VERY OFF TOPIC

“Jay’s blog, Jay’s rules.” We’ve all heard it, more than a few of us have posted it as a reminder to those who wish to break them.

Finding myself in violation of those rules, over the weekend, and getting a red card, made me ponder what is meant by “name calling.” I will not attempt to skirt the rules by quoting what I’d posted Saturday morning, that elicited Jay’s penalty, save to say it was short, mildly profane (nothing that isn’t uttered on broadcast TV for years, now) and specific to one contributor.

It’s that last bit that got me booted.

If I have any issue to take with this policy it is this seeming imbalance: Just about any kind of post can be left here that insults a real or imagined group of people. Many of these insults are, indeed, directed toward specific individuals without actually naming those individuals. Thus, the poster can skirt the “no name-calling” rule, by simply writing “Your kind are idiots.”

Often as not, though, it is something softer than that. There are lots of indirect insults like (just to pick one that popped up here, and I’m not picking on this guy in particular) TC’s @ 2.51, where he writes:

[Jay's] aim was to cast aspersions upon the GOP, the “facts” be damned. Judging from his columns, Jay is, first and foremost, a propagandist.

That’s not just a knock against the guy who host’s TC’s comments. It’s a knock against those of us who find Jay’s column insightful. It’s a way TC can call us mindless sheep, following a mere “propagandist.”

I humbly submit that such insults are, if anything, more abusive, and less conducive to advancing whatever higher purpose these online debates are supposed to serve, than simple calling-out of foolish individuals.

This submission isn’t intended in any way to suggest that Jay was wrong to red-card me. It was the right thing for him to do. It’s just that I had a bit of time to think about it, and while I’m certainly repentant for having lost my temper and posting something that wasn’t the least bit bright, I do think that we ought to self-police these posts to encourage people to spend less time insulting groups for real or imagined personal shortcomings, less time attacking negative aspects of the opposition in general, and more time supporting our own positions with useful supporting data.

And to that end, I’ll try to hold up my end and practice what I preach, henceforth. Let me know how I’m doing on that score, if any of you feel like it.

If Georgia is 55% white, it seems entirely possible to get 6% of whites to vote Democratic. It’s strange that our elections are so skewed. That means every single white person plus a few Hispanics or maybe blacks must be voting alongside the whites, for Republicans to get 60% of the vote. That sounds questionable. I wonder if our voting machines are rigged.

Lynnie Gal @ 3.09, I think your numbers are a tad off, but you’re certainly on to something. I’ve pointed out time and again that if ALL of GA’s voters were as motivated as they were in 2008 (when Obama got 47% of the vote), in subsequent elections–both mid-terms and generals–then the GOP is going to find itself needing to fight a lot harder than they do at present to win.

For example, I don’t think Saxby’s Senate seat is going to be safe at all, IF (and it’s a huge if) ALL of GA’s voters are motivated to cast a vote in a mid-term. Of course, the Dems would have to field a credible challenger and the national party would have to put some resources into it–and if the first thing doesn’t happen, the second certainly won’t.

That or a family member buys it for them in which case they should be held responsible for the crimes committed as well. Just think if we did that what a difference it would make.

This column is a good example. He is implying that I am a racist and sexist. That is objectionable. It gets an emotional rise out of me.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, sfd. But surely you must acknowledge that many of Jay’s columns – as evidenced by the language used therein (employing words or phrases like “FOX-bots”, “mythological claptrap” and so on) – are themselves inflammatory.

Actually, I was just thinking about replying to Fred’s post @ 3.28 and gently remind him of the non-helpfulness of a term like “Foxbot.” Although I am not sure that “mythological claptrap” qualifies–he’s entitled to opine about belief systems, after all.

Georgia is about to appoint another white person to a high level state position, University of Georgia presidency, Jere Morehead.

The hypocrisy of many around these blogs is truly amazing. Since Deal took over has any of his appointments been a person of color? Has any state vacancy of a high level position been filled by a person of color? Mayor Reed has filled Atlanta positions with white people, (so has DeKalb County,) yet when Reed does fill a position with a black person the ajc blogs go absolutely crazy with people screaming “Atlanta only hires blacks.”

A glaring double standard. A lot of you are outraged at Jay for this blog entry, but are right in the thick of it when Reed appoints a black person.

Two thirds of the population is white male or female.
But 57% of the peeps are under 40. 1.00-57% = 43% over 40
That means one half (0.5) of 67% X 43% = ‘white males over 40′

That means soon white males over 40 will be <15% of the population.
I think the cons should go after that demographic exclusively.

