“I believe we can get it done. I’ll see you at the bill signing.”
– President George W. Bush in 2007,
expressing confidence in passage of a
major immigration reform package
———————————
Of course, the bill signing envisioned by President Bush never did take place. Opposition from within his own party quickly doomed the measure, and the relationship between Republicans and Hispanic Americans has been all downhill ever since.
In 2004, Bush attracted 44 percent of the Hispanic vote on his way to re-election. In 2008, after the demise of the immigration bill, John McCain pulled just 31 percent. Mitt Romney, whose solution to the problem was self-deportation, got 27 percent in 2012. An ever-declining percentage of a fast-growing demographic group is a long-term formula for failure, as McCain himself reminded his party Monday.
“If we continue to polarize the Latino/Hispanic vote,” the Arizona senator said on CNN, “the demographics indicate that our chances of being in the majority are minimal.”
So this week, McCain joined seven other U.S. senators — an equal mix of Republicans and Democrats — in announcing agreement on a broad, comprehensive immigration-reform package. Marco Rubio of Florida, a potential GOP presidential contender in 2016, was also among the group. And while that ought to be encouraging, the truth is that conservatives and liberals seem to have very different ideas about the details of the proposal, which at this point exists only as a vague description of principles.

The Hispanic Leadership Network, an offshoot of a major Republican SuperPAC, sent a memo to congressional Republicans this week, offering a series of friendly reminders about how to talk about immigration reform in public.
Such broad descriptive language can sidestep or paper over major policy differences, but those differences become glaringly apparent once you start putting it into legislative language of “shall” and “shall not”. In one indication of the work ahead, senators don’t expect to have an actual bill to introduce until the end of March, and even that schedule is probably optimistic.
McCain, Rubio and other prominent Republicans know that their party would be damaged permanently if it is seen to be blocking yet another effort at immigration reform. Yet a different bloc of Republicans, most of them in the House, remains committed to oppose anything that might offer amnesty or a path to citizenship for those who came here illegally.
President Obama’s strained relationship with House Republicans adds another layer of difficulty to the problem. The president is scheduled to announce his own immigration-reform package today in Nevada, which is also the home state of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Not coincidentally, the growing Latino vote has been crucial in turning Nevada from a red state to a blue state in the last two presidential elections.
Obama has promised to make immigration reform a primary goal of his second term in office, and like Reid, he’s under pressure to produce. However, he also recognizes that the pressure on Republicans is even more intense. The longer this problem remains unresolved, leaving some 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants in legal limbo, the more difficult it becomes for the GOP.
In Georgia, for example, non-white Hispanics make up an estimated 9 percent of the population, but they comprised barely 1 percent of the turnout in the 2012 election. Regardless of what happens in Washington, that second number is going to rise and rise quickly in future election cycles, and if Republicans can’t at least be competitive for that vote, things get very difficult.

This is not the problem of resolving their status for some Republicans the problem is them being able to bring over an additional 20 plus million in the name of “Reunifying families”.

The GOP is on a fools errand. They think they will gain Latino voters if they pass some type of reform.
However, the Latinos can see through this BS. Just listen to what McCain said. He doesn’t care about the Latinos, he only cares about their votes so the cons can gain power.
A vile, disgusting bunch of sore losers, those cons.

I think this is very much needed, immigration reform that is, we are all immigrants in our families history at some point. Let’s not forget that. It is easy to forget as generations have gone by, but at some point our ancestors were clamoring to get in here as well. We should be grateful we live in a country that people are so eager to enter. I don’t hear about people lining up trying to get into many other countries in order to change their lives.

As a conservative I want to see a couple other items in the actual bill.
1: On the date the border is considered secure then any illegal has X time frame to come forward and declare if they are going for citizenship or they must leave the country and if they do not leave then it is a felony..
2: After the date the border is secure then anyone crossing the border without proper documentation will be committing a Felony and after they serve their jail time then they are deported and can never come to here again.
3: No one staying and not going back to their country of origin first will never be allowed to bring their families here.
4: States will be allowed to assist the Federal government in immigration enforcement. 387g program for all states and the Feds are REQUIRED to pick up any illegal with 72 hours and shall prosecute them.
5: Tracking chips in all Temporary visas and the Feds are required to find the people if they overstay the visa.
The devil will be in the details.

The GOP has done such a good job of portraying hispanic (read Mexican) immigrants as lazy, tequila swigging, public assistance moochers over the last couple of decades. The GOP are now a victim of that PR campaign.
The reality is, most hispanics are hard-working, family values, Catholic conservatives. A voting bloc that should be squarely in the GOP corner.
One of these days, the GOP may wake up and realize that pandering to the fears of their established white base is ultimately self-defeating.

