Obama II: What will the next four years hold?

Barack Obama was officially if informally sworn into office for the second time Sunday, but the formal, public ceremony is taking place today, on a bright, cold Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with Obama taking the oath on bibles owned by King and President Abraham Lincoln.
We’ll be live-blogging the rest of the ceremony ….
11:38 — A nicely done, dignified prayer by civil rights leader Myrlie-Evers Williams, a woman who has seen a lot.
11:41: With Sen. Schumer of New York as inaugural planner, it’s understandable that a Brooklyn choir is doing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” But really, a southern choir would have done it righteously.
11:47 Taking his oath, Biden’s just repeating what Sotomayor is saying. Didn’t he get in trouble for that once?
11:51: Obama takes oath, with one small stumble certain to cause comment among a few. The Capitol looks resplendent.
11:58: A call from Obama to the necessity of joint, unified action. “My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it if we seize it together.”
12:03 “Social Security, Medicare … do not make us a nation of takers”
12:04: A call to action on climate change. The first real news of the day, committing to a second-term goal.
12:08: A strong embrace of gay rights, equal respect, immigration reform … a broadening of the American family.
12:10: “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.” I suspect that was directed to some Dems as well as Republicans.
12:12: A relatively brief address by the president, with talk of national unity and purpose interspersed with indirect if sharp reminders of issues that divide us.
12:20: A rather prosaic effort by poet Richard Blanco.
12:31: But a stirring version of the Star Spangled Banner by the lovely and talented Beyonce to close the ceremony.

I don’t know what the next four years will bring, besides grumpy old white guys griping about having to live in an imaginary Soviet socialist republic.
Maybe the nation will become so fed up with their “representatives” that the House gets turned back over, but that’s a serious long shot given the way those districts are drawn. So it’ll probably get uglier before it gets better.
Anyone paying attention to the Senate re-convening? Aren’t they supposed to implement filibuster reform? That’d be something, at least.

Been away for a while, Jay the fact that I and C. West suggest that this day in particular may be an inappropriate day to put on a celebration for another person should at least give you pause to reflect . No, you immediately categorize me and at the same time excoriate West. I’m no way a fan of West and thinks he is a pompous racist…. Jackie, I agree that housing prices were speculated upon, and we both agree, I hope, that housing prices increased in an highly unusual manner (that’s why it was called a bubble), you did not seem to think that the leverage that was occurring was outside the normal, I disagree and while leveraging is important in many ways ,there is little doubt that Lehman in the end was overleveraged, whatever the real reason for it’s investments.Anyway, complicated issue, unfortunately radio infomercials are back:”investing in a house” historically the value of a house has gone up minimally each year and is not a good investment tool, the bubble showed what happens when it is used as one.The debt ceiling will be raised, we need to think beyond it and start to rein in spending:Social Security, Medicare, etc. Don’t just say NO, think how to rein in spending, raising taxes cannot raise enough money !!!!
For those of you who have an interest in learning alittle about Obama’s challenges and what he needs to do and to learn in an objective way, read this weeks Economist (remember this paper supported Obama over Romney)……

We have a president who talks mostly about social issues and not to any great extent about dangerous economic or foreign issues in his 20 minute inaugural speech. It looked like this president viewed today as more of a coronation than an American presidential inauguration. This narcisstic president thinks he has his back to the wind and that the American people love him.

Here’s my question, totally up to you to answer or not.
While raising your children, did you receive a lot of help? Like from friends, family, etc. And not so much physical help as “helpful tips” or “suggestions”? And if so, how did you react to them? Were they welcomed or avoided?
Why do i ask? i have a friend who is a gay parent raising 3 boys that he adopted. well him and his partner. He is white, and the boys are black/biracial (2) and Hispanic (1). I see him trying and i would LOVE to butt in and give him advice; but i am NOT a parent, (step parent IMO is NOT a real parent unless they are actually doing the raising); AND he didn’t ask for my advice.
I see the issues that may arise from him trying to raise the boys — being a minority I can see certain pitfalls that he doesn’t see and probably doesn’t know exist.
I was wondering how to broach the subject sensitively.

I truly believe that LOVING a child is the most important thing; not how the parents look. But raising a child who will face a different challenge then you’ve faced, (whether the child is handicapped, has a mental illness, debilitating disease, etc.); the child will face obstacles that the parent hasn’t and probably will NEVER in his/her lifetime is like a minefield; you have to walk carefully.

