Here’s what President Obama’s job-approval numbers look like, from Sept. 1 to today, as compiled from major polls by RealClearPolitics:

—————————–
It’s also interesting to look at the polls individually. Here’s a list of every major survey conducted in the month of January on the question of job approval. As you’ll notice, one of the numbers is not like the others:

Every poll but one reports an eight-to-12-point differential between job approval and disapproval. I won’t mention the identity of the outlier.
And finally, we have this, which helps to explain why, despite passionate promises to the contrary, the Republicans will not be pushing the government into default or shutting down the government anytime soon:

And we can, if you wish, break it down by party:
“Do you approve or disapprove of the way the Republicans in Congress are handling their job?”
CBS/NYT: Approve 19%, disapprove 73%
ABC/WashPo: Approve 24%, disapprove 71%
Pew Research: Approve 25%, disapprove 67%
I hardly think those numbers disprove my thesis, but make of them what you will.

Jay, the chart I want to see overlaid on top of Obama’s approval rating is the rate of weapon and ammunition sales…
Did you see the recent Onion headline that said something to the effect of “62 Year Old With Gun Only Thing Standing Between American People and Full Scale Government Takeover?”
It’s sad that plenty of decent folks are trapped in quickly-shrinking alternative realities built by the house-of-cards “logic,” rhetoric, and paranoia coming from the Network That Shall Not Be Named.

While the mainstream press routinely reports that President Obama is riding high and that Republicans are reeling, Gallup tells a rather different story about the popularity of our newly reelected president. Across Gallup’s entire history of presidential job-approval polling — dating back to 1945 — every president but one has had a higher job-approval rating in the January following his reelection than Obama has. No president has had a lower rating than Obama’s.
Gallup shows Obama’s average approval rating so far this January as being just 52 percent. President George W. Bush’s average approval rating in January 2005, immediately following his reelection, was also 52 percent. This can hardly be a source of satisfaction for Obama, who ran against Bush not once but twice — without Bush’s being on the ticket either time.
But it gets worse. President Clinton beat Obama by 8 percentage points, as Clinton’s average approval rating in January 1997 (immediately following his reelection) was 60 percent. President Reagan beat Obama by 11 points, as his average approval rating in January 1985 was 63 percent. President Nixon beat Obama by 7 points, as his average approval rating in January 1973 was 59 percent. President Eisenhower beat Obama by 21 points, as his average approval rating in January 1957 was 73 percent. And President Truman — who barely beat Thomas Dewey— beat Obama by 17 points, as Truman’s average approval rating in January 1949 was 69 percent.
So, out of the seven postwar presidents who won reelection — a test that only Presidents Johnson, Carter, and George H. W. Bush failed (as President Kennedy was killed in office and President Ford was never elected in the first place) — Obama is currently tied for last place in popularity. Moreover, Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton not only all had higher approval ratings at this stage of their presidencies than Obama does, but their approval ratings dwarfed Obama’s — beating his by an average of 13 points.
By historical standards, Obama can hardly be viewed as entering his second term as a strong, popular, and well-respected president.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Because they don’t have the spine or effective communication skills to overcome the backlash that would cause from media outlets such as Jay Bookman who already vilify them for everything from toe fungus to hurricanes.
The country is still headed toward a financial cliff (at 78mph vs. 80mph after that “screw the rich man” tax increase) and there’s silly little fat kid Jay Bookman smiling with his cookie….

One question I have about the proposed position on illegals.
They want to give them a path to legal citizenship for those that have been here for years and hold jobs.
But they also want to crack down on the companies and people hiring undocumented workers.
So, if they all get fired and can’t get work, how do they continue to support themselves and their families until they get documented from their path to citizenship.

The most interesting part of the poll chart is the startling difference between Fox News’ numbers and the rest of the polls.
Obama’s numbers arguably SHOULD be better than they are – just off re-election and a State of the Union address. But he is in the enviable position of not having to care what his poll numbers are.
I think Obama has precious little political capital (even while Congress has virtually zero) and he will need to choose his battles carefully.