In Missouri, murderers can get food stamps, but those with drug convictions can’t
Get out of prison for murder, child molestation or just about any other felony in Missouri and you can still get food stamps.
But if you have a felony drug conviction, forget it. You’re banned for life.
To Johnny Waller, who had a drug conviction in his past, that just doesn’t seem fair. And that’s why the 34-year-old Kansas City resident traveled this week, as he has for years, to the state Capitol to speak out for legislation lifting the lifetime ban.
“I just believe everyone should get a second chance,” he said.
Missouri is one of only nine states where a felony drug conviction means a lifetime ban from ever qualifying for food stamps. Congress allows states to opt out of the ban, which was imposed in 1996 as part of welfare reform legislation. To date, 41 states and the District of Columbia have lifted or modified the ban, including Kansas in 2006.
Waller believes he’s the poster child for why Missouri should change its ways, because he has. He was 18 when he was convicted of possession of narcotics with the intent to sell, a felony that landed him in prison for more than two years.
But in the 13 years since completing his sentence, Waller said he’s stayed on the straight and narrow. He started a business and eventually went back to school. He’s currently attending Rockhurst University on an academic scholarship.
He even received a pardon last year from the governor of Nebraska for his crime, which he committed in that state.
Yet under current state law, he would still be permanently ineligible for food stamps.

The bipartisan proposal makes sense. Once basic agreements of border security and equal protection under the law are guaranteed there should be little resistance. But Obama has his own agenda, and it is a strictly political one. He does not want to lose the advantage he has enjoyed from sowing discord, and convincing target groups that republicans do not like (and even hate) them is one of his main strategies. You can see evidence of his influence in the remarks on this blog. So today he spends over a million dollars to fly across the country to announce something that–if he truly wanted to improve immigration policy–he would address at the White House with the bipartisan group in attendance. Since democrats would receive no benefit from working with republicans on this issue, expect delays until after mid-term elections, along with hand-wringing and lamentations about republican *intransigence.*

LB4 Leap — “The reality is, most hispanics are hard-working, family values, Catholic conservatives. A voting bloc that should be squarely in the GOP corner.”
Exactly what my Hispanic wife says. She is absolutely gobsmacked at how the GOP let this huge potential opportunity get away from them. In her opinion, if the GOP had figured out early on that Hispanics were already culturally inclined to many conservative principles (instead of just pushing back against ‘the other’), then that prescience would be now paying dividends in the form of a huge, pro-Republican voting bloc.
Instead, what the Republicans succeeded in creating were a couple of generations worth of Hispanics who have been successfully *taught* to distrust and oppose Republicans *even despite* their moral similarities.
Well done, GOP. And THANKS!

how many cases of whiplash there are on the right side
Reminds me–around the time of the latest Roe v. Wade anniversary, I heard tell about Nixon’s “northern strategy”, wherein he (and the national party, eventually) did a very similar about-face. They had been about as pro-choice as the Dems, but there was an opportunity, they thought, to peel off Catholic voters who tended to back Democrats.
Of course it turned out to be a lot more complicated than that (for one thing, actual Catholic voters turned out not to be anywhere near as monolithic in their beliefs as imagined).
In this case, I suspect it’s every bit as complicated; being “soft” on undocumented immigrants is (I suspect) a real deal-killer for some voters. They may simply turn apathetic, or they may go the protest-vote route.
Lest I sound like a hopeless cynic, however:
Seeing the error of their ways, they are coming around to the right side of history.
GH, one can credibly believe that, or one more simply can call it “enlightened self-interest”, which is close to the same thing.
Generally, I do think it’s all good, and it’s all part of the arc of the universe being long but bending toward justice, like Dr. King said. No matter how sordid the resulting legislative sausage-making may turn out to be.

Democrats have been pursuing it because it’s the right thing to do. Republicans now pursue it because the demographics and political reality have turned against them. But, if demographic and political reality compel change, then good.
Democrats are willing to do this even if it means Hispanics rebound back to the Republican party. Yet a significant segment of Republicans will continue to oppose any and all reform if it differs in any way from what they want. You can lead an elephant to water, bend his trunk , submerge it and squeeze it, but you still can’t make him drink.

Please let the Republicans in the House have their way, it is destroying them in a midrange future. These fools can’t see their nose in front of their face and here’s hoping they never will. Mean, guns and redneck educated hate doesn’t work any more. Immigration is a formula that has worked in this country since its birth. They are second amendment lovers that talk about what our forefathers meant on one subject and have no clue what this country means to those that yearn to be free. However, we’re also aware that life is full of choices. Today, their choice is to come here, work hard, make money, and eat, OR stay in Mexico and starve or be killed. When they find section 8 housing, food stamps, and the rest of the “programs” more lucrative than work, they’ll likely make the same decisions as many of our “less fortunate”. Don’t worry, though, I’m sure Obama will tax the rich to cover at least 5% of the money required for that too so allyou whiny little cookie eating liberals will feel good about him doing something even if what he does is mere window dressing. Look before you leap – Canadians protect their border very well – coming in and going out. Mexico won’t let you in without a passport. If Mexican citizens wish to leave Mexico – papers aren’t so necessary. It is not Mexico’s responsibility to cover our border but they do protect THEIR border against illegal intruders and they will be punished – quite rightly so.

