With Hillary testifying, GOP gets its Benghazi moment

According to U.S. Sen. John McCain, the Obama administration has conducted a coverup of “massive proportions” regarding the assassination of Ambassador Christopher Stevens in Benghazi last year. Other Republicans have implied that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was so terrified of having to testify before Congress that she faked a major illness (”Benghazi fever”) to avoid the appearance.

Well, today will be the day to put up or shut up. Clinton will testify, alone, before committees in both the House and Senate. If McCain has evidence for his claims, let’s see it. If there’s something so earth-shaking about the Benghazi tragedy that Clinton was quaking in her boots at the prospect of being asked about it, this would be the time to bring that information forward.

GOP presidential hopefuls Rand Paul and Marco Rubio also sit on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, giving them the opportunity to do battle with a potential opponent in 2016, should they choose to do so. Clinton enters the hearing with 65 percent of America viewing her favorably, and only 29 percent unfavorably. After all the braying on the right about Benghazi, this is their chance to make the charges stick, in public.

Again, should they try to do so.

An investigatory blue-ribbon board appointed by the State Department has already outlined operational failures and deficiencies that contributed to the deaths of Stevens and three brave members of his team. It also calmly and factually repudiated fanciful claims by the conservative media that the Obama administration could have intervened militarily but chose not to do so.

That report implicated Congress as well, noting that “the solution requires a more serious and sustained commitment from Congress to support State Department needs, which, in total, constitute a small percentage both of the full national budget and that spent for national security.” The metric often bandied about in Washington is that the Pentagon has more authorized personnel in military bands than the State Department has professional diplomats.

Again, there is no question that the Benghazi tragedy revealed important lapses of judgment among State Department personnel, including Stevens himself, as well as institutional problems within the department. Clinton, who will soon be leaving office, has acknowledged those problems and pledged to correct them, a task that her probable successor, John Kerry, will have to continue. As part of its oversight function, Congress has every right to press Clinton on the progress she has made.

But since news of the Benghazi attack first broke, Republicans in Congress and the conservative media, led by Fox News, have tried to portray it as something much more sinister. McCain, for example, suggested that Benghazi was worse than Watergate, the scandal that ended Richard Nixon’s presidency. Such claims have always seemed grossly exaggerated based on the available facts, but again, if he and others have the evidence to back such hyperbole, this is their chance to present it to the American people.

I’m betting they don’t.

VA Senate Pushes Gerrymandering Bill Through During Inauguration

While public attention was focused on the inauguration of President Obama, the Virginia state Senate quickly passed a redistricting measure that could give Republicans a majority in the state senate in 2015. The measure was passed on a 20 to 19 party-line vote while one Democratic state senator was in Washington, D.C., for the Inauguration ceremonies.

“We talk about the dangers of legislating on the fly. Well, this is the ultimate in danger,” Senator Don McEachin of Henrico (D) said about the measure. “The public has no idea what we’re about to do adopting this substitute, nor would they know in the next three days that it would take for this bill to ultimately pass.”

Governor Bob McDonnell (R) had yet to read the legislation when it was passed. A spokesperson for the governor’s office told reporters “The Governor was very surprised to learn that a redistricting bill would be voted on by the Senate today… He has not seen this legislation. If the bill gets to his desk he will review it in great detail at that time as he did with prior redistricting legislation.”

The redistricting would potentially eliminate one democratic seat in the Virginia senate by creating one district that is predominantly minorities, and in doing so allowing Republicans to gain control of nearby districts.
Democratic Leader Richard Saslow (D-Fairfax) says that Democrats will challenge the measure in court if it passes the House. “If this plan stands, there will be litigation, you can be sure of that,” he told reporters. “The Virginia Constitution says that the Virginia General Assembly shall redistrict in 2011 and every 10 years thereafter. This will be struck down. The collateral damage from this thing will be immeasurable. This isn’t the last we’ve heard of this.”

This just shows how low and underhanded the RepugNOwecan’ts are.

This will be where two parallel universes collide for those on the right. Their extreme paranoia over President Obama, and their unyielding devotion to the “debt crisis” that will surely lead us to a Kenyan-Socialist-Colonial-Communist-Nazi-Fascist style of “Obamanomics”….