Yep, we now have 50 something percent who want the government to dictate to them what they get and how much they get and how they live their lives. The idea of personnal freedom has been watered way down in the last four years to the point that the very definition is no longer relevant. No party can fight against the free money offered by government entitlements and people are more than willing to give up freedom in return for a free ride. When people find out they can sit and do nothing and still get what they need, why work? Way more people than you think are catching onto this and why not? Even the Con’s are starting to understand there is no reason to work, especially the older ones. Just give in and let the government give it to you because why get up at 4AM and go to work when you can sleep until 8AM and get it all for free like everyone else?

They say it so much and have such a following that then the journalists say “well this is a story, we have to investigate!” So they go on air saying “there is a growing movement of people [thanks to our network's talking heads] who believe Obama’s policies are socialist. Let’s investigate that claim — giving CREDENCE to the claim that Obama’s a socialist.” And it works as “journalism” because in a postmodern age “socialist” can mean anything you want it to mean!

The bigger issue is the POTUS and the press are telling them they’re going to make evil rich people and corporations pay all the bills and give them a tax cut. It’s a lie. And either Obama knows it’s a lie and he’s playing them for fools (which is working…just read this blog) or he’s a complete idiot. You can take your pick which you think it is.

“Obama has decent approval numbers given such slanted media coverage?”
Nope. Case in point:
The dead tree version of the AJC printed an AP article this morning headlined, “Sandy victims still wait for relief.” It included quotes from the poor folks who have received zero relief or any help from FEMA in over three months now, which O’bozo promised would be provided immediately. A real tear-jerker. Any guess how many times “Obama” showed up in that article? Zero.
The majority of America are takers as evidenced by last November’s election. That fact coupled with the cheerleaders in the MSM ignoring any and all incompetence of all things O’bozo leads to only one conclusion: It’s over.

Matti,
First of all the onus is not on W to prove it. Its on those making this bogus charge to prove it. If I just make the blatant accusation that you are high on drugs with your statements is the onus on me to prove such a provocative statement? Or is it on you to have to prove some completely bogus accusation that someone made against you.
Secondly W was only there for a short time and for very limited duty- part time. He was after all a weekend warrior. Its not as if he was with a group of buddies and served with them for years. So your comparison using your daddy’s life experiences is a foolish comparison that ignores these facts.
Thirdly there are in fact people that say he was there. Or perhaps in your rather slanted view you just don’t give enough of a damn to hear the other side of the story because it doesn’t fit your narrative. And then there is the matter of the pay stubs, the dental records from Montgomery, etc. He was in Montgomery at the time ma’am. There is no question about that.
Your problem is that you’re so full of hate for the man that you cannot and will not look objectively at other information. Or even give the man the benefit of the doubt. If someone makes up some bogus crap about W then by God it must be true in your view. You remind me of that girl in the allstate tv commercial who said “They can’t put anything on the internet that’s not true”.

There are cash-strapped governments and there are broke governments. And then there’s Zimbabwe, which, after paying last week’s government salaries, has just $217 left in the bank. No, we didn’t forget any zeroes to the end of that figure. Zimbabwe, the country that’s home to some of the world’s largest platinum and diamond reserves, literally has the same financial standing as a 14-year-old girl after a really good birthday party. The country’s finance minister admitted as much in a press conference on Tuesday. “Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 [left] in government coffers,” Tendai Biti told reporters. “The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment. It just strikes fear in the heart of every liberal parasite on the dole when white America says enough. We are sick and tired of paying your bills…… both black and white. Just the thought of living in a society where the money runs out and there’s none left to pay for your lazy perspective on how life ought to be lived…… scares you to death. And white America is getting increasingly tired of being the fall guy for all of the racist black welfare recipients who feel that someone owes them something. We owe you nothing. Once again, we owe you nothing. And it will become painfully obvious when, sometime in the future, the well runs dry. And with the way we are managing our money, handling our economy, handing out more than we take in…… something has to give. You will be the first casualties and you won’t like it. Fair warning. It has already been “dumped”, if the truth be known. All 3 branches of government have subverted it almost from the beginning (starting with Washington and Hamilton – two of the biggest Federalists who promised, to get the Constitution ratified, that the federal government could do no more than what was enumerated in the Constitution). Computer-generated child pornography is construed to be “free speech”. There is a generalized right to privacy therein (when, in fact, there is not). And so on and so on.

