In the weeks ahead, the Republican Party is going to have itself a fine debate over immigration, with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio more or less betting his presidential ambitions on winning the argument. If he can’t convince enough Republicans to join him, his de facto support for amnesty will become a cannon ball chained to his leg in the race for the 2016 GOP nomination.
Personally, I hope Rubio is successful, because his success would mean that we actually accomplish something and put this problem behind us. But I have serious doubts.
His fellow Republican senator, David Vitter of Louisiana, this week called Rubio’s stance on immigration “nuts” and “amazingly naive,” all the while expressing his enormous admiration for his Florida colleague. House Republicans, a good indicator of the sentiment of the GOP base, don’t seem ready at all to embrace the Rubio solution. The editors at National Review dismissed it as well this week in a piece headlined “A Pointless Amnesty”:
“Call it ‘regularization,’ call it a ‘path to citizenship,’ it amounts to precisely the same thing: a decision to set aside the law and to ignore its violation.”
The folks at National Review also argue that “the idea that an amnesty is going to put Latinos squarely in the GOP tent is a fantasy.” Framed in those terms, they’re right. There are no conceivable circumstances in which the Latino vote is going to end up “squarely in the GOP tent.” However, a cessation of active hostility might, just might, allow the party to compete for some of those votes in the future.
The realization that the Latino vote might not be a natural GOP constituency after all has become a popular theme on the right, but it reflects a typically narrow way of thinking about the issue. Its implications for the overall GOP brand are much broader.
In a new CBS poll released this week, 71 percent of Americans say they support allowing illegal immigrants to remain here, with 51 percent saying they would support a path to citizenship. Only 24 percent of Americans take the GOP position that those immigrants must somehow be required to return home.
In other words, the GOP’s political problem on this issue is not by any means limited to Hispanic Americans. The GOP position toward the Latino minority mirrors its historic animosity to gay rights, affirmative action, minority voting protections, the Equal Rights Amendment for women and similar issues.
Each of those groups listens to GOP rhetoric on the Latino issue and it hears a powerful reminder of GOP indifference to its own struggles. If the GOP ends up scuttling comprehensive immigration reform, those non-Latino voters will view it as confirmation that the Grand Old Party isn’t changing, and that it has every intention of being more old than grand.
And unfortunately, they will be right to think that way.

the ironic and funny thing
REPUBLICANS are automatically thinking that illegals and hispanics will vote democratically
DEMOCRATS expect that illegals and hispanics will vote democratically
there is no way to quantify that stance……….. once the hispanic voting population exceeds the african-american voting population………….. then the fireworks start………….
the scenarios of what will happen after that are numerous

“uhhh…democrats do have an issue with requiring people to show and id to vote.”
Only when you CHANGE the ID requirements!! As I asked you before….should not the same ID that I used to REGISTER to vote be the same as the ID I use TO VOTE?? What Democrats objected to was the changing of ID requirements by Republicans in an attempt to disenfranchise minority voters!! There was a 92-year old registered voter in Tennessee who had voted in previous elections who wasn’t allowed to vote because she could get a photo ID…because she couldn’t get a copy of her BIRTH CERTIFICATE…but had enough alternate ID forms to establish her identity…that she had used to register to vote!! Many Democrats see these ID tactics as another methodology to depress the minority vote…..and remember what the State Senator in Pennsylvania stated: “..passing the ID law will allow Pennsylvania to go for Romney…”…but that didn’t work, did it???
I call B.S on the Tenn story and the whole ID thing.
From the Tenn S.o.S…nothing mentioned about the birth certificate…..maybe you’re thinking about Obama.
Any of the following IDs may be used, even if expired:
•Tennessee drivers license with your photo
•United States Passport
•Photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security
•Photo ID issued by the federal or any state government
•United States Military photo ID
•State-issued handgun carry permit with your photo
What IDs are not acceptable?
College student IDs and photo IDs not issued by the federal or a state government are NOT acceptable.
Who is exempt?
•Voters who vote absentee by mail (view requirements here)
•Voters who are residents of a licensed nursing home or assisted living center and who vote at the facility
•Voters who are hospitalized
•Voters with a religious objection to being photographed
•Voters who are indigent and unable to obtain a photo ID without paying a fee
What if I registered by mail and am voting in my first election?
Federal law requires first time voters who register by mail to present one of the following:
•A current photo identification with voter’s name and photo OR
•If the photo identification is expired, the voter must also present one of the following: a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows the voter’s name and address.
If granny is 92 then she’s getting a SS check and she can vote absentee with no problems.
Do your homework before you mess with me.

Yes it is about new democrat voters! “I’ve always had to show my I.D. when I vote and I’m a white guy. Why shouldn’t everybody else have to show some form of appropriate picure ID is beyond utterly ridiculous. For every one person who may get disenfranchised there will be 100 who will get to vote illegally. Which is more fair?”
What would be FAIRER is that ALL 50 states follow Federal Law….
“The 2002 Federal Help America Vote Act requires any voter who registered by mail and who has not previously voted in a federal election to show current and valid photo identification or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter.”
Prior to the disenfranchisement efforts, voter could use photo ID…or any of the above stated OPTIONS to register to vote! As I’ve asked…..shouldn’t I be able to use the same ID that I REGISTERED with to VOTE???

