It is a complicated thing……..wtf are we supposed to do; tell everybody “Come on in?” People fire salvos at Arizona from a distance. They have not had to deal with the problem that a state that borders Mexico has, so they become a bunch of armchair Monday morning QB’s. Reminds me of upper New Englanders from 99+% white enclaves giving race-relation advice. Part of the solution could be actual dialouge with those on the front lines who deal with this mess daily! This is a complicated issue, and some real ground rules need to be established.

You take a group with this many members, another group with that many members, a segment who cares strongly about this, another segment who scares strongly about that, you add them all up, alienate them all

And you’re the eternal minority party.

I’ll say it again: the fact Democrats are pushing this (realizing they need Republican support to get it passed) and realizing it (in the smaller sense) will benefit a group already closely aligned with Democrats and passing this will pave the way for a return of many to the Republican fold

shows how, on this issue, Democrats are willing to put the good of the country above political advantage.

For me, we have taken important issues like immigration reform and framed it in strictly political terms. Either Dem or Rep. Immigration is just good public policy no matter what your political stripes.

I get tired of people trying to shout down one good idea after another. You know this whole country, economy and lifestyle we enjoy has always been “fluid” as in “trail and error”…you try something, you tweak it if its not working, or scrap it if its a failure. Sorry, but to just stick your head in the sand on important issues like immigration, health care, gun safety, and job creation and just see who can shout “You suck” the loudest does NOT move the country forward.

We all have to keep an open mind about these things. And that is NOT in any fashion a monopoly of any political leanings. It reminds me of my favorite bumper sticker: “Minds are like parachutes, they only function when they are open!”

I assure you, most of us want to see a viable republican party offering real solutions, rather than the current everr-shrinking, insular party of retrenchment we see today.

The perception you refer to above is reinforced by the fact that the republicans refer to anybody who is not far-far-right by the derisive term “RINO,” and seem to give short-shrift to the less fortunate in out society, which is made up largely of non-”Wasp men.”

They scare Latinos into not voting for them by creating policies like SB1070, marginalizing their vote, and “self-deportation”. Republicans/Conservatives have made Hispanics parallel to blacks in their eyes: the scapegoats for anything wrong….rather than looking at themselves and their racist paradigms.

Jim Crow Laws – enacted by democrats
Gun Control Laws post Civil War – enacted by democrats
Affirmative Action hinders and insults minorities as it tells them you aren’t good enough to get a job or school on your own merits…your skin color matters more. If someone hired me just because of my skin color I’d be insulted.

The ERA was not and is still not needed as those protections are already in the Constitution.

So called gay rights is a morality issue and shouldn’t be linked to Civil Rights. What next, calls to allow grown men to have sex with underage boys? Is that a civil right??

Latino issue…..democrats are pandering to Latinos by saying we don’t care if you broke the law….we’ll make you citizens so you vote for us. It’s just another massive vote buying scheme by the dems.

The message amnesty sends is this: The U.S. will not enforce it’s own laws or protect it’s border. If you go there, a certain political party will pander to you if you vote for them.

If Latino immigrants, who claim to love this country so much, want to be Americans do the following:
1) Go through the naturalization process like every other immigrant has done
2) Learn English
3) Learn American culture and leave the old country behind like so many other immigrants have done

This is not a “latino” issue exclusively..it is an immigration issue, and more specifically could be called an illegal immigrant issue… Finally, it is to be understood that some republicans have stances regarding , say abortion because they believe in the sanctity of the unborn, that is a moral issue to them. They are not desirous of being all and inclusive than say, the most liberal. It is not what they are and they are perfectly fine with it. Furternore they can field respectable candidates that can win. Not eery time. not in every local..I do not agree with several of the far right positions and I don’t have to I have to decide if either party represents the majority of my philosophy,like rubio…Voting may be an absolute but the thinking is in relative terms. There is no overwhelming majority for either party at this point, small tweaks on each side can make absolute differences. It would be wise for both parties to realize that.

I have heard Rubio explain a summary of his proposal and found nothing objectionable.

The proposal is at this point just that, a proposal. It is not yet a bill.

There are several details to work out foremost being covering newly green carded immigrants under Obamacare. There is no money to do that and we should not borrow more money to do so.

