“I believe we can get it done. I’ll see you at the bill signing.”
– President George W. Bush in 2007,
expressing confidence in passage of a
major immigration reform package
———————————
Of course, the bill signing envisioned by President Bush never did take place. Opposition from within his own party quickly doomed the measure, and the relationship between Republicans and Hispanic Americans has been all downhill ever since.
In 2004, Bush attracted 44 percent of the Hispanic vote on his way to re-election. In 2008, after the demise of the immigration bill, John McCain pulled just 31 percent. Mitt Romney, whose solution to the problem was self-deportation, got 27 percent in 2012. An ever-declining percentage of a fast-growing demographic group is a long-term formula for failure, as McCain himself reminded his party Monday.
“If we continue to polarize the Latino/Hispanic vote,” the Arizona senator said on CNN, “the demographics indicate that our chances of being in the majority are minimal.”
So this week, McCain joined seven other U.S. senators — an equal mix of Republicans and Democrats — in announcing agreement on a broad, comprehensive immigration-reform package. Marco Rubio of Florida, a potential GOP presidential contender in 2016, was also among the group. And while that ought to be encouraging, the truth is that conservatives and liberals seem to have very different ideas about the details of the proposal, which at this point exists only as a vague description of principles.

The Hispanic Leadership Network, an offshoot of a major Republican SuperPAC, sent a memo to congressional Republicans this week, offering a series of friendly reminders about how to talk about immigration reform in public.
Such broad descriptive language can sidestep or paper over major policy differences, but those differences become glaringly apparent once you start putting it into legislative language of “shall” and “shall not”. In one indication of the work ahead, senators don’t expect to have an actual bill to introduce until the end of March, and even that schedule is probably optimistic.
McCain, Rubio and other prominent Republicans know that their party would be damaged permanently if it is seen to be blocking yet another effort at immigration reform. Yet a different bloc of Republicans, most of them in the House, remains committed to oppose anything that might offer amnesty or a path to citizenship for those who came here illegally.
President Obama’s strained relationship with House Republicans adds another layer of difficulty to the problem. The president is scheduled to announce his own immigration-reform package today in Nevada, which is also the home state of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Not coincidentally, the growing Latino vote has been crucial in turning Nevada from a red state to a blue state in the last two presidential elections.
Obama has promised to make immigration reform a primary goal of his second term in office, and like Reid, he’s under pressure to produce. However, he also recognizes that the pressure on Republicans is even more intense. The longer this problem remains unresolved, leaving some 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants in legal limbo, the more difficult it becomes for the GOP.
In Georgia, for example, non-white Hispanics make up an estimated 9 percent of the population, but they comprised barely 1 percent of the turnout in the 2012 election. Regardless of what happens in Washington, that second number is going to rise and rise quickly in future election cycles, and if Republicans can’t at least be competitive for that vote, things get very difficult.

” BO has odds in his favor to go down as worst fiscal president in history”
Last I checked, the President, with a few very narrow exceptions, has no spending authority in this country.
But if you want to play the Presidential blame game, in order for Obama to move to the head of the class in terms of being a bad fiscal leader, the stock market will have to shed 89% of its value in the next 3 years. Unemployment will need to rise to 25% and international trade will need to decline by half.
If Obama only seeks to take over the number 2 spot, international trade needs to sink by 33%, the stock market needs to shrink by 50% and unemployment only need climb to about 11%.

1. Open our doors and let as many illegals come into our country as possible.

It would be interesting to see how many illegals would want to come here under those conditions.

prin·ci·ple /ˈprinsəpəl/ Noun
1) A fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.
2) A rule or belief governing one’s personal behavior.
Liberals are apparently an unprincipled lot. There are very clear reasons why we have immigration laws at this point. But to liberals, coming into our country illegally is akin to spitting on the sidewalk (or maybe committing adultery) – NO BIG DEAL. Instead of saying things like Canada and Mexico represent two of our closest friends and allies and giving residents of those countries preferred immigration status above all other people of the world and allowing them to obtain special 2 or 3 year renewable work visas, they would rather just dismiss the law and call criminals non-criminals. And I would bet that not a single liberal would NOT call police if, after coming back from a family vacation, they discovered migrants were illegally residing in their home. Yet they expect the rest of us to do just that.
And THAT is why I detest what liberalism has become these days – it is no longer fighting to right obvious wrongs (like treating people badly for things they cannot help – like their age, gender and the color of their skin). Instead, it is fighting to defend obvious wrongs (perpetrated by people CHOOSING to commit them). That is not liberalism; it is corruption.

I’m on board with a path to citizenship and a conservative.
I like the idea of a process with levels for those already here and can prove their existence prior to.
In other words full blown citizenship should not be granted immediately. As there are no other immigrants without a process. Arriving first then proceeding should not be the preferred or easiest method.
I think a process would also help not eliminate but help reduce either political party from abusing the reform for votes immediately.
However something must be done to address the issue of more people coming into our country undocumented by securing all of our borders and the processes we use to identify who is here and when that are non citizens.
Without doing this it does not matter as we will be right here again in 15-20 years figuring out what to do with the next 11-15 million undocumented residents.

