Mitch McConnell: “King” Obama out to grab yer guns!

mitch-mcconnell-ap-7-3-12

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who faces re-election in 2014, is doing his part to model the new spirit of moderation and bipartisan compromise that the GOP hopes to demonstrate to voters in the days ahead.

Here’s how he begins a new email message sent out to supporters:

Dear Patriot,

You and I are literally surrounded.

The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights.

On your freedom.

Just the other night, President Obama urged them to act. And then he went one step further, spelling out the 23 different Executive Orders he will take to get your guns.

My friend, our freedom is under direct assault.

From those who want take your guns. From those who want to shred our Constitution, and as our good friend Rand Paul from Kentucky says, from those who want to be King.

Let me tell you, Mitch McConnell is ready to lead the fight to protect your rights.

Will you stand with Mitch today? …

Below I’ve included the full list of 23 executive actions issued by the gun-grabbing “King Obama” regarding firearms. I confess to being curious: When McConnell describes these actions as steps that “(Obama) will take to get your guns,” which specific actions does he mean?

Is it the effort to keep identify people who are too crazy to buy guns? Is it the “national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign”? Or the order to trace all weapons recovered in the commission of a crime? The initiative to train first-responders on how to respond to a school shooting?

Every American voter ought to read McConnell’s letter (full text here), read the list of executive actions issued by Obama, and then decide for himself or herself which party represents the sane, rational way forward for the people of this nation.

1.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2.) Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3.) Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4.) Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5.) Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6.) Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7.) Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8.) Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10.) Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11.) Nominate an ATF director.

12.) Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

13.) Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15.) Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16.) Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17.) Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18.) Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19.) Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20.) Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21.) Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22.) Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23.) Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Gun ownership is a community problem and should be discussed and solved by neighbors. It is no longer acceptable to say “my gun is none of your business”. As my neighbor I have a right to know if you are a registered gun owner especially if we live in a community with a high population density (townhouses, Condo, single family homes, apartments, etc.). – Do I have a *right* to know if your kid has ADHD? If your wife has PPD? How about if you EVER had a DUI, or any other convictions?

Today, communities have home owners associations (HOA) and everyone must follow the rules for pets, trash pick-up, keeping your grass cut, rules for using the community facilities, how many parking spaces allowed, etc. Communities across the USA are faced with choices to solve the gun ownership problem. – WHAT gun owership problems?

Yes, we all agree that a background check and a mental health screening are a good step in the right direction but the American People will have to make a choice. – To make *YOU* feel better while NOT addressing the problem, i.e. CRIMINALS with guns.

1. Do we act like adults and take responsibility for our actions and live with our neighbors in peace and harmony by opening a meaningful dialogue on guns in our community and their impact on our quality of life? – You may want to start with your own push for invading your neighbors privacy.

2. Today, we publish names and addresses of child molestors, rapist and other people who use “fear” as their weapon of choice. Is it time for all registered gun owners to be listed in a national register just like we do to protect our children from predators? – So now, you equate CRIMINALS (rapists and child molestors) with LAW ABIDING, HONEST, RESPONSIBLE citizens? Is THAT how you start meaningful dialog?

If gun owners have nothing to “fear” they should embrace the opportunity to explain to their neighbors why they feel compelled to own guns in our neighborhood. We have a choice. – They DO NOT owe you S**T!! Much less an explaination. YOU don’t want a close neighbor, YOU move.

It is time for adults to act like adults for the sake of their family, friends and neighbors… – You should start FIRST.
Your gun is my business…- NO IT IS NOT. Just like your bedroom in none of MY business.

Act responsible – Act mature.

“So Doom..the only suggestion you have is to arm the teachers….so more guns will curb gun violence??”

Seriously folks,

What is it about the concept of deterrence that you guys simply cannot understand. Take a look at the Batman movie shooter. The guy bypassed 2 or 3 theaters that were closer to his home. He went to the one farther out because it had signs stating no guns allowed. So he knew no one would be armed that obeys the law and rules. Is that just too much common sense for you to understand? If you’re a shooter are you going to go to a school where you know that several of the teachers are armed? Um. No. Its just common damn sense really. Jeez.

“Aren’t we the most heavily armed society on the planet, yet we have the highest instances of gun-related deaths?? That IS a puzzler, huh?”

Go back and see scout’s post at 12:22 showing that the U.S. is far less deaths per 100,000 than a whole range of countries. Facts are facts sir.

