As my colleague Jim Galloway first reported, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss will soon announce that he will not seek re-election in 2014.
Georgia conservatives are already taking credit for the decision, arguing that they pushed “Taxby” into retirement. And they probably did. The senator has a very conservative voting record, but not conservative enough for many in his party. His admission that maybe, just maybe, the Republicans would have to accept higher taxes as a necessary evil made him unacceptable in their eyes, guaranteeing a bitter primary fight.
I doubt Chambliss will admit that internal party dissent played a role in his decision. He might say that by announcing so early, he allows himself to devote the next two years to trying to solve problems in Washington. He’ll probably also tell us that if he had wanted to run again, he’s certain that he would have won.
However, few will believe him, and his departure marks another step in his party’s inexorable march to the right.
The announcement also sets off a free-for-all among Georgia congressmen, who are all too aware that an open Senate seat doesn’t come along very often. As they give up their seats to run, that in turn will create ripples in the Georgia General Assembly, as legislators position themselves to fill those vacancies. It promises to be quite the scene, with GOP Senate hopefuls competing with each other for the title of most-diehard-conservative-ever-ever-ever.
And as an added attraction? As the AJC’s Dan Malloy tweets from Washington, a spokesman for Newt Gingrich may be cracking the door open a bit, observing that “Newt might be on Medicare, but he is not ready for the retirement home.” As you recall, Gingrich won the Georgia presidential primary by 20 percentage points. He had ruled out running in a primary against Chambliss, but this could change things.
(Personally, I think a Gingrich run is unlikely. But in a second tweet, Malloy reports that “Expecting a statement from @NewtGingrich on #GASen today after he speaks with his wife.” UPDATE 12:34: A Gingrich spokesman now says that the former speaker “will not be a candidate in the 2014 GOP Senate primary.”)
On the Democratic side, the promise of a hard-fought, expensive, blood-letting GOP primary, with the process almost certain to produce a candidate much more conservative than the conservative Chambliss, may create a small window of opportunity.
No, the timing isn’t perfect. The demographics of the state may be changing, but they haven’t quite changed enough. The political fortunes of Democrats in general are improving, but they haven’t improved quite enough in Georgia. And the party infrastructure in much of the state is abysmal. Nonetheless, the right Democratic candidate, with the right campaign and message and against the right opponent, could potentially accelerate the process by a cycle or two.
And who might fit the bill as the “right Democratic candidate”? The list is pretty short. U.S. Rep. John Barrow, the only white southern Democrat remaining in the House, has already announced he won’t run for Senate. State Sen. Jason Carter of Decatur has a bright future, but youth and relative inexperience would make victory difficult. And while Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is probably the party’s best hope in a statewide race, it would be a big political risk even for him.

Please run Newt the left will contribute to your war crest! Newt has never won a statewide general election and has had to move around Georgia to capture the right light ,even as speaker, to win reelection to the congress.
The Democratics need to get excited about this. Obama needs to bring his machines and ground people to Georgia. The right is bound to run a weak character candidate it is all they have. This could be the crack we need for the south to finally join the union instead of fighting it.

Obama’s Georgia supporters are mostly in the metro area. The others who voted for him are low information voters who will have awakened and have a bad case of buyer’s remorse by the mid-term, much less the next presidential.
Where do you pull this stuff, JReb?
I mean, if you had actual election or polling results to back any of this up I might be inclined to listen, but it’s pure conjecture, and a whole lot of nasty, judgmental crap hurled at your fellow residents. I mean, “low information?” If you really want to get into a pissing match on whose constituents are more clueless, I suggest you look elsewhere.

And the debates! The debates could become classics:
Catholic organizations have for decades fought to change federal and state laws that fail to protect “unborn persons,” and Catholic Health’s lawyers in this case had the chance to set precedent bolstering anti-abortion legal arguments. Instead, they are arguing state law protects doctors from liability concerning unborn fetuses on grounds that those fetuses are not persons with legal rights.
Let’s start with you Mr. Broun, Are the Catholics correct in ther claim that the unborn fetus is not a person?

That seems to be the case, RB. I also have yet to see a column from Jay on wasteful and fraudulent government spending. You know, when something isn’t really working at some point you have to say “Maybe we should try a different approach”. All of the money the federal government has spent to help the disadvantaged in our inner cities doesn’t seem to have done much. Maybe money per se isn’t the solution. Maybe it’s something else. Maybe those in gubmint should listen to people like Bill Cosby and figure out how it might apply his common sense and wise counsel to once and for all help people out of the decades old rut they are in. A little off topic:
The DC court of appeals just laid a smack down on Obama about recess appointments.
“The dearth of intrasession appointments in the years and decades following the ratification of the Constitution speaks far more impressively than the history of recent presidential exercise of a supposed power to make such appointments,” the judges wrote.
“Recent presidents are doing no more than interpreting the Constitution. While we recognize that all branches of government must of necessity exercise their understanding of the Constitution in order to perform their duties faithfully thereto, ultimately it is our role to discern the authoritative meaning of the supreme law.”

Morality, with a name like “Morality,” you should already know the answer to your question.
Yes, something that is technically legal can be cheating. Is legality the only basis for determining right and wrong? (And again, the legality of this particular approach is itself uncertain.)
When slugger Mark McGuire was taking the steroid androstenedione back in the late ’90s, was he cheating? It wasn’t on baseball’s list of proscribed drugs at the time.

The Cato Institute estimated that, in 2002, $93 billion were devoted to corporate welfare. This is about 5 percent of the federal budget. To clarify what is and isn’t corporate welfare, a “no-bid” Iraq contract for the prestigious Halliburton, would not be considered corporate welfare because the government technically directly receives some good or service in exchange for this expenditure. Based on the Pentagon’s Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) findings of $1.4 billion of overcharging and fraud, I suppose the primary service they provide could be considered to be repeatedly violating the American taxpayer. On the other hand, the $15 billion in subsidies contained in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, to the oil, gas, and coal industries, would be considered corporate welfare because no goods or services are directly returned to the government in exchange for these expenditures.

