Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who faces re-election in 2014, is doing his part to model the new spirit of moderation and bipartisan compromise that the GOP hopes to demonstrate to voters in the days ahead.
Here’s how he begins a new email message sent out to supporters:
Dear Patriot,
You and I are literally surrounded.
The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights.
On your freedom.
Just the other night, President Obama urged them to act. And then he went one step further, spelling out the 23 different Executive Orders he will take to get your guns.
My friend, our freedom is under direct assault.
From those who want take your guns. From those who want to shred our Constitution, and as our good friend Rand Paul from Kentucky says, from those who want to be King.
Let me tell you, Mitch McConnell is ready to lead the fight to protect your rights.
Will you stand with Mitch today? …
Below I’ve included the full list of 23 executive actions issued by the gun-grabbing “King Obama” regarding firearms. I confess to being curious: When McConnell describes these actions as steps that “(Obama) will take to get your guns,” which specific actions does he mean?
Is it the effort to keep identify people who are too crazy to buy guns? Is it the “national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign”? Or the order to trace all weapons recovered in the commission of a crime? The initiative to train first-responders on how to respond to a school shooting?
Every American voter ought to read McConnell’s letter (full text here), read the list of executive actions issued by Obama, and then decide for himself or herself which party represents the sane, rational way forward for the people of this nation.
1.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2.) Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3.) Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4.) Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5.) Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6.) Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7.) Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8.) Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10.) Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11.) Nominate an ATF director.
12.) Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13.) Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14.) Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15.) Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16.) Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17.) Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18.) Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19.) Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20.) Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21.) Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22.) Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23.) Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Stevie Ray: Those most likely in any fashion to use a gun to kill probably don’t give a flip about tougher sentences.
However, some of the measures DO address exactly that as deterrent, and also address middle men or people who facilitate the person committing the crime, knowingly or not, for example.

Sure it is. You just are buying the tautological argument that is neither here nor there that “criminals do it anyway.”
For example, drunk driving still happens. That means “criminals do it anyway,” which means we shouldn’t have restrictions on drunk driving.
It really is a pretty close comparison. Much closer than the false comparison made by pro-gun people who say we are punishing an inanimate object.
BTW, if a car does have a defect, and that’s what causes injury, death, or minor accidents, then the car company DOES have to answer for that. Just FYI.

Goodness, Jay continues to lead with the far right of the repubs and boy has he brought out the partisanship…as usual, a helpful fellow. Let’s see if we can find something in politics that is a little less disagreeable than gun rights the day after the ceremony where we were asked to fight for the common good and be Americans first….Or we could follow Jays lead and look for those issues that exacerbate a “bunker” mentality…HMMMMM!!!.
This president has led with a specific agenda, let’s see if he can work with both sides and bring some agreements on gay, climate, and fiscal issues. Or we could go on quoting those of the right who have already shown their stripes and will be reclcitrant to rational discussion. Now, where’s that bunker…..!?

Morality – I do not belong to the cult of Obama. If I belong to any cult it is the cult of fiscal conservatism, the world according to Barry Goldwater. You remember Goldwater? He was the guy who preached small government, fiscal responsibility, and individual freedom. That’s the same Barry Goldwater Planned Parenthood in Arizona has an award named after.
I guess, since there are so few of us fiscal conservative left, we could be considered a cult. Obama certainly isn’t a fiscal conservative. And George W. Bush wasn’t, the government expanded at a quicker rate during his tenure than it had since FDR. So no, the GOP may preach fiscal conservatism but in practice they’re anything but. It’s a party that’s been destroyed by right wing evangelicals, and evangelicalism, the belief in “cheap grace”, is the lowest form religion in existence.

Interesting. So along your way of thinking, how many gun deaths are actually attributed to the mentally ill…that being diagnosed in advance? How many are attributed to someone otherwise mentally grounded who can’t handle certain circumstances? How many are attributed to crime?
How exactly do we legally identify which of the above is a mental risk before a gun killing?

The rate is not exactly the same. What we did there was address multiple reasons for car accidents causing injury and death, while ALSO addressing the KNOWN likelihood of a motor vehicle operator under the influence as being more likely to cause an accident. The numbers is the numbers, and the correlation is pretty damn strong on both ends. We can deal with more than one problem at a time, man.

