I do love the CDC mandate- kind of like the Cruise movie the Minority Report.

How about you have to have a license and you cannot sell the gun without a license- we do the same with cars. Or, let’s light our hair on fair and run around in circles waiting for edicts- sorry- executive orders.

The real issue is guns couple with 22 ounce sodas- no it is WTC mosques- no it is voter registration- no it is global warming- no it is illegal immigration caused by American drug users- no it is Wall Street shoving down mortgages on poor people- no it is lack of affordable healthcare- solve these last 47 things and then we will be fine!

I encourage all American’s to visit the King Memorial located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. The King Memorial is a replica of “Stone Mountain” in Georgia. I think the designers of the King Memorial did an outstanding job depicting Dr. King emerging from Stone Mountain destroying the old images which are carvings of the losing confederate generals boldly preserved in stone. The “South” will not rise again.

Gun ownership is a community problem and should be discussed and solved by neighbors. It is no longer acceptable to say “my gun is none of your business”. As my neighbor I have a right to know if you are a registered gun owner especially if we live in a community with a high population density (townhouses, Condo, single family homes, apartments, etc.).

Today, communities have home owners associations (HOA) and everyone must follow the rules for pets, trash pick-up, keeping your grass cut, rules for using the community facilities, how many parking spaces allowed, etc. Communities across the USA are faced with choices to solve the gun ownership problem.

Yes, we all agree that a background check and a mental health screening are a good step in the right direction but the American People will have to make a choice.

1. Do we act like adults and take responsibility for our actions and live with our neighbors in peace and harmony by opening a meaningful dialogue on guns in our community and their impact on our quality of life?

2. Today, we publish names and addresses of child molestors, rapist and other people who use “fear” as their weapon of choice. Is it time for all registered gun owners to be listed in a national register just like we do to protect our children from predators?

If gun owners have nothing to “fear” they should embrace the opportunity to explain to their neighbors why they feel compelled to own guns in our neighborhood. We have a choice.

It is time for adults to act like adults for the sake of their family, friends and neighbors…Your gun is my business…Act responsible

However, I will meet you somewhere in the middle, and gladly acknowledge that we would likely need more than just some sensible gun regulation reform to bring our murder rates into parity with nations similar to ours. Income inequality, a piss-poor social safety net, etc., almost certainly play major roles in violent crime rates as well.

And yes, I am aware that overall, they’re on the decline, but it doesn’t make a rate 4x that of Canada’s any more acceptable.

I’ve always hated Mitch McConnell…until now. I still don;t like him or agree with most of what he says but it’s nice to see him stand up for the Constitution (even if it is just to keep his job, since that is what he was “hired” to do by his constituents).

You guys never let go of the “we have so many more murders here in the US than in Canada and UK” propaganda. Though it may be true, there is no way anyone here saying it can positively identify gun ownership as the reason, and certainly not LEGAL gun ownership.

Did you know that violent crime rises with ice cream sales? This is a well-documented fact. So a moron would say we need to eliminate ice cream to drop violent crime. A smart person understands though that correlation does not necessarily indicate causality, and the actual REASON that violent crime increases with ice cream sales is because of temperature;

Yes, the US has more murders than Canada and UK. Yes, the US has more guns.

SO WHAT? This could be attributed to MANY factors besides gun ownership. Racial diversity, economic inequality, education opportunities, social programs, history….but the militant left anti-gun propagandists latch on like a pit bull to what they believe is the only possible cause – LEGAL GUN OWNERSHIP.

The militant left refuses to acknowledge even the possibility that other factors could come into play. Here’s another great example…did everyone notice the looting, riots, burning, etc. that occurred right after Hurricane Katrina here in the US? Compare that to the complete LACK of looting, rioting, burning, etc. in Japan after being hit with a Tsunami, earthquakes, and nuclear meltdown. Is it just possible that we have factors besides legal gun ownership at play that cause such a different reaction here in the US?

It’s really not that hard to understand why so many gun owners are so certain that the militant left and the current administration DOES intend to disarm LEGAL gun owners.

Comrade Feinstein said on CBS-TV’s 60 Minutes, February 5, 1995, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them . . . Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in, I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren’t here.”