That simply means that Georgia Democrats are just as consistent as Georgia Republicans. The GOP at the state level and Fed level are both 100% White. The Dems are 80% Black on the Fed level and 72% Black on the State level.

Do I REALLY need to go search for video clips of talking heads in various media saying as much to prove that to you? IF that is true of the GOP, then why is it NOT true of Obama? But if it is NOT true, but just the way things have thus far shaken out (like over 90% of blacks voting Democratic, which is itself a bizarre statistic given how many blacks are fairly religious), then why would you at least not throw in some disclaimers to indicate you are not mindlessly parroting a liberal meme?

Aquagirl – It’s like watching a drunk stumble out of his wrecked car holllering he doesn’t have a drinking problem, the damn tree ran in front of the car.

Once my neighbors daughter forgot to pull the parking brake and left the car in nuetral….it rolled down their drive way and into my bedroom..
after a couple days I called their car insurance to see why there was a delay in my claim..they said they “were trying to determine who was at fault”..,apparently they thought I may have left my house in the middle of the road

Have you seen what happens to a black person or woman if they ackowledge as being a Republican/Conservative? Look what Morehouse said about Herman Cain. He was set to possibly become the 1st black president and they dismissed him because he wasn’t a Democrat. Every shade of Democrat referred to him as a modern day Uncle Tom. Look at RG3 and the black ESPN analyst who said, “He is a cornball brother and he is not one of us.” all because he was reported as being a Republican. The same goes for women, but it is done with the creative marketing of this imaginary “War on Women”. Look what was done to Palin? I’m not a fan of hers but she was torn apart mainly for being a Republican. Here we have women like Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer who all show their stupidity on a daily basis yet they fall under the safety of the Democrat umbrella. Republicans are plenty to blame for being too stupid to figure it out, but Democrats have been a major player in created the percentages. It’s like throwing trash in your neighbor’s yard and then screaming, “Litterbug” at them as you pick it up.

So I will admit Jay has a point here, but as usual he only looks at half the picture. The bigger picture shows white males are far over represented in the Georgia Republican party, and black males are far over represented in the Georgia Democrat party.

Is it because the Republicans are unwelcoming to non-white / male? Maybe partially. Is it because the Democrats have done a great job demagoguing and dividing by race & gender? Absolutely.

I’d have liked to have seen the Democratic caucus pre-1965…wouldn’t have even had the woman, much less any minorities.
Whites are losing power every day in this country, have been for decades as demographics (birth rates and migrations) aren’t in their favor. The Republicans reflect this fact. They can either adapt or go the way of the dodo bird (I don’t mean turn Democrat when I use the word ‘dodo’).
But espousing a policy of getting a lot more from the government than you’ll ever give it means the Dems will be in charge for a very short time, as country will be down the toilet within a short time period.

I personally would like to have more Blacks and Hispanics to believe in self reliance, individuality and family values just as I would like to have more whites beliieve in social programs and help for the needy. As a white male , I don’t need any bragging point to attach to my race, I am a father, a son, pretty good at both;my kids go to private schools, I work hard and believe in education. I don’t own a dime to anyone except my mortgage and I pay my visa off entirely each month. Somehow, Jay thinks that a group of white males should be an embarassment to this country and the repubs..we’ll go on and be philanthropists and fathers and etc. We try to grow and evolve and can do better, but I’m OK in my white skin and as a republican because that is not what defines me. You mistake me, Madame Godzilla (boy does it sound weird saying that!). I believe Cain was definitely unqualified for the job and probably would never have voted for him (I certainly didn’t in the primary). My point is that just as Cain was unqualified to hold office, so are a whole lot of other people (black AND white). So it is, IMO, unfair to single him out as being an unqualified black candidate when there are many similarly unqualified Democratic black politicians. That would be called hypocrisy.

My guess is that they reflect the demographics of their districts. You shouldn’t compare the makeup of a whole state with the makeup of the representatives of one party. Also, how many women have run but not gotten elected in the State Republican party? I don’t l know the answer but if they don’t run you can’t elect them. Maybe women are just smarter than men, and don’t want any part of all the craziness that goes on in the state and federal governments. I know I don’t. Honestly, I just sit here and think “what idiots!”

That Salon piece – my personal, limited experience has been women who’ve had abortions do not treat it casually as many anti-abortionists claim. I’ve also found women who’ve had abortions who, when trying to get pregnant or having had a baby, have tempered their views.