It’s equally clear laws had to be broken left and right for many years for such a situation to exist.
For some reason, those who failed to enforce our immigration laws for all those years have never been brought to justice.

Robert Lee – I changed my appointment to Thursday just for you – well not really just for you but I did change it. Frog – It is a revelation and a calculation…… I determined that this country was headed toward the FISCAL CLIFF BO (before Obama) and B “W”) before “W” . The SOCIALIST social Fed Gub’ment programs have been expanding like a cancer on the FISCAL future destruction of the USA for decades. The unfunded and under funded big Fed gub’ment did not begin with “W” or Obama. All they did was speed up the looming disaster. I did not vote “W” nor Obama. I am a FISCAL conservative and “W” and Obama are FISCAL, spend beyond your means, LIBERALS. They BOTH voted to bail out the crooked banks. I voted for Ross Perot who warned us of this coming FISCAL disaster. Both “W” and Obama are PARTY LOYALISTS above USA LOYALTY for the survival of our FISCAL. “Do you honestly believe that republicans only do something for votes while dems are only perusing legislation “because it is the right thing to do”?
Well I can say you have been listening and learning from our president.
Both sides do things for votes but both sides also want what they feel is best for the nation.
Maybe just maybe if more people would try to respect that about each other our country would be in a better place.
But apparently it is more serviceable for some to vilify which ever side is the other side. Usually trying to discount their ideas as having alternative deceitful motivations.”
How about this?
A Republican president wanted to take action because he wanted to do the right thing for the country. His party fought him every step of the way and offered nothing realistic. This alienated a goodly portion of the party, who switched sides. Some Republican leaders saw the effects of their intransigence and began to work toward a solution. And are still being fought by other Republican leaders.
Do both sides take actions to secure allegiance from groups? Sure. But a key point here is one I mentioned: this action, if successful, could cost Democrats votes. If successful, it could gain Republicans votes. Yet Democrats are still pursuing it. So the scales on this issue can be viewed as expediency for Republicans, good of the country for Democrats.

We have had laws on the books for years….they were never enforced. Everybody was quick to pass judgement on Arizona since most of them were not directly on the border (like the Arizonans are) and only saw the problems encountered with an outsiders view. Like race-relations……if one lives in an all-white or all black area, the view is different than the problems encountered by those that are meshed together and therefore have a close-up and personal view. I understand this is a nation of immigrants, but all of them should be here legally and go thtough all proper channels. Funny; some folks want the laws THEY want, but if it is not a law they specifically want, then it has to be wrong.!!
No doubt something had to be done…..but we do not have tons of folks crossing the Mexican border; they handle those pretty quickly………

So anytime legislation is passed that gains votes for one and loses it for the other only one side is doing it for the good of the country?
Could any, not all but any, of those who did not support Bush’s amnesty plan have been doing so because of concerns remaining from how the ‘86 amnesty thing went?
Seems that both sides compromised on this proposal, with dems getting a realistic path to citizenship( which is a pet of theirs and is an issue our country needs to deal with and will benefit the nation in the long term) and repubs getting what they want a securing of the border (which is a pet of theirs and is an issue our country needs to deal with and will benefit the nation in the long term)
Now it could be argued both sides were wanting what they wanted to garner votes from their base or supporters. But it could also be seen as a compromise for the better of our country.
I suppose it depends upon ones level of partisanship and/or dislike of the “other” side as to how one views it though.

Sigh. It seems we have to bring this back up every time the immigration issue is discussed.
Contrary to what many think, it is not a crime to be in this country without proper documentation. It is not a felony and it is not a misdemeanor. It is a “document offense,” about on the same level as driving without a driver’s license or proof of insurance.
If you’re caught without proper documentation, you’re not automatically going to be jailed and deported, at least not in most cases. Generally, what happens (at least in the case of expired visas or residency permits) is that the offender’s status is regularized as quickly as possible (e.g. visa or residency extension), but if that’s not possible, they’re given a short period to wrap up their affairs here in the US and then leave.
Undocumented persons who commit *actual* misdemeanors or felonies are treated differently, but as a general rule, just being here without proper documentation is *not* a “crime.”

