Barack Obama was officially if informally sworn into office for the second time Sunday, but the formal, public ceremony is taking place today, on a bright, cold Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with Obama taking the oath on bibles owned by King and President Abraham Lincoln.
We’ll be live-blogging the rest of the ceremony ….
11:38 — A nicely done, dignified prayer by civil rights leader Myrlie-Evers Williams, a woman who has seen a lot.
11:41: With Sen. Schumer of New York as inaugural planner, it’s understandable that a Brooklyn choir is doing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” But really, a southern choir would have done it righteously.
11:47 Taking his oath, Biden’s just repeating what Sotomayor is saying. Didn’t he get in trouble for that once?
11:51: Obama takes oath, with one small stumble certain to cause comment among a few. The Capitol looks resplendent.
11:58: A call from Obama to the necessity of joint, unified action. “My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it if we seize it together.”
12:03 “Social Security, Medicare … do not make us a nation of takers”
12:04: A call to action on climate change. The first real news of the day, committing to a second-term goal.
12:08: A strong embrace of gay rights, equal respect, immigration reform … a broadening of the American family.
12:10: “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle.” I suspect that was directed to some Dems as well as Republicans.
12:12: A relatively brief address by the president, with talk of national unity and purpose interspersed with indirect if sharp reminders of issues that divide us.
12:20: A rather prosaic effort by poet Richard Blanco.
12:31: But a stirring version of the Star Spangled Banner by the lovely and talented Beyonce to close the ceremony.

CONfused aren’t we? It was President GW Bush that handed this President the greatest Recession since the Great Depression. This President got us out of it. BTW, the Great Recession officially began in December 2007 and officially ended in 2010. Who was President in 2007 and in 2010?
The mantle for the worst President in US history has already been taken. GW didn’t even have the grace to show up for this inauguration.

That is just so pitiful, “uncomfortable.”
Just downright pitiful. From the speech:
” … while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth.
“… a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American, she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.”
“My fellow Americans, the oath I have sworn before you today, like the one recited by others who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to God and country….”
“And we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the victims of prejudice – not out of mere charity, but because peace in our time requires the constant advance of those principles that our common creed describes: tolerance and opportunity; human dignity and justice.”
“… That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.”

The difference between this inaugural address and the last one is that Obama now has a history in office. The next four years will be more of the same:
-consistently high unemployment/underemployment- particularly for recent graduates and minorities.
- wages for the people who are employed will continue to go down as regulatory costs are passed on to employees.
- welfare roles will dramatically expand as the emergency safety net becomes standard operating procedure rather than a temporary measure
- taxes will continue to increase for the middle class as Obama has to pay for the entitlement programs
- the tax code will get even more complex as new taxes are created (and their corollary tax credits). A carbon tax will start in the name of global warming. Of course the institutions most affected by this tax have already purchased carbon tax credits making the new taxes passed on to the consumer.
- the spread between the haves and have nots will continue to widen because the wealthy have access to advice to circumvent increased taxes in a lobbyist designed tax code.
-The American dream of homeownership will continue to be less accesible for 1st time homeowners because of tighter credit criteria and larger down payments required by Dodd-Frank.
- There will be no grand bargain of consequence because Obama does not have the ability to unify a bipartisan coalition even on issues both parties agree on.
- there will continue to be administration scandals particularly involving alternative energy projects and the NLRB.
- right to work states with low tax burdens will continue to outperform.
- terrorists will continue to threaten world peace because they perceive Obama to represent the end of Pax Americana.
- After the platitudes of today’s speach, the SOTU address will go back to name calling and accusations because that’s how Obama rolls (remember Obama blasting the supreme court).
Like it or not, that’s Obama’s history for the past four years- take credit for other people’s successes and blame others for any and all failures.

