Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who faces re-election in 2014, is doing his part to model the new spirit of moderation and bipartisan compromise that the GOP hopes to demonstrate to voters in the days ahead.
Here’s how he begins a new email message sent out to supporters:
Dear Patriot,
You and I are literally surrounded.
The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights.
On your freedom.
Just the other night, President Obama urged them to act. And then he went one step further, spelling out the 23 different Executive Orders he will take to get your guns.
My friend, our freedom is under direct assault.
From those who want take your guns. From those who want to shred our Constitution, and as our good friend Rand Paul from Kentucky says, from those who want to be King.
Let me tell you, Mitch McConnell is ready to lead the fight to protect your rights.
Will you stand with Mitch today? …
Below I’ve included the full list of 23 executive actions issued by the gun-grabbing “King Obama” regarding firearms. I confess to being curious: When McConnell describes these actions as steps that “(Obama) will take to get your guns,” which specific actions does he mean?
Is it the effort to keep identify people who are too crazy to buy guns? Is it the “national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign”? Or the order to trace all weapons recovered in the commission of a crime? The initiative to train first-responders on how to respond to a school shooting?
Every American voter ought to read McConnell’s letter (full text here), read the list of executive actions issued by Obama, and then decide for himself or herself which party represents the sane, rational way forward for the people of this nation.
1.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2.) Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3.) Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4.) Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5.) Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6.) Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7.) Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8.) Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10.) Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11.) Nominate an ATF director.
12.) Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13.) Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15.) Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16.) Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17.) Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18.) Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19.) Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20.) Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21.) Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22.) Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23.) Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Good questions Stevie…. All I know is that law abiding citizens who follow the rules are not the problem. The people who don’t follow the rules will always find a way to gain access to a gun…. More gun control laws will do NOTHING, but put added burden on law abiding citizens… Mental health has always been a issue that no one wants to talk about.. Start talking about things that will help.. NOT things that compromise our liberty and freedoms… IMHO, your will likely differ…

FISCAL conservative is neither Repub or Dem. I am not a member of either party. I have explained what a FISCAL conservative is many times. You evidently are a slow learner. To make it SIMPLISTIC for you – FISCAL conservatism is all about spending within the budget and balancing that budget from year to year and not going over that budget. That is what the state of Georgia has; a balanced budget amendment to the state constitution. That is what FISCAL conservatives want….. a balanced budget. Obviously OBAMA and the Dems are FISCAL liberals. Did you know that according to the U.S. Constitution it is illegal for the Congress to not provide a budget by April 1st for the coming year? Did you know that we pay $15,000,000 each year for the gub’ment to hire people to come up with a balanced budget? Did you know that Obama has not once provided a budget agenda for the coming year since he has been in office? Obama’s and the Dems refusal to even provide a budget is an unconstitutional violation of federal law. Not to mention the millions payed out for a job not done – more Obama gub’ment created jobs I guess?

“I thought I understood the law was focused on those previously institutionalized?”
I thought we already had laws on the books concerning the mentally ill getting access to guns. Not sure but I thought we did. I’m for anything that would reasonably reduce crazy shiite like Newtown but I honestly just don’t think much can be done. My suggestion was to allow teachers to bring in guns with trigger locks and reimburse them for professional training. Otherwise I just don’t think there is a solution at a reasonable cost.
As for the cat I’m still waiting on him to ante up and back up his statement that I “applauded” the Newtown massacre.

td — “How can you say NRA members are not helping enforce the current laws when you can not tell us if it is NRA members or not that are calling 911 when they see shootings happen?”
Because I’m not talking about *just* shootings.
Do NRA members call 911 if they see someone attempting to sell something illegal or questionable at a gun show or on Craigslist? Do they call 911 if they see someone chamber a round at a gun show? Do they contact the ATF if they see someone online offering full-auto kits and instructions for modifying weapons?
Violating firearms laws includes a lot of things besides gunplay, td
I do not know if they do or if they do not and you my friend can not prove it either. Would the ATF or local law enforcement admit that NRA people are calling them about illegal sales? Is selling a gun over the internet a crime?

Can we at least agree that when Obama was in the IL senate he voted to not allow people to use a handgun to protect themselves in their own home ? Does Obama get a pass on what he did prior to becoming president ? He voted against the right to own a gun for self defense and he voted to not raise the spending cap when Bush was in office.