I think they would put today’s men to shame – whatever their color may be. I once visited Fort Ticonderoga in upstate NY with my wife and there learned that a small force of the “Green Mountain Boys”captured the fort and then transported the cannons to Boston in the dead of winter over hill and dale and though woods in about 3 weeks time. A herculean task (if you know NE in the winter).

Yeah, there are more whites on welfare than blacks but blacks only make up 13% of the population.
When welfare dollars are paid out based on percentages, you will have a point. Right now, your point is moot as this country pays more welfare dollars to White people than we do to Blacks. Yet, you and people like you want to demonize Blacks as welfare hogs. Why don’t you just face the facts that Whites cost America more money for welfare than anybody else? Like that recent VW commercial someone (I think) alluded to, in which a white father is “teaching” his son how to throw a baseball. No question about that. And George Washington’s men at Valley Forge- if I remember history half or more of them were barefoot trudging through the snow. I was talking in terms of who the left finds it more fashionable to blame- old dead white males that created this country or white males today. If you’ll notice any time there’s a column on demographic trends they come out of the woodwork gloating and celebrating the diminishing numbers of white males in the future if current demographic trends hold true.
Funny but the same liberals on here who are criticizing kayaker on his comments are strangely silent when some of their leftist friends gloat about the perceived diminishing numbers of white Americans in the future- as if their particular brand of closet racism is somehow okay.

Where I’ll disagree with you is I think the percentage who aren’t willing to do the job they’re qualified to do for the pay it merits vs. working the welfare system is quite a bit higher than that.
And for the record, when discussing “welfare” I include food stamps, section 8 housing, childcare assistance, utility assistance, cell phones, and the list goes on. And increasingly, I include disability since there is a pretty clear progression of people moving from actual welfare to disability.

I must have missed where he included Asians. I’ll go back and look for that. And if you read further he also noted white as well as black parasites. And I think when he says “white America” is paying the bills of course he is wrong. All of America is “paying the bills”.
I can only surmise that from his perspective that he has a sense of frustration because he sees what a lot of people already see and know- which is that blacks and Hispanics use a disproportionate share of welfare and social services than whites do as a % of their respective populations. That is nothing more than an uncomfortable truth that for some reason bothers people. It is what it is. But rest assured. Plenty of sorry ass whites that are on the dole, constantly in and out of jail, and basically just drug addicts and neverdowells. I know because out here in the country they’re all around me. And I would be shocked if whites didn’t use dramatically more welfare and social services than say Asians. Just another of those uncomfortable truths but one that shouldn’t bother any white people if they themselves are also honest.

It is mostly ideologically based on some liberal premise that I should be happy for the government to be using my tax dollars to pay someone else’s bills. Whether they be black, white, latino…. doesn’t make much of a difference. It is the premise that people are not responsible for their own well being and that it is someone else’s fault that they made bad decisions in life. Liberals are willing to accept this crap. I am not. And when you blame white males for not being too happy with this set of affairs and start calling people like this names like racist and bigot, it just shows your ignorance. Allotments for households in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.
The amount of benefits the household gets is called an allotment. The net monthly income of the household is multiplied by .3, and the result is subtracted from the maximum allotment for the household size to find the household’s allotment. This is because SNAP households are expected to spend about 30 percent of their resources on food.

That’s true. But whites also pay substantially more into the system. And as far as the welfare rolls go the number I use to see was that whites constituted 38% of welfare recipients, blacks 37%, Hispanics 20%, and the rest was others. So as a % of their respective populations there are significantly more blacks and Hispanics on welfare than whites.
Kayaker’s perception seems to be that for the most part then that white America is paying out much more money as a whole to minorities in the form of transfer payments. And judging from the numbers it looks like he’s right. Its just an uncomfortable truth that people don’t like. Another uncomfortable truth would probably be that gays, Asians, Jews, and probably some other minorities pay disproportionately much more into the system to subsidize lazy white people.

Prove that Whites pay more into the system. Just as there are more Whites collecting welfare dollars, there are more Whites who get their income from sources that are not hit with FICA and other payroll taxes that help fund welfare programs. The whole notion of Whites paying more appears to be an assumption based on population numbers. What I have yet to see is factual proof.