My guess is, if the proposal blows up it will not be due to Republicans but instead the Liberals who just can’t do enough for others to satisfy theiry bleeding hearts.

No..the question you should be asking is: Why CHANGE the ID requirements?? No one has an issue with showing identification to vote….but the ID requirements that I used to REGISTER to vote should be the same that I use TO VOTE!!

I find it amusing how Bookman loves to fortify his argument with occasional snippets of GOP alliance. This time he pounces all over the fact that Marco Rubio is the face of de facto amnesty. Well, here’s a news bulletin for you, Mr. Bookman…most Republicans are not on board with Sen. Rubio concerning this issue.

It’s also amusing to see how Mr. Bookman relies on the polling results of a liberal source like CBS. This is similar in asking a fox to guard a chicken coop. It’s stupid in its concept and predictable in its conclusion. 71%??….please! I hate to use the typical Bookman response to any counter point, but this CBS poll is a fabrication and bunch of outright lies.

Illegal immigration is what it is. It’s illegal and against the laws of this country, pure and simple. Amnesty or de facto amnesty is what it is; something that is a give-away. Amend the law that stands in its way if you must have a give-away program.

Hispanic countries do not have the benefits that this country provides to its citizens or its illegal aliens. Since we have not enforced the immigration laws, we have a problem. When you hand out candy to children you will have more and more children looking for candy. When Democrats go slack on the law of immigration, the fore gone conclusion will be more and more Hispanic votes. This is the low road tactic used by the low road Democrat Party in all its glory. The same tactic used with no taxes for the “middle class”. The same tactic used with entitlements. The same tactic with affirmative action. The same tactic with earned income credit. The same tactic with unemployment income extensions. You and I know that most people will vote for a Santa Claus Party rather than a political party that insists on self-reliance, hard work, and fair play. When you Democrats create a nation of 47% non-paying citizens in the “revenue” department belonging to the Santa Claus Party, it is a fore gone conclusion that you Democrats would want to embrace amnesty. Ronald Reagan opted for amnesty like Marco Rubio and Hispanics did not embrace the Republican Party. You know why? Hispanics, just like children, would rather belong to and vote for the Santa Claus Party.

Heck.let’s just let everybody(illegals) in and pay for their babies to be born too, there’s plenty of work to go around here in the good ole USA and plenty of tax(govt.) resources to pay for their needs while hard working folk have to pay for their own. Not another country like us in the world. Come one come all. When I go for a walk at my local park I see black and white families with 1-2 kids on avg. But when I see Latinos they have 4-5 kids on avg. Welcome to the new Mexico (gangs and all). Soon there will be so many impoverished people that there is no way our govt will be able to sustain all the entitlements. Does anyone hear the sound of the coming crash? But at least they will keep the Dems in power. After all, that’s all that matters right?

You said so much that I have to address it…….here goes!

It’s not a problem that there are black conservatives…but the problem is that they are espousing the idiom that “they did it on their own”….when it is further from the truth !! We ALL had help in making it to the point where we are today…..and the preponderance of those black conservatives USED government programs like Affirmative Action and education loans and grants to get to where they are! Affirmative Action has always been mischaracterized by conservatives as a “quota”….Affirmative Action is used to grant ACCESS to the same things that were heretofore denied to minorities — employment, education, et. al..If CONSERVATIVES would listen more to people like Colin Powell, you’d get a better picture!! Remember: Colin Powell achieved his position in government when Ronald Reagan stated that there was NO black candidates on the list for National Security Advisor…that was AFFIRMATIVE ACTION (affirmative meaning “positive”)………also…Colin Powell got BOOED at the Republican National Convention because he advocated Affirmative Action……..

2) “I think if the African American community honestly would look around at the impact liberalism has made in the community they would be up in arms.” Liberalism gave black people the right to vote, constitutional protections equal to the majority, access to education and employment……there’s a lot more POSITIVES than negatives. Granted, the breakdown of the family structure encompasses a lot…primarily economics….but that’s an aspect that not only affects blacks…but the preponderance of people on assistance…primarily, the largest group — white Americans in Appalachia!!