How? Quite simple. The report, the testimony and the facts show that our embassy in Benghazi, as well as around the world, was under-staffed, under-protected. The President requested more funds to defend our diplomats, and the REPUBLICANS in the House slashed that budget so there were not enough resources to protect…

And it is President OBAMA who is “hiding something so sinister”???????…

rFor the US to bomb and basically destroy a country and assassinate its head of state on worldwide television, and then for diplomats to go in, those diplomats have to realize that they’re not innocent. They are parties in a major war crime. So they have to on guard for that. To think there’s going to be normal diplomatic relations in a country like Libya – that’s totally unstable as a result of NATO intervention – is a bit naïve by western pundits and politicians in Washington and London. No one is innocent anymore. This is the new paradigm of Western aggression that they have to accept as a reality.

First off, ‘the guy who made the video” actually has a NAME. Did you know that/ You should, it’s easily found and a quick google of that name pulls up his rap sheet with his many felonies listed: Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

FIRST he was arrested in 1997 for attempting to make meth. But that’s cool with you folks because you LOVES you some Meth Ho Ayn Rand. Unfortunately Los Angeles County doesn’t so he was sentence to 1 year in the pokey and 3 years probation.

THEN in 2002 he violated that probation and got to do anohter year in the pokey.

NOT DONE YET, he then committed bank fraud and identity theft and was convicted in 2010, receiving 21 months in jail and 5 more years of probation, and we all know by now how good he is at breaking probation………

So he was then very publically caught for violating the terms of his probation, which were NOT FAKING IDENTITIES, USING ALIASES AND USING THE INTERNET.

Sorry pal, but your blind hatred and rage seems to have blinded you from the fact that this guy is a certified scumbag. but then so was Ayn Rand. Hell if Rush didn’t have so much money and political pull HE would have done jail time for his drug use and drug dealing.

You Fanatical FOXBOTS loves you some druggies don’t you?

Virginia Senate Passes Redistricting Plan To Oust Democratic Senator During Inaugural

As mentioned earlier, seizing on the absence of a Democratic senator who happens to be a veteran of the civil rights movement and was in Washington, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, for the second inauguration of the country’s first black president, Republicans in the evenly split Virginia state Senatepushed through a surprise mid-decade redistricting plan to try to gain decisive control of the body in the next election.

This is the kind of dirty tricks the RepugNOwecan’ts ought to be ashamed of.

Begs the question to the Senator, what is more important your seat in the state Senate or going to party with Obama?

Instead, the attack in Benghazi should be seen for what it was, an entirely political event, with political implications.

And now that we see events spilling into Mali, with David Cameron saying that this is an issue that will “require a response that is about years, even decades, rather than months”. Watch for Obama to echo these sentiments.

Of course it’s controversial…there are motives on both sides to exploit this..BO et al did not favors in the handling of this mess…all he really had to do was make sure what was put in press was simply “we don’t know yet”..

Stevens was in a country that had/has no established government and was being secured by competing tribal militia’s whose allegiance’s have still not been secured by the U.S. Ambassador Stevens made a grave tactical error that cost his life and the lives of others and to dismiss this as the first cause is the disservice.

willie lynch 9:50.

The only post I’ve seen this entire morning that begins to address the true larger issues involved.

That said, I still disagree that this is to be viewed primarily in the context of a personal error on Stevens’ part. Stevens was not there on a personal mission. He was there on official business. Amazing that our resident analyst, Jay Bookman, hasn’t offered any analysis of what the strategic goals of our involvement there might be.

I’m just a fly on the wall here, but it seems to me that even arming the men assigned to protect the Ambassador with the infamous Military version of the Bushmaster would have been like giving Custer more ammo. They still would have been under manned and out gunned.

But as an aside, I just purchased 10 boxes of Winchester Super-X Centerfire Rifle Ammunition X220S, 220 Swift, Pointed Soft Point, 50 GR, 3870 fps,in 20 round boxes at 40.00 dollars per box. Hillary did nothing wrong and she should not be held accountable. After all, she was once the First Lady, who also “stood by her man” during the sexcapades of her adulterous husband as Arkansas governor, who lied about the missing Rose Firm law papers that were found in her WH bedroom, who ordered FBI dossiers on political rivals while in the WH, who summarily fired the WH travel department employees to install cronies, who was annointed senator representing NY even though she never lived there, and stays married to the serial philanderer as a marriage of convenience. Why would anyone not have faith and trust in this woman?

