Economy takes a fourth-quarter stumble

From the Washington Post:

“The U.S. economy contracted slightly in the final months of 2012, as defense spending plummeted and businesses depleted their inventories, in a surprising development that could give hints of the economic challenges to come.

Gross domestic product fell at a 0.1 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, far below the 1.1 percent gain that analysts had forecast. The number will be revised extensively in the months ahead as more complete data becomes available, but if the number stays in negative territory, it would be the first contraction for the U.S. economy since the second quarter of 2009.”

That’s not good news by any means, but it’s also not as bad as it might appear. In wake of the announcement, for example, the stock market plummeted a whopping 18 points, or 0.13 percent, as of 12:30 p.m. In addition, a new report from ADP, which monitors private-industry hiring, predicts that the economy added a decent 192,000 jobs in January.

“According to the ADP National Employment Report, private sector employers created an average of 183,000 new jobs per month during the last three months,” said Carlos A. Rodriguez, ADP’s president and chief executive officer. “This is an encouraging sign of steady improvement in the job market.”

NERprJan2013-chart1

So what drove the surprising GDP decline? According to the Wall Street Journal, a lot of it can be attributed to a sudden 15 percent reduction in federal spending in the fourth quarter. That was the largest single-quarter drop since 1973. Clearly, taking that much money out of a still-fragile economy had an impact.

To which Sen. Mitch McConnell responded, again according to the WSJ:

“Clearly, we need to address spending. There’s simply no other way to solve the problem.”

E. Cat — “I try..was never a fan of his especially in his second term”

I appreciate that. Seriously.

FWIW, it troubles me that some conservatives try to paint our involvement in Afghanistan as *Obama’s* war. That’s where OBL was on 9/11, that’s where we cornered him several years ago and that’s where we should have been concentrating our forces, not a thousand-plus miles away in a another country entirely.

I feel that I’ve been more than honest in repeatedly stating that *both* Bush and Obama suck when it comes to job creation. Neither President’s record on that score is anything to write home about. However, it seems that many conservative posters here just can’t bring themselves to recognize that.

Republican or Democrat, we’re never going to be able to solve our own problems if we just dig in and defend all the players on our own respective teams. We *have GOT* to be able to say ‘yeah, that’s a suck idea from my side’ or ‘no, I can’t agree with my side on that’ when a stupid argument or proposal comes up.

Otherwise, we’ll be stuck in this rut indefinitely.

The estimate that is a source of all flawed economic decisions is the growth rate. IMO in order to allow more credibility, all decisions need be made with assumption of zero growth. Sounds nuts on the surface but this will result in more balanced decisions and allow room for error..

George Bush Accidentally Votes For Obama

Nov. 06, 2012

Former U.S. president George W. Bush accidentally voted for Barack Obama today at a polling place near his Crawford, TX home.

According to local reports, the two-term Republican was confused by the instructions on his electronic voting machine and mistakenly cast a ballot he intended to discard.

Witnesses say Bush argued with poll workers for several minutes afterwards in a effort to redo his vote, but in accordance with state law they ultimately denied his request.

The embarrassing incident may have gone unnoticed if it weren’t for a local newspaper reporter who happened to be voting in the next booth. Suzanna Everett, a politics correspondent for the Waco Times witnessed the entire ordeal and crafted a cunning scheme to make it public.

Made my money during the dot.com bubble – everything was going up! $150,000 grew to $600,000 in less than 4 years. Sold when “INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY” gave the sell signal – near the top. Then I started buying REITS (Real Estate Investment Trusts) and thanks to the leniency of Congress they tripled in about 3 years. By then I had developed my own sell signal based on IBD and three other services. Got out a little past the top but still kept 90+ % of my profits. I also bought some farm & timber land. Sold most of it but unfortunately still have 330+ acres on a beautiful creek in mid Georgia near Hawkinsville. FOR SALE at the right price if you need a place. Just recently I bought a small island outside of the USA – in case things get bad around here.

No one in this country wants socialism. That’s a GOP con. A con by the cons. So to speak. Meant to spread terror among their core base and encourage support

uhhh…maxine waters wanted to nationalize (socialize) the oil industry. there is a congressional socialist group….the socialist party senator works with the libdims….bammy thinks more governement is the answer to every problem we have…..sounds socialist to me.

I can only assume he or she immediately spends every penny of his paycheck when he gets paid

Boy, would you ever be wrong.

but see, I get the difference between my personal financial needs (I sock away every penny I can reasonably manage into retirement and college funds) and the economics of the richest, most powerful nation on earth. Pity more of our elected officials cannot.

It’s funny how cons just won’t admit how wrong they are. When all that pesky information keeps comming out showing just how pathetic and inept G.W. Bush actually was, they simply ignore it or deflect it.

JAPAN’s debt to GDP is around 208%………… they had a financial crisis and housing bubble in the 90’s……….. the actions they took have resulted in HIGH DEBT and LOW GROWTH………… and we follow their example………………. we will slide like them but at least we can use population growth to pull out eventually.,,,,,,,,

Compared to what? :)

Seriously, I’m pretty sure we’re arguing semantics, here. If you were the proverbial “alien from outer space,” or somehow had never seen a football game before, then you could say you WERE NOT comparing a QB to others.

However, you seem like a person who has some football knowlege – you can tell when a QB is having a good game, because you’ve SEEN a QB have a good game before, so you know what it looks like. In this situation, I would say that you were comparing the QB to others. I suspect you would not. No matter. I’m sure we’ve both got more important things to do than continue this. Have a good day!

Great. A 4th quarter retraction in what should normally be a robust period for the economy. Add this to the constant stagnant employment and-what? Oh, you mean Wonkblog tells us there no problem and it’s simply an issue of greater government spending? Heck, what didn’t you say so??

@Stevie Ray – the argument for the blame that Nancy and Jay said were the 4th quarter “fiscal cliff” that the GOP were dragging their feet.

And Bush may have been President, I wouldn’t say he was on the hook. Everyone wanted someone accountable for 9/11. Stopping Saddam Hussein and Usama Bin Laden were big priority’s.

Depends on who he’s playing. If he’s playing the Crimson Tide defense that’s a helluva day even with the 3 picks. If he’s playing any other defense it sucks.

Indigo – you are a sweet person but you have a LOT to learn. This disaster started long before “W” arrived. The Dems & Repubs are PARTY LOYALISTS … they are loyal to their PARTY – not the FISCAL survival and future of the USA. BOTH sides created this disaster. “W” is just the scapegoat. Obama voted for ALL of the deficit building programs – Obama voted for the bank bailout.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Let me EDUCATE YOU about socialism.

There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them.
They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate.

A socialist economic system would consist of a system of production and distribution organized to directly satisfy ECONOMIC DEMANDS and HUMAN NEEDS, so that goods and services would be produced directly for USE instead of for PRIVATE PROFIT driven by the accumulation of capital.

By the late 19th-century, “socialism” had come to signify opposition to capitalism.

KEY WORD HERE IS capitalism: An economic and political system in
which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by PRIVATE OWNERS for PROFIT.

Capitalism…hmmmmm….Remember Mitt Romney?

And?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer confidence plunged in January to its lowest level in more than a year, reflecting higher Social Security taxes that left Americans with less take-home pay.

The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index dropped to 58.6 in January. That’s down from 66.7 in December and the lowest since November 2011.

And in other news here comes February shortly. Typically the crappiest month of the year in terms of weather and sports. No football, baseball hasn’t started, March madness doesn’t start till well, March. NBA playoffs are still months away. Bo-ring. And in another affront to black America we just had to give Black history month the crappiest month of the year. Sigh.
