Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who faces re-election in 2014, is doing his part to model the new spirit of moderation and bipartisan compromise that the GOP hopes to demonstrate to voters in the days ahead.
Here’s how he begins a new email message sent out to supporters:
Dear Patriot,
You and I are literally surrounded.
The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights.
On your freedom.
Just the other night, President Obama urged them to act. And then he went one step further, spelling out the 23 different Executive Orders he will take to get your guns.
My friend, our freedom is under direct assault.
From those who want take your guns. From those who want to shred our Constitution, and as our good friend Rand Paul from Kentucky says, from those who want to be King.
Let me tell you, Mitch McConnell is ready to lead the fight to protect your rights.
Will you stand with Mitch today? …
Below I’ve included the full list of 23 executive actions issued by the gun-grabbing “King Obama” regarding firearms. I confess to being curious: When McConnell describes these actions as steps that “(Obama) will take to get your guns,” which specific actions does he mean?
Is it the effort to keep identify people who are too crazy to buy guns? Is it the “national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign”? Or the order to trace all weapons recovered in the commission of a crime? The initiative to train first-responders on how to respond to a school shooting?
Every American voter ought to read McConnell’s letter (full text here), read the list of executive actions issued by Obama, and then decide for himself or herself which party represents the sane, rational way forward for the people of this nation.
1.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2.) Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3.) Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4.) Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5.) Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6.) Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7.) Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8.) Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10.) Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11.) Nominate an ATF director.
12.) Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13.) Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15.) Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16.) Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17.) Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18.) Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19.) Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20.) Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21.) Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22.) Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23.) Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

“The Republican governor approved a revised route for the Canada-to-Texas pipeline which his office said would avoid environmentally sensitive areas.

“And if it’s a teacher who’s gone off the deep end?”
And if he goes off the deep end then what’s the point anyway. He will just bring his gun to school and go crazy there.
“There are more negatives than positives, in my personal and professional opinion, by arming teachers as a safety feature for schools.”
I respectfully disagree and I still don’t see how. They don’t seem to have the following problems that you mention in Israel so if we go by the Israeli example your points below would be without merit.
“As to more risks, you have the potential for accidental discharges.”
People with concealed permits walk around all day long everyday in public and yet I never hear much of accidental discharges just going off so that complaint doesn’t hold much merit.
“A teacher could also have a momentary security lapse and a student ends up with the gun.”
And as we’ve seen at Newtown and in Columbine determined kids could get a hold of a gun regardless. Which is why I mentioned trigger locks. Hows the kid going to use the gun if it has a trigger lock?
“Another thing is weapon retention. If there’s a scuffle and the teacher isn’t capable of maintaining possession of that gun, you just armed someone who has already shown violent tendencies”
Again. Trigger locks. Doesn’t that make this a moot point. And how often do you hear of someone starting a scuffle with someone they know to already be armed?

I’m liberal but I believe gun laws are like immigration laws – there’s enough of them on the books already, we’ve just got to start enforcing them – no amnesty for illegal aliens or unregistered firearms no matter how long they have been here.

Paul,
If you’re talking about profiling I’m not sure of the cost of profiling. I just know that you would have to have some well trained professionals. The way I figure it is that if it works and works well for the Israelis then why not just mimick what they do. No sense in strip searching grannies. The way our TSA does it just reeks of incompetence from the people at the top.
But again, notice how few conservatives weigh in on this? It’s like they’re thinking “I smell an inconsistency in my reasoning coming… can’t see it… but I know it’s there….”
Yeah. I notice. But if you’re referring to the argument you made earlier I just think its that slippery slope that concerns them. Otherwise I would have to agree with you that McConnell’s statements are just a bunch of hyperbole.

Let me see if I get this straight. We have to undergo background checks before being hired, even if one wants to get a job as a warehouse worker, but we get heartburn over background checks before purchasing a deadly weapon? I saw a job ad for sorters in a recycling facility which required the applicants pass a background check. However, as more and more red states chase illegal immigrants back across the border I believe we will see background checks for unskilled labor lessen. Also, our law makers here in Georgia are already working on sentence reform which means less people filling our prisons and more persons being released from incarceration. They have to work somewhere.

F. Sinkwich: O’bozo HATES cheap energy, the very resource that has made us the most prosperous nation ever on the face of the earth
I believe you are completely missing the point on this one. Many people hate pollution. Pollution causes breathing problems in many people. Large cities have large pollution problems.
Sure, we can keep poisoning our air and choke ourselves to death, or we can move to renewable energy, which has a higher initial cost, but lower recurring cost.
Perhaps I overemphasize the “choke ourselves to death” but really. Close up your garage and run your engine in your car. It’s a slower process, but that’s what we’re doing to the atmosphere.
If we, as Americans can reduce dependence on foreign oil, find CHEAPER renewable energy, and get cleaner air; well, we’ll be the well in the lead again. Of course, finding CHEAPER renewable energy will take research and investments. Sheesh, what’s wrong with that?