We got LOTS of help from many, many sources. We also got a lot of suggestions, etc. How did we react? Oh, pretty much the same way anybody in any circumstances would…considered the source and the nature of the suggestion.
The “race” thingie has to be dealt with, whether or not we want to and it will, at some point, be at issue. I’ve got several friends (some gay and some straight) who have adopted Asian,Latin American or Romany children. There are organizations which are out there to provide support. The main thing is that he and his partner listen to the kids and let them lead the way…
In our own case, as you know, ours is a “mixed marriage.” I had to step back a number of times when Unmentionable would tell me to “quit trying to make them little Indians” or when I had to do the same and tell him to “quit trying to make them little Jews.” The best either of us could do was to give them all the love we had and make sure that if and when they wanted to know something about the heritage, stereotypes and expectations that we could point them the right direction to find out and learn for themselves and relate to it as they saw fit.

Fred — Thanks for that Fred! My family is so “multi-cultural” and diverse that i take a lot of things for granted sometimes. One thing that i take for granted is how they’ve shaped us to look BEYOND the facade that a person shows the world, and to delve a little deeper.
My sister, when she dies her hair blond, could pass for a white lady with a nice tan. I’m dark chocolate and have a brother who looks like he’s from Samoa; so we’ve had to deal with people’s perceptions all of our lives, but we grew up with it so it was just THERE — we learned to ignore the stares and the oglers.
My friend though is still learning. Everytime someone says something hateful when hes with the kids, he immediately goes into the “apology mode” or the “angry mode”. When things like that used to come up with my family, my parents would just laugh. Then they’d say to us, ‘It LIVES….” (a shout out to the movie THEY LIVE where a bunch of aliens invaded humans bodies — they used to tell us that a bunch of idiots have invaded bodies of normally sane people).
Thanks. I’m going to talk to him– as a friend. and try to help him through this minefield called life with kids who look NOTHING like you!
BTW — When Dudley and I are out with my niece, who is also biracial, we get comments like, “Your daughter is soooo beautiful, etc.” BUT when we are by ourselves with her, I get evil looks from black men, and sly looks from black women. HE gets black women (probably ugly ones), giving him their number and evil looks from white women.

Hypersensitivity to how others react to the racial aspect. I think they should explain, maybe once or twice, then let it go. That’s basically how my family handled the situation.
Heck, when I was little, (and some people say i was bad….lies, but i felt the need to mention it here), and i was with my aunt, Mei Ing, (Vietnamese), I hid from her in the department store. When she finally found me, she was mad and smacked my behind. This black lady in the store wanted to fight her because she didn’t believe my aunt when she said that i was her niece. The store manager called the police, they were going to arrest my aunt and everything. My aunt was flustered and couldn’t remember her english and kept speaking in Vietnamese and just made the whole situation that much worse.
Well, to make a long story short, growing up with my aunt, i know Vietnamese, can’t read it, but can speak it; anywhoo when i started translating for my aunt, everyone realized that she really WAS my aunt, and not some crazy woman that went around hitting black kids and trying to kidnap them.
When we got to the car she cried. When we got home, she whipped my azz. THEN she sat down talked to me about what I’d done wrong and gave me a hug. Later on when she told my parents, they whipped my azz again. BUT afterwards, every one LAUGHED about it.
And now we have the joke, when we take the kids to the mall or something about them not doing a “Leigh”; or they’ll get a “LA Beat down”. (Leigh Azz Whipping).
Anyway, that’s some of the things my friend MAY face — and i want to warn him about it and try to get him to prepare himself and the boys for it.

That was a funny story on your aunt. I had a similar one. I took a couple of my little latino kids to Micky D’s to celebrate one of their achievements. We were sitting there just being us when a policeman came over wanting to know who I was and what I was doing with the boys. They were a bit surprised, and him being an authority of the state and they being undocumented, they were nervous. I laughed and took out the “permission slip” from their parents stating that I was their teacher and should there be any questions…
It turned out that a bystander had called him in to check out a “suspicious” situation. He was apologetic, “I hope you understand…” Well, I guess I could’ve gotten an attitude, but he was just doing his job and, well, I DID understand…that’s why I had the permission slips to begin with…and were I the one “looking in?” The thought would certainly have crossed my mind. I would have tuned in more closely to what was going on, but that white man with two latino boys?

Jay, I see the American people increasingly holding the reins of their democracy like was intended by the Founders. I mean, once they fully realize that this is the only way to both fix Washington and keep their government on the straight-and-narrow, they will be on it ad infinitum, not just at election time.