It is not race-baiting to acknowledge the reality of the “who” and the “why” when it comes to the immigration issue. To not do so makes it virtually impossible to develop a coherent response to the problem.
That said, there are many on both sides of the ideological divide who would make it an issue of race.
Some on the right would have us believe that the brown people are coming and they are going to take all of your stuff and some of the left would have you believe it is an issue of ethnic discrimination in order to achieve political gain.

Ummm… nooooo…
That’s why I laid out the specifics of the case.
There is a danger in extrapolating from the specific to the whole, you know.
“Could any, not all but any, of those who did not support Bush’s amnesty plan have been doing so because of concerns remaining from how the ‘86 amnesty thing went?”
Sure there could be some. But I’d say the overall theme, given the fierce opposition to Pres Bush and the absolute lack of any encompassing proposals that weren’t along the lines of “deport” “self deport” or “WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND?” would argue against that.
Whenever I ask those who assert ‘we need to secure our borders” just how do our borders compare to pre-9-11 and then give some data regarding the current state of security, I pretty much get blank looks or diversions.
On this issue, though, I’m betting Democrats will be much more entertaining of proposals to build another chunk of fence, or hire some more Homeland types to monitor the southern border, than Republicans will be to compromise on a path to citizenship. I’m already hearing opposition from my Texas Congressmen (”they’re taking away jobs from Americans” and all that, just this morning).

Like all pieces of Obama legislation, the President will ignore any recomendations from bipartisan committees. He needs immigration reform to feed the never ending election spin machine. Therefore, as usual, we will get sermons from the bully pulpit demonizing the GOP in order to give clueless democratic candidates something to criticize GOP opponents about in 2014. Man, 69, accused of killing man who went to wrong house (AJC)
A Gwinnett County man is accused of shooting and killing a man who friends said pulled into the wrong driveway.
Phillip Walker Sailors, 69, of Lilburn, was booked into the Gwinnett County jail Sunday afternoon and charged with murder for the death of Rodrigo Abad Diaz, according to jail records and his arrest warrant.
Diaz, 22, was shot in the head Saturday night as he tried to drive away from Sailors’ home on Hillcrest Road in Lilburn, the warrant states.
Now see, in this rootin’-tootin’ gun-crazy world we live in, if somebody you don’t know pulls into your driveway after dark, you just blast ‘em! And ask questions later. Heck, it don’t matter none if they’re trying to pull away. Blast ‘em!

The key will be when PEMEX (the oil/gas monopoly) is finally split and competition is allowed…….. there will be an telecom/internet and energy growth in Mexico that will take them into new heights………… in addition the Mexican middle class would love for Mexico and the US to tweak NAFTA. China has taken alot of Mexican mfg jobs…………….. Mexicans resent China……….. as China labor rates increase it makes sense for the US and Mexico to partner to bring the MFG jobs back to North America for products sold in North America
the key is the US cannot be a bully and try to force Mexico……….we must PARTNER and let them develop the way they want at their pace

All Obama did in that respect was *formalize* a policy that ICE and DHS had been operating under for more than a year. Besides, it’s called “prosecutorial judgment” and it happens every day when a DA declines to prosecute a case or accepts a plea deal.

Obviously the shooter has to accept responsibility for the horrible thing he’s done, but (at the risk of going “we-are-ALL-responsible”) it bears considering why he apparently felt so threatened, in this circumstance.

Jay, you conveniently leave out the fact that only 38 Republicans filibustered the 2007 Immigration reform. 15 Democrats joined in on the effort to block the reform. The Democrats, beginning in 2005, blocked any deal they could so everything would backfire onto President Bush. Social Security Reform, Immigration Reform, etc… Up to the point of the financial collapse, in 2007 and 2008 most bills that made it out of Congress were Democrat bills. Blaming the failure of Immigration reform in 2007 on Bush and the Republicans is not historically true. Backlash from constuencies across America caused the bill to die, including with Democrats.

I say amnesty followed by enforcing border control. After that, actually enforce our immigration laws. Anyone coming is illegally gets deported. 2 of the 4 republicans on the committee of 8 were not even senators when the dream act in 07 came about.
The other two opposed it with reservations about a lack of border security as it was not guaranteed in that proposal which would have allowed for the problem to continue of undocumented people.
This proposal does have an element of finding ways to drastically slow the unlawful immigration into our country.
There are a lot of republicans and democrats who were there in ‘07 are now no longer casting votes on the issues.
We should applaud them for their efforts so far and hope a spirit of bipartisan effort can continue. But as we know their efforts will be fought from both sides all too willing to ask why instead of why not.
As for your representative, as I am not inclined to agree with him as this appears to apply more to those already here and to slow the importation of more without documentation.
Thus those here already have those jobs he speaks of. This bill would reduce the risk of future competition willing to do the job at a lower wage or unwilling but far more likely to be subject of abuses in the workplace. Both monetary and otherwise.
However if it is a concern he has it should be one that is listened to and debated.

