Guns, hot sauce and testosterone a spicy mix

In 2006, researchers at Knox College in Illinois performed a study on college men ages 18 to 22. Here’s how the study abstract reads:

“We tested whether interacting with a gun increased testosterone levels and later aggressive behavior. Thirty male college students provided a saliva sample (for testosterone assay), interacted with either a gun or a children’s toy for 15 min, and then provided another saliva sample. Next, subjects added as much hot sauce as they wanted to a cup of water they believed another subject would have to drink. Males who interacted with the gun showed significantly greater increases in testosterone and added more hot sauce to the water than did those who interacted with the children’s toy.”

The men were told that they were being studied to determine whether paying close attention to a task altered their later sensitivity to taste. They were tested for initial testosterone levels, and half were then asked to dismantle and reassemble the old “Mousetrap” game, writing a set of instructions on how to do so.

Desert Eagle handgun

Desert Eagle handgun

The other half were asked to do the same with a pellet pistol, an exact replica in size and weight of a Desert Eagle handgun. Finally, after being tested again for testosterone, they were given a glass of water and bottle of hot sauce and asked to prepare a “sample” for the next study subject.

According to a description of the study at WebMD:

This hot-sauce trick has been used before. The more aggressive a man is feeling, the more hot sauce he tends to put in the next guy’s drink.

Sure enough, testosterone went up about 100 times more in the men who handled the gun than in the men who handled the children’s toy. And the gun handlers put three times more hot sauce in the water — on average, about a half ounce — than the toy handlers.

The more a man’s testosterone went up after gun handling, the more hot sauce he put in the water.

And since a story like this just wouldn’t be the same without a chart:

Make of it what you will. I report; you decide. But as we’ve seen, the good people at Bushmaster have already made their decision:

American men have become fat, weak and completely out of shape… They can’t defend themselves in a fight without weapons… The neo-con gun nuts “believe” that they need an AR-15 with a 100 round ammo drum attached to it, so they can defend themselves… The big scary gun has become a phallic symbol for some men who lack confidence in themselves…

When your ideology sucks and voters know it, you try to change the rules to narrow the votes to your likening. And think of all the conservatives who accuse Dems of election tampering…

What’s really troubling is that we’re seeing the last bits of what might be thought of as handshake agreements the opposing sides used to have. You never know when the next shoe’s gonna drop. Wed., it was the notion that a President’s kids were off limits for attacks. The past few years, it’s the notion that you don’t just routinely filibuster a nominee because you don’t like the nominee’s boss. and so forth.

and now, it’s the notion that, as sucky as our winner-take-all electoral college is vs. a simple popular vote election, it’s certainly better than making the thing subject to district gerrymandering. But hey, like you said, when you’ve lost the majority and need to cling to power somehow, you start getting desperate.

Who knows what the next shoe to drop will be.

To me this explains a lot. Armstrong was said to be a bully and he soaked this stuff in like it was water and he lived on a desert.

School yard bullies are a problem pushed under the rug in most of America. There should be some attention placed on this area. If a kid makes an F in school that grade follows him for quit a while, yet he and every once in a while she, can be a holly terror in behavior and little if anything is done as long as the grades stay in tack. If they don’t he or she is just kicked out of school to be someone else’s problem.

Now you take that kid and encourage him with the NRA propaganda that life should be lived aggressively. You have two types, one who finds heaven on earth scaring people with his macho behavior and the other a suppressed superiorly intelligent but physically inferior being who ultimately says if you are going to allow this kind of behavior then I am going to play by your rules, or the rules he perceives are getting the green light. The problem is obvious, the solution is there, but no one wants to do the work it will take to clean up the mess, and some do not want it cleaned up.

Did Doomy threaten to beat up the blog again?

I dunno, think I saw something where he was reduced to claiming that his fists were registered as a legal weapon…

Speaking of That Guy, I want to replay something from around the time of the Newtown massacre. I had just stumbled upon the first news coverage that afternoon, and posted this, utterly ignorant of the depth of what had happened, beyond the “shots were fired” reports–I simply saw a picture of some scared children being told to line up and walk to some destination:

First story I clicked on, had a painful picture, but maybe we all ought to force ourselves to look:

And here was Doom’s reply:

Why should we all force ourselves to look at this tragedy? Cause you think its good for us and have deemed it necessary? Or is it because you want to use this tragedy to make some kind of political point- possibly about guns?

This isn’t evidence of the guy being the Worst Person in the World; it’s not even all that offensive. But–the defensiveness is just palpable, isn’t it? We knew nothing about the specifics of the attack, and yet he’s already accused me of exploitation.

by the way, it wasn’t actually a “picture,” so much as a still/thumbnail from a video. Which, for the record, I never actually clicked on, because it was too painful to even look at the fuzzy still of that video. I just had a look at the link, it’s still there, if anyone wants to see what caught my attention, here.

Level headed people are misunderstood in this country. Even the press has gotten to the point of correcting even tempered individuals as emotionally unattached. What we have is a lot of people taking lessons on how to have a personality. Use your hands more, look the interviewer in the eye, don’t say the N word, be slick. From our art to our social channels there is no originality in this country any more, people are scared to have a sense of humor or show their real selves, someone may disapprove. I even feel Obama slipping away to the pain of fighting the world of superficial is too great, the gains too little, being a robot too easy. We need mentally healthy odd balls; it is what makes this country great. What we are getting is genetically engineered odd balls that fit some human scale far inferior to the one God made.