Our continued emperialistic modus operandi has more opportunity to expand over the next 4 years and since every president can’t resist using our overpriced defense capabilities, he will continue to send drones killing innocents in the process and further fueling the fans of USA hatred…

The farce in Washington reminds real Americans of what it felt like to be French in 1940 watching the German troops goose step through the streets of Paris. The former United States has devolved into a kakistocracy under the epic mismanagement of those two worthless fools The Indonesian Imbecile and The Delaware Dummy. The outlook for 2013 is the usual bleak doom featuring high unemployment, stagnant economic growth, out of control spending, loss of personal rights as the vile tyrants in charge shred The Constitution. The only glimmer of hope is in 2014 when zerøØcare is shoved down our throats by the tyrannical Kenyan Nincompoop which will totally destroy our healthcare system and economy leading to riots and, hopefully, armed revolution. There is no other hope.

Regnad,
I haven’t seen any empirical data connecting poverty with obesity AND ugliness. But my anecdotal observations do tend to show a correlation between being poor, ugly, and fat.

Oscar, I agree COMPLETELY that they were bad loans. Do you not understand that we were practically BEGGED by Fannie Mae to sign them?!? My company sold those loans IMMEDIATELY because we KNEW they were bad. If my company had to assume the risk, instead of the federal government, the loans would never have been made.
I don’t understand why this concept is so difficult to grasp.
And it is worth mentioning again that the same bed wetters who cry “Greed!” now are the same people who INSISTED that we “help” less qualified applicants attain home ownership in 2005.
You reap what you sow.

You narrative, unfortunately, fits many, many Americans who have worked hard, played by the rules and hoped to have a comfortable retirement with dignity.
I can not see any policy that has been advocated by, or, proposed by President Obama that has been a catalyst for any of the items that has caused you concern.
Hang in and continue to be optimistic.

My god Jay, cry me a river. The guy gives good speech but he certainly didn’t say anything that hasn’t been said by any before him albeit in different ways.
The little girl in poverty has a 1 in 10,000 chance at best (just guessing of course) of rising and dreaming at lofty heights primarily due to enablers disguised as entitlements…a culture that offers incentives only toward maintenance of the status quo..
I imagine many folks are touching themselves to this particular speech of course the other side did the same when it was Bush. Nothing changes except seasons..

The Obama administration indeed proves that we are a fullblown kakistocracy. Give the Livlibs a moment to look that one up.

Fyi, oscar… fannie mae had a specific set of loan underwriting rules that we abided by. We played by THEIR rules, not our own.

Danny X I got a feeling they will have Clint Eastwood on that no fly zone too. I would love to be a fly on the wall when the wing nuts gather to decide who gets air time for their conventions. It is probably the only honest conversation they have every four years and still Newt and Marianne still got by the filter to do their Dale and Roy routine.
The GOP says they need to get their message out, not a new one the same one that lost the last two elections, to the ones that haven’t understood them. Nothing says family values like trotting out your 3G wife or is that 4G I can’t even remember now.

Until you wrote that, I had a better opinion of you. How do you know what terrorists think?
And President Obama is not putting our troops in danger by using drones. The terrorists we are after are such cowards that they hide among the “innocent”. Yes, lives are lost and will continue to be lost until the population sends them on their way. Try to find “The Ugly American”

Written back in ‘58, but it tells a good story and gives you an idea just how long America has been disliked.
Get over it and lend a hand to help our people like Middle get a job, or get out of the way.

Most folks have a tendency to overlook the devastating impact of the rating agencies who didn’t take time to carefully get into these “packages” and perform diligence above the criminally negligent that was the case.
Dodd Frank only keeps the too big to fail protected by taxpayers safetynet…(hey…kinda like our government…) and no one wants to own that..just like the rating agencies don’t have to own up to the AAA ratings of those trash bags of loans…

Kcin, I would expect that most of that “evidence” being touted to you is from his experience looking in the mirror. As many but the very simple minded know, most of the “cheapest food” available to the poor often is the most unhealthy. And there are a number of causes of obesity, including chemicals used by manufacturers. But when you’re entire life is distorted by pompous assenisity, its easy to post absurd claims about poor people.
