Yanno, I said a week or two ago that the NRA had in its grasp an opportunity to negotiate in good faith and to be a key part of the national conversation on where we’re going to go from here with the private ownership of firearms.

I also said that if the NRA insisted on doubling down and on strong-arming its aims into the forefront of the discussion, it would find itself disinvited from the discussion and the national policy direction determined without its input and opinion.

Guess we know which path the NRA has chosen now.

If anyone wants clarification as to the purpose of the second amendment, read the Federalist 46 where James Madison, the author of the Bill of Rights explains and defines it’s purpose. To summarize Madison’s words using modern language, he stated that if the a state or many states were to have the need to defend against abuses by the federal government, then an armed people having the means to fight could outnumber and overwhelm a federal army if called upon to organize and defend the state. The intent is clear that the founders believed that the people should possess individual weapons equal to that of individual federal soldiers in order to defend against tyranny. For those that believe we have evolved, or our government has evolved, to a point that we the people have nothing to fear from government, then they are making the same mistake that millions of slaughtered people have made during the history of man kind.
As for the NRA ad, I believe the point is clear and just. Obama’s children attend a school where armed guards protect the children from possible exposure to violent criminals intending to do them harm. It is fair to say that all children deserve the same protections.

Mr. Allen – If you are that paranoid about our Federal gov’t. perhaps you and Mr. Reb should look into alternative accomodations. I’m sure there’s a freer society out there that would love to have you gentlemen as citiziens. As Mr. Grizzard once said Delta’s ready when you are. As for armed guards in schools – If the locals feel better about it that’s their decision. Frankly, I don’t think this would have helped in CT. The guy had superior firepower and body armour. A guard with a pistol? Just one more dead.

I wonder if Obama consulted NLRB’s Richard Griffin on his gun control program? Currently under indictment for racketeering and ties to organized crime, Griffin was an Obama recess apointee that required no background check. With his role as a union puppet and ties to the mob, Griffin probably knows more about guns and circumventing background checks than anyone in the Obama administration. And don’t forget, selling black market assault rifles is an area the Obama/Holder regime has a great deal of experience in.

The NRA continues to separate itself from millions of otherwise-sympathetic mainstream Americans. I’m not surprised they’ve some defenders of these mindnumbingly stupid tactics. The old rule applies here as well: 20 percent of a group will believe anything.

And for those of you who keep regurgitating “this is what the Founding Fathers REALLY meant” – read Jay’s response and questions to you last night at 8:20. Oh, heck, many of you won’t bother being challenged so here it is:

“You write: “As (with) any other constitutionally mandated right, any action which imposes limits or conditions on that right will surely be found unconstitutional.”

Given that stance, surely you support private ownership of fully automatic weapons, flamethrowers and anti-tank weapons, up to and including F-16s for those able to afford them. Sure, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles could be used to bring down airliners, but they could also be used against black helicopters so they too must be publicly available to the heroic fighters of federal tyranny.

After all, if this fantasy of opposing a tyrannical federal government by force is to have any meaning, the private citizen must be allowed to arm himself in a fashion that would make such a fight somewhat plausible, right? That’s what the Founding Fathers intended, correct?

The Supreme Court, in Heller, made it quite clear that it disagrees, ruling that the Second Amendment “does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes.” Heller was decided almost entirely on the basis of the right to self-defense, with Justice Scalia giving short shrift to the whole idea of a right to armed revolution. Scalia essentially concludes that technology has made the whole concept of a right to armed rebellion an archaic artifact, because “a militia, to be as effective as militias in the 18th century, would require sophisticated arms that are highly unusual in society at large” and that “no amount of small arms could be useful against modern-day bombers and tanks.”

He’s right. In the modern world, access to personal weapons does little or nothing to resist tyranny. In Bosnia, private gun ownership is extensive, but that didn’t stop the Serbs from carrying out genocide there, a horror ended only by outside military intervention. In Iraq, guns are even more plentiful than in Bosnia. Everybody owns them, and many of them are fully auto versions of what we call assault weapons. Yet Saddam Hussein nonetheless succeeded in imposing a brutal tyranny on that country for many decades, and he did so without even attempting to confiscate personal weapons. They simply posed little or no danger to his power.