3) “they’re told standardized tests are discriminatory that’s why you don’t do well….. ” 1) WHO creates the standards!?? It’s well known that education standards differ throughout the various communities….I’m willing to state that education standards differ in North Fulton and Cobb than in South Fulton……Speaking as a college-educated person, I know that there are some basic aspects of standardized testing that are common across curricula…but there are ARE differences that many minorities are not exposed to……….

4) “blacks are incarcerated at a higher percentage than other racial groups….” Primarily, the law FOCUSES on minorities…..and harsher judgments are given to minorities than Caucasians!!

5) “what about Asians? if there is such bias why are Asians doing so well in this country?” The cultural differences between Asians and the rest of Americans speaks volumes. Asians are more homogeneous…and their culture focuses on LONG-TERM results rather than immediacy!! Americans focus on short-term success…..and what is the bellwether of said success is what many Caucasians state success is……..Asians have also suffered their share of discrimination by all cultures…even among themselves…..but it’s their homogeneity that allows them to build upon their successes.

That’s a start…………..

Which LEVELS are you referring…..

math — Basic Math, Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calculus, Differential Equations? I know that when I took the SAT, I could cover up to trig with no problem, but there were Calculus and Diff Equations on it..and I didn’t get that exposure until COLLEGE!! I’m willing to state that there are more college prep and advanced (AP) courses offered in North Fulton……
science – Basic, Biology, Chemistry, Physics…..many on the Southside don’t have instructors to cover the AP courses…so they are not exposed to the same course options…..
english — Basic Composition, maybe……..but what about Creative Writing, English Lit?
history — What levels…American, World, European? What about the negating of certain aspects of history……..

Only when you CHANGE the ID requirements!! As I asked you before….should not the same ID that I used to REGISTER to vote be the same as the ID I use TO VOTE?? What Democrats objected to was the changing of ID requirements by Republicans in an attempt to disenfranchise minority voters!! There was a 92-year old registered voter in Tennessee who had voted in previous elections who wasn’t allowed to vote because she could get a photo ID…because she couldn’t get a copy of her BIRTH CERTIFICATE…but had enough alternate ID forms to establish her identity…that she had used to register to vote!! Many Democrats see these ID tactics as another methodology to depress the minority vote…..and remember what the State Senator in Pennsylvania stated: “..passing the ID law will allow Pennsylvania to go for Romney…”…but that didn’t work, did it???

I call B.S on the Tenn story and the whole ID thing.

From the Tenn S.o.S…nothing mentioned about the birth certificate…..maybe you’re thinking about Obama.

Dorothy Cooper is 96 but she can remember only one election when she’s been eligible to vote but hasn’t.

The retired domestic worker was born in a small North Georgia town before women had the right to vote. She began casting ballots in her 20s after moving to Chattanooga for work. She missed voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 because a move to Nashville prevented her from registering in time.

So when she learned last month at a community meeting that under a new state law she’d need a photo ID to vote next year, she talked with a volunteer about how to get to a state Driver Service Center to get her free ID. But when she got there Monday with an envelope full of documents, a clerk denied her request.

That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.

“But I didn’t have my marriage certificate,” Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.

Both Dem and Repub have done a pitiful job when it comes to allocating resources to “seal the border”. Not sure if it will ever be sealed, however a better job can be done. It wont be free. Those working for the US government along the US & Mexican should be commended for the job they do with the resources available to them.

With that said; you can seal that border with all the fences, surveillance and manpower you want; if US businesses continue to hire illegals, illegals will find a way to fill those jobs.

I did read the story….some idiot clerk made a mistake….the law according to the Secretary of State’s website mentions nothing about a birth certificate. Some clerk made a mistake….her right to vote was not taken away by the change in law.

Well, monty, I don’t doubt that there is compassion in your heart for the less fortunate. I suspect that to be true of many self-identifying American conservatives.

I’ll humbly suggest, however, that the kind of anecdotal evidence you provided in your post @ 11.28 needs to be tempered with useful metrics–that is, statistical information about economic mobility or lack thereof in other countries with social safety nets.

It’s ok to express concern about people you’ve seen who would benefit from better policies, and I take you at your word that you truly believe that we are somehow promoting dependence on government largess. I just find this short-sighted; I think the problems stem from poorly managed, grudgingly provided benefits that aren’t coupled with strong workers’ rights that ensure a secure economic existence in exchange from a typical workweek.

This is glossing over the details but hopefully you get my point.

