Guns, hot sauce and testosterone a spicy mix

In 2006, researchers at Knox College in Illinois performed a study on college men ages 18 to 22. Here’s how the study abstract reads:

“We tested whether interacting with a gun increased testosterone levels and later aggressive behavior. Thirty male college students provided a saliva sample (for testosterone assay), interacted with either a gun or a children’s toy for 15 min, and then provided another saliva sample. Next, subjects added as much hot sauce as they wanted to a cup of water they believed another subject would have to drink. Males who interacted with the gun showed significantly greater increases in testosterone and added more hot sauce to the water than did those who interacted with the children’s toy.”

The men were told that they were being studied to determine whether paying close attention to a task altered their later sensitivity to taste. They were tested for initial testosterone levels, and half were then asked to dismantle and reassemble the old “Mousetrap” game, writing a set of instructions on how to do so.

Desert Eagle handgun

Desert Eagle handgun

The other half were asked to do the same with a pellet pistol, an exact replica in size and weight of a Desert Eagle handgun. Finally, after being tested again for testosterone, they were given a glass of water and bottle of hot sauce and asked to prepare a “sample” for the next study subject.

According to a description of the study at WebMD:

This hot-sauce trick has been used before. The more aggressive a man is feeling, the more hot sauce he tends to put in the next guy’s drink.

Sure enough, testosterone went up about 100 times more in the men who handled the gun than in the men who handled the children’s toy. And the gun handlers put three times more hot sauce in the water — on average, about a half ounce — than the toy handlers.

The more a man’s testosterone went up after gun handling, the more hot sauce he put in the water.

And since a story like this just wouldn’t be the same without a chart:

Interesting information, Jay. It certainly could explain the almost primal reaction some folks have to the thought of fewer guns to fondle. I wonder if the testosterone levels would have been even higher had the subjects been asked to suck on the guns instead of just handle them. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

My theory isn’t that gun lovers want to kill people or it makes them feel more manly…just that knowing that you have the power to kill someone with the pull of a trigger makes people feel powerful…even if its the only power they have. That’s why some are so passionate about them. Someone may be completely emasculated by society but if they have a gun, they have power.

So what Jay seems to be implying is that the black on black shootings (which constitute the majority of gun related violence in this country) is because the black males stroke their guns. Sorry to tell you this Jay but there is something way more fundamental at work here than that. “Stroking” a gun doesn’t make a killer. And Obama basically stated that watching Django or any other of the violent films that we are bombarded with doesn’t contribute either. At least that is what he pretty much said in his speech yesterday since he only mentioned Hollywood’s influence as something to be “studied” by the CDC, of all agencies. Yea, that is going to help. Like the CDC is going to make a big contribution to this argument with everything else they have on their plate.

And Indigo, when the term “gun nuts” comes to your liberal mind you think of nothing but a bunch of white males wearing NRA baseball caps who are chewing tobacco, don’t you? I hate to tell you, the real “gun nuts” who are doing the the real killing are not these stereotypical people you libs like to think about. Oh no. They are the inter-city minorities that are doing the real damage and most of the time the violence is inflicted upon people of their own race. And, they use mostly illegal firearms that were never purchased in compliance with our already strict gun laws. Liberal policies have contributed greatly to the violent culture we now find ourselves in. The judicial system is a joke. Rehabilitation is laughed at by career felons but they are more than willing to use it to get the freedom to reek more havoc. The prison system is overloaded and law enforcement itself is falling apart because why arrest people when they will be back on the streets in a short amount of time?

Elin is said to be considering the proposal from Tiger, but she reportedly wants a $350 million anti-cheating clause added to the contract. The proposed deal reportedly is worth over half of Tiger’s estimated $600 million fortune.

Don’t tell anyone, but “wasabi” is just horseradish with green food coloring. There is so little REAL wasabi that very little of it makes it’s way out of Japan, the rest is just fake, horseradish.

(from wiki): Wasabi is difficult to cultivate (see below), and that makes it quite expensive. Due to its high cost, a common substitute is a mixture of horseradish, mustard, starch and green food coloring. Outside of Japan, it is rare to find real wasabi plants. Often packages are labeled as wasabi, but the ingredients do not actually include wasabi plant. Although the taste is similar between wasabi and horseradish, they are easily distinguished. In Japan, horseradish is referred to as seiyō wasabi (西洋わさび?, “western wasabi”).[7] In the United States, true wasabi is generally found only at specialty grocers and high-end restaurants.