Justice Scalia, the most conserevative justice to ever sit on the Supreme Court, says that you do have a constitutional right to own a handgun to protect your home and family and you do have a constitutional right to own a rifle or shotgun to hunt. However, he says, you do NOT have a constitutional right to own an assault weapon. For all you gun nuts out there and conspiracy theorists, the government is not trying to take away your guns. 82% of all people, and 74% of NRA members support background checks for anyone buying a gun. Nobody needs an assault weapon for protection or to hunt. A majority of people in this country are sick and tired of innocent children being massacred. Sensible gun legislation in not unconstitutional, and that’s according to the most conservative justice on the Supreme Court.

These 23 executive orders, some of which have merit, will not stop the next Sandy Hook. If the liberals, including Feinstein, could strip every American of gun ownership, they would do it in a New York minute. Prescription drugs and cars kill more folks than guns

That is SO true!

Why just the other day, this student at _____________ School, brought in a loaded prescription bottle to school, (it had about 150 pills in the bottle). He opened the bottle and preceded to THROW it at students! There was mass hysteria before he was stopped. 25 people, including 15 KIDS, were hit by those pills and have been traumatized beyond repair!
Now, they won’t even take any pills and the Drug Lobby is ANGRY!

As for the cars, well, you KNOW how badly they affect people! Yesterday at ______________ School, a teenager, angry at his mom for making him use zit cream, rammed his 1994 Ford Bronco repeatedly into the building trying to get to other students! He didn’t actually hurt anyone other than himself, HOWEVER; he has traumatized beyond repair HUNDREDS of kids! Now, they won’t even take up Driver’s Ed anymore and the Car Lobby is ANGRY!

We need to ban PILLS and CARS!!! Who’s with me?!?

World jobless numbers rise, says UN labour agency

The number of jobless people around the world rose by 4 million in 2012 to 197 million and is expected to grow further, the UN labour agency warns.

In a report, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said the worst affected were youth: nearly 13% of the under 24s were unemployed.

It said global unemployment was projected to rise 5.1 million this year and by a further 3 million in 2014.

The trend reflected a downturn in economic growth, the document said.

This was particularly the case in developed countries.

‘Massive waste’

The report – Global Employment Trends 2013 – said that 6% of the world’s workforce were without a job in 2012.

It revealed that long-term unemployment was also growing, pointing out that a third of Europe’s jobless had been without work for more than a year.

Many were giving up, with the report estimating that 39 million people had withdrawn from the labour market.

“An uncertain economic outlook, and the inadequacy of policy to counter this, has weakened aggregate demand, holding back investment and hiring,” ILO director general Guy Ryder said.

The report also called for more funds to be injected in vocational training to equip young people to do the jobs available.

“This is a massive waste of the lives of young people and their talents, and extraordinarily damaging to the people themselves and their societies,” Mr Ryder said.

Seriously folks,

I’m open minded about solutions but I realize that there is danger in the world and that there are inherent dangers and risks in everyday life. We can’t insulate ourselves from all manner of risks. Nor should be because the cost would be prohibitive. We could station 1 or 2 cops in every elementary, middle school, and high school in the country. But at what cost? We lose more small children to swimming pool drownings every year then we ever will to random shootings by a crazy man.

And lastly exactly how much in resources should we spend to counter a nearly impossible to detect crime- a lunatic who takes guns from a legal and lawful gunowner and then embarks on a madman’s mission. Do you guys think about any of these things? Or do you just regale in taking a supposedly morally superior stance regarding guns?- While all the while ignoring the realistic ability to stop such events as well as the sheer cost of protecting against such random horrors?

Lets see, IF there was a national registry for assault weapons, the perhaps the ATF could have known that a person had purchased several assault style weapons (the shooters mother) and could have found that she was a “doomsday” believer, in that she was stockpiling guns to protect from all those “coming to get her.” It MIGHT have registered on someone’s list.

I have yet to see any credible report that the CT shooter’s mother was a doomsday prepper. It was stated that she was worried about societal collapse by her EX SISTER IN LAW.

The guns and ammo she had in her home were not that much for someone who takes up sport shooting as a hobby.

So you going to have police investigate everyone that might, in someone’s opinion, have too many guns?

They do not take the risks to life of their or others when hitting the road. Their car, while either drunk or not, can be considered a “weapon” when driving recklessly. And we HAVE restrictions, laws and stiff penalties for breaking that law…and when some “lunatic” decides to drive while drunk, it is his/her LEGALLY owned car..and LAWFULLY registered to him/her??? right???

so if I follow your logic on ANY gun related measures, since people still get killed all the time by drunk driving, quit messing with the BAC or taking away their license…or stiffer penalties if they kill someone while driving…these are “legally obtained” cars…and “lawfully” owned vehicles…

It depends on whether the risk is real or not and whether or not anything can realistically be done to counter the risk. I still have yet to see anyone state how a madman who killed a gun owner and took her lawfully owned guns and who then went on a random rampage could have been stopped. I have yet to see anyone opine as to how this realistically could have been stopped.