Calling you on your statement……
96-year-old Chattanooga resident denied voting ID
Dorothy Cooper is 96 but she can remember only one election when she’s been eligible to vote but hasn’t.
The retired domestic worker was born in a small North Georgia town before women had the right to vote. She began casting ballots in her 20s after moving to Chattanooga for work. She missed voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 because a move to Nashville prevented her from registering in time.
So when she learned last month at a community meeting that under a new state law she’d need a photo ID to vote next year, she talked with a volunteer about how to get to a state Driver Service Center to get her free ID. But when she got there Monday with an envelope full of documents, a clerk denied her request.
That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.
“But I didn’t have my marriage certificate,” Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2011/oct/05/marriage-certificate-required-bureaucrat-tells/
When you change the ID requirements, you’re trying to disenfranchise voters…….

stands for decibels
I’m not against helping folks who are in need. I do it all the time. I’m against welfare as a system that just ends up enslaving generation after generation. It’s like a dope pusher giving out free crank to get people hooked and then they are perpetually theirs. Some can break free from the cycle but it is hard. Every day I see minorities where the young girls believe their greatest achievement is getting pregnant at an early age. Everyday I see young women where by the time they are in their early 20’s(the time they should be graduating from college) they have 3-4 kids by different “Daddys.” They dropped out of school, now they have 3-4 kids to take care of, not even a highschool diploma and a very restricted job market. The only job they qualify for (if they were lucky enough to get it)wouldn’t even pay for their child care. But, they know thy have the safety net of welfare(because momma has it and grandma had it). And they are comfortable with that. It’s a mindset that has been programmed into them partly because of the govt.(we’re there for you) and to a large degree with the break down of the family due to immorality.(drugs. violence, adultery, acoholism, incest, lack of male leadership, etc). I feel deeply for these young girls because all they know many times is what they experienced growing up.

YOU MEAN LIKE THE GUY CLINTON PARDONED — MARC RICH
GREAT EXAMPLE
Marc Rich, a fugitive who had fled the U.S. during his prosecution, was residing in Switzerland. Rich owed $48 million in taxes and was charged with 51 counts of tax fraud, was pardoned of tax evasion. He was required to pay a $100 million dollar fine and waive any use of the pardon as a defense against any future civil charges that were filed against him in the same case. Critics complained that Denise Rich, his former wife, had made substantial donations to both the Clinton library and to Mrs. Clinton’s senate campaign. According to Paul Volcker’s independent investigation of Iraqi Oil-for-Food kickback schemes, Marc Rich was a middleman for several suspect Iraqi oil deals involving over 4 million barrels (640,000 m3) of oil.[20] Longtime Clinton supporters and Democratic leaders such as former President Jimmy Carter, James Carville and Terry McAuliffe, were all critical of the Clinton pardon. Carter said the pardons were “disgraceful.”[21]

Barking frog: “Such hard work sitting back and letting the numbers in your portfolio reproduce. / so much so that it requires taxpayer assistance…”
And lots of banker assistance. Central, banker, assistance. That’s real important, too. Oh, and deregulation-happy legislators in your pocket. That can go along way too.

Both Dem and Repub have done a pitiful job when it comes to allocating resources to “seal the border”. Not sure if it will ever be sealed, however a better job can be done. It wont be free. Those working for the US government along the US & Mexican should be commended for the job they do with the resources available to them.
With that said; you can seal that border with all the fences, surveillance and manpower you want; if US businesses continue to hire illegals, illegals will find a way to fill those jobs.

Did you write that with a straight face? Why don’t you write a column on how the IRCA of 1986 “put this problem behind us”?

The bipartisan group led by Rubio make their recommendations contingent on border security. Their plan is reasonable and sound. Republicans, who are right to be suspicious about the border security principle, should nevertheless support Rubio on this. In a whiplash reaction, Obama squandered money and enlarged once again his big old carbon footprint by immediately flying across the country to announce Rubio’s plan as his own while being careful to imply that not all of the bipartisan plan (cue border security ) could be implemented. He would rather destroy the republicans than give the illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

We are not Mexico. They have broken our law by being here. They have no skills and I am very tired of reading that in order to get a job in America you must speak Spanish. WHY? When did we turn into Mexico. We will you know. 11 million now, 11 million future demanding their rights. There is no security here and there never will be. You know I have NOT heard one word yet about JOBS FOR AMERICANS. When will this President and our representatives put Americans first? Will they ever put AMERICANS first? Not unless you force them to! Its all about keeping people under their control and keeping you down. I bet it feels real good to these Americans who have lost their jobs and their homes to hear that Obama wants to make 11 million illegals legal. That’s his top priority. Makes me feel real good, can tell you that.

“In a new CBS poll released this week, 71 percent of Americans say they support allowing illegal immigrants to remain here, with 51 percent saying they would support a path to citizenship. Only 24 percent of Americans take the GOP position that those immigrants must somehow be required to return home.”
Principles, schminciples – right, Jay? Somehow, though, I very much doubt you or anyone of your persuasion would offer “amnesty” to people who illegally took up residence in your home while you and your family were away on vacation. I imagine you wouldn’t care if they did that to your neighbor’s house – just not yours.

Liberals crack me up. No one cares about ex cons and people with bad credit unable to work because of universal background checks and now you want to make those same people compete with 11 milllion ILLEGAL immigrants who will be given amnesty and a clean background. You won’t even give your OWN people a new start – why in the heck are you going to forgive foreigners for breaking the law?

DO UNTO OTHERS AS THEY WOULD DO UNTO YOU
lets just ADOPT MEXICAN LAW
Under the Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years. Visa violators can be sentenced to six-year terms. Mexicans who help illegal immigrants are considered criminals.

What cracks me up about cubans is that they vote republican but get more from the federal gov’t than those of us born here! Yes, they get the whole nine yards, social security too, as if they are entitled. What other immigrant group gets such treatment? That’s why all the other hispanic groups loathe them, to top it off, they refuse to speak english.
