Northeast conservative wants divorce from GOP
David Brooks, the conservative columnist for the New York Times, looks at the current state of affairs and wants a divorce, or at least a trial separation:
“Can current Republicans change their underlying mentality to adapt to these realities? Intellectual history says no. People almost never change their underlying narratives or unconscious frameworks. Moreover, in the South and rural West, where most Republicans are from, the (belief that government is the problem) has deep historic and psychological roots. Anti-Washington, anti-urban sentiment has characterized those cultures for decades.
It’s probably futile to try to change current Republicans. It’s smarter to build a new wing of the Republican Party, one that can compete in the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic states, in the upper Midwest and along the West Coast. It’s smarter to build a new division that is different the way the Westin is different than the Sheraton.
The second GOP … would be filled with people who recoiled at President Obama’s second Inaugural Address because of its excessive faith in centralized power, but who don’t share the absolute anti-government story of the current GOP.
Would a coastal and Midwestern GOP sit easily with the Southern and Western one? No, but majority parties are usually coalitions of the incompatible. This is really the only chance Republicans have.
The question is: Who’s going to build a second GOP?”
I don’t have an answer for him. Maybe Chris Christie? Somehow, though, I have a feeling this is all going to end up being Barack Obama’s fault.

Brooks is a traitor just like Taxby Shameless. Tea Party Republicans are quickly and rightfully taking the steering wheel of the party away from failed, phony RINOs. We will clearly see this success in next year’s elections when a band of solid, God-fearing Tea Party folk righteously win seat after seat after seat thus taking full ownership of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate. Once that occurs, WE THE PEOPLE (Tea Party Republicans/those with common sense) will finally have a voice in our government. WE will dismantle “King” Hussein Obama’s failed socialistic policies, line by line by line. Then, in 2016, WE will elect a Tea Party Republican president WHO WILL put this once-free nation on the path to prosperity.

Interesting that conservatives question whether Brooks is a conservative or not. Some have even labeled him center-left.
In the past 6 presidential elections, the Democratic Party has won the popular vote 5 out of 6 elections, mainly by appealing to the center. In the previous 6 elections, the roles were reversed. The GOP took 5 of 6 popular vote counts by appealing to the center. Under Reagan, you even had the “Reagan Democrats” or Blue Dogs.
Now, it seems as though the GOP is running from the center faster than Usain Bolt can turn the corner on the anchor leg of the 4×100. The further they run from the center, the more ground they cede to the Democrats. I can’t recall any battle ever won by a group using retreat as the sole tactic.

In other words, David Brooks thinks the government has a role to play in a civilized nations.
He doesn’t think all taxes are theft.
He doesn’t think black people are inherently criminals.
He doesn’t believe gay people are going to hell.
He doesn’t believe abortion is never morally justifiable, no matter what.
He probably doesn’t want teachers all to carry guns.
He doesn’t believe we should deport or jail every undocumented immigrant.
He doesn’t believe the earth is only 4,000 years old and global warming is a conspiracy.
He doesn’t believe that everyone who is poor has only their own laziness to blame.
He doesn’t think we should outlaw mosques or screen everyone with a turban at the airport.
In other words, he is a reasonable, rational thinker. He values the free market over a highly regulated one. He believes government should be relatively limited. He thinks individual responsibility is not stressed enough in alleviating poverty. This makes him a conservative. I hope the above list illustrates how (frankly) stupid, illogical, and extreme the right wing “base” of this country has become.

Food for thought. Pub/Cons, take heart! A divorce may not be necessary — but rather a marriage with Blue Dog, moderate, and center right middle class Dems fleeing the consequences of the Liberal Manifesto espoused by Obama in his inaugural address — after suffering yet another deep recession, or four more years of the slow growth, high unemployment economy.
Pub/Cons: Do you really have the courage of your convictions? Do you truly believe that a spending addicted, all controlling and more centralized government, expanding exponentially and overseeing an expanding welfare state / nanny state / entitlement state, and requiring annual trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see in order to survive — is really not sustainable and headed for the dust bin of economic history if nothing is done? Do you really believe that? Or is it just the only political rhetoric that you can find to hurl against the currently smug and very self-satisfied Dem/Libs?
If you really do believe that America is on a disasterous path and that it is only a short matter of time that the consequences of this economic folly will catch up with us, then let your convictions give you encouragement. We are in a precarious place now where just a 1% increase in interest rates or a 2% or 3% increase in inflation would have huge economic consequences. But, Obama and the Dem/Libs are not only determned to stay on this path, but expand it.
If your principles and convictions are sound, there will not be a Democrat president elected in 2016, male or female. And depending on the course of events, the Pub/Cons could control Congress entirely in 2014. If your principles and convictions about government and the economy are wrong . . . then say hello to Madame President Clinton in 2016.

Faulkner is not always the easiest to read and, by his own admission, some of his stuff is pure commercial pandering. The reason I suggest The Reivers is that he once said that he spent his entire career so he could write it. It is just plain story telling for the fun of it. For his more serious, read “Intruder in the Dust.” It’s accessible to the general reader and the Faulkner “novice.”

Oh, Fred, if you do make the pie crust from scratch remember to prepare it without completely obliterating the particles of lard, I think you’ll find that the scratch crusts are definitely better, but they do take time and PATIENCE…just in case you wanted to know..

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer confidence plunged in January to its lowest level in more than a year, reflecting higher Social Security taxes that left Americans with less take-home pay.
The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index dropped to 58.6 in January. That’s down from 66.7 in December and the lowest since November 2011.’