Oh, maybe because she represents the low character of a Democrat without values and honesty?

Let’s be truthful libs. She is looked upon as your next radical piece of trash that could represent your choice for the White House. She could represent the strong-willed woman that the MSM can mold and advertise as the next historic president.

The fact remains that she is a career politician who comes from the liberal ranks of academia and a chronic liar that always measures her answers in hesitant diction; sly as a fox, but uncatchable as a greased pig. She is the face of the Democrat Party and the master of deceipt.

Her grand moment of political theatre is about to take place. Her years of cunning liberalism will now be put to the test in a show trial of her acting ability. She will portray the leader of a department that oversees worldwide problems and inherent dangers, but not the one responsible for bone-headed decisions or failures that got people killed. Just as she has covered her rear end all her political life, she will exercise her confidence in doing the same under oath today.

Outside of the security blanket of her position, the MSM, and the auspices of the Democrat Party the laws of this country would have her arraigned on charges of accessory to murder.

This was a cover-up for the benefit of re-electing Obama and all you liberals know it. By supporting or denying such makes you all guilty by association. That being said, it makes you all accessories to murder, as well. Shame on you!

I do agree that Ambassador Stevens (may he rest in peace) did make the choice to be where he was, when he was and does bear some responsibility.

Yes. However, I think that rhetorically, “No one seems to want to place the blame where it should be and that’s with Ambassador Stevens”–it goes too far. “Blame” is a very loaded term. The people to blame for this are the murderous terrorists who slaughtered a good man and his colleagues.

And if I’m sounding like a hair-splitter by complaining about terminology, I might remind one and all that it was the “did he or did he not say ‘terror’” issue that basically decided who won the second Presidential debate. Words matter.

Regarding the truth, can you imagine how much we really don’t know about what is happening behind the scenes politically? My bet is that the less we know, the better for the status quo. Perhaps we only get half of every story for reasons not clear on the surface.

IMO, truth is premised on the idea of actually having all the “facts” including those we are not privy to, to ascertain the truth. The fact that we will never get all, is why so much grey area exists that ultimately turns from debate to insults..

One example that comes to mind is why did Romney pipe down on the issue after being briefed on such matters? We can politically speculate but we one thing is for certain, we likely don’t know half the story.

From what I understand Ambassador Stevens went to this particular area because of his familiarity with the people and his perceived security amongst them. Now it should be said that he was secure in his movements among these people under Col. Quaddafi. Stevens may have believed his prior ease of movement was due to his own affability and congeniality and was not due to the environment created by the deposed leader but again this would place the responsibility for his demise on his shoulders.

It had been reported that Ambassador Stevens went to this area, an area “secured” by a local militia, without the prior approval of the State Department as it has been said he was known to do.

It was a mistake in judgment on the Ambassadors part but no one want’s to blame a man who was serving his country for his own demise even if the cause was simply his own bad call. It was just a mistake.

Political views are indeed more important than human life to the simple minded

Amazing that the same conned who have lost all reality over the death of a ambassador at the same time profess over and over again that the answer to gun violence is more guns

And yet, we have reports the Ambassador was denied requested protection. Once again, this is a case of the good guys not having the guns and the bad guys having them.

If you think guns aren’t a deterence to violence, I point you to the parade route bammy took on Monday. Over 20,000 ARMED police and who knows how many Secret Service guys and who knows what else was around.

An armed society is a polite society.

It’s the culture we have to change. Address Hollywood, video games and gangs and you address a substantial part of what’s wrong in our society.

You love to post that but you never support your assertion.

Here’s what Jay wrote:

“1.) The premise of the entire debate is false, because the attack on our consulate in Benghazi was not an act of terror. An act of terror, by definition, targets the civilian population and attempts to inflict terror on that population. This was a military operation/assassination, targeted not at civilians but at the top American presence in Libya and, indirectly, at the armed guards who protected that presence. It was an attack on the United States and its interests.