As I said swimming pools kill far more small children then random crazy man shootings. Are you and the liberals willing to engage in a campaign to ban a known killer?- swimming pools. How many kids die each year in housefires or from monoxide poisoning because the smoke detector wasn’t working because the adult was too damn stupid or too damn lazy to change the batteries or to make sure the device was still operable? A few years back, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) suggested during a CNN interview that we did not, in fact, need additional gun laws. He noted that we already have about 2,200 gun laws on the books, and that the real issue is that those laws are not being properly enforced. Tiahrt went further to suggest that enforcing these laws should not be the purview of state or local law enforcement, namely because we have a government agency – the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) – whose job it is to pursue such enforcement around the clock.
Makes sense. At least if that was the whole story.
The problem is that the ATF hasn’t had a permanent director since 2006. Instead, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota (a full-time job in itself) “commutes” from his home state to serve as an interim director. Seems ridiculous, right? Why not just appoint a new director by executive order? This is how it should work, yes?
In theory. But back in 2006 (a year before Tiahrt’s CNN interview) Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) inserted a clause into the Patriot Act requiring Congress to aprove any appointments to the head of the ATF, which is the sole government agency responsible for the federal control of firearms. Since then, they have failed to approve anyone brought forward by a president to fill that post.

Keep in mind that, for two of those years, the President was George W. Bush.

Strange thing, to put a clause about the ATF into a seemingly unrelated bill. Interesting, also, that the same year this clause found its way into the Patriot Act, Sensenbrenner accepted the NRA’s “Defender of Freedom” award.
Lest we give too much credit where it’s undue, it should be noted that Sensenbrenner didn’t actually write the ATF clause; he simply inserted it into the Patriot Act. The one responsible for writing the clause was – yes, kids – Rep. Todd Tiahrt, the very one who urged us to lean on the ATF to enforce our existing gun laws rather than doing anything else to rectify the problem.

Looks like you had another critical thinking skills FAIL. Drunk driving is something that happens all the time and should be countered. Thousands of people this very day if not tens of thousands will drive impaired or just plain drunk. Are there going to be thousands of random mad man shootings today or any day for that matter? How often do these random crazy man shootings occur and how many people per year die from them compared to how many people die from drunk driving accidents? What was it? 23 compared to 10,000 or 20,000 who die from drunk driving. Drunk driving is much more detectable and the costs of preventing or lessening it are in line with the perceived benefits of saving 10-20,000 lives.

How is it that the liberal mind can’t distinguish between the pure scale and scope of drunk driving which occurs thousands of times per day vs once in awhile random shootings?

A few weeks ago the head of the Navy Seals ate a bullet overseas. Just yesterday they reported on a Las Vegas police detective killing his wife and son before he killed himself. A six year old girl found a gun and shot herself this week in Ohio. A marine shoots and kills his wife who was a police officer, while she was on patrol.

The stories go on and on but you gun nuts persist that only the criminals or the mentally unstable kill people. All of the people listed above were deemed mentally fit (with the exception of the child) to own a gun as was their right but people are dead because of it.

Cry as you will but your arguments are worthless.

Is your point that Republican controlled state houses made sure Congressional districts were drawn in such a way that Democratic districts are packed with 80 to 90% democratic voters and Republican districts are only packed with 55 to 60% Republican voters? Yes, that is what happened in 2010. It is the same thing that has happened in reverse order when Dems control the state legislatures in redistricting years.

You could say the same thing in reverse for the Reagan years. How did the Dems control the House when Reagan won 49 states?

It is called politics son, so what is your point? This is the genius of our founding fathers that did not want anyone (President or either side of Congress) to be able to get anything done without difficult struggle. Government is the enemy of liberty not the friend of it.

The Republicans will maintain control of the House of Reps until at least the 2020 election cycle (if you do not believe me then read the Nate Silver article on the subject).

Law enforcement and civilian groups have been *cooperating* for over 20 years to raise public awareness of the drunk driving problem and to come up with new ways to catch drunks in the act. In some cases, those new ways have consisted of — GASP — laws! Laws under which egregious offenders could be caught and punished — laws with simple, definable parameters like blood alcohol level.