I like the bill presented before Congress. The problem that I see is the pressure that will undoubtedly be applied by constituents like in 2007. A pathway to citizenship is needed to people living here. There are many undocumented immigrants who work hard and pay taxes. I would like to see them be able accounted for. But, I see a similar result from 2007. The minority party in Washington hits paydirt during midterm elections by simply obstructing any success from the majority party; in 2006 and 2010, both parties benefited from simply saying no. Even if this bill survives a filibuster, it will not survive the house.

We live in a greater nation than our forefathers or at least as far back as the 19th century, because billions of dirty dollars can’t turn the tide of truth as was the custom for centuries. If you are good in America you will do well, but you have to be honest, the days of the right championing slavery, integration, pirates on Wall Street and any other immoral cause of the day while pretending to be the Christian Right is watching a sunset. Even Andy Stanley is seeing the writing on the wall. You can actually believe in God without your soul and body being owned by the KKK and NRA. Imagine…

He has MY respect. That might not be as important to you, though.
I was going to say–it’s absolutely weird how some online conservatives seem to think most Americans regard Jimmy Carter with anything but fondness. Yes, there are some whiners who have tried to make him out to be some kind of anti-Semitic monster because he thinks Palestinians are human beings, but I’d wager most Americans think of him as an honest, devout, hard-working man who builds houses for poor people and tries to keep warring factions from killing one another.
Anyway, Obama won the second term, so the RBs of this world can put away those stupid “Welcome Back” t-shirts.

The simple, irrefutable fact is that you’re giving a pass to lawbreakers. And since precedents matter where do you draw the line? Illegal aliens today, maybe drug traffickers and sex offenders tomorrow.

Towncrier — “But to liberals, coming into our country illegally is akin to spitting on the sidewalk (or maybe committing adultery) – NO BIG DEAL.”
To our government as well, for about the last 50+ years. It’s not the crime (insert emphasis of your choice here) some conservatives seem to want to paint it as. It is a problem, but in a great many cases, our government doesn’t even classify it as a crime.
FWIW, several of us on the left have an ongoing discussion here regarding how a system could be implemented that provided these things:
1) a secure national identity document, high-tech and nigh-impossible to forge
2) a database tied to that document, enabling employers to quickly and easily check the status of prospective employees
3) a secure voting system that could even facilitate secure remote voting and would prevent non-citizens from voting
Far from it being “NO BIG DEAL,” as you say, we have a few concrete ideas on the matter. Not all of us agree, but we have, IMO, a nugget of a good idea. And often, when the topic comes up, we ask one or more conservative posters to join us in our discussion, but almost invariably, at least one conservative objects on grounds of cost. Well, how much is it worth to us as a nation to have secure borders and unforgeable document cards (e.g. for SS and Medicare benefits)? How much is it worth to us as a nation to ensure that voter fraud isn’t taking place? Do we want to do it right, or do we want a half-azzed solution that will see us having this same argument 30 years from now?
The fact of the matter isn’t that we consider such things, as you say, “NO BIG DEAL,” it’s just that we’re not losing our collective mind about it. We *see* the problem. We *agree* that there’s a problem. But we *differ* on what to do about it and how to get there; it’s as simple as that.
Further, about two weeks ago, you berated Jay for what you called mocking and belittling comments about pro-gun individuals, yet here you are, doing the exact same thing yourself — last night about atheists in general and today about liberals in particular. So heal thyself, physician. If it hacks you off so much to see others do it, cool your freakin’ jets and stop doing it yourself.
You do both your ideological side and mine a distinct disservice when you blithely make assertions about what other groups — to which you don’t even belong — think and believe.

Jammy Codder -nooooooooooooooooooooo! “Jammy Codder was honest blah, blah blah and right about oil” I did here him say in 1970’something that we would run out of oil in FIVE years. No quite so right on that one. My greatest memory of him was hearing him drone on for two hours at my college graduation about his left wing socialist philosophy. What a bore? The biggest legacy Jammy Codder left was being the most unpopular Prez in history based on the lack of votes he got in the land slide beat down Ronald Reagan put on him. He created a disaster of an economy and the deepest (at that time) recession since the the Great “D”. Mortgage interest were 20% + and real estate was a disaster because no one could afford to buy a house – even if they found a job. Gold was selling at such a high price people were hocking their rings. Inflation was sky high. Right – Jammy Codder was a great Prez. Reminds me of the current times and what we have in office now.

There is an ebb and flow with politics in US History. Even though the Federalists and the Whigs folded, the Democrat party was split between Conservatives and Liberals. In 1974, the Republican party was dead in the water. Nixon left in disgrace, Agnew resigned in disgrace, and Ford was bound to lose in 1976. However, by 1980, Ronald Reagan won and even won control of the Senate. In 2004, there was talk of a permanent GOP majority in both Houses. The Republican and Democratic are the strongest parties in the United States. In fact, 30 Governorships are in Republican hands now.