Conversely, in countries such as Tunisia and Egypt, gun ownership is very low. Yet in recent years they somehow managed what the well-armed Iraqis never could, overthrowing pretty brutal military dictatorships.

Guns don’t overturn tyranny. People do.

I also note that you yourself propose requiring “mental health certification for ownership of guns,” along with a requirement that all parties with access to weapons be listed on the certification. You yourself are proposing that the government be allowed to determine who can and cannot possess guns, based on mental stability. It’s a fine idea. How does that pass the constitutional test that you yourself established?

Maybe the list of those banned from ownership ought to include anyone who argues that private citizens have the right to take up arms against a legitimately elected government, simply because they don’t like what that government does. You know, Timothy McVeigh. David Koresh. And the idiot James Yeager from Tennessee, who just got his carry permit yanked because he started yacking about killing people if any new gun control laws are passed.

No doubt you disagree with that decision by Tennessee authorities. By your theory, after all, Yeager not only has the First Amendment right to advocate armed overthrow of the government, he and others like him also have an implied constitutional right to pursue “Second Amendment” remedies to what they perceive as tyranny. By your line of argument, Yeager should even have the right to possess Stinger missiles.

I ordinarily despise “slippery slope” arguments. But in this case, on your interpretation of the Constitution, what constitutional basis exists for denying Yeager as many Stingers as he might be able to afford? In what provision is that power contained.

Personally, I do not cede to idgits such as Yeager the right to decide when our constitutional order must be overturned at the point of a firearm.

It’s important to note that in the 1790s, when the people of western Pennsylvania launched the so-called Whiskey Rebellion, taking up arms against the federal government to fight a tax they did not like, George Washington, while president, led state militia troops into the field against the insurrection and the protesters vanished into the mist.

In other words — and as Scalia also notes in Heller — the armed and “well-regulated” state militia back then was a force to be used BY the federal government to suppress insurrection to its legitimate laws, not as a weapon by which to launch such insurrection.

Finally, you claim that a national database would only be useful after a murder, and can never be used to prevent a murder. That would be true, I suppose, if all murders were one-offs, if a murderer, having killed once, never kills again. However, that is not their pattern. A national database that allows a very quick identification of who last purchased a particular murder weapon would of course be useful in ensuring that a murderer does not kill again, and I think you’re stretching your case beyond its snapping point to claim otherwise.”

I’m not a NRA member, will not become one, but, I think this is a legitimate question. There is no doubt in my mind that his daughters are at a far greater risk than mine. No argument there. I’m sure I have no appreciation for the actual danger that those girls live with. But, I understand that having armed guards is standard operating procedure at this school. They don’t have guards because of the president’s kids. The practice predates their attendance. Is this not the case?

It’s a PRIVATE school. You do understand the difference between a PRIVATE school and a public school yes? I know the lines are now blurry here in Georgia since the Republicans pushed through that amendment to steal public school money to pay for the chosen fews PRIVATE school, but there is a difference.

My daughter attends a PRIVATE school. I pay 20+ grand a year to send her there. I also pay taxes for the public schools. If we, the parents and financial supporters of our PRIVATE school decide to pay MORE MONEY TO HIRE ARMED GUARDS, that is our right. YOU don’t have to pay for it.

I CAN believe how low the NRA, talk radio and FOXBOTS can go since they have attacked the presidents LITTLE GIRLS before, but it amazes me that someone like you would condone it. I thought you were a Southern man of breeding and honor. Was I wrong?

So I see your comparisons…first the risk of inner city violence is much more severe and frequent in those schools. Also, I’m not sure they prevent random school shootings or stabbings any how.

Second, assuming armed guards at other schools, seems to me it is easy enough to isolate them as in Columbine. Can we reasonably screen out troubled applicants from such positions is another issue.