Calling it an act of terror confuses the issue. However, we prefer that confusion. That confusion allows us to place this attack safely within our preferred War on Terror narrative and casts America as the innocent victim of nefarious, brutal men rather than as a major player contending for some share of power and influence in Libya, which is what we are.

September 11 was an act of terror. The truck bombing that killed 241 Marines in their barracks in Lebanon in 1983 was not an act of terror. Attacks on our forces in Afghanistan are not acts of terror. And neither was this.

2.) The Obama administration, for reasons that remain unclear, balked at calling it either an act of terror or a direct military operation. They initially preferred a third category, describing it as a mass protest that got out of hand. And while that characterization may have reflected initial and incorrect intelligence about the attack, they clung to that characterization long after it had become clear that it was false. ”

Now, maybe you can help us if your memory is clear enough to remember all those professional military education books you were reading as a low-ranking enlisted guy in a foxhole. Or maybe it’s from the briefings you attended later in life.

Care to define for us an act of terror vs a military action that contradicts what Jay wrote and draws a clear distinction between each?

Just had an email from a friend who’s no fan of Pres Obama, let alone Obamacare.

He changed insurance companies. Doc told him he needed big biopsies of his prostate. Insurance company told him they wouldn’t pay because he had a pre-existing condition (enlarged prostate). Would cost him thousands out of pocket.

Seems he just got a new insurance policy that covers pre-existing conditions thanks to Obamacare.

I asked him if he had better feelings towards the president and Obamacare.

Barrasso’s question about whether Hillary agreed with Obama that AQ has been decimated and her reply was interesting as it points out the flaw in Obama’s dependence on Drones. She did a good job of dancing by saying that she believed the AQ core has been decimated but that affiliated groups now represent the new threat. I think this underscores the danger that this administrations creates by its attempt to sanitize the war against terror by depending on drones, while losing touch with the importance of intelligence gathering. Our intelligence community should have known a lot more about what was going on in North Africa and other parts of the world with the growth of additional jihadists groups and the destabelization of Middle Eastern and African governments. Obama’s “peace in our time” comment during his inaugural address appears to be as inappropriate as his comments about AQ being decimated.

I’m going to re-state my position on the “YouTube blamin’ liars” business.

Had it been as the early reports had apparently indicated, part of a massive, world-wide violent uprising in response to an offensive video, that to me would indicate that something far nastier was afoot, and that the Administration had failed to establish a better level of trust between the secular West and devout Islamist republics with whom we were seeking rapprochement. It would be a forgivable lapse–this is a mighty chasm to bridge, after all–but still a major one.

That it was instead a specific, planned/plotted terrorist attack against a specific diplomat is horrific, but part and parcel of the dangerous work some in the State dept. do.

The manner in which the opposition party in America has flipped and flopped and tried to make something out of nothing–the “nothing” being imagined chicanery and conspiracy to advance a phony explanation for the violence–is nothing short of baffling. It is hard to imagine, at this point, just what crazy theory the GOP faithful won’t accept.

Well, that’s one version, I suppose. I don’t know if it was worse than Watergate – no one died because of the Watergate scandal – but that is irrelevent. The travesty with Benghazi was that it was a foreign policy screw up of enormous consequence based upon the administration’s misguided policy that if you treat cobras and rattlesnakes and water moccasins “nice” they will be nice back to you. A fundamental misunderstanding of the Islamasist / terrorist mind set. The highly inconvenient “timing” of the incident one month before the presidential election was a critical part of the all hands on deck to obfuscate, dissemble, “investigate” and shut this thing down until after November 6.

Even more disquieting, it was just one more reminder that journalism in the lamestream media is dead. The lamestream rallied around Obama and helped to keep the lid on with barely any coverage. Yes, Fox covered it with an investigative and critical eye, the only major news outlet that did, and it wondered again and again how the administration could go for so long without telling the American people what really happened. If not for the hated Fox News, there would be no critical and skeptical and investigative journalism at all related to the Obama administration. Never before in our history has the national/press/news/media been so far into the tank to help a President implement his policies with as little criticism as possible. And yes, the did level one major criticism when this happened, which made them look silly and showed how wrong they were – about Romney, of course – “he spoke out too soon.” But based on the way this has gone, not soon enough. And now, over 4 months after this happened, the person who was in charge finally deigns the Congress with her presence to answer some hard questions.

