Obama II: What will the next four years hold?

The National Mall at sunrise, photo courtesy of blog poster Brosephus

The National Mall at sunrise, photo courtesy of blog poster Brosephus

Barack Obama was officially if informally sworn into office for the second time Sunday, but the formal, public ceremony is taking place today, on a bright, cold Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with Obama taking the oath on bibles owned by King and President Abraham Lincoln.

We’ll be live-blogging the rest of the ceremony ….

11:38 — A nicely done, dignified prayer by civil rights leader Myrlie-Evers Williams, a woman who has seen a lot.

11:41: With Sen. Schumer of New York as inaugural planner, it’s understandable that a Brooklyn choir is doing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” But really, a southern choir would have done it righteously.

11:47 Taking his oath, Biden’s just repeating what Sotomayor is saying. Didn’t he get in trouble for that once?

11:51: Obama takes oath, with one small stumble certain to cause comment among a few. The Capitol looks resplendent.

11:58: A call from Obama to the necessity of joint, unified action. “My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it if we seize it together.”

12:03 “Social Security, Medicare … do not make us a nation of takers”

12:04: A call to action on climate change. The first real news of the day, committing to a second-term goal.

12:08: A strong embrace of gay rights, equal respect, immigration reform … a broadening of the American family.

12:10: “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.” I suspect that was directed to some Dems as well as Republicans.

12:12: A relatively brief address by the president, with talk of national unity and purpose interspersed with indirect if sharp reminders of issues that divide us.

12:20: A rather prosaic effort by poet Richard Blanco.

12:31: But a stirring version of the Star Spangled Banner by the lovely and talented Beyonce to close the ceremony.

We know you come a long way, Obama
But you don’t need a heart of stone, no
You proved that you could do it
You could not make it on your own

But you can’t keep runnin’ away from CONS
‘Cause the CONS let you down, no, no, no
And though others try to satisfy you,

Yeah, Alex, it is DEEPLY inappropriate to hold the inauguration of our one and only black president on MLK Day (major sarc. alert).

I’m sure black Americans across the country must be outraged.

Out of respect for the Christian sabbath. As far as it being MLK Day, I’ve no real objection there. Maybe it he’d done it the first go round, but this time? Somehow it’s fitting, a routine inauguration of a mediocre man of color as POTUS. And, no, I’m not being snarky. This should be the first of many to come as the Black American takes his/her rightful place in our society and political landscape. No big deal. If Obama’s first term said nothing else, it showed us that Black folks are going to produce the same mixed bag of good and bad as any other group. And that’s a good thing.

Well. true enough. But sadly, it also has the effect of bringing into view another, less happy disjunction. as Cornell West has said.

>“All of the blood, sweat and tears that went into producing a Martin Luther King, Jr. generated a brother of such high decency and dignity that you don’t use his prophetic fire for a moment of presidential pageantry without understanding the challenge he represents to all of those in power regardless of what color they are.

Obama could have really been pompous and had it on Tuesday. That would have given federal workers a 4 day weekend once you add the MLK holiday today and a Tuesday inauguration. I’m sure his ego could have handled a 4 day weekend that was all about him.

West is not qualified to decide such matters. John Lewis, who knew King and worked with King and shed blood with him, was deeply touched by the use of Dr. King’s Bible. So was Andrew Young. I am aware of no member of the King family or King associates who raised any objection whatsoever to the use of Dr. King’s Bible in the inauguration; they and only they would have the credibility to render such judgments.

“Just checking back in since its the start of the 2nd term. So has he completely bankrupted us yet?”

Interesting comment. Who is “he”?

The last time I checked, a couple of hours ago, Congress approves every nickle the President spends. The last time I checked Congress authorizes every nickle of revenue the President receives. And Congress passed a law that the President MUST spend every nickle Congress says he can spend. And Congress passed a law that says if spending is greater than revenue the President must borrow the necessary money to pay the bills if cash is short.

So, again, who is he?

The basic question has a lot of merit. But it should more properly be a question of “Have they bankrupted us yet?” And “they” is Congress. And the answer is a resounding yes.

The 112th Congress had two straight $1 trillion deficits. The last time I checked , November 7, 2012, the vast majority of them were re-elected.

And so it goes…………………..

The more things change the more they remain the same.