I saw something funny a couple of years ago that once I started to observe it I found it to be true. Michelle Malkin I think was ranting about how in our culture and especially in television commercials that its always the white guy in a commercial that gets made to look like a dope, an idiot, or a fool when the commercial has mixed company. She said it was especially so in beer commercials. So I started watching and noticed that damn if that woman wasn’t right.
Almost any commercial that you see where there is a white and a black guy or several guys of mixed company and someone is made to look like an idiot it will always be the white guy if its just one black guy and one white guy or it will always be one of the white guys that is made to look like a dolt if its a group of guys.
So when you watch all the Superbowl commercials this Sunday and you see a multicultural group in a beer or other commercial and someone gets made to look like a dolt you can damn well bet it will be the white guy.

“The whole notion of Whites paying more appears to be an assumption based on population numbers.”
Brocephus,
You’re a math guy and this isn’t even math. Its just basic common sense. If whites comprise roughly 73% of the overall population but about 37% of the welfare population than they are paying significantly more into the system to benefit other groups. Conversely if blacks for example are 13% of the population but comprise 37% of the welfare population then its just common sense that as a group they are collectively getting much more out of the system than what they are paying into it.
The reasons why these numbers are what they are is a whole other debate.
And to be sure with the recent economic downturn starting in 07 I would venture to guess that of all the new entrants into welfare that many more whites now make up the welfare rolls than in years past relative to their % of the population. The numbers I cited are old. I wouldn’t be surprised if whites now accounted for 45% or more of welfare recipients and blacks now constituted a lower number like 25 or 30%. Haven’t checked in awhile.

” NEW ORLEANS – San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver has made inflammatory comments regarding homosexuality in football just a few days before Super Bowl XLVII.
Shock jock Artie Lange revealed he had interviewed Culliver at media day Tuesday and aired a segment on his show that night, where the player insisted that any gay players would not be welcome on the team.
“I don’t do the gay guys man,” said Culliver, whose Niners play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.
“Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can’t be…in the locker room man. Nah.”
When quizzed by Lange whether any homosexual athletes would need to keep their sexuality a secret in football, Culliver responded: “Yeah, come out 10 years later after that.”

It will virtually always be a white guy or one of the white guys that gets made to look like a dolt. I can’t say I blame them. We live in a hyper sensitive culture regarding treatment of minorities. If you had 3 or 4 guys in a beer commercial and the one black guy is the one made to look like a fool then the automatic assumption is that the company or the commercial is racist. I read recently there have been 60 million abortions since Roe vs. Wade. Can that be right? Unbelievable if it is. And no one is “advocating” abortion? That seems like a whole lot of advocacy there to me.

Great point! I was thinking about that. If we could agree on the definition of what exactly constitutes corporate welfare then it could damn well be that whitey is far and away the biggest welfare recipient. Just depends on what we consider to be corporate welfare.

Del: If I’m advocating anything, it would be to make abortion unnecessary in the first place. But I don’t have any illusions that this will ever be an ideal world.
I’ve been involved with both sides of the “do I continue this pregnancy under these circumstances?” question. It’s completely gut-wrenching for everybody involved, and you spend the rest of your life second-guessing the decision you made. But I do believe that the people involve must have the freedom to make whatever decision they feel is right. Nobody outside my family needs to be involved in what are family decisions, and I have no right or interest in involving myself in someone else’s.

Mick,
Oil companies I disagree with you on-especially considering that the govt makes more off of a gallon of oil than an oil co. And that’s even on oil that an oil company gets from non-American sources. So how is it big oil is getting subsidized on a foreign gallon of oil that the govts make more money off of than the oil company that actually went out and drilled for it on the other side of the planet. And for doing absolutely nothing.
As for the BS about the 4 billion in oil “subsidies” that’s just a standard amortization write off that applies to most American businesses. They weren’t getting any more of a break than anyone else.
Now as for subsidizing commercial farms, dairy, sugar, molasses, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen’s bee keepers, and companies like Solyndra that we have no business getting involved with I would agree with you. Gotta head out for a bit.