“Law enforcement and civilian groups have been *cooperating* for over 20 years to raise public awareness of the drunk driving problem and to come up with new ways to catch drunks in the act. In some cases, those new ways have consisted of — GASP — laws! Laws under which egregious offenders could be caught and punished — laws with simple, definable parameters like blood alcohol level.”
So tell us something that we don’t already know. Irrelevant point anyway.
“Contrast that with civilian groups like the NRA who — while they *do* advocate safe firearm handling and teaching kids and youth how to safely use and enjoy firearms via competitions, where precisely have they partnered with law enforcement to help catch gun law violators in the act? Where’s the 20-plus-years of cooperation between pro-gun groups and law enforcement to ferret out and catch the bad guys who are violating our gun laws?”
Police work is not their job. Its the police’s job.
“It’s one thing to say ‘y’all aren’t doing a good job of prosecuting these kinds of crimes; and quite another to say it and to *help* law enforcement get the job done. Where and how have pro-gun groups shown the same kind of activism in helping to catch the bad guys as groups like MADD have?”

Critical thinking skills fail. I doubt that a lot of the people that committ murders were “law abiding” citizens to begin with.
Thats an illogical statement.
Murder is a LEGAL definition defined in law and there are degrees of murder that necessitates a different tract or path.
A battered wife may “murder” her husband after years of abuse, however the law can say her offense was either 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree etc., dependent upon her state of mind at the time of the act.
If This battered wife before the incident happened had no criminal record OR no criminal intent, then what she did was NOT necessarily MURDER or an act of malice.
to say, “I doubt that a lot of the people that committ murders were “law abiding” citizens to begin with.” is simplistic and negates from your point that you were trying to make.

I’m not buying into any argument except practicality. One is made for killing and nothing else. The other is a necessity for most folks and only intentionally used as killing device in immaterial numbers.
Expanding laws against gun ownership and use will not discourage killings. It needs to take place but from a practical perspective, only likely to make those using guns responsible to add another layer to responsibility.
I’m cynical about the efficacy of any ideas that supposedly will reduce the number of killings. The best outcome has come courtesy of Roe V Wade…Unfortunately, the gun genie has 240 or so years out of the bottle…I simply see these laws for the most part as unenforceable without privacy, manpower, expense, and prevention perspectives…

==============
A greater change brought about by MADD is the cultural one. When I was young, drunk driving was winked at, perhaps considered a bit manly (I’m man enough to drive this way!). Now, generally, drunk drivers are considered an evil in society. This, as much as anything, has reduced the amount of drunk driving, as has the “designated driver” concept, etc.
I think the correlation between fatal accidents and “drunk driving” fatalities may be a bit specious – perhaps because the modern car takes a lot less coordination to successfully pilot, fewer drunks crash their cars?

Erwin: How is what MADD has done any better than what technology has accomplished?
I’m not arguing for MADD. I am arguing that drunk driving issues were addressed, and that had an effect, and that safety issues were also addressed, and that had an effect. Those effects are separate. You contend that the safety issues trump the drunk driving issues and in fact nullify any attempts to deal with drunk driving. The onus is on you to prove that the safety issues are 100% responsible for lowering fatalities and that drunk driving measures have had zero effect.

The point of our founders was that an unchecked and not controlled government will take our liberties to increase their power. The genius of our founders is that they came up with a system that allows government to function but makes it almost impossible for them to enact laws, especially over a short time period, that will place our liberties in danger. This is exactly how it should be. Making laws should be difficult and the rights of the minority group must be protected from the overreach of government.

Not sure what you mean. I remember driving cars from the 70s and 80s. It wasn’t any different in terms of requiring “coordination” than driving a car today. I am a FISCAL conservative.
Another meaningless Republican slogan for the uninformed.
American capitalism is VERY economically liberal. (Yep, another of those words you have no working knowledge of, but hate anyway!) But let’s not let real definitions get in the way of your Republispeak!
Economic liberalism is the ideological belief in organizing the economy on individualist lines, such that the greatest possible number of economic decisions are made by private individuals and not by collective institutions. It includes a spectrum of different economic policies, but it is always based on strong support for a market economy and private property in the means of production. Although economic liberalism can also be supportive of government regulation to a certain degree, it tends to oppose government intervention in the free market when it inhibits free trade and open competition.

Ah the never let a crisis go to waste theology of the left. Take advantage of the emotional state of the people and then try to implement an agenda item that is not even related to the actual issue. Incrementalism at its best.