Contrast that with civilian groups like the NRA who — while they *do* advocate safe firearm handling and teaching kids and youth how to safely use and enjoy firearms via competitions, where precisely have they partnered with law enforcement to help catch gun law violators in the act? Where’s the 20-plus-years of cooperation between pro-gun groups and law enforcement to ferret out and catch the bad guys who are violating our gun laws?

It’s one thing to say ‘y’all aren’t doing a good job of prosecuting these kinds of crimes; and quite another to say it and to *help* law enforcement get the job done. Where and how have pro-gun groups shown the same kind of activism in helping to catch the bad guys as groups like MADD have?

IMO similiar to immigration except instead of talking about 20 million subjects we are talking about 310 million…guns in circulation that is..Our government can’t collect taxes adequately, set a budget, enforce immigration laws…how on earth should we believe that any of these measures (should already been undertaken)can reasonably enforced?

Ironically, it will be the ACLU who will fight for the rights of the wrongly diagnosed as subsequently gun-less. Great stuff but impossible to enforce.

More importantly, with many DEMS put in precarious footing (imagine what on earth Harry Reid will do) due to guns and constituencies, is it really likely that much of this will really get done?

Will any of this prevent the increasing shootings for example in Chicago? Will any of this really make kids in Newtowns across the country safer? It’s good policy but the likelihood of any of it materially putting a dent in gun violence is remote.

MADD suggests that drunk driving deaths have been cut in half since inception. They pushed agendas to make sure the guilty endure major penalties including jail time etcetera on a madatory basis early in a drunk drivers career. They have done great work.

Enforcement of the suggested guns laws unfortunately, is not fairly compared to gun violence. Those most likely in any fashion to use a gun to kill probably don’t give a flip about tougher sentences. The death penalty really hasn’t been a deterent for example..

For example, drunk driving still happens. That means “criminals do it anyway,” which means we shouldn’t have restrictions on drunk driving.

It really is a pretty close comparison. Much closer than the false comparison made by pro-gun people who say we are punishing an inanimate object.

BTW, if a car does have a defect, and that’s what causes injury, death, or minor accidents, then the car company DOES have to answer for that. Just FYI.

yep…that exactly has increased revenues for the cities and attorney’s..DUI fatality has dropped in half since the creation of MADD….but overall traffic fatalities have dropped in half as well…so DUI fatalities dropped at the same rate as the all vehicular fatalities (a broader population)…thank, airbags, SRS, crumple zones etc…stricter laws thanks to MADD…not so much

A greater change brought about by MADD is the cultural one. When I was young, drunk driving was winked at, perhaps considered a bit manly (I’m man enough to drive this way!). Now, generally, drunk drivers are considered an evil in society. This, as much as anything, has reduced the amount of drunk driving, as has the “designated driver” concept, etc.

I think the correlation between fatal accidents and “drunk driving” fatalities may be a bit specious – perhaps because the modern car takes a lot less coordination to successfully pilot, fewer drunks crash their cars?

I don’t know where MADD gets their numbers except they cite that since MADD (1980) DUI fatalities have been cut in half…I did per capita comparisons, MADD may be using total numbers (which would be disingenuous since the population has increased some in 30 years) but don’t know for sure. They quote 28k down to 16k in 30 years… in comparison…overall 51k down to 32k for the same years…

So the kids aren’t any safer, killings will continue trend but at least we will limit the number of bullets in some chamber (I guess those “sportsmen” who use these type weapons to hunt will have to brush up on targeting skills)and hysterically running around labeling those with known mental health diagnoses…

Because I’m not talking about *just* shootings.

Do NRA members call 911 if they see someone attempting to sell something illegal or questionable at a gun show or on Craigslist? Do they call 911 if they see someone chamber a round at a gun show? Do they contact the ATF if they see someone online offering full-auto kits and instructions for modifying weapons?

Violating firearms laws includes a lot of things besides gunplay, td.

Not brought up in religious environment. I have no idea what that phrase means. So can I substitute “I Love You” with I God You? I think love means wanting only the best for a particular person……yet your God (sorry I’m not exactly sure how you define it beyond love)is an angry god, defines good versus evil and is the final judge of your body of work..

I thought I understood the law was focused on those previously institutionalized? Maybe it will come under the realm of Homeland Security and we can spend billions enlarging scanning capabilities to include brain scan…can put them a DMV..

If you can find those numbers, I’d be very interested in seeing them. I presume MADD maintains numbers; I don’t know if they release them publicly or give any details on their sources.

I wonder if the NHTSA has what you’re looking for?