Richt is close. Hopefully he’ll get there one day and when you think about it he was really 5 yards from the a national championship. I think we all knew the seccg was the national title game and that ND was just a formality.
Richt is one of the class guys in college football. People forget that it took the great Tom Osborne 22 years I think it was before he won a national title and I think it took Paterno something like 25 years or more to win it.
FWIW I only see 2 things wrong with Richt. No. 1 I think he really needs a strength and conditioning coach. The dawgs tend to fade a lot and bottom line is that they just don’t have the physicality of an Alabama or LSU. He just needs them to bulk up more and get more physical stamina and endurance.
The only other thing is that Saban may be a total d)(>(k but that’s okay. He runs the program with an iron fist and makes damn sure the players are focused and disciplined. Keeps those guys out of the police blotter and I’m more proud of that than the championships. And I really do believe that intense discipline our players have carries onto the field in terms of penalties and mistakes.
Richt has done a good job of disciplining them lately but in years past uga had a renegade problem with all the off the field arrests. I think if he can continue to get his guys more disciplined on and off the field they can make that leap to the top.

the way the ignorant AM radio sub-language code has crept into
our lexicon – from AP
NEW YORK (AP) — A big government study has fingered leafy greens like lettuce and spinach as the leading source of food poisoning, a perhaps uncomfortable conclusion for health officials who want us to eat our vegetables.
“Most meals are safe,” said Dr. Patricia Griffin, a government researcher and one of the study’s authors who said the finding shouldn’t discourage people from eating produce. Experts repeated often-heard advice: Be sure to wash those foods or cook them thoroughly.
While more people may have gotten sick from plants, more died from contaminated poultry, the study also found. The results were released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A simple story put out every year by the partly fed-funded CDC that
says. ‘remember to wash your vegetables’ turns into this –
-”a BIG gubmint ’study’ (hear the ignorant derisive sneer?)
-”an uncomfortable conclusion to ‘those’ that want us to eat our
vegetables (insert derisive eyeroll)
-”researchers repeated oft heard advice”…(waste $$ on ’science’)
the worst thing about the Last Decade of the Debacle of Stupid is
that these stupid people with willful ignorance have crept, slid, slimed
their way into positions of responsibility, and lower the whole bar.
Congratulations, cons. We’ll clean up your mess, again.

DowninAlbany, if you’re around, regarding this:
Party foul! It was not my intent to misrepresent, but, I understand.
It’s a bit of a shame that your copy/paste wound up getting no more attention, apparently, than a cursory “where did you get that info” sort of discussion. It bears closer examination, and here goes.
I’m someone who follows the Gallup Presidential polling trendlines a bit compulsively. I’ve cited the “Job Approval Center” website many times here. I recognize Gallup as an invaluable historical resource, but one that needs to be seen for what it is–an organization that is small “c” conservative, cautious, slow to change and thus a bit lagging in its sample base. To put it broadly, they continue to oversample landlines, and they get a bit older/more Republican-leaning sample base as a result. It’s not huge but it’s there, and if you look at their percentages over an average of the rest you’ll see they “shortchange” (not intentionally, I don’t think) Obama a little bit.
I’m not complaining about Gallup. It is what it is.
This Weekly Standard blogster’s piece you quoted, on the other hand, is silly. He is hanging his thesis on a microscopic sample size (I mean, elected-for-a-second-term postwar presidents? Obama is one of six. (The blogster is really pushing that definition by including Truman in this.)
Also, when you have such a small sample size, you have to include other factors such as that 800# gorilla in the room, the worst economic hit since the 30s. None of the other guys had that to cope with–a better comparison would be how FDR fared in 1936, but Gallup wasn’t polling back then.
Having followed the Gallup numbers pretty compulsively during Obama’s first term–and I encourage others to click that link and compare the various Administrations–he compares pretty favorably to Clinton, actually. Obama did significantly better than Clinton during the first part of his term, but Clinton pulled a bit ahead later.
This isn’t to say that Obama couldn’t, conceivably, walk into the kind of snares Bush found himself in, in 2005 and be looking at horrible numbers in a coupla years. We could have the equivalent of a Katrina + a Terry Schaivo clusterfoxtrot; while Obama isn’t committing hundreds of thousands of ground troops to a “surge” in hopes of salvaging Afghanistan at the moment, there’s a potential for nasty blowback there, still.
But the Weekly Standard blogster was grasping at straws, hoping that his readers hadn’t been paying terribly close attention. It was lame, superficial, and based on a snapshot, without even the modicum of attention paid to bleedin’ obvious externalities, IMHO.