The “evolutionary neuroandrogenic theory” focuses on the hormone testosterone as a factor influencing aggression and criminality and being evolutionary beneficial during certain forms of competition. In most species, males are more aggressive than females. Castration of males usually has a pacifying effect on their aggressive behavior. In humans, males engage in crime and especially violent crime more than females. The involvement in crime usually rises in the early teens to mid teens which happen at the same time as testosterone levels rise. Research on the relationship between testosterone and aggression is difficult since the only reliable measurement of brain testosterone is by a lumbar puncture which is not done for research purposes. Studies therefore have often instead used more unreliable measurements from blood or saliva. Most studies support a link between adult criminality and testosterone although the relationship is modest if examined separately for each sex. Nearly all studies of juvenile delinquency and testosterone are not significant. Most studies have also found testosterone to be associated with behaviors or personality traits linked with criminality such as antisocial behavior and alcoholism. Many studies have also been done on the relationship between more general aggressive behavior/feelings and testosterone. About half the studies have found a relationship and about half no relationship.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testosterone

Testosterone Does Not Induce Aggression, Study Shows
Dec. 9, 2009 — New scientific evidence refutes the preconception that testosterone causes aggressive, egocentric, and risky behavior. A study at the Universities of Zurich and Royal Holloway London with more than 120 experimental subjects has shown that the sexual hormone with the poor reputation can encourage fair behaviors if this serves to ensure one’s own status.

Once again there is a complete absence of critical thinking. It is assumed at the outset that testosterone is bad. Is that fact? It also doesn’t include any context to the activity. Were the subjects competing? Competing and establishing dominance also increases testosterone, What toys were they playing with? Was it the activity that increased the testosterone or the object.

As for the Newtown tragedy I think it sucks and is a terrible tragedy just like everyone else does. The difference is that I can still look at the situation objectively and rationally and not let my emotions get in the way of critical thinking skills about what if anything can be done. Liberals seem to lack that ability. And btw tragedies happen all the time and they happen to children. One sensationalized tragedy doesn’t require that we throw all reason and rationale out the window concerning the gun debate. Everyday kids get snatched, raped, murdered, abused, etc. somewhere in the U.S. and in the world in general. There is constantly evil and tragedy in the world.

I can’t figure out if liberals in general are just too stupid to realize this or if they do realize this and in a sick manner have no problem with taking isolated tragedies involving children and using them for political purposes. Which is it ma’am?

“In the middle” the assumptions in this blog are 180 degrees different than the mass’s assumption that aggressive behavior is model behavior. Heroes seldom are academic; they are Rambo or John Wayne. The movie always has one Duke and the rest of the world is shorter, by casting, dumber, which really dumbs down the cast, clear right and wrong themes. In the real world there are many, many people who think they are the Duke, and the gun makes up for the shortness. If Wayne has acted in this world like he acted in the movies one of them would have just walked up behind him and popped his with a bullet, end of subject. Aggressive behavior is a short term solution, it takes character to come up with the real solution which this country is a little short on lately.

I guess it’s ok when it supports your perspective?

DownIn, while I generally agree with your premise that testosterone oftimes gets a bad rap in common discourse, I think you’re missing the point of Jay’s post, which was basically a “new afternoon thread, mix it up, lads.”

Which is his prerogative, and given the stale alternative on these pages (cough Kyle cough), I think it’s a reasonable one.

And the liberal pop psychologists come out of the woodwork en masse.

The President’s job council hasn’t met in a year-and we’ve got another column on guns?? One would think the priorities for the country would be a bit clearer at this point. Guess not.

The first time I went to a range and bought my first, all my own, firearm, the inner-jolt was incredible. The adrenaline really got pumping for some reason. But the feeling subsided and anymore, handing a firearm is not that big a deal. I suspect the fellows tested had not handled real firearms before, or if so, rarely.

Do this same test on, say, policemen. I suspect it would give a different result.

You are asking questions that really can’t be answered.

That however must not prevent us from trying.

Think I will weigh in. This nugget of information from the elite ranks of academia that your liberal mentor found is absolutely asinine.

The mere fact that you gun control lunatics are discussing its merits speaks volumes about the capacity of your rationality.

Looks to me that you emotional whips need to confiscate hot sauce also.

How do you talk to a liberal? YOU CAN’T!

Granny Godzilla,

I’ve no problem with doing whatever we reasonably can do to prevent another Newtown. To date though I’ve seen no credible solutions from the liberals. I have seen just a bunch of heated rhetoric about guns. And I still don’t see how the new law being proposed would have stopped the Newtown massacre. So I ask again. What good is the new law if it wouldn’t have done anything to prevent the very massacre that brought about the law?

stands for decibels,

What is there to own up to? I said what I said and when taken in the proper context of everything else that was said my only point is that a lot of emotionalized rhetoric isn’t going to change what happened. And nor is it going to prevent any new massacres done by madmen. If you can’t understand that then I simply cannot help you.

BTW are you going to be a man and admit that you lied with your statement above about me below. You’re sitting here with a straight face saying that you didn’t lie. And yet here it is in black and white with you stating for everyone to see that I claimed that my fists were registered as lethal weapons. I never claimed that as your lying ass damn well knows. Moonbat Betty said that. You are a LIAR and your own freaking post proves it.

Jay’s blog, Jay chooses the topics. I try to mix it up, too! My point is, for every study that supports increased testos levels = increased aggressiveness, there is one that refutes the notion. Some studies say that using saliva to test for testos are not accurate. I’m not supporting my links nor refuting Jay’s.

Unfortunately, there really isn’t much anyone can do to prevent another Newtown.

All we can do is minimize the odds it will happen again.

How could Newtown have been prevented ?
Deny the shooter access to the victims.