Speaking of testosterone, anybody following this bizarre story about star Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o?

“According to media accounts that surrounded Te’o this season, his purported girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died of leukemia in September. But on Wednesday, the website Deadspin.com posted a lengthy story saying there was no evidence that she ever existed.”

This guy was runner-up for the Heisman trophy, something I know a lot about. I’ve done some probing, and here’s the real story, according to a confidential source.

Te’o is a squish (not that there’s anything wrong with that). He grew weary of his teammates asking him why he didn’t ever avail himself of all the sorority sisters, cheerleaders, and campus hotties lined up at his door wanting to boink.

So he made up a story about a pretend female friend so he and Brucie could stay on the down-low.

I watch channel 2, 5, and 11 news almost everyday and when they show a gun crime and the suspect, it’s usually not middle class white guys from the burbs. Just being honest about what I see.
We have some very serious inner city crime problems we need to address, but it seems we are too scared to mention it, lest we be labeled racist. Come on folks, the real gun problem is in the black community. And we all know it.

its pretty funny seeing anti-gun fanatics making up silly stories about gunowners trying to compensate for some penile shortcoming when the largest market for guns these days are women. Do they really believe that a woman arming herself because she is being stalked, or is home alone like the recent case, that she is trying to compensate for a lack of some sexual inadequacy. Using stats from the Brady Campaign (not even close to non-partisan)

Murders/deaths/suicide/accident/etc by gun TOTAL = 31,593
(includes a SIGNIFICANT number of people who shot themselves) non-partisan stats show the number nearer 10,500
Survivors = wounded by gun TOTAL= 66,769

Includes those deliberately shot by police

Number of deaths by automobile in 2009 total = 35,900
Number of people PERMANENTLY injured in car collisions in 2009 =2,219,000 (that’s 2 MILLION!)
Federal stats available by google-ing

Seems like we have a worse automobile problem than a gun problem. Maybe we need to be restricting the size of car’s gas tanks and putting a governor on EVERY car???

Really guys, get some perspective. The problem is we’re bringing a gun to a mental-health and crime fight.

For a two member family, we have 6 firearms and the rounds go where I aim them. I would dearly love to take my wife to downtown Atlanta to see the Fox and the small theaters and restaurants and stay till the wee hours, but the only way I would even consider going down there is armed to the teeth, and I’m not willing to do that. It’s not safe down there, and i have no interest in putting myself into a dangerous situation when I can stay home and watch HBO safely, and that’s the REAL crime here!

1) People wouldn’t go armed to the teeth if they felt safe, but everyone knows the judicial branch has put a revolving door on the jail for violent criminals and threw away the key for drug users. The cops can’t protect the average citizen.
Until this gets fixed people will continue to buy guns.

Doesn’t bother me either. If any given individual’s paranoia is driving them to purchase weapons at a higher price because they think it will be banned that is their choice.

If someone is running out to purchase “firearms” that could be listed as an “assault” weapon, I could actually see that logic, even though I doubt they will be banned.

If one is rushing to the store to purchase hand guns because they think they are about to be banned, their choice, but they are willfully ignorant of the facts. And yes the marketing campaign by the NRA is working as planned.

Bullcrap. The buying frenzy started in 2008 and only left the conscious mind because of other media driven stories like the debt limit crap, healthcare crap, and other stuff since then. There was no “gun” agenda in 2008, and they were selling out just as much then as they are now. The NRA drives the sales to feed their industry sponsors. Ain’t nobody taking no guns, banning any guns, or doing much of anything else about legislation. Congress can’t even do simple disaster relief legislation so how in the hell are they going to pass something as sweeping as gun legislation?

From Businessinsider.com:

“In its early days, the National Rifle Association was a grassroots social club that prided itself on independence from corporate influence.

While that is still part of the organization’s core function, today less than half of the NRA’s revenues come from program fees and membership dues.

The bulk of the group’s money now comes in the form of contributions, grants, royalty income, and advertising, much of it originating from gun industry sources.

Since 2005, the gun industry and its corporate allies have given between $20 million and $52.6 million to it through the NRA Ring of Freedom sponsor program. Donors include firearm companies like Midway USA, Springfield Armory Inc, Pierce Bullet Seal Target Systems, and Beretta USA Corporation. Other supporters from the gun industry include Cabala’s, Sturm Rugar & Co, and Smith & Wesson.

The NRA also made $20.9 million — about 10 percent of its revenue — from selling advertising to industry companies marketing products in its many publications in 2010, according to the IRS Form 990.

