Obama II: What will the next four years hold?

Barack Obama was officially if informally sworn into office for the second time Sunday, but the formal, public ceremony is taking place today, on a bright, cold Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with Obama taking the oath on bibles owned by King and President Abraham Lincoln.

11:38 — A nicely done, dignified prayer by civil rights leader Myrlie-Evers Williams, a woman who has seen a lot.
11:41: With Sen. Schumer of New York as inaugural planner, it’s understandable that a Brooklyn choir is doing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” But really, a southern choir would have done it righteously.
11:47 Taking his oath, Biden’s just repeating what Sotomayor is saying. Didn’t he get in trouble for that once?
11:51: Obama takes oath, with one small stumble certain to cause comment among a few. The Capitol looks resplendent.
11:58: A call from Obama to the necessity of joint, unified action. “My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it if we seize it together.”
12:03 “Social Security, Medicare … do not make us a nation of takers”
12:04: A call to action on climate change. The first real news of the day, committing to a second-term goal.
12:08: A strong embrace of gay rights, equal respect, immigration reform … a broadening of the American family.
12:10: “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.” I suspect that was directed to some Dems as well as Republicans.
12:12: A relatively brief address by the president, with talk of national unity and purpose interspersed with indirect if sharp reminders of issues that divide us.
12:20: A rather prosaic effort by poet Richard Blanco.
12:31: But a stirring version of the Star Spangled Banner by the lovely and talented Beyonce to close the ceremony.

The next four years?
Maybe in the next four years a family that could not get health insurance due to a pre-existing condition now can. Maybe the “moocher” young entrepreneur that makes $100,000 a year but doesn’t have insurance because he doesn’t think he needs it will HAVE to buy insurance. Maybe the economy will continue its slow but upward growth. Maybe the housing market will continue its rebound. Maybe unemployment will continue downward (wish it were faster).
On the other hand – we can almost guarantee that the next four years will be constant Congressional gridlock, with neither party willing to COMPROMISE and do some REAL work on the deficit (forget talking about the DEBT).
Maybe both side could reach a “middle of the road”, realistic compromise on immigration reform ( I won’t hodl my breath on that one either).

More about the lying NRA.
It seems that some of the inflation comes from doing what the Mormons do – counting the dead. Yes, you read that correctly. Journalist Osha Gray revealed to Mother Jones that the numbers are inflated by at least one million.
“Two years ago, David Gross, then an NRA board member, confided to me that a substantial number of the group’s 1 million Life Members are, well, dead. “There just isn’t that much incentive to go find out when someone passes away,” Gross explained. ‘Not when the cost of maintaining (a dead member) is minimal and when they add to your membership list.’”
Another way that the organization fudges its numbers is by requiring someone to become a member in order to practice shooting at their local range. Not all ranges require this, but some choose to do it so that they can qualify for grant money from the NRA. It’s hard to fathom exactly how many clubs require this of their members, but surely the number cannot be discounted.
One other way that the NRA adds fake members is through membership drives. Like any organization that is trying to increase membership, it acquires lists that contain people’s names and addresses. It sends postcards to people on the list, and if they send it back, their name gets added to the membership rolls. In fact, there’s a case where someone received one of those postcards and sent it back with comments that they did not want to belong. Lo and behold, the person received their very own NRA membership card. Knowing that the organization doesn’t care to clean up its membership rolls by checking to see if someone has passed away, it’s highly probable that they would ignore what someone writes on a postcard, and enroll them anyway.
This deception in membership numbers may not seem that important. However, in light of the recent backlash against the NRA for lack of cooperation to close loopholes in the law, and even finger-pointing at other causes for mass shootings, this only points out the hypocrisy of it all. If the NRA is willing to lie about something as simple as how many people have joined the organization willingly, it brings into question many other issues that impact everyone, whether or not they own a gun. It compels the question, what else are they lying about?

Keep, I also read teh original story and wondered why there hadn’t been a law suit yet. I’m not a lawyer, but even I recognized that without a set “policy” they were setting themselves up for being sued. What a waste of taxpayer money.

I am waiting for the state to deny a “In Allah We Trust” request after they permit “In God We Trust”.
I requested one of the pasties that says “IN GOD WE TRUST” last time I renewed my tag. My tag now reads “IN DOG WE TRUST”. Probably get me a ticket or a head bashing one day.

Wow, the inauguration really has upset the cons. I really think we should show them a little love, they really are suffering. It’s like they are showing all the stages of Republican grief at one time, anger, depression, pain, anger, and of course more anger.

I am not particularly worried. For one thing, any attempt at armed revolution will be against such modest proposals that true public support won’t be on their side (even worse than the gap between a perceived Romney landslide and the actual Obama victory). Second, even the dumbest among them know this. Only the truly TRULY crazy people will go on shooting sprees, and they will be mass shootings, and random, seemingly not connected to political stuff, and add more fuel to the gun control debate. They whip themselves into a frenzy just to cause the very thing they claim to want to prevent.