I doubt it. A pipline is relatively cheap compared to a refinery in the middle of nowhere. It’s not just the cost of building it, it’s also the cost of keeping it supplied. And then they would STILL need a pipeline to get the products to shipping terminals. There’s a very good reason refineries are near shipping ports.

About 10 years ago or so there was a story in the news about this young African-American female high school student and her photo in the school yearbook. She was one of the top ten seniors in her class. Each one of them was told to have their photo taken by something that would reflect their future career desires for a half-page spread in the yearbook.
For example, one of the students who wanted to be a civil engineer had his photo taken by a bulldozer.
Well, she just happened to be very involved in Jr. R.O.T.C. and wanted a career in the Army. She went down to the local VFW in her uniform and posed for her picture by an old 105 howitzer artillery piece.
Guess what? The school would not allow that photo as “it sent the wrong message”.

Yes, it is…but if your customers are in…say…South America…it’s a lot of expense to ship across the Great Lakes, because the ships have to be smaller due to the locks. It saves a LOT of time and money to pipeline it to a terminal where it can be loaded onto super tankers.

The company’s website claimed there were more than 1,000 Solyndra systems installed around the world, representing 100 megawatts of power.
The majority of Solyndra funding was provided under Title XVII section 1705 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (as amended by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).

Sooth – exactly how many monies were appropriated under GW?
Republicans, including Bush, emphasized the program’s benefits for nuclear energy and biofuels. The president touted the new energy law in his 2007 State of the Union address. His energy secretary, Samuel Bodman, regularly mentioned the loan guarantees in speeches on renewable energy. The Energy Department issued its final rules for the program in 2007, along with a list of 16 companies that made the cut for to apply for its first round of awards, and Solyndra was among them.
House Republicans investigating Solyndra have claimed that the Bush administration ultimately rejected the Solyndra loan, but that’s not quite the case. Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and news media point out that Bush energy officials wanted to get the loan closed on their way out the door — it was listed as the first of their “three highest priorities through January 15.” (Obama took office Jan. 20, 2009.) But the Energy Department’s credit committee held things up for more analysis.
“The number of issues unresolved makes a recommendation for approval premature at this time. Therefore, the committee, without prejudice, remands the project to the LGPO [Loan Guarantee Program Office] for further development of information,” the committee said.
It noted Solyndra’s project “appears to have merit.” But the clock had run out.
That didn’t keep Bush from touting the loan guarantee program on his way out of office. On Jan. 6, 2009, in remarks on conservation and the environment from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, he said, “We dedicated more than $18 billion to developing clean and efficient technologies like biofuels, advanced batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, solar and wind power, and clean, safe nuclear power. We’re providing more than $40 billion in loan guarantees to put these technologies to use.”
Ultimately, the Bush administration program didn’t finalize a single loan guarantee.

Howitzer Picture Cut From Yearbook
The Associated Press
Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999; 3:16 p.m. EDT
NEVIS, Minn. –– A high school is refusing to allow a picture to appear in the yearbook of a student sitting on a 155 mm howitzer.
“Nevis High officials said the photo of senior Samantha Jones violates the school’s “zero-tolerance” policy toward weapons.
The policy prohibits images of guns, knives or other weapons on shirts, hats or in pictures. It also bans squirt guns.
The snapshot shows Ms. Jones, who is joining the Army in June, perched on the small cannon outside a Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
“Whether it’s in military, recreational or sporting form, anything shaped like a gun or knife is banned,” said Superintendent Dick Magaard.
Ms. Jones’ mother, Sue Jones, petitioned for a vote by the School Board, which deadlocked 3-3 this week on publishing the photo.
“I back my daughter 100 percent on this. The lawyer will be sending you papers,” she told school officials.
School Board chairman Marv Vredenburg defended Ms. Jones by pointing to war photographs already hanging on school walls. “She is honoring the flag and service,” he said.”

Well, I was trying to prod a response in the best ’subtle but overstated’ blog style, just didn’t think you’d be going for it!
All either of those couple of anti-environmentalists had to say was “Jimmy Carter” and they could’ve made their point.
But the won’t cite commies even when it helps there case, will they?
(BTW – the lowercase ’s’ should’ve been a tip-off I wasn’t taking the exchange too seriously)

The reality is that many Republicans fear, no more precisely shake in their boots, a primary challenge from the extreme fringe element of their party.
I hope, if you actually sat down with Mr. McConnell and discussed the executive orders and the legislation that is expected to be brought for consideration, that none of this raises eyebrows. Sensible approaches that may or may not work. We won’t know until we try some of these.
But Mr. McConnell is terrified of a primary challenge and so he jumps on the bandwagon. If he can appear more fringe than any expected potential challenger he wins.
The problem is we have members of Congress whose SOLE concern is the next election. They are not really interested in representing their constituents. They are all about protecting their elected office and their perceived power. This is no longer a government by and of ordinary citizens but a government by and of elites and those with an interest in making this a career. I’m not ordinarily in favor of constitutional amendments but the time may be right for some term limits. We have done this for the office of President so why wouldn’t the logic equally apply to Congress?