Additionally, some companies donate portions of sales directly to the NRA. Crimson Trace, which makes laser sights, donates 10 percent of each sale to the NRA. Taurus buys an NRA membership for everyone who buys one of their guns. Sturm Rugar gives $1 to the NRA for each gun sold, which amounts to millions. The NRA’s revenues are intrinsically linked to the success of the gun business.

The NRA Foundation also collects hundreds of thousands of dollars from the industry, which it then gives to local-level organizations for training and equipment purchases.

It appears many of the bloggers here want to pick a fight. Just thinking about guns and they think they are men. In the 21st century men will have to take responsibiliy for their actions, including their anonymous words. The name calling and immaturity here is a good indication of why guns in their hands are dangerous. They forget where they are and have to be arrested at the airport. They fail to lock them up and their kids accidentally kill themselves or take the Bushmaster down to the local school and shoot it up. Every gun in the U.S. was initially in the hands of a person stated to be responsible and, when it is used in a crime – that responsible person is responsible. Get over it. Grow up. Saying that the NRA is a far right group is total BS.

http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/fact-sheets/2013/tenreasons.aspx

Introduction: In the late 1980s, gun control groups realized that they had failed in their original goal—getting handguns banned1—and began campaigning against semi-automatic firearms they called “assault weapons,” most of which are rifles. As an anti-gun activist group put it:

[A]ssault weapons [will] strengthen the handgun restriction lobby for the following reasons: It will be a new topic in what has become to the press and public an “old” debate. . . . [H]andgun restriction consistently remains a non-issue with the vast majority of legislators, the press, and public. . . . Efforts to restrict assault weapons are more likely to succeed than those to restrict handguns. . . . Although the opportunity to restrict assault weapons exists, a question remains for the handgun restriction movement: How?”2

Gun control supporters demanding a ban on “assault weapons” have also demanded a ban on ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, most of which are designed for self-defense handguns. These gun and magazine bans should be rejected because:

Yep, that sounds like some liberal mumbo jumbo there.

“WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association stepped up its anti-Obama rhetoric on Thursday, declaring in a fundraising email that President Barack Obama had allegedly “pledged to raise $20 million to ram his gun ban agenda through Congress.”

The claim was part of a fiery appeal by NRA chief lobbyist Chris Cox sent to the group’s approximately 4 million members. Cox wrote that Obama and “anti-gun politicians are on an all-out crusade” to “ban your guns and abolish every last sacred right you have under the Second Amendment … until they reduce your freedom to ashes.”

According to Cox, Obama’s “rich, gun-hating friends in Hollywood, along with anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg, will shower him with the money he needs to strip you of your gun rights.”

“The Ford Fusion Energi, the automaker’s second production plug-in hybrid after the Ford C-Max Energi, officially boasts a range of 620 miles between fuel stops when calculated with EPA-rated figures (108 miles per gallon equivalent in the city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined). Of that distance, the sedan is capable of running 21 miles in electric-only mode.

To eliminate confusion for those who are numerically challenged, Ford’s press release defines the range in more real-world terms, mentioning that its “Fusion Energi can travel from Boston to Virginia Beach on one tank of gas and one full charge or traverse the West Coast’s scenic Highway 101 from Sacramento to San Diego.” That’s impressive, especially since we don’t know of many passengers who can handle ten hours in the seat without a pit stop.”

Why in the h3ll would a group donate to anyone that does not believe in their cause? The far left loonies have an agenda to get rid of all citizens having guns, look at Chicago and NY for examples of the overall plans. The NRA donates to people of like mind and it does not matter the party. If they are donating to Democrats then they can not be considered “far right” because a far right organization would not donate any money to a Democrat.

Republicans totally control 24 states and control at least one house in 6 other states. They should continue the work of governors like Walker in Wisconsin. Balance the budget and crush the government employees unions. I really hope they go for the congressional district in the electoral college in MI, WI, OH and PA. WRONG!!! Just because a person has a (D) behind their name, that doesn’t automatically mean they are liberal. See, you conservatives are so hellbent on party purity that you forget that both parties used to have somewhat equal mixes of liberal and conservative members. Since y’all started the whole “I’m more conservative than you” meme, your membership is shrinking and so is your national election vote totals.

So, the NRA supports conservative Democrats, who cares? Still doesn’t change the fact that they’re far enough to the right that they wouldn’t know what moderate was if someone spelled it out on their home office windows for them, even with that spelling including Braille.

