Economy takes a fourth-quarter stumble

From the Washington Post:

“The U.S. economy contracted slightly in the final months of 2012, as defense spending plummeted and businesses depleted their inventories, in a surprising development that could give hints of the economic challenges to come.

Gross domestic product fell at a 0.1 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, far below the 1.1 percent gain that analysts had forecast. The number will be revised extensively in the months ahead as more complete data becomes available, but if the number stays in negative territory, it would be the first contraction for the U.S. economy since the second quarter of 2009.”

That’s not good news by any means, but it’s also not as bad as it might appear. In wake of the announcement, for example, the stock market plummeted a whopping 18 points, or 0.13 percent, as of 12:30 p.m. In addition, a new report from ADP, which monitors private-industry hiring, predicts that the economy added a decent 192,000 jobs in January.

“According to the ADP National Employment Report, private sector employers created an average of 183,000 new jobs per month during the last three months,” said Carlos A. Rodriguez, ADP’s president and chief executive officer. “This is an encouraging sign of steady improvement in the job market.”

NERprJan2013-chart1

So what drove the surprising GDP decline? According to the Wall Street Journal, a lot of it can be attributed to a sudden 15 percent reduction in federal spending in the fourth quarter. That was the largest single-quarter drop since 1973. Clearly, taking that much money out of a still-fragile economy had an impact.

To which Sen. Mitch McConnell responded, again according to the WSJ:

“Clearly, we need to address spending. There’s simply no other way to solve the problem.”

Pretty sure Keynes wrote that deficit spending was a good idea when you’re in a recession, but when you get out of the recession you’re supposed to pay it back. In fact the defiit spending leads to a swifter recovery, which increases the tax base and also supports tax rate increases. We’ve run deficits for 12 years now in good times or bad and that won’t work indefinitely.

It’s just a fact that Obama’s “recovery” has never been much of one. Obama’s trickle-down government policies have failed. Staggering deficits have investors freaked; the constant push to punish the rich has employers freaked; crippling regulations have small business freaked; and this ongoing uncertainty and the non-stop removing of money from the private economy trickles down to a point where something’s got to give. And the victims are who they always are: the poor and the jobless.

The Congressional Budget Office and The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, tells the story of George Bush and his spending ways, and how he turned a surplus into a deficit beginning in 2002, and how that deficit grew each year until he left office in 2009.

•The Bush wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, along with Defense – $1.5 Trillion added to the deficit.
•The Bush Tax Cuts – $1.8 Trillion added to the deficit.
•Non-Defense Discretionary spending under George Bush – $608 Billion added to the deficit.
•Bush Tarp and other Bailouts – $224 Billion added to the deficit.

The economy “stumbled”, eh? What a huge surprise!

Let’s not go off half-cocked in an attempt to get this out-of-control federal spending under control. We need to devise some other plan of action!

I know! Let’s give legal status to 11 million (more like 18-20 million) illegal aliens! They can then add even more stress to our overburdened welfare rolls. Think of the economic boom in unpaid hospital and medical bills! We can then do something about increasing the Obamacare rolls since that has been so helpful to our economy by making former full-time employees into part-time employees.

Maybe we should send more money and military equipment to Egypt, our very close friend and ally in the Middle East?

While we’re at it, we can plan a few more joint police/MILITARY exercises in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston. That should aid our economy, too.

Oh, Barack, you and the other dimocrats really have things looking good now!

“True that the GOP spent way too much money when they had control from 2001-2005, however the Dems took control of Congress in 2007 and the economy tanked in 2008 and hasn’t been back pre Wall St collapse since….”

What many people fail to note is that governmental policies do not always affect the economy IMMEDIATELY; there are many cases that that effect lags behind the economy anywhere from six to thirty-six months after implementation!! Note the beginning of the financial crash was during the policies set under total Republican control………..

” How’s Georgia going to replace that revenue? Because nobody in their right mind wants to vacation in GA……By raising sales taxes so everyone has skin in the game. Its only fair… ”

Actually, it isn’t fair!! Sales taxes are the more REGRESSIVE form of taxation. The tax burden would shift from those with a greater disposable income to those with virtually NO disposable income….particularly if sales taxes remain on food and clothing……..
A progressive income tax is fairer in that those with the greater capability will pay more in taxes……

Private sector job creation under President Obama has far exceeded private sector job creation under President Bush.

40 months into his presidential term, there are currently more private sector jobs in the economy than when Obama came into office. At the same point in President Bush’s term, the total number of private sector jobs was still down 1.7 percent from where it began.

The numbers are even starker when measuring each president’s record from the moment job creation returned. Private sector job creation returned in February of 2010, the 13th month of President Obama’s term. Since then, the economy has added 4.3 million private sector jobs, a 4 percent increase.

YOU and the CONS have just continued to pile on Obama like

he STARTED this mess.

Uh HUH….blame the BLACK MAN. Its his fault?

Where were YOU when Bush went on a SPENDING SPREE?

UNDER A ROCK?

I was calling our elected officials and telling them to stop the spending.

BTW….this massive spending was made possible by LBJ when he started the failed Great Society and raiding SS Trust Fund to partially pay for it.

Why do Republicans steadfastly refuse to repudiate Bush’s policies and those who advanced them? Romney made it clear that he’d *restore* some Bush-era policies and even hired on several of Bush’s former advisors to be on his campaign team. It’s reasonable to presume that some of them might even have been tapped to serve in a potential Romney administration.

So if Republicans agree that Bush sucked so hard, let’s see y’all kick him, his people and his policies to the curb. And don’t look back in the mirror as we’re driving off, either.

Again, I don’t know what’s offensive about what I posted. It was simply a reference to gun violence in Chicago…nothing else

I believe it is reasonable to compare a president to his predecessor, as conditions are likely to be most similar. Which president do YOU feel it would be most appropriate for us compare him to? Milllard Fillmore?

And why do conservatives want to make G-Dub a non-person? You must have liked him when you voted for him…

“When Georgia’s legislature passes a bill that eliminates the state income tax I could only imagine Jay and his fellow libs losing their lunch…”

The only reason Florida was able to eliminate the state income tax is because of the revenue taken in rom tourists. How’s Georgia going to replace that revenue? Because nobody in their right mind wants to vacation in GA.

Jobs are created in the private sector but gub’ment has gotten so big it can create a negative environment for any growth. It is Obama and Congress’s job to create a positive environment for job growth. On that I will give them a D+. It is not the gub’ment’s job to create jobs. To Obama a gub’ment created job is one more on unemployment moved to disability. Voila another Obama created job!

Jay:

This is hard to believe with all of the new gun sales …………. oh, well.

By the way:

Georgia Sherrif’s Association Statement on Gun Control (released 1/30/13)

““The sheriffs took an oath to support the Constitution and will stand by the 2nd Amendment. The sheriffs will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation which infringes upon law abiding citizens’ right to bear arms.

The sheriffs further agree to support any legislation that would effectively penalize criminals who use firearms in the commission of crimes.”

The vote was unanimous.

Interesting that my viewpoint on the subject is right in line with theirs:

I support ANY legislation or regulation that will do TWO things:

1) Actually work.
2) Not violate the Constitution