Frustrated Inner-City Students Running Out Of Ideas To Motivate Teachers
CHICAGO—A frustrated group of students at Dunne High School on Chicago’s South Side told reporters Thursday that they are running out of ideas to motivate their underperforming teachers, who they claim have apparently given up on education despite the pupils’ concerted efforts.
“We’ve tried everything to reach out to our teachers in hopes of making a connection, but it’s just so hard to get through to them,” said 10th-grader Christopher Fenton, who confirmed that most of his instructors live in low-income households and lack the basic language skills to communicate effectively. “It’s difficult to walk in the classroom each morning and see them sitting listlessly at their desks, convinced that nothing they do at school matters. And, unfortunately, it creates a vicious cycle: They think they’re going nowhere, and so that’s how they behave.”
While Fenton stated that the school’s inadequate facilities and out-of-date teaching materials were partly to blame for educators’ dismal performance, he also acknowledged the problem has been exacerbated by the perceptible substance abuse issues that afflict many of his teachers, a number of whom have already developed lifelong dependencies on drugs and alcohol.

Stands, I don’t think the ultimate goal is destabilization of course. But yes, the goal is for certain remaining regimes to go the way of Gaddafi, e.g. Assad, while in other cases propping up existing regimes – Mali. The “junior” partners in the French are engaged here at the moment, but the UK and US are closely involved and ready to step in at any point, from what it appears.
Bottom line is that we are witnessing a whole new “scramble for Africa” as the major world powers try to shore up their struggling economies and their hegemony. It cannot end well.

It would be interesting to see what the poll numbers would be if obama was held to a similar standard as other presidents by the press. He has been protected to the point of embarrassment on economic issues and the majority of the population is dumbed down to believe what they are told by media favorable to obama because of his strict adherence to liberal ideology, regardless of the imact it has on our economic stability. George H.W. Bush received almost complete blame for the economy during his presidency and ultimately lost a 2nd term even though the economy at that time was better than it is now. Yet, obama continues to get a free pass from the press and a largely uninformed electorate is told that things are getting better when reality does not square with this retoric.

The Republicans promised us, via their faith in the Heritage Club, that their tax cuts will pay for themselves just as soon as the unemployment rate settles in for the long haul at about 2.8%, give or take. So, all we have left to deal with is the borrowing used to pay for them thar wars and that prescription drug company benefit, etc. Nothing that a little sequester can’t handle.

The whole basis of his predictive method is basically to brush the outliers aside as false signals or noise, and go with the poll average instead.
In other words, if you’re going to come in here and impress us with your book learning, you’re going to have to do better than this.

These are salad days for liberals and other Obamaphiles. Bookman’s got the charts and figures to prove it.
Perhaps the faithful needed a bit of a boost after yesterday’s gloomy economic report.
Be afraid, you old white, male fogies. Be very afraid. Your only comfort now is your guns and religion (and Viagra). Thank God for Viagra.
Funny, in all the gloating, you still don’t see many comments that actually extoll BHO’s accomplishments, four years in. Besides getting even, that is to say.
Abosolution is rampant, however. Sure, things are still pretty crappy, but It’s not Obama’s fault (yet).
President Payback is certainly a likable man though, isn’t he? That is if he likes you. Are there any victims in the house?
America’s going through a period of extended adolescence. What appeals to us now is superficial charm. The last guy we want to listen to is the authority figure who brought us into this world and lectured us constantly on individual virtues like responsibility and industry. He tells us there is no guarantee in life. You gotta work for it.
This same guy has provided for us our whole life, but now we turn a deaf ear to him. He’s provided pretty well for our needs. He taught us how to stand on our own two feet.
He embarrasses us by his mere existence too. And face it, some of his ideas are old fashioned – heck maybe even wrong. But he’s a human being, not a Messiah – like….
But sooner or later, superficial charm wears off. The Obama magic will be revealed as just that – illusion.
Obama’s leadership – for all it’s supposed charm to many – isn’t sustainable. It’s built on revenge. It’s served to further polarize America. He’s a crusader – a social reformer. He’d rather eat one of John Boehner’s sweat socks than compromise. He’s burdened to some extent by the notion of his perceived moral superiority. You don’t compromise your morals.
You don’t pump blood into a flaccid economy with more regulations and taxes either, but I guess that’s beside the point. Another Viagra reference. I guess I know where my mind is today.
But like the cocky adolescent, sooner or later, America will have to come to the realization that the old farts who brought us into the world were right all along.
And Barack Obama? He’ll be guest starring on Love Boat, the Next Generation.