Man, the revelation that our country has actually moved left of the last 40 years really upset you last night didn’t it? Shouldn’t you be happy about that? Or is it just too upsetting for the narrative you’ve crafted to make you feel good about yourself?

Read Steven Pinker’s “Better Angels of Our Nature” sometime if you can pry yourself away from belittling everyone else and espousing homicidal fantasies against those you disagree with on this page.

I’ll ask you again: how, exactly, are we currently to the right of a society 40 years ago that seriously debated – on both sides – the positives and negatives of letting black and white people go to the same schools and drink from the same water fountains???

Get over it. We’re moving – ever so slowly – to the left. It shouldn’t get your panties all wadded up to admit that. You should be happy.

What’s really troubling is that we’re seeing the last bits of what might be thought of as handshake agreements the opposing sides used to have. You never know when the next shoe’s gonna drop. Wed., it was the notion that a President’s kids were off limits for attacks. The past few years, it’s the notion that you don’t just routinely filibuster a nominee because you don’t like the nominee’s boss. and so forth.

and now, it’s the notion that, as sucky as our winner-take-all electoral college is vs. a simple popular vote election, it’s certainly better than making the thing subject to district gerrymandering. But hey, like you said, when you’ve lost the majority and need to cling to power somehow, you start getting desperate.

Who knows what the next shoe to drop will be.

To me this explains a lot. Armstrong was said to be a bully and he soaked this stuff in like it was water and he lived on a desert.

School yard bullies are a problem pushed under the rug in most of America. There should be some attention placed on this area. If a kid makes an F in school that grade follows him for quit a while, yet he and every once in a while she, can be a holly terror in behavior and little if anything is done as long as the grades stay in tack. If they don’t he or she is just kicked out of school to be someone else’s problem.

Now you take that kid and encourage him with the NRA propaganda that life should be lived aggressively. You have two types, one who finds heaven on earth scaring people with his macho behavior and the other a suppressed superiorly intelligent but physically inferior being who ultimately says if you are going to allow this kind of behavior then I am going to play by your rules, or the rules he perceives are getting the green light. The problem is obvious, the solution is there, but no one wants to do the work it will take to clean up the mess, and some do not want it cleaned up.

I dunno, think I saw something where he was reduced to claiming that his fists were registered as a legal weapon…

Speaking of That Guy, I want to replay something from around the time of the Newtown massacre. I had just stumbled upon the first news coverage that afternoon, and posted this, utterly ignorant of the depth of what had happened, beyond the “shots were fired” reports–I simply saw a picture of some scared children being told to line up and walk to some destination:

First story I clicked on, had a painful picture, but maybe we all ought to force ourselves to look:

And here was Doom’s reply:

Why should we all force ourselves to look at this tragedy? Cause you think its good for us and have deemed it necessary? Or is it because you want to use this tragedy to make some kind of political point- possibly about guns?

This isn’t evidence of the guy being the Worst Person in the World; it’s not even all that offensive. But–the defensiveness is just palpable, isn’t it? We knew nothing about the specifics of the attack, and yet he’s already accused me of exploitation.

by the way, it wasn’t actually a “picture,” so much as a still/thumbnail from a video. Which, for the record, I never actually clicked on, because it was too painful to even look at the fuzzy still of that video. I just had a look at the link, it’s still there, if anyone wants to see what caught my attention, here.

Level headed people are misunderstood in this country. Even the press has gotten to the point of correcting even tempered individuals as emotionally unattached. What we have is a lot of people taking lessons on how to have a personality. Use your hands more, look the interviewer in the eye, don’t say the N word, be slick. From our art to our social channels there is no originality in this country any more, people are scared to have a sense of humor or show their real selves, someone may disapprove. I even feel Obama slipping away to the pain of fighting the world of superficial is too great, the gains too little, being a robot too easy. The “evolutionary neuroandrogenic theory” focuses on the hormone testosterone as a factor influencing aggression and criminality and being evolutionary beneficial during certain forms of competition. In most species, males are more aggressive than females. Castration of males usually has a pacifying effect on their aggressive behavior. In humans, males engage in crime and especially violent crime more than females. The involvement in crime usually rises in the early teens to mid teens which happen at the same time as testosterone levels rise. Research on the relationship between testosterone and aggression is difficult since the only reliable measurement of brain testosterone is by a lumbar puncture which is not done for research purposes. Studies therefore have often instead used more unreliable measurements from blood or saliva. Most studies support a link between adult criminality and testosterone although the relationship is modest if examined separately for each sex. Nearly all studies of juvenile delinquency and testosterone are not significant. Most studies have also found testosterone to be associated with behaviors or personality traits linked with criminality such as antisocial behavior and alcoholism. Many studies have also been done on the relationship between more general aggressive behavior/feelings and testosterone. About half the studies have found a relationship and about half no relationship.