It’s not that I don’t immigrants here, I just don’t those who came here illegally to “jump in line” in front of those choosing to do so legally. It simply is WRONG. What are we going to do next – give “amnesty” to criminals who break into peoples houses and steal things? In my opinion, they ought to (among other things) give Mexicans and Canadians the highest preference for immigration, allowing maybe 50% or more of those allowed into our country to come from our two allied and close neighbors. And get rid of the archaic rule that allows Cubans and others sanctuary upon setting foot on our land.

Regularization of immigration policy should be done or not done on its merits. On that I have some mixed feelings although it is apparent that something must be done because the status quo is not working. It should not be done on the basis of how people will vote. However, to the extent that some elements of the GOP see Hispanics as potential voters to be feared rather than courted, it essentially just reflects their own prejudices and lack of knowledge. I wish that Hispanics could be counted on as a monolithic vote for Democrats but history just does not back that up. W got almost 40% of the Hispanic vote and Hispanics in Florida have trended Republican for many years. Now, this last time around they almost all voted for Obama. But who should blame them after being so vilified in the Republican primary debates? Language like that used creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. At any rate, I view this as simply the continued lemming like march of the GOP into Whig Party irrelevancy.

We are not in the mountains, so the “slippery slopes” that you love to debate with will not work here.

What you are saying is not going to happen? It has zero chance regardless of who controls the House, Senate or WH.

To one of your overall points, I do however think that more enforcement and pressure needs to be placed on employers. They need to know that the government means business.

It boils down to supply and demand. If there is a demand for the illegal worker, there will be a supply.

I’m not saying that this current plan is the end all of end all because it is not, but we have to start somewhere with something feasible.

While there are certainly illegals here who are “gaming” the system via government assistance, etc, I see many people placing to much blame on the symptom not the source.

The main source of the problem is the hiring of illegals. The symptom is the illegals coming here.

As noted in an earlier post I am for increased border security, but it will only do so much if US business is willing to continue to hire illegals.

And as much as I’d like to see a gaggle of banksters breaking rocks in the hot sun, and I continue to cling to hope that I’ll live to see that day–I recognize that negative reinforcement is a teensy tiny part of any comprehensive solution to, well, anything.)

I agree in the main, though I hardly think people who violate the sovereignty of another nation should somehow be absolved as if the “Devil made them do it”. They KNOW they are doing wrong, but since there is virtually NO consequence, why desist? Why should they take it seriously if we don’t? If you have ever had children, then you will know that if you do not discipline them when they really screw up, you are teaching them it is alright to screw up. And you will lament the end result. Look at someone like Lindsey Lohan. It seems to me her parents might as well have put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger a long time ago:

Marco Rubio doesn’t exactly hold the torch for Latino immigrants. He was born in Miami of Cuban immigrants. Cubans have the unique “one foot” advantage that other illegal immigrants don’t have. Up until January of this year Marco Rubio was one of the most resistant congressmen to immigration reform. He’s showing us that he is nothing but a political opportunist. I don’t think he has the political capital to pull this off.

In addition to what the current administration is currently doing….

– Most parts of the border are already secure: Even with fewer people apprehended at the border, border agents now patrol every single mile of the border every day. The vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security, and there are 21,370 agents, along with six unmanned aircraft systems.

Actually, the GOP is wrong in it’s thoughts that it will modify the demographic trends. But Bookman is wrong that this attempt to convert illegal immigrants into a potential voting block isn’t the game afoot…it is—but (just like their effort to get imprisoned felons the vote; and opposing voter ID laws, or the absurd promotion of a fictional “war on women” based on free birth control) it is the Democrats exploiting the scenario for election result. Huge difference in a recess appointment and what Obama did that the appeals court said was unconstitutional. The President is not allowed to interpret when the legislative branch is in session or not in session. The legislator must officially recess before a President is allowed to make a recess appointment.

Do not tell me it is only because the Republicans would not approve his appointees or they were really in recess but were playing a game because the Republicans did the same thing the Dems did during the Bush Presidency. If Obama wants people approved then he must COMPROMISE and send people up that Republicans can actually vote for or at least not so radical that the Republicans have to block. Look at Kerry as an example. 1 day of hearings and he was confirmed by 94 votes.