That’s quite a post, Lance. “Only” 38 Republicans supported the bill-killing filibuster, and they were joined by 15 Democrats, which of course means it was the Democrats’ fault?
Do I have that logic right?
Likewise, the fact that 34 Democrats voted to end the filibuster, joined by “only” 11 Republicans, no doubt further cements your argument that the Democrats are to blame, correct?

Conservatives do not oppose immigration. They oppose Illegal immigration. Either we are a nations of laws or we are a lawless nation.
You oppose anything that is not you, which is your weakness. That is the reason you can’t compromise, you think you are the chosen people and the rest of us are your lap dogs. Then when you realize you have insulted about 60% of America with your ignorance you want to be misunderstood.
As for a country of laws, you sponsor about every law you can to put someone in jail that is getting in your way, the prisons are over crowded with your movements. You use the law for your own bidding. No Wall Street guy goes to jail yet they totally nuked this country’s economic system, left millions homeless and made billions doing it, but you take one little man crossing the desert at risk of his life mostly for your entertainment and sorry taste for cruelty and you declare war. You are very strange people who love cruelty, are very selfish, mean as snakes and now think there is no judgment day for you actions. Democrats had the advantaqge in the Senate and the House at the time. The bill was not heavily supported by Republicans. Even with that being the case the bill would have made it out of the Senate without Democrats dying for Bush to fail. My math was dead on; my point is that the Democrats at that time were using the same tactics that you now bemoan the Republicans use. The bill was a way of reaching across the aisle, something that Bush rarely did and got credit for when he did it.

Last I checked, the President, with a few very narrow exceptions, has no spending authority in this country.
But if you want to play the Presidential blame game, in order for Obama to move to the head of the class in terms of being a bad fiscal leader, the stock market will have to shed 89% of its value in the next 3 years. Unemployment will need to rise to 25% and international trade will need to decline by half.
If Obama only seeks to take over the number 2 spot, international trade needs to sink by 33%, the stock market needs to shrink by 50% and unemployment only need climb to about 11%.

Maybe we should do two things about the illegals.
1. Open our doors and let as many illegals come into our country as possible.
2. Once they are here, put as many as possible into our Military and let them fight the wars our Military-Industrial Complex so deeply crave.
It would be interesting to see how many illegals would want to come here under those conditions.

prin·ci·ple /ˈprinsəpəl/ Noun
1) A fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.
2) A rule or belief governing one’s personal behavior.
Liberals are apparently an unprincipled lot. There are very clear reasons why we have immigration laws at this point. But to liberals, coming into our country illegally is akin to spitting on the sidewalk (or maybe committing adultery) – NO BIG DEAL. Instead of saying things like Canada and Mexico represent two of our closest friends and allies and giving residents of those countries preferred immigration status above all other people of the world and allowing them to obtain special 2 or 3 year renewable work visas, they would rather just dismiss the law and call criminals non-criminals. And I would bet that not a single liberal would NOT call police if, after coming back from a family vacation, they discovered migrants were illegally residing in their home. Yet they expect the rest of us to do just that.
And THAT is why I detest what liberalism has become these days – it is no longer fighting to right obvious wrongs (like treating people badly for things they cannot help – like their age, gender and the color of their skin). Instead, it is fighting to defend obvious wrongs (perpetrated by people CHOOSING to commit them). That is not liberalism; it is corruption.

I’m on board with a path to citizenship and a conservative.
I like the idea of a process with levels for those already here and can prove their existence prior to.
In other words full blown citizenship should not be granted immediately. As there are no other immigrants without a process. Arriving first then proceeding should not be the preferred or easiest method.
I think a process would also help not eliminate but help reduce either political party from abusing the reform for votes immediately.
However something must be done to address the issue of more people coming into our country undocumented by securing all of our borders and the processes we use to identify who is here and when that are non citizens.
Without doing this it does not matter as we will be right here again in 15-20 years figuring out what to do with the next 11-15 million undocumented residents.

I like the bill presented before Congress. The problem that I see is the pressure that will undoubtedly be applied by constituents like in 2007. A pathway to citizenship is needed to people living here. There are many undocumented immigrants who work hard and pay taxes. I would like to see them be able accounted for. But, I see a similar result from 2007. The minority party in Washington hits paydirt during midterm elections by simply obstructing any success from the majority party; in 2006 and 2010, both parties benefited from simply saying no. Even if this bill survives a filibuster, it will not survive the house.