Gun Control is about Government Control
·In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. >From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. …
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note my fellow Americans, before it’s too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are ‘citizens’. Without them, we are ’subjects’. During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!! IT’S A NO BRAINER! DON’T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET. Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! It’s time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us. HISTORY shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people~

Cornel West: President Obama Doesn’t Deserve To Be Sworn In With MLK’s Bible
What is REALLY unintelligent, is that we actually thought that an African American president would waltz into the White House and make Black issues his priority. Black issues should be OUR priority Cornell. Get up out of your comfy arm chair where you spout ideologies and do some real work! The Middle Class is the backbone of America; he had to shore up the Middle Class. He spent is first 4 years in office righting the wrongs that had been done, fixing problems. How do you think the poor get supported, you great Intelligentsia?! They are supported by the Middle Class! Who gets policy passed on behalf of poor people? The Middle Class! But if the MIddle Class is struggling, they can’t help anybody or speak and rally on behalf of ANYBODY! And it’s usually the WHITE Middle Class that takes the lead on such activism. NOT your Cornell Wests. On the drone issue. Is it a horrible shame that innocents have to die when drones are used? Absolutely! But yes sir, that’s the casualty of war, and as much as I, myself, am opposed to war, I am not so naive that the first Black president is going to waltz into office and end a millenium’s long problem, and bring and end to all wars. Get real! Didn’t he get Osama Bin Laden. You whined when Bush didn’t go after him. Now you’re whining because Obama did get him. Isn’t he ending that entire fiasco and cleaning up the mess? There has been a plethora of governmental atrocities that you could have organized and mobilized the masses about, but YOU DIDN’T! Now, you want to put the weight of the world on one man?! Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not the President of the United States. And if you love him so much, where is your outcry against those who say he, himself, was a sell out – that he delivered the I Have a Dream Speech several times – that he had extramarital affairs – that he was afraid to speak out against the war at first because he feared losing his white support that financed his activities, that he was friends with L.B. J. and when that relationship went sour, THEN, he spoke out. No, you House Slaves won’t speak out against those voices, but you berate the Pres. out of pure jealously. Tavis thought HE was going to be the next MLK and he’s afraid Black folk might start thinking of Obama as the next MLK. And Cornell West is simply Tavis’ yes man. You’re afraid YOU won’t be the model and example of a Black man held up before our Black youth. You want to talk about the sickness in the Black community? You are the manifestation. At a time when our young people have an opportunity to be inspired, to be uplifted, to be motivated, to see what they can become, not just Pres of the US, but a decent Black man with a healthy Black family, you want to destroy that image for your own self aggrandizement. You have profited from your negation of President Barack Obama. I simply raised my eyebrows at you 4 years ago; now. Even when you made that idiotic statement to Minister Louis Farrakhan in Houston about not getting your children out of a burning house; for the sake of Tavis’ Town Hall meeting which was merely the promotion of his book, you turned the audience against Minister Farrakhan, now you’re trying to turn people against the Pres. I have lost all of my respect for you.

Mass shootings at 4 colleges since 1.1.2013…… but sure things are just fine with the gun nuts.
I’m wondering,( just the “conspiracy theorist” in me mind you), if all this press ON shootings is just trying to inoculate us from the violence of our society.
Case in point, during the first few weeks of Desert Storm, when the US were bombing Iraq 3 to 4x per day. At first the Iraquis were scared, running to their shelters, hiding their children. But after weeks and weeks of the bombing, they became desensitized to the noise of the warning sirens.
Im wondering if the same thing is happening here / now with the press.

Still slippery slope from civil rights perspective but more importantly, many if not most of those will such illnesses have faculties capable of avoiding diagnosis once the cat is out of the bag…I just see too many problems identifying with any efficacy that limited number of dangerous folks that shouldn’t have guns who also will be diagnosed. All this gun hysteria is bad for the poorer people in our society. Gun prices and ammunition have gone up since the talk of more controls began. If you are poor or lower middle class, it will be unaffordable to protect your family with a firearm. I know I would like to purchase a few, but the costs of ownership are too high.
As for the term “Assault Rifle”, isn’t any gun used against someone else an ‘assault weapon’? Does it really matter if a gun holds 30 rounds or an assailant has 3 magazines with 10 rounds each in them? At least an assault rifle can’t be concealed.

A convicted murderer, who spent time in a hospital for mental illness after he killed his mother, legally obtained a permit and purchased an arsenal of guns because of a loophole in the Minnesota legislation.
Christian Oberender, now 32, killed his mother in the family’s home with five shots from a shotgun in 1995, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He was 14-years-old at the time and was eventually committed to a hospital for being mentally ill and dangerous. Despite this, Oberender was able to obtain a gun permit last May and has since amassed an arsenal of 13 guns, including semi-automatic rifles, an AK-47, a Tommy gun, assorted shotguns and a .50-caliber Desert Eagle. http://www.startribune.com/local/west/187610601.html?refer=y
There’s no need for concern. Everything’s fine. Enforce the laws on the books…oh wait, a loophole allows this to be legal despite a mental illness adjudication?

