In Louisiana, Jindal slashes aid to the dying
UPDATE: This evening, the Jindal administration announced that it was suspending — through June 30 — its announced plan to cease funding of Medicaid hospice services. As the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports:
“…. on Wednesday, the administration reversed course. The program will be maintained for the rest of the state’s fiscal year, which ends June 30, with the use of “temporary bridge funding,” according to a news release from the Department of Health and Hospitals. The release referred to that money as grant funding but did not specify where it came from or how reallocating it to hospice care would affect other state programs.”
The longer-term fate of the Medicaid hospice program is uncertain.

How do conservatives propose to cut Medicare and Medicaid spending?
Gov. Bobby Jindal, oft-mentioned as a 2016 presidential contender, is going about it in a number of ways, including an executive order that will end Medicaid coverage of hospice services as of February 1. Each year, some 1,700 less affluent residents of Louisiana have benefited from those services.
“In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, the Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (LMHPCO) Board of Directors stated that it was “shocked and saddened” by Gov. Jindal’s recent decision to eliminate the Medicaid hospice benefit, effective February 1, 2013.
“While the board strongly disagrees with this decision, the board is even more confused by the administration’s assertion that this action will save the state $10.6 million in FY 2014,” the board stated.
“For 10 years, the Medicaid Hospice Benefit has provided terminally ill patients and their families in Louisiana with the confidence they need to forgo expensive end-of-life hospital admissions. According to the administration, Louisiana Medicaid spent $11,430,414.14 on hospice services for some 5,189 recipients in 2012 — an average of $2,202.81 per patient.
With or without hospice, these terminally ill patients will die. The average length of stay for hospice patients in Louisiana is 72 days, with 50 percent of our patients dying within 26 days of enrollment. Without hospice, as these terminal patients decline, they will typically be transported to the nearest hospital emergency room by ambulance, and will subsequently be moved into the hospital’s intensive care units — costing the state’s Medicaid system at least four times the cost of hospice care.”
Hospice, almost by definition, is not a life-saving intervention. It is a death-management intervention. As the Louisiana hospice officials note, this alleged “savings” will almost certainly result in higher costs to taxpayers, as people who are denied professional hospice care seek medical assistance in more expensive ways.
But beyond that bottom-line analysis, there’s a question of morality and decency. Like millions of Americans, I have witnessed first-hand the value of hospice both for the terminally ill patient and for his or her loved ones. The fact that Jindal is enacting this reduction as a way to help finance the elimination of state corporate and income taxes only compounds the tragic nature of the misjudgment.

In Florida, sex ed (or more accurately, abstinence-only programs) aren’t legally required to provide students with medically factual information, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
Instead, these educational courses generally focus on teaching children that sex within marriage is the only allowable framework for intimacy, and contraception is only permissable between a husband and wife

A tax on the first $30k in income seems fair to fix that
That would only require another 10% tax on that income
Then, excluding income taxes, you’re looking at around a 27-30% tax rate

You seem to not understand how Medicare works.
For *most* Americans, if you’re on Social Security, Medicare is *automatically* your primary health insurer, whether you want it to be or not. That includes millionaires and folks living in the poorhouse.
So I’ll ask again, Why not triple it on everyone? Why make the burden fall disproportionately on those with lower incomes when people with higher incomes use it too?

It’s remarkable to me how people will rage about Medicare despite not knowing how it works.
I’ll tell you this, too, Jm. If you’re of retirement age and you don’t get on SS (and, by extension, Medicare), your health insurer will want to know WHY.
The reason? Quite simply, you’re making them pay for more services than they expect to. Your insurer EXPECTS you to get onto Medicare sooner or later so that it can start picking up some of your costs.
And don’t try to pull a fast one by simply not giving your healthcare provider your Medicare info. Your commercial insurer will figure out what you’re doing, will push charges back to Medicare that it should have paid in the first place (a process called subrogation) and will send you a nastygram. Do it one time too many, and you’ll get dropped by your commercial insurer. But hey, you can rely on Medicare while you go look for another commercial health insurer. Thanks to Obamacare, you can’t be turned down for any pre-existing conditions.

But lib ilks think money grows on trees, that no decisions ever have to be made about the best allocation of funds. Their answer to all societal problems is tax the hell out of the rich!

A guy is likely to die faster and suffer less if he’s throwed in the corner at home rather than being cared for at a hospice.
On the other hand if it’s one of my loved ones being kicked out of a hospice this Jindal is liable to find out just how much damage a M-60 machine gun can do.
I’d just like to grab this Jindal by the throat and say “What the f___ is wrong with you? Here us Republicans are, trying to make nice to the Mexicans and Those People so we can get their vote, and you’re acting like the biggest a-hole on the planet.”

Nursing homes provide the kind of care a hospice provides, he said. Those outside nursing homes will still be able to get the medicine they need through the Medicaid Pharmacy Program, and Medicaid will still pay for some home-health services.
Pastorick said there are other ways to get the kinds of services hospice provides.
“The emotional support services previously offered as hospice care in community settings through Medicaid are available through nonprofit and faith-based groups that provide these services at no cost throughout the state,” he wrote.

Let’s call this what it is… a gross leadership misjudgment on Jindal’s part. The guy isn’t Satan incarnate… the libs on here seem to think that Jindal absolutely loved doing this and definitely wanted to kill people through legislation.

You can say thanks to Obamacare and the President’s view of illegal immigrants. This governor like others is on the hook to provide free education, medical care, and food for illegals from cradle to grave. It has put a tremendous burden on states and the taxpayers. Sorry for your loss…

Republican politicians have shown, since Obama’s first election, that they have little or no use for either morality or decency.
Their only concerns are winning back the White House and control of Congress. They are counting on keeping their electorate’s hatred of Obama at a high level. This allows them to continue to show their contempt of America’s poor and persuade their voters it’s actually about reducing the debt.