President Obama has gone around Congress in as many ways as he can find. One way is by abusing the presidential power to make appointments to government positions during a supposed Senate recess—in an attempt to avoid having the Senate confirm the nominees.

Last week, a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals dealt quite a blow: It ruled that a number of President Obama’s “recess appointments” were invalid.

The judges issued an even broader ground for striking down the unconstitutional appointments, holding that President Obama could make valid recess appointments only during an intersession “recess” that occurs between annual sessions of Congress, and that recess appointments also cannot be made unless the position becomes vacant during the Senate’s valid intersession recess.

This brings up huge questions for all the unconstitutional appointees who have now been declared invalid—and the regulations they have created during their time in office.
There’s the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which had three members appointed in this way. Gaziano notes that “13 months’ worth of rulings, regulations, and other actions by the NLRB are now in question, because without the illegal recess appointments the NLRB lacked a quorum to act during all that time.”

And then there’s the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), whose director, Richard Cordray, was another of these invalid appointments. The bureau has been regulating away for the past year, but Gattuso writes that “the new rules adopted by the CFPB under Cordray will likely be invalidated.”

Lets add education to the freebie list! Parents that send their kids to public schools are also part of the freebie moocher class! That should bring the moocher class up to about 65% to 70% of the population.

Moocher: Someone that is getting something for FREE or not putting anything into the pot. Any parent that lives in a house/apartment/trailer/condo is paying for the education of their children because they are paying either directly through mortgage company or to the local county government or indirectly through rent property taxes.

Even the moochers that do not pay income taxes and get income based entitlements actually pay property taxes so they are not moochers in educating their children. Well, unless they are having their housing paid for totally by Section 8 and then they are moochers.

We really don’t know how much fraud there may be in voter registration by illegal immigrants. If they fraudulently obtained other key forms of documentation, then it would not be hard or a stretch to register to vote illegally. I am not aware this has ever been seriously investigated, as it would be hard to detect potential perpetrators from a list of names. There was a local TV investigative report in Florida last year that found some illegals voting (by their own admission even), but the elections officials indicated it would be hard to find them.

Prior to May 20011, Mexico’s immigration flows were regulated by the outdated and highly restrictive General Law of Population of 1970. However, on May 24, President Felipe Calderón signed into law a new and much more liberal Migration Law. The Mexican Senate and subsequently the House had unanimously approved the migration bill that led to this new law on February 24 and April 29t, respectively. Some of the most significant principles of this new law deal with the rights of migrants. The new law guarantees that foreigners and Mexican nationals will receive equal treatment under Mexican law. Under this principle all immigrants, regardless of status, are granted the right to access education and health services. Mechanism aimed at promoting family unity are now in place. Moreover, before the government takes action (e.g. deportation) with respect to migrant children and other vulnerable individuals (women, seniors, the handicapped and victims of crime) their specific needs must be prioritized and adequate services must be provided. Migrants are also granted judicial rights that they previously lacked, such as the right to due process.

And you would be wrong. I think many of the financial fraudsters should either have their asses sued off or spend some good amount of time in jail or both. The problem is that many of them are in a blue city in a blue state- NYC comes to mind as well as Chicago. Hard to prosecute them when many of them are bribing their way to freedom. Marc Rich comes to mind. Ya know who he is occupation???

If the GOP persists in the belief that the reason they are experiencing waning federal influence because slightly more than half the voters are a bunch of free-loading moochers who are addicted to freebies and handouts, I don’t think they are going to enjoy 2014 much.

Danny X just can’t wrap his little noggin around the idea that on things like SS and Medicare that the recipients paid into these programs their entire working lives- thus differentiating them from a moocher who doesn’t pay shiite.

Yeah. I read it. And keep in mind that Jay is writing from a partisan slanted view. I just want to know when people are going to get arrested since by definition a scam is fraud which is illegal. Just lemme know when we start arresting these tax credit scammers en masse.

Look before I leap… Are you of the belief that voter fraud was not a significant part of election? I do background checks and can tell you how difficult it is to simply check criminal histories on a hispanic. They have many AKA names that THEY have created and all name variations need to be checked. If you think that they aren’t also forging docs with various alias names to vote, you are naive and best think again. The push to not require voter ID was there for a reason and Obama knows this as well.