DownInAlbany alluded to a good point. These agencies use huge sums for various things, some of which appear to be… excessive. From DoD pending a quarter mill (is that the right amount?) for a float in a parade to an agency refurbishing executive bathrooms for a gazillion dollars. It’s the nature of large organizations.

Which is why it drives me nuts to hear cons say ‘any cut to the Defense budget weakens our security!”

Fair enough, but “decimate” is a Latin term (I took Latin in college – along with a course in Etymology) and I would bet that neither Recon or Scout – despite their experience – would ever have been taught the etymological meaning of that word.

BTW, about half the words in the English language are Latinate. That gives us (as opposed to, say, the Chinese) a leg up in learning a so-called “romance” language like Spanish. I went to Mexico City when I was an undergraduate studying Latin and, though I could not speak Spanish, I found I was able to make sense of the Mexican newspapers.

How dare that woman go to law school? How dare the Governor’s wife work outside the mansion? How dare she have opinions? How dare she make MONEY in the commodities market? How dare she NOT leave her husband after what he did? Oh, who could blame her husband for what he did? That’s not a real marriage. Look at her thighs. What kind of woman wears pantsuits? Listen to her shrill voice. That’s not a real laugh. Who does she think she is, using her brains and experience and contacts to get THAT job? Surely she does not think working her tail off for OUR country, all over the world, non-stop, and being damned good at it, would get her a reprieve from the pettiness of the He-Man-Woman-Haters Club, does it? Just because our intelligence officers deemed the details of the Benghazi incident CLASSIFIED, and therefore not for the average private citizen’s consumption with his 600-calorie morning muffin, does not mean the HMWHC of America will pass up an opportunity to trash her publicly once again!

And again, as always, no matter what kind of mud they sling at her, or how many times they spit on her, she holds herself with dignity, grace, and composure, and rises above them. Yay, Hil! A shining example for daughters everywhere.

It is not so much parody as satire (a parody targets a specific original work rather than a kind of person). RC’s “contributions” are better, in my opinion (I actually enjoy them much of the time, even as a conservative). The piece to which you linked is too overt and unsophisticated (like the excessive use of misspellings).

You want an example of brilliant satire? Look no further than at Gulliver’s Travels. Gulliver is the narrator of the story, but he himself is an idiot. In studying that work, I once made a discovery no one else had: the illustration of the Word Machine of Lagado does not match Gulliver’s description! So not only is the device itself ludicrous and a satirical emblem of the “learning” of Swift’s time, but the narrative literature of the time (travel journals and so on) was also being satirized by a narrator who fawns over an idiotic device he can’t even accurately depict! THAT is funny.

Not as much as you think. Investigate it and see. It all began really changing during the Renaissance. Compare Shakespeare’s language to that of Chaucer. The influx of Latinate words through French (once the “lingua franca” of the world) and academic and scientific coinages using Latin (and Greek) cognates are a big reason for the “non-Germanic” quality of our language. The right stays confused in this thing. They put Stevens in the same frame as the 9/11 victims that were victims caught in a situation not at all their making. To say any of the over 3,000 knew they would die this way that day would not be true. Stevens is a soldier who signs up for duty absolutely knowing the temperature of his job. He, I would think, could see this in the cards somewhere before he signed up and definitely was not a draftee or soldier forced to stand his post.

As for communications, I remember the aggressive FOX Network on at least one occasion getting their story wrong (, actually two, the presidential election was a nuke for them too). That would be the Supreme Court decision on healthcare and they didn’t miss it by announcing what they hadn’t been hoping for but miss it by saying it had been turned down. Now this is in Washington under slightly better reporting conditions yet they missed it and missed it to the right. So Hilary missed it left from half way around the world, with third world communications and a fire storm in progress, and FOX comically wants her on the carpet. And if there is any quaking I can promise you it will be those right wing congressmen who only got elected because they were saboteurs not intellectuals that can match wits with Hilary.
