. Can I get an Amen.

The gop are costing us hundreds of billions in easing but they have no idea what they are doing.
They don’t CARE. The only thing they care about are the rewards they’re getting NOW. They don’t care about tomorrow, or their children or anything else.
If they really DID care about the future and their children’s children’s future, then they wouldn’t DENY global warming. They wouldn’t PRETEND that they are not actively trying to subvert the US Constitution, (all in the name of PROFIT; no matter what they say); or pretend that they’re not killing THOUSANDS by their dogmatic refusal to even consider something as important as GUN CONTROL.
They pretend to be christians, if they really were — then they’d know that according to Jesus, a rich man is as likely to get into heaven as a camel is to go through the eye of a needle.
They’d know that all the accumulations of their riches on EARTH won’t get them anywhere near heaven.

If you look at the angle of Obama shooting then it is clear to anyone with an ounce of commonsense that he was NOT shooting skeet. Funny that you made that statement. I ran across this article a few days ago when it was first published.
http://www.theroot.com/views/fear-black-gun-owner
Seems as though the NRA use to help write gun control legislation until around the time when a certain group began to express their 2nd Amendment rights. I honestly don’t know if that’s part of the reason the NRA shifted positions or not, and frankly I don’t care. If I were twisted and evil, I’d run an experiment to see by advising every single legal Black man to begin buying up rifles like they were needed every day to breathe.

I’m with you on that. I never feared any of my neighbors. Even when I saw white sheets, I didn’t cower in fear. I simply remained aware of my surroundings. I don’t understand this culture of fear that’s engulfing this country nowadays. I shot my first gun before I hit double digit age, and I took a few safety courses as well. I love shooting guns, but I still fail to see the need for a 30 round magazine. If you need that many rounds for hunting and/or home protection, then you are a piss poor shooter who needs target practice more than anything else.

Not necessarily. If the clays are being thrown low and moving away from him, then the angle of fire is not going to be high. You’re looking at the most private of all ranges with little worry about accidentally hitting someone or something nearby. Also, if the shooting area is on a hill with the range going downhill, then one can throw clays straight out. I don’t know how that range is set up, but if you look at the links I posted, JFK and Jackie are shooting at almost the same exact angle.

I posted photos and video of people using the Camp David range. Compare their shooting angles with Obama’s and decide whether he was shooting skeet or just firing off a round for a photo op.