Minnesota’s gun laws don’t require an applicant to provide a fingerprint or a Social Security number to verify identity.
“This was one of our concerns during the ‘Conceal and Carry’ debate in Legislature 10 years ago and it was beaten down like everything else,” said Heather Martens, executive director of Protect Minnesota, a gun violence prevention organization.
Martens said Oberender’s case highlights the reluctance of lawmakers to tighten gun laws because they fear being accused of infringing on individual rights

It seems appropriate this day after the King holiday to recall that Dr. King’s efforts to secure and maintain liberty and equality for all succeeded for the most part because he prevailed in his insistence that many laws be abolished. The faux constitutional scholar now in residence in the White House is striving to secure his own power by establishing an unprecedented number of new laws.

DDR, I think there is always fatigue. The NRA counts on it. Right now, however, the nightmare of these killings will drive the support for gun control that has been long delayed. This is not a rush to pass rash laws. Sensible gun control groups have been pressing for these changes and to make sensible requirements for background checks for years. Too many politicians were too afraid of the NRA. However, the momentum has changed.

Less than 25 or 50 killed in mass murdering crazy man rampages per year vs several thousand killed by thugs. So going by pure numbers which do you have a greater chance of dying from?
And btw I noticed that you didn’t respond to my statement that more small children die from swimming pools than from mass shootings. Smart move. CT had very stringent gun control laws. Those controls did nothing to prevent the tragedy there. More gun control by the Fed govt. will not prevent such shootings. So what is the real purpose of Fed, Govt. involvement? Is it to identify all of those who own guns? Why do they need to know this? Even the dumbest among you on this blog (and there are lots of you) have to realize there is more to this than the “14 points” listed by Bookman. Since Timothy McVeigh all the shooters have been liberals. I think this is a group of crazy whacko liberals doing the shooting even if it means self sacrifice to win the sympathy of the American people to take away the guns. It does fit their agenda as their liberal teachers have expressed in their books.
What another shooting? It has to be liberals attacking the system.

What strikes me as most interesting in this whole debate is the willingness with which the left just gives away individual liberties. Stop for just a minute and take your precious Obama out of the picture. If you are so willing to give away liberties (privacy, guns, or anything else) to the current administration, what will you do when an administration you disagree with turns on you and you have no recourse. Don’t get me wrong, the Right is primarily responsible for the reprehensible “Patriot Act” so they are just as bad.
1st, people need to step back and take personalities out of the debate and think about what they are allowing to happen. 2nd, people need to realize that the government already has many of the powers outlined in these executive orders, all Obama is doing is ordering them to be enforced. While I don’t personally agree with the rampant sacrifice of personal liberties, I don’t see that his agenda accomplishes anything new. The BATF referred over 70,000 suspicious background checks to the DOJ for prosecution since 2001 and they’ve managed to prosecute 77 cases. In light of that fact what can either side say we have done here but further restrict the freedoms of law abiding citizens.
Wake up and live in liberty like the proud people who fought and died to earn it for us you freaking cowards! And stop the foolish kneejerk liberty grabbing every time something sensational happens. Responsible gun owners have a right to their guns, irresponsible ones don’t. Establish the law accordingly and be done with it. The size, caliber, etc. has nothing to do with it.

Teachers aides in Israel are armed and have thwarted or deterred attacks by terrorists. If you or the libs have a better idea than please present it. I’ld be happy to hear it. Keep: DDR, I think there is always fatigue.
I hope/pray that you’re right Keep. I really do. Tired of seeing the blood of little children being used as a pulpit by the NRA for even MORE guns.

Whether Meli’s self-reported actions prevented additional loss of life that day is a matter of speculation – since Jacob Roberts killed himself at the scene, there’s no way of knowing for sure whether his being confronted by an armed citizen might have caused him to break off shooting earlier than he otherwise would have.
But pro-gun people would prefer to speculate. All the while ignoring the times conceal carry areas did NOT have someone stop a shooter.
“Gun free zones” are not an invitation and conceal carry does not reduce crime. Crazy people care about neither of these things. Nor do criminals, by a 60-70% margin, according to a study done where criminals were ASKED what would deter them.