Your “question[s]” were absurd and deserved no answer from me. If you don’t that the federal government is now spending money at a percentage of the GDP that is considerably above the historic norm – a good part of which is devoted to paying an almost 17T dollar debt, then I don’t know what to tell you. The only prayer Obama has of us getting out of this huge hole we are in without substantial spending cuts is if the economy recovers to a good state. If that does not happen, and cuts are not made, our situation will not be better. It will not even be the same. It will be worse – perhaps much so.

How about Hank Johnson as a Saxby replacement? He will keep Guam stable and protect the *little people* he inadvertently offended by making any reference to midgets *hate speech.* In fact his comments explaining what moves *little people* is a classic and could be woven into his campaign speeches.

“Just look what those idiots let out of the bag when they impeached Clinton for a triviality. Even Newt told them not to..”
Since when is lying under oath to prevent someone else due process a triviality?? I mean it was serious enough that it got him disbarred or have you forgotten that.

JAY – The law is the law is the law……. that is what they teach in lawyer school. If it is legal for everyone to do it – legally it is not cheating. If it had gone to court he would have been found innocent of cheating. Don’t confuse morality with law. Two completely and unrelated things. If the drug was not on the banned list it wasn’t cheating because they all could do it (as Cat said). It should have been on the list but wasn’t. Like I said abortion is legal but in my opinion, and God’s, immoral. Though Shalt Not Kill.

“Talk radio/FOXBOT puppets parroting or the same guy with an alt? Should we take a vote?”
Fred, you should conduct an Internet search on the topics Jay writes about to see how often the EXACT same story is being covered by the Huffington Post, Mother Jones and various other liberal media sites. You know – just to get some more perspective about the political “echo chamber” you seem to be condemning. It happens on both the right and the left. If it’s not finger pointing, it’s name calling. Almost all of the “talking heads” do it to some extent. The ironically funny thing is that pointing out the failings or immorality or hypocrisy of the other side seldom get those on that side to reflect and perhaps decide maybe they shouldn’t be in the business of defending politicians, but (instead) their own personal beliefs.

Steve, “The Cato Institute estimated that, in 2002, $93 billion were devoted to corporate welfare. This is about 5 percent of the federal budget.”
OK Steve. Ignoring that 2002 data is 10 years old, I’d be happy to cut every bit of this 5% of the budget, including all of it being given to the Solyndra’s of the world, IF you’ll tell me where we’re going to get the other $907B to get us out of deficit spending. In Steve’s world, what gets cut?

I don’t know, I can’t stand to listen to him. I just made an educated guess from the fact that within an hour of his show start time 2 people use the exact same phrasology on an issue not under discussion here.
Although, I think THAT would be a good little topic to take us into FNM. Jay could do a quick little piece on the obstructionism that had Oama trying that, and maybe explain how Clinton dealt with the same obstructionism.

Oy vey, our blog self-proclaimed “constitutional scholars” talking about how Obama may not know the constitution.
Were they concerned when the House Reps were forming a plan to withhold paychecks as part of their plans in direct violation of the constitution? These are the same “constitutional scholars” who also support waterboarding as “constitutional”
Or told us how Obamacare was clearly unconstitutional in all aspects.
The question is still whether for example: The mere fact that the Senate has stated it is in a ‘pro forma’ session at which no business shall be conducted does not change the fact the Senate is unable to perform it constitutional role in the confirmation process
Some of you clownish wannabes really have no concept of the legal system in your black/white absolute worlds or how things move through court systems.

You know what … if the GOP wants to completely screw the system (with the Gerrymandering of the future and the voter intimidation of the past), let’s do away with elections. Since everyone seems to have a pretty good idea (to themselves) of how to better run things, let’s have a lottery. Your name gets picked, you run the city/county/state/country. How does that sound? It would completely obliterate the special interests groups and lobbyists. The less the person wanted the job, the better they would be at it.

Fred (TM) – I wasn’t calling for the impeachment of Obama and thought that impeaching Clinton for being a liar under oath over his immorality a big waste of tax payer money and stupid. However what Obama is doing is as Jay say’s a “technical” impeachable offense. Obama should quit skirting the power of Congress and the Constitution. Lack of patience is a poor excuse to violate the law.

“I think maybe the court of appeals smackdown of Obama is sort of relevant adding to the slow but steady bits of evidence that he is no constitutional scholar. ”
Would it sound silly if I said “Every Supreme Court justice who’s on the losing side in a 5-4 decision is no constitutional scholar”?
New issues come up and are resolved. Pres Obama’s role is now that of president – not university instructor. One of those duties is to push gray areas in favor of the Executive. It’s pretty much the same as what the appeals court did with their opinion – the asserted the prerogatives of the Judiciary.

“Yes, something that is technically legal can be cheating. Is legality the only basis for determining right and wrong? (And again, the legality of this particular approach is itself uncertain.)”
I agree, but apart from some widely accepted moral code, what other basis might that be? Only that is another topic altogether.

The problem with your whole thesis is that the Senate agreed to and voted to withhold their own pay if they did not come up with a budget. This makes it Constitutional. As far as Obamacare, the SCOTUS said the way the bill was sold to the American people “penalty” was unconstitutional. Obama’s lawyers came up with the tax argument at the last minute to do an end run and Roberts bought the argument. The court did strike down as Unconstitutional the parts about holding the states hostage unless they increased Medicaid and set up the exchanges.

Linda McMahon of Connecticut
Todd Akin of Missouri
Richard Mourdock of Indiana
