‘President Rand Paul’ would have fired Hillary post-Benghazi
In his discussion with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this morning, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky imagined himself as president of the United States. Had he been in that lofty position, he told Clinton, he would have removed her from office:
“I’m glad that you’re accepting responsibility. I think that ultimately, with you leaving, that you accept the culpability for the worst tragedy since 9/11. And I really mean that. Had I been president at the time and I had found that you had not read the cables from Benghazi, you had not read the cables from Ambassador Stevens, I would have relieved you of your post. I think it’s inexcusable….”
“I think it’s inexcusable that you did not know about this, and that you did not read these cables. I would think by anybody’s estimation Libya has to have been one of the hottest of hot spots around the world. Not to know of the requests for security really, I think, really, cost these people their lives. Their lives could have been saved had someone been more available, had someone been aware of these things, more on top of their jobs.”
Rant concluded, Paul then posed a question (2:21 in the video above):
“Is the US involved with any procuring of weapons, transfer of weapons, buying, selling, anyhow transferring weapons to Turkey, out of Libya?
“To Turkey?” Clinton responded, her body language suggesting that she found the question bizarre. “I will have to take that question for the record. That’s … Nobody has ever raised that with me.”
“It’s been in news reports that ships have been leaving from Libya, and that they may have weapons,” Paul responded. “And what I would like to know Is the annex that was close by, were they involved with procuring, buying, selling, obtaining weapons and were any of these weapons being transferred to other countries, Turkey included.”
“You’ll have to direct that question to the agency that ran the annex,” Clinton said pointedly.
The agency that ran the annex is the CIA.
The “news reports” that Rand referred to are anonymously sourced stories on Fox News and on right-wing websites alleging that the CIA was buying up weapons in Libya and shipping them to Turkey and then on to Syrian rebels, including to known jihadist groups. Glenn Beck has been pushing the conspiracy theory as well.
It is not inconceivable that the U.S. has assisted the flow of arms out of Libya and into Syria, although given how spectacularly wrong Fox has been proved to be on other anonymously sourced reports involving Benghazi, I wouldn’t give its reports a lot of credence. Given national security implications, I’m also not sure that Paul acted responsibly by raising the issue in a public hearing.
If he was actually seeking information, rather than playing to the conspiracy crowd, he has more private means of getting answers as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He runs the risk of endangering U.S. lives by doing it in public, without apparently knowing the possible ramifications.
I wonder what President Rand Paul would say about somebody who did that?

I guess by your response you would agree with me that we have set the proverbial “bar” pretty low for political candidates. Franken looks positively great compared with Ventura or Berry. But that, needless to say, is not saying a whole lot.

Who is to day that John Kerry is going to be any better? It takes a certain person to be SOS, forthright, honest, tough and smart along with being somewhat independent of the President and the rest of his cabinet. No doubt, the President sets a foreign policy agenda but the SOS has to be cunning and shrewd in her dealings with other government heads of state. He strikes me as being not all that intelligent (stupidly running his mouth and saying things he shouldn’t over and over again); I think he is very hypocritical and quite possibly corrupt (considering the various allegations that have been made about him doing unethical or perhaps illegal things for money); he is not what I would call a very good leader (more of an autocrat); and he has waffled on a number of political issues (suggesting, as with Romney, that he lacks deep convictions).

I only have a minute for a driveby but was thinking about a documentary that the libs would like. I was channel surfing over the weekend and saw terminator part 3 rise of the machines. Was Cain just some naïf in the ways of high-level Fed policy? Sure. That was the point. His fellow board members would include the head of a petroleum company, a Kansas City housing advocate, and an Oklahoma cattle magnate. Bill McQuillan, the chairman of CNB National Bank in Greeley, Neb., overlapped with Cain for three years and shared “puddle jumper” planes with him when they needed to go to the monthly meetings.

First, I recall that the prior incidents you suggest were subject to the same level of scrutiny. Also, I don’t really recall that any of the sitting presidents at those times being suspect of at a minimum, botching post events and disclosure.
Anyhow, point is what do those other situations have to do with this one? I don’t think, despite what is said, that this was 100% avoidable. The problem is the election year timing and suspect outing of details…
Why is it a witch hunt? We have a right to know why the post event communication was suspect to say the least..

With regard to him being corrupt, did you know that he’s portrayed in the movie Casino?
The Dick Smothers character, who is depicted as eagerly accepting comps and freebies from Ace Rothstein (Robert DeNiro) is apparently heavily based on Harry Reid. As you know, my wife’s from the West Coast, and she happened to work as a casino change girl a couple of summers while she was in college. When she told me that the Dick Smothers character was supposed to be Harry Reid, I didn’t believe her — but I looked it up and sure enough . . .

I have no idea how *much* of the film’s portrayal is truthful with respect to Reid, but apparently, he’s got something of a rep for getting mixed up in ’stuff.’

The production of cars in China is a sign of Chrysler’s growing strength in overseas markets. It would like to build Jeeps in China to sell in China. It is not outsourcing American auto jobs.

They certainly didn’t under Reagan. He had 92 people killed under his watch at embassies.
Bush killed a lot of Americans in Iraq chasing boogeymen.
Obama’s record is pretty good in comparison.