As far as the ‘how a woman feels part” – not sure I understand the full ramifications of that. Which is pretty much why I’ve said I’m okay with current law -okay, as of a few years ago until states like mine began legislating for religious reasons – that sets guidelines by number of weeks and exceptions for later weeks and leaves it up to the woman without having her justify anything to anyone. I’ve even posted I can see updating Roe v Wade timelines based upon advances in medical technology over the last 40 years. I’ve also said it’s as much about attitude as anything, but it’s not my place to impose my attitude on anyone else.

I’d just as soon keep it on a topic level and fully understand you citing your interpretation of Christian thought, as that’s what my question was. I’ve said I’ve thought about it for a while, but I do have a view that makes intellectual sense to me (and I’ve read many who give their interpretation of a Biblically-based view, some of which I think is supported and some of which I think leaves the trunk and goes way out on the end branches) but I’m just looking for ideas I may not have encountered before.

But as I said, I’m going to have to leave in a bit but I will look up whatever gets posted.

As far as my view of the Bible, that’s a topic for another day. History, allegory, symbolic, metaphysical, contemporary practices couched in or validated as God’s commands… the whole way overall Christian dogma was set by essentially a majority vote at a conference that had heavy political overtones… why some views were accepted and some weren’t (Jesus as divine or Jesus as man became divine)… then the resultant interpretations that developed between East and West… then along comes the western Reformation.. and in the last couple hundred years along come American Protestants with some remarkable spins on things that are portrayed as truth that’s always been…. I’m just interested in it and understanding why some believe as they do.

If you don’t believe in the Bible, then I can really see no reason to limit abortions at all. In a godless world, I really don’t know why we would hold on to many of the Judeo-Christian values and morals we have codified in law. From that vantage point, from a logical standpoint, I don’t see much point in traditional morality at all. It is – like humanity itself – nothing more than a sandcastle before the ocean of time. Nothing is consequential. Helping an old lady across the street is really, in the end, no different from axe-murdering her. All is meaningless, as Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes.

Seems to me this is an argument never to be won because it’s an emotional one. The left always reminds the right that we are racists because of the color of our sides groups (but only if the group is white). Seems to me what Jay is saying is that a white person is incapable of representing anyone other than another white person. I’m not sure how to be colorblind when we’re constantly being told that there has to be the right mix of colors to really be colorblind. If I mention the fact that the percentage of crime committed by blacks far exceeds their percentage of population, just a fact, all hell breaks out. The only facts here are the racial percentages of people in the state and the makeup of the GOP caucus, Everything else is just an emotional argument never to be won. The kind of argument democrats like.

Nah @josef, I wasn’t…and that really was my dilemma. I know the ADL is fairly diverse actually, so it didn’t do a good job of making that point that you would expect an organization named after the group of people to actually be run by and lobby for that group of people as in the case of GLAAD. Black Panthers, etc.. “LaRaza”, well…the Spanish name kinda gives it away.

Honestly, I had no idea that the “Jewish League” leaned in any particular direction…or even that it was “real”. It does though sound like it would in fact be made up of Jews (the “face” so to speak). Being a bit elementary to make the point to the other poster.

As for the idea I have that there is little reason to be “moral” in a godless universe, it is not original with me. I can’t remember how or when the idea came to me, but it may have been from reading some of Dostoyevsky’s novels. In one of his letter he writes:

The link depicts a Black man in a KKK robe, who doesn’t know he is Black because he has never SEEN himself. He is blind. Furthermore, the Whites he is among do not know he is actually Black because they have always seen in under the hood and robe. Of course later on in his diatribe his hood comes off.

I think you mean God (instead of “religion”). If you boil water every day and (without knowledge of the atomic activity involved) observe that steam arises on every occasion, without fail – is the perceived effect enough for you to posit a cause? Similarly, as I said earlier, is the immense complexity and orderliness of the universe and life on earth sufficient to posit a cause in the form of a creative intelligence (as opposed to highly improbable and random chance)? The ONLY reason someone like you rejects the most obvious and simplest explanation is because you reject the idea of a supreme being as presented in religious texts and, more significantly, are unable to make sense of the so-called problem of evil. To argue with a straight face that all of this is result of a vast number of highly improbable happy accidents is pure idiocy. It is, instead, an alternate explanation for the traditional one for reasons entirely unrelated to scientific evidence. It’s more like “I won’t believe God exists so how can I account for the universe and life?”