“Nevis High officials said the photo of senior Samantha Jones violates the school’s “zero-tolerance” policy toward weapons.”
Well, I wonder if Nevis officials would ask an officer to remove his weapon before entering the school in an active shooter situation. After all, he would be violating school policy.

“The majority of Solyndra funding was provided under Title XVII section 1705 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (as amended by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).
Gosh, I wonder who was president in 2006 and 2005? Could it have been King Dumbass the First?
Obama’s crew used this Title to fund the Solyndra debacle.
But, I digress, don’t let facts get in the way.

What was the point of your post? The President is already term-limited so your comment about Obama is invalid.
I am talking about Congressmen and Senators that are there for decade after decade. They could care less about what is best for their constituents or the nation. They are only concerned about preserving their position. They take extreme positions if that is what they think they need to win the next election. And it goes on and on for decades. We need to limit Congresspersons to maximum 3, 2-year terms and Senators to 2, 6-year terms. Period.

Try to understand.
It’s really not that hard.
Thousands of women have spontaneous abortions(miscarriages) every week.
The New Testament teaches that God knows even when a sparrow falls out of a tree.
Therefore, God must know, and do nothing, when all these spontaneous abortions take place.
You seem to believe that men and women will be judged harshly because they were involved in abortions but God, the judge, will take no responsibility for all those miscarriages that happened.
Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?
Do you realize how foolish that makes you sound?
For the record, although I am opposed to abortions that are done because someone was too lazy or irresponsible to use a condom, I am not an anti-abortion extremist. There are many bigger problems in our country today. I don’t attempt to impose my opinion on others with respect to the abortion issue. However I would like to point out that your argument doesn’t really make a lot of sense. Thousands of people die every day from natural or health related causes *spontaneously*. Does that justify murder?

USA Patriot: once again, I did not say anything about funding.
The Solyndra “scandal” is emblematic of the demise of manufacturing in this country. Solyndra simply couldn’t compete with solar panels from China where the average salary is $0.50/hr.
There is no scandal. But the Fright-Wing wants to hang this on Obama because he approved funding. By the way, if it was such a bad deal, why did the Waltons (of Wal-Mart fame) invest in it?

My Mother had 3 pregnancies, but only 2 children. She had a spontaneous abortion between me and my sister. When you can PROVE to me that spontaneous abortions never, ever happen…I’ll join you in mourning induced abortions. Until then, I see no difference between them.
That’s like saying children die ( speaking of one or two year olds) so you don’t see any difference in killing them or dying of natural causes!

The problem is Congress is a pariah in our culture. No one likes them. But when you ask someone they think the problem is with everyone else’s representative, not their own.
The entrenched money interests with Congress make it very difficult to remove someone from office. Someone has to be caught openly and flagrantly stealing or murdering before someone is voted from office. Monied interests buy off our elected officials.
The only way we can preserve the Founding Fathers’ belief in a “citizen Congress” is by imposing statutory term limits. Then and only then will members of Congress think beyond the next election and actually consider what is best for their constituents or the nation. Until then they will continue to vote to avoid a primary challenge.
I am open to other suggestions but this is our reality. My congress critter good…your congress critter bad. What do we do to change the dynamics?

Sooth – are you in the media? My goodness, you threw sh$t up about a former administration being responsible for Solyndra, then deflect based on “I did not say anything about funding” bs, and then, then, you try to deflect again about manufacturing in this country, and then again, “By the way, if it was such a bad deal, why did the Waltons (of Wal-Mart fame) invest in it?”. Are you serious? This is a relative of the Walton family, who happens to be an investor (OH MY GOD, THEY LIKE MONEY). I hope you don’t get too dizzy going around in circles!

I agree, voters keep sending the same clowns (both parties) year after year. Why? It is because of carefully orchestrated campaigns, lots of campaign money from 3rd party donors – not usually those of the voters, and voter apathy.
If Citizens United stands we can hardly remove unbridled 3rd party money from the equation. The campaigns will continue to spew the left or right talking points and who knows what we can do to educate and engage the electorate.
But term limits mean that someone who is playing this game has a limited amount of time to create an historical record and move on. Perhaps, just maybe, it would lead to greater courage to vote for the things that really matter or can deliver value rather than an ideologically-driven position. I’m not hopeful for the future but if I look at parliamentary systems around the globe I find hope.

Well much to the disappointment of all the gun grabbers, the latest “school shooting” turned out to be a couple of idiots that decided to duel it out in a gun free zone. No assault rifles, no high capacity “clips”, no body count. Just a couple of community college students fighting.
An incident that begs a focus on culture instead of tools.

It’s southern United States, the United States (or American) South, or the South…just like the midwestern United States, the United States (or American) Midwest, or the Midwest…
And nope…that came into being about 400 years ago when the distinction was first drawn between the Northerners in Plymouth and the Southerners in Virginia…