Towncrier — “But to liberals, coming into our country illegally is akin to spitting on the sidewalk (or maybe committing adultery) – NO BIG DEAL.”
To our government as well, for about the last 50+ years. It’s not the crime (insert emphasis of your choice here) some conservatives seem to want to paint it as. It is a problem, but in a great many cases, our government doesn’t even classify it as a crime.
FWIW, several of us on the left have an ongoing discussion here regarding how a system could be implemented that provided these things:
1) a secure national identity document, high-tech and nigh-impossible to forge
2) a database tied to that document, enabling employers to quickly and easily check the status of prospective employees
3) a secure voting system that could even facilitate secure remote voting and would prevent non-citizens from voting
Far from it being “NO BIG DEAL,” as you say, we have a few concrete ideas on the matter. Not all of us agree, but we have, IMO, a nugget of a good idea. And often, when the topic comes up, we ask one or more conservative posters to join us in our discussion, but almost invariably, at least one conservative objects on grounds of cost. Well, how much is it worth to us as a nation to have secure borders and unforgeable document cards (e.g. for SS and Medicare benefits)? How much is it worth to us as a nation to ensure that voter fraud isn’t taking place? Do we want to do it right, or do we want a half-azzed solution that will see us having this same argument 30 years from now?
The fact of the matter isn’t that we consider such things, as you say, “NO BIG DEAL,” it’s just that we’re not losing our collective mind about it. We *see* the problem. We *agree* that there’s a problem. But we *differ* on what to do about it and how to get there; it’s as simple as that.
Further, about two weeks ago, you berated Jay for what you called mocking and belittling comments about pro-gun individuals, yet here you are, doing the exact same thing yourself — last night about atheists in general and today about liberals in particular. So heal thyself, physician. If it hacks you off so much to see others do it, cool your freakin’ jets and stop doing it yourself.

Jammy Codder -nooooooooooooooooooooo! “Jammy Codder was honest blah, blah blah and right about oil” I did here him say in 1970’something that we would run out of oil in FIVE years. No quite so right on that one. My greatest memory of him was hearing him drone on for two hours at my college graduation about his left wing socialist philosophy. What a bore? The biggest legacy Jammy Codder left was being the most unpopular Prez in history based on the lack of votes he got in the land slide beat down Ronald Reagan put on him. He created a disaster of an economy and the deepest (at that time) recession since the the Great “D”. Mortgage interest were 20% + and real estate was a disaster because no one could afford to buy a house – even if they found a job. Gold was selling at such a high price people were hocking their rings. Inflation was sky high. Right – Jammy Codder was a great Prez. Reminds me of the current times and what we have in office now.

There is an ebb and flow with politics in US History. Even though the Federalists and the Whigs folded, the Democrat party was split between Conservatives and Liberals. In 1974, the Republican party was dead in the water. Nixon left in disgrace, Agnew resigned in disgrace, and Ford was bound to lose in 1976. However, by 1980, Ronald Reagan won and even won control of the Senate. In 2004, there was talk of a permanent GOP majority in both Houses. The Republican and Democratic are the strongest parties in the United States. In fact, 30 Governorships are in Republican hands now.

If the gun lobby keeps up their version of America, we won’t have any students to make loans to, but why worry about that when kids are getting away with a free higher education. True once educated they tend to vote Democrat, but your loose gun laws will solve that for you, not to worry.

Does anyone in their right mind think the cons willl ever say the border is secure?

We can spend a LOT of money trying, but we still can’t do. Build a fence, someone will make a longer ladder. Or they’ll dig under it (they already do that). How would you suggest we secure our water borders? Or secure the air over ANY of our borders? Determined people can fly in, boat in, dig in, be brought in hidden in vehicles. There’s no way we can possibly secure our borders, period. The best we can ever do is make it harder where, currently, it’s too easy and too cheap.

Well McCain did make a slight concession:
“We have to work with the governors and the organizations and citizens on the border states that are the major victims of the broken borders,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) added. He also admitted that “There is no question, there has been a significant reduction in illegal crossings over the past five years.” Indeed, the United States spent $18 billion on immigration enforcement in the 2012 fiscal year, which is more than every other federal law enforcement agency combined.
Also:
Border crossings are at 40-year low: At the same time, illegal border crossings have dropped to their lowest level since the Nixon administration, and net undocumented migration is at or below zero. Meanwhile, annual deportations at a historic high.
– Most parts of the border are already secure: Even with fewer people apprehended at the border, border agents now patrol every single mile of the border every day. The vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security, and there are 21,370 agents, along with six unmanned aircraft systems.