TBG: Below is yet another example of why there can be no rational, civil, and PRODUCTIVE discussion about gun control:

Sure you can. You just have to ignore and/or dismiss the loony arguments.

If you really want to have a reasonable dialog, it should be centered around a goal. A goal we can all agree on. And if that can’t even be achieved, as seems to be the case, that is when we can’t really go very far.

I will go take a long shower after this, but, I agree with Doom about Newtown. There’s not much you can do to end this type of violence. We can arm teachers, add more Resource Officers, etc. and if someone wants to take this type of action they will. I would like to see it harder for the Lanza’s, Holmes of the world to obtain weapons thru background checks, but, where’s the a will there’s a way. And I doubt that a teacher with a gun or a theatre patron would have stopped these crazies – both had high powered weapons and body armour. Let’s remember that when a school officer leaves his gun in the school bathroom for a kid to find, these very same cons also claim “accidents happen”. SO now their real assertion, without a shred of evidence, is that guns in schools will intentionally save more kids than those that will be accidently killed or injured because of the presence of those very same guns that they urge be present.

“It’s just pure hyperbole and rhetoric imo. The right does it as well as the left.”

Okay, so McConnell’s statement is pure hyperbole. No argument from me. But again – why does it take 600 pages for someone who’s not keen on gun control to say so?

Can’t any of the others say so? Or maybe they think McConnell’s right but they just can’t think of a way to say so in face of the facts?

I own several hand guns and a shot gun. Used to go to the range a decent amount but not so much last couple of years.

For the record, closing of some “loopholes” and might do some good, but none of the Obama proposals imo will stop a crazy man from doing what he did at that school.

Brocephus,

I did not state that you said that. I asked a rhetorical question. Why do you always think that someone is trying to put words in your mouth? I’m simply asking wouldn’t people be inclined to sue a school system if they felt there wasn’t reasonable security to begin with?

It’s getting real in New York.
.

I never underestimate the utter evil, brutality, and deceitfulness that is the State. And if New York’s rulers force this thing, the scenario you describe is tragically probable — a few “examples” here and there, whom the cops murder or imprison to the praise of the New York Slimes and other reprehensible propagandists.

Those New Yorkers who own guns should understand how likely it is that some of you will die. When the Redcoats marched on Lexington and Concord to seize the Patriots’ arms, they killed farmers who resisted — exactly as the standing army among us called cops will kill you. But for sure, if some don’t die, if we don’t resist this lawless, unconstitutional, despotic theft of our weapons, the government will slaughter many more in concentration camps or gulags, the fate of other peoples whose governments have disarmed them. I also urge all who love freedom, no matter where you live, to rush to your fellow serfs’ defense if Cuomo and his fiends begin shooting New Yorkers.

The line in the sand is grabbing guns. We can live, albeit in horribly reduced circumstances, with an economy Our Rulers have devastated. We can circumvent official sexual assault at the airports by boycotting the airlines. We can buy and sell contraband on the black market. But we can’t defend ourselves and our families without guns.

David Gay, the speaker in this video, sent it to me (thanks, David!). As encouraging as his speech and its enthusiastic reception is the size of the crowd. The dire scenarios Bill and I envision may never descend: after all, not even the worst totalitarian can wreak his wickedness if enough people defy him. And plenty of New Yorkers are defiant. Keep the faith, Sons of Liberty, keep the faith.

“Are we seriously discussing the security needs of Israeli schools in the same context as the security needs of American schools?”

josef,

Yes. We are. That’s if people really believe that these school shootings are an epidemic as some seem to believe. If its not very serious or its not the epidemic that some people think it is then we need not do anything. So do you think the situation is serious enough to look at serious alternatives or not? And if some teachers are allowed to bring guns as long as they are trained and as long as the guns have trigger locks then what is your concern?

As it stands now, teachers are responsible for educating students. When you arm them, they become law enforcement, and their job duties, responsibilities, and liabilities change as a result. There are other options that don’t change the operation or structure of the school system.

You can redesign schools with safe rooms and escape pathways to quickly get students out of harms way. Schools can be upgraded with ballistic doors. Schools can also be reconfigured to lock down sections at a time to isolate any incident and lock the assailant into a small area making it easier for police to respond. That said, I see arming personnel as a liability more than a benefit.