In an effort to preempt a new round of creative facts repeated by NRA supporters (a longshot hope, I know) I offer this (with credit to USinUK):
“Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) reminded LaPierre that the NRA once supported checks with “no loopholes anywhere, for anyone.” So does the NRA favor closing the “gun-show loophole” that allows people to avoid background checks?
“We do not,” LaPierre replied.
His reasoning, as always, is that existing gun laws aren’t being enforced — but he seems to have pulled the evidence out of his gun barrel. “Out of more than 76,000 firearms purchases supposedly denied by the federal instant check system, only 62 were referred for prosecution,” LaPierre declared in his opening statement.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) looked up the actual statistic. “In 2012 more than 11,700 defendants were charged with federal gun crimes,” Whitehouse said, “a lot more than 62.”
LaPierre had been caught. “So those — the 62, senator, statistic, was for Chicago alone,” he clarified, a salient fact omitted from his original testimony.”

With regards to your comment earlier that “they have to pay for it,” well, yes, it comes out of their paycheck but the fact remains that they are not restrained by a fixed income such that any cost of living increases take a bigger bite out of their total budget when they have the ability to simply increase the pay to offset the increased expenditures. I worked for da man (aka one of those Fortune 500 companies) during a timeframe when corporate America was doing this transition thingy from defined pensions to the 401k with company contribution, when they feel like it, so when I retired, I got a pension (that does not get cost-of-living adjustments) and a 401k but with fewer years of accumulated contributions than the next wave of retirees should amass over their careers. Such is life. Anyway, I rolled over my 401k to an IRA and I actively manage it along with other holdings myself in an attempt to maintain a suitable monthly benefit going forward. Of course I am assuming that I will eventually get me some social security benefit equipped with COLA in the future as well but that’s a few more years off.

I left a lot out of that quote – which is why I provided a link. The point was LaPierre’s answer was intentionally misleading, regardless of the nature of the question.
I don’t see how “Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) reminded LaPierre that the NRA once supported checks with “no loopholes anywhere, for anyone.” So does the NRA favor closing the “gun-show loophole” that allows people to avoid background checks?
“We do not,” LaPierre replied.”
can be considered a ‘gotcha’ question. It’s a simple “you once supported it. Do you now?” LaPierre said ‘no’ then provided false justification.
The vast majority of gun show sellers may be dealers, but given (stat I heard this morning) 40 percent of all gun sales are done at shows, that’s still a significant number of people buying guns with no background check.
Frankly, LaPierre reminds me of a two-year-old in the midst of ‘the terrible two’s.” NO is his favorite word.
Difference is, two-year-olds don’t get a million bucks a year for saying “NO!”

I made a KILLER lazy pasta last night! While the pasta is cooking, grab your food processor and add 1 basket of cherry tomatoes, 4 sun-roasted tomatoes packed in olive oil, about 1 Tbsp of the tomato oil plus another Tbsp of regular oil, 2 cloves garlic and a handful of flat-leaf parsley – puree and taste for seasoning, then pour on your pasta. It’s really fresh and the heat of the pasta “cooks” it lightly … seriously NOM

Fred, I believe the studies cited were from different time periods (1999 and 2007) and thus may reflect changes. Also there are significant blocks to gathering information. But obviously if there are problems with the studies, the claim that “a majority of sales at gun shows are by licensed gun dealers” also would have no substantiation.
Last point, if any sales are permitted without background checks, where would those most likely to have a problem because of their backgrounds, go to purchase guns?

IRS estimates the cheapest form of emperornerocare for those without employment coverage at $20,000 per year (that’s paid with after tax dollars, sports fans), so the vast hordes of unemployed will owe the penalty (excuse me, Chief Justice Roberts said it is actually a tax). Think they will pay it?