FWIW, I don’t think we can ever perform a *complete* physical closure of all our borders. I just don’t think it’s practical, even with technological tools. That said, I think we can make it less desirable to come here or stay here by securing our labor markets and our public welfare system.
Look, it’s a common conservative assertion that illegals generally come here for public assistance and for work, right? What if there was no way to get a job *unless* you could prove your citizenship or residency beyond a shadow of a doubt? And what if Social Security and Medicare cards were impossible to forge? Yes. It was not HIS bill, but he signed it. Amnesty has been shown to (counter productively) increase illegal immigration. It is dumb. One should never reward bad behavior. Instead, one should incentivize good behavior.
“Fact is it’s businesses that make it possible for illegal aliens to live here not liberals. Its the holier than thou crowd in the suburbs that hire them to mow their lawns, take care of their kids, hire for day labor and eat the food they harvest, and visit the restaurants they work in.”
I don’t do that. And I don’t know many that do. I agree that many on the right are out and out hypocrites, espousing principles they do not uphold. But many liberals don’t support those principles. They are not being hypocritical; they are being unprincipled.
“Then you bring in adultery to the conversation as if it is just another liberal thing, ignoring the fact that the Baptist church is filled with members that have committed adultery. How else can you account for the outrageous divorce numbers that plague the Baptist church?”

Mick _ Ignorance precedes you – The reason interest are so low is BECAUSE we are on the edge of the Great “D” II of 2013…… you know the FISCAL CLIFF that no one has a plan to stop. If interest were raised now the INTEREST rate on the $16,000,000,000,000 + Fed debt would increase throwing YOU over the FISCAL CLIFF that much faster. The stock market is going up because interest are so low on CD’s and bonds and real estate is a disaster. there is no where else to invest but GOLD and precious metals that are now over valued. The stock market is the last resort. The market is rising from the deep losses it has absorbed but is far from it’s all time high. This rise in the stock market is a sucker play however as those fleeing to the market will be crushed by the health care bubble (which is the only sector still going up because it is propped up financially through gub’ment dollars) The Social Security System is the greatest PONZI scheme of all time. The final mother of all bubbles will be the GREAT BOND BUBBLE as the gub’ment will default on loans from Japan and China and you will still get your check in the mail from Obama but the banks will stamp on it INSUFFICIENT FUNDS and the gub’ment’s CREDIT CARD will be MAXED out. Fair enough. Much of the plan that we sometimes discuss is predicated on securing our labor markets and the privileges that we extend to citizens by means of some sort of national identity document (e.g. a high-tech national ID card). I suggested at one time that resident aliens could be given similar cards, but that theirs wouldn’t entitle them to vote or to receive public assistance. The cards could also serve as work-authorization documents, for those aliens who have formal authorization.
Something like this would take years to implement, though. and it wouldn’t be cheap to do.

The way the border is set up, we make it as easy as possible for goods and people to cross with as little delay as possible. This helps our “just in time” business model since most major companies have gone away from warehousing goods. You also have major companies that will send a worker here for 2 days for meetings and such.
If we tighten down the border to the point where it’s “secure”, you’re going to see America look like the old East Germany where you’re likely to be stopped and have your “papers” checked every 30 steps. Instead of being able to land on a plane and leave the airport within 10-20 minutes of arrival, you’re likely going to be in the airport for hours to clear immigration and customs. Upon completing a cruise, you won’t be able to just walk off the ship as you’ll have to clear a tighter immigration policy.
That’s what I meant by giving up personal freedoms. This I know first hand as I do this stuff for a living.

One day (god willing) you will be that elderly person who has worked and earned your social security. That was easy…and by the way the debt is actually starting to decrease as more people are employed, that’s the real key here to cut the debt – employment! I have discussed immigration reform with you before, JHM. And I think probably the two of us would could agree on a common sense solution. But what I think you fail to realize (and probably what I fail to realize) is that you and I are not a typical liberal and conservative. From what all I read, listening to many liberals, I think that they really make little of the fact that millions of people have illegally and immorally entered our country ahead of those trying to do it the proper way. It really bothers me. Principles really matter. On the other hand, I know there are a LOT of conservative politician and talking heads that place undue emphasis upon “securing the borders” and not nearly enough emphasis upon taking away the incentive for people to come here (in agreement with your point). They are advocating untenable solutions to problems that have not proven to be cost effective. That bothers me as well (and probably is the BIGGEST reason the GOP is in such trouble).
“Further, about two weeks ago, you berated Jay for what you called mocking and belittling comments about pro-gun individuals, yet here you are, doing the exact same thing yourself — last night about atheists in general and today about liberals in particular.”
I don’t think he was “mocking” anyone and neither certainly was I (as Towncrier). I was expressing my honest beliefs. I will stipulate that many atheists strive to be “moral” in some fashion (you included). But a number do not. And, were I to be an atheist, I would fall into the latter camp – like Dostoevsky apparently would have. To me, that is simply a better logical expression of atheism. I would see no compelling reason to be moral – only to act moral when needed as a form of self preservation (until such time I no longer desired to live and then would end it all).