Testosterone Does Not Induce Aggression, Study Shows
Dec. 9, 2009 — New scientific evidence refutes the preconception that testosterone causes aggressive, egocentric, and risky behavior. A study at the Universities of Zurich and Royal Holloway London with more than 120 experimental subjects has shown that the sexual hormone with the poor reputation can encourage fair behaviors if this serves to ensure one’s own status.

Once again there is a complete absence of critical thinking. It is assumed at the outset that testosterone is bad. Is that fact? It also doesn’t include any context to the activity. Were the subjects competing? Competing and establishing dominance also increases testosterone, What toys were they playing with? Was it the activity that increased the testosterone or the object.

How do you tell a liberal, They are the ones that leap to an emotional response based on a superficial analysis of incomplete data.

As for the Newtown tragedy I think it sucks and is a terrible tragedy just like everyone else does. The difference is that I can still look at the situation objectively and rationally and not let my emotions get in the way of critical thinking skills about what if anything can be done. Liberals seem to lack that ability. And btw tragedies happen all the time and they happen to children. One sensationalized tragedy doesn’t require that we throw all reason and rationale out the window concerning the gun debate. Everyday kids get snatched, raped, murdered, abused, etc. somewhere in the U.S. and in the world in general. There is constantly evil and tragedy in the world.

I can’t figure out if liberals in general are just too stupid to realize this or if they do realize this and in a sick manner have no problem with taking isolated tragedies involving children and using them for political purposes. Which is it ma’am?

Well it seems like some of the libs are up to their usual lies. I never threatened to beat up the blog. What happened was Soothsayer said was that we should stage a cage match with me and another con against keep up and kam. I played along and said I’m game for that. And that I wouldn’t need headgear or a partner- which I wouldn’t. If you have a problem with that you should take it up with the person who suggested all that- sooth.

Furthermore if you have a problem with people making threats then perhaps you should take it up with Adam. The young man lost his cool one night and in a threatening manner demanded my address with the suggestion that he was going to come up here and do something. I let him off the hook though. Young men full of bravado make all kinds of mistakes and asking for a physical confrontation with the Doom is about as big a mistake as he could make. Its all cool though. Doomy aint out to hurt the boy. Or a little girl like you for that matter.

“In the middle” the assumptions in this blog are 180 degrees different than the mass’s assumption that aggressive behavior is model behavior. Heroes seldom are academic; they are Rambo or John Wayne. The movie always has one Duke and the rest of the world is shorter, by casting, dumber, which really dumbs down the cast, clear right and wrong themes. In the real world there are many, many people who think they are the Duke, and the gun makes up for the shortness. If Wayne has acted in this world like he acted in the movies one of them would have just walked up behind him and popped his with a bullet, end of subject. Aggressive behavior is a short term solution, it takes character to come up with the real solution which this country is a little short on lately.

I can’t believe after the horrific Newtown tragedy that there are still those who fall on the “status quo” side of the gun control debate. We can’t just do nothing.

So what law would have prevented the young man from taking his mother’s legally owned guns and shooting her and going on a rampage? And since I didn’t get an answer from any of the libs the other day on the proposed new gun law I’ll ask it again and see if any of them can answer it. If the new proposed law were in effect before Newtown please explain to me how that law would have prevented the Newtown massacre? Any lib care to take a stab at that one??? Buehler???

Thulsa Doom what do you think is different from the south and the rest of the country? We got a lot of mucho down here, like the banditos in Mexico, and both places are in fact economically depressed. Nothing to do with pop psychology, there is a reality.

Have you ever noticed the deeper south you get the poorer the educational institutions. Virginia has UVA and W&L, North Carolina has Duke and UNC, South Carolina has Furman and as we drip further south we get dryer and dryer on schools. Atlanta does have Emory, but check out the student body, mostly northern kids that couldn’t get into a good school up there so they came down here where the competition is easier.

But Thulsa we have football! Can’t buy a poor kid a good lunch but we spend billions on something that I couldn’t even tell you who won the championship five years later. You ever follow up on these football heroes? Then follow up on someone who has had a good education which doesn’t exist down south. Which one you think last longer the football or the education? Makes you wonder where our priorities are doesn’t it. No pop in any of this just sad truth.