Adam: DDR: Of course he’s not going to answer you. He only answers when he thinks he is right.
Yeah I know — his argument is interesting, however he’s messing it up with inaccurate analysis. So when he does that, he’s going to move the goal post. case in point: (Doom – Its the scale and perspective thing biting you libs in the butt again isn’t it? I’m sure some of the murders were the first crime committed by a law abiding citizen. But I’ld be willing to wager the overwhelming majority of them were done by thugs with criminal records.)
When Doom made his ORIGINAL comment, he stated, “ I doubt that a lot of the people that committ murders were “law abiding” citizens to begin with. as an absolute — backing himself into a corner.
Afterwards, to save his argument, he CHANGED his position, only slightly, to slightly agree BUT also to totally cloud the intent of his original post.
You see that Adam^^^ THAT’s why Doom is into insurance! Have you ever read an insurance agreement/contract that wasn’t shrouded in goobledegook? He knows his stuff.

So to reduce killings from gun violence isn’t the goal?
Finally someone admits this is simply a knee-jerk reaction based on politics due to the pressure politicians felt to do something..
So the kids aren’t any safer, killings will continue trend but at least we will limit the number of bullets in some chamber (I guess those “sportsmen” who use these type weapons to hunt will have to brush up on targeting skills)and hysterically running around labeling those with known mental health diagnoses…

Granny Godzilla,
Nope. You failed again. We know people in institutions- prison, hospitals for the mentally ill, etc. get help with drugs and treatment. But we weren’t not talking about institutionalized people now were we? We were talking about mentally ill people who are out in the free world roaming around. Again. Your example has no pertinence.

Because I’m not talking about *just* shootings.
Do NRA members call 911 if they see someone attempting to sell something illegal or questionable at a gun show or on Craigslist? Do they call 911 if they see someone chamber a round at a gun show? Do they contact the ATF if they see someone online offering full-auto kits and instructions for modifying weapons?
Violating firearms laws includes a lot of things besides gunplay, td.

Not brought up in religious environment. I have no idea what that phrase means. So can I substitute “I Love You” with I God You? I think love means wanting only the best for a particular person……yet your God (sorry I’m not exactly sure how you define it beyond love)is an angry god, defines good versus evil and is the final judge of your body of work..

They quote 28k down to 16k in 30 years… in comparison…overall 51k down to 32k for the same years…”
If you can find those numbers, I’d be very interested in seeing them. I presume MADD maintains numbers; I don’t know if they release them publicly or give any details on their sources.

Well, people whine and cry about the Republicans being the demons and not fair in their analysis of gun-control and abortion. Let us look at Chicago and their success-story of gun-control in the city with very stringent laws pertaining to firearms and their ownership and control. The city had over 500 deaths in 2012 that were the result of murder by firearms wielded by citizens that are prohibited from owning them. There were more deaths on the mean-streets of Chicago than our troops experienced in Afghanistan in 2012. A fine success-story for the Left.
How many fetuses were dealt with in Chicago in 2012? Where are those numbers? I did not say infants, I said fetuses. So, add them all up, firearms deaths and abortions, and tell us how good your point-of-view works.

The point of our founders was that an unchecked and not controlled government will take our liberties to increase their power.
Not quite right………….
the point of our Founding Fathers was that an unchecked and uncontrolled PERSON or ENTITY (like the KING they just overturned), will take our liberties and our freedom.
In their times, the King and the King’s will WAS the government. There weren’t at that time any other instances of a nation/country ruling itself outside of a monarchy or theocracy. REmember, the USA was just an EXPERIMENT; no one knew if it would fail or grow; but they did know that they did not want to become another monarchy where a ruling family or entity’s word was law.
People, when making absolutes about what the FF’s were thinking, (as in the 2nd Ammendment), make the mistake of putting them in OUR time.

Morality?: Please move up to the New Testament. God is LOVE.
Trying to define God in any way just shows us trying to put God into a context we, as humans, understand.
Unfortunately, God is incomprehensible, so any attempt to downgrade him to anything understandable by humans really does a disservice.
Jesus attempted to help humans understand by using parables, but like then, people still do not understand.

But it seems there are a LOT of people who don’t know that wasn’t true in England at the time of the Revolution. At the time of the American Revolution England was not ruled under the “Divine Right of Kings” principle. It was, as it is now, a Constitutional Monarchy.