Mick – I do know and have studied the Social Security system. You are correct to say that Social Security is paid in to by the beneficiaries – it is not a hand out from the gub’ment……. there are some exceptions to this that I won’t get in to here because some checks received (millions of dollars) were never paid in by the recipients. By PONZI scheme I mean that there will soon be more dollars going out than coming in. The population will be “top heavy” with more receiving dollars than paying in due to the aging population. And another little situation I must mention – the Congress has raided the S.S. to pay for other social programs. There is no great fund of money being saved up for later payments. What comes in goes out. Do you understand what I am saying? There is no nest egg built up and stored in the bank to pay out. It has been illegally spent on wasteful gub’ment. We have been robbed! With a PONZI scheme enough money has to b collected to pay out orit will collapse. Thus S.S. is a great PONZI scheme ’cause the Congress raided the funds.

The prevailing complaint I hear most often from liberal quarters is that conservatives make the illegosos into the bad guys while not pressing harder to make those who *employ* them pay a serious price. A common analogy I hear is that an illegoso is like a drug user, while an employer who looks the other way when an illegoso asks for a job is like the drug *pusher.* In the grand scheme of things, who’s more dangerous? The guy with an ounce of weed or the guy selling weed, special K, oxycontin, meth, heroin and X on your streetcorner? From where I’m standing, liberals want the solution to start at the *other* end of the chain; e.g. jail some employers and watch other employers start to straighten up.
“On the other hand, I know there are a LOT of conservative politician and talking heads that place undue emphasis upon “securing the borders” and not nearly enough emphasis upon taking away the incentive for people to come here (in agreement with your point). They are advocating untenable solutions to problems that have not proven to be cost effective. That bothers me as well (and probably is the BIGGEST reason the GOP is in such trouble).”
Agreed.
“And, were I to be an atheist, I would fall into the latter camp – like Dostoevsky apparently would have. To me, that is simply a better logical expression of atheism. I would see no compelling reason to be moral – only to act moral when needed as a form of self preservation (until such time I no longer desired to live and then would end it all).”
We need to have an extended discussion on the utility of morality in the lives of atheists, you and I. I sincerely think you would find it eye-opening.

Been there, done that, and I have the uniform as proof!!!
Immigration law is so complex, some piecemeal half-assed effort will not solve our problems. More than likely, the system will get screwed up even more.

Fine….but we the people will demand to be first in line to be paid, all other creditors get in line…still it won’t have to come to that with a few simple fixes – raising the cap for starters. Then, after the baby boomers are extinct, things will level out for future recipients, so…the next 30 years or so just need to be bridged…

Kcin – Can’t link a scandal hidden by the left. It’s been long dead and buried and the witnesses that lived in the shacks- mostly long dead too. I saw it – no rumor. Politicians will do anything to get elected, stay elected and stay in POWER. The Carter Center is funded by donations and government money to further promote the myth. Jammy Codder’s dream was to save the world with YOUR money.

Mick – I wish you were right but the Baby Boomers will be followed by a still larger group of elderly. All this health care is making people live longer – not have a better QUALITY of life – just live longer. Did you know that 80% of all health care costs come in the last SIX MONTHS of life. Death is a big money racket. Keeping people alive a few more months costs a fortune.

“smarter enforcement, a pathway to earn citizenship, improvements in the legal immigration system so that we continue to be a magnet for the best and the brightest all around the world.” –President Obama
Yea, cause we don’t already have a pathway to citizenship and the “best and the brightest” from Mexico are pouring across our border eager as hell to mow our lawns, paint our homes, and pick our crops. That’s what all the world’s “best” and “brightest” do, right libs?!!!
What a joke. It’s about getting votes and nothing more. PERIOD.

In any event, what other countries do is irrelevant to the point of what *we* are doing *right now.*

Why is it that we don’t hear this retort when the debate is healthcare or gun control?

Checking in after the dictator gets another 4 years, what is the difference between a criminal and a tea party member, extortion is a crime last I looked and guns go well with this plot. I am waiting any day for a South Carolina congressman to whip out his gun and shoot a hole in the ceiling of the capital while yelling liar at the top of his lungs. You think that guy was drunk? Only explanation for being that out of control yet he can carry a gun probably had one on him at the time.

TBG — “Why is it that we don’t hear this retort when the debate is healthcare or gun control?”
Because I’m using it ironically. Sometimes conservatives HATE considering how things are done in other countries and sometimes they urgently WANT us to consider how things are done in other countries. Both sides do it, and neither side is blameless in tossing that football around.

I can see the story line now if these conservatives get their way:
The President was two days late for the ceremony. He explained that he had been put on a “milk run” Greyhound bus as an economy measure.

IN 1986 WE ALLOWED 8 MILLION ILLEGALS TO BECOME OVERNIGHT CITIZENS. THE LAW PASSED BECAUSE THEY SAID WE WOULD NEVER AGAIN HAVE A PROBLEM. AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT REMEMBERS THIS?