My point is that if folks want armed guards at schools so be it but it is very low probability of actually keeping bad guys out. School properties have much ground to cover. Additionaly technologic means are needed to make it near impossible to approach school property without being protected…

Your other examples are IMO rather silly comparisons…

The NRA had never been bashful about being desperate, and they are at it again. Remember the “cold dead hands comment from Moses?

They are also being unrealistic, because they can’t expect 20 kids and 6 six adults to be mowed down by a twenty year old coming up out of a subdivision with a Bushmaster and Bushmasters in subdivisions continue to be a business as usual matter. They are delusional.

On the other hand, driving around with a pick up truck and picking up all the guns is NOT the answer. The government can not disarm law abiding citizens until it convinces criminals to give up their guns.

I believe it should be about protecting the schools. That may mean a detachment of about three of four state gunmen stay around the school just in case.

My children mean as much to me as the president’s children do to him. My child being kidnapped or killed does NOT however, put even a hiccup in the running of our government, put the nation in distress, or put a hold on laws or bills requiring signatures from the president. Every one of you knows this to be true. The NRA and its base are using rhetoric to fire up the base, and those followers are eating it up hook, line and sinker. Columbine had an armed police officer, didn’t help. The NRA needs to be stopped from putting fear in the weak minded to protect a gun industry whose only objective is to populate this country with as many bullets and weapons as possible, for the sake of money. They are using the 2nd Amendment as the justification and I find it disgusting they are allowed to do so.
If you are so concerned with our federal government using tyranny on its citizens, you better buck up more than an AR because that won’t do anything against an F-15. To my knowledge, there isn’t a citizen in this country who has the firepower of our federal government to stop a takeover.
It is time to stop the ridiculous talking points put out by conspiracy theorist and putting fear in the weak. Our children are being murdered by mental nuts that have access to assault rifles. How many guns are not being banned? This discussion needed to happen a long time ago.

Too funny. I was at the Jesus store last week with my daughter buying some Adventures in Odyssey CD’s to listen to on the way home from Clear lake. The clerk was bad mouthing the Beeibs and i asked him what was so wrong with the Beibs. He told me (with a straight face) that if you play his stuff backwards it says Kill Jesus 666, just like his mentor’s records, Usher.

I’m about to put some ribs on. 1 hour nekkid (except rub) then 3 hours covered in aluminum (like that clerks head should have been) with some orange juice for moisture, then 30-45 minutes with no foil, covered in sauce. How does that sound? I’m using Jacks for the rub.

QUESTION: instead of apple chips, I found a bag of applewood CHUNKS the same size as the charcoal. Is there a reason NOT to use that along with the charcoal in the egg?

The words “well regulated” had a far different meaning at the time the Second Amendment was drafted. In the context of the Constitution’s provisions for Congressional power over certain aspects of the militia, and in the context of the Framers’ definition of “militia,” government regulation was not the intended meaning. Rather, the term meant only what it says, that the necessary militia be well regulated, but not by the national government.

Whenever y’all want to show me some hard evidence that the “militia” of the Second Amendment is somehow different and distinct from the “militia” of Article 1, Section 8 — which Congress has control over — I’ll be all ears.

Oscar, that’s pretty much what I’ve been saying in the 2A discussions around here lately. The “militia” of th 2A is the same as the Congressionally-controlled “militia” of Article 1, Section 8, and if any pro-gun folks want to explain how they’re not, I’m all ears.

TC and myself have given you the Heller decision, the writer of the 2A Mason’s comments on the militia and other founders comments but you just refuse to accept these views and want to stick to the lefts viewpoint. The Majority in Heller said it is an individual right and as such has set the precedence and interpreted the law. If you do not like it the change the Constitution.

Last night I was thinking about “Christians” and guns, trying hard to fathom the reasoning as to why a follower of Christ, the most peace loving man ever, would even want to consider owning weapons….and I got a headache…but then…

It came to my mind that the story of Jesus would make a great sci fi flick. You know the one about an advanced civilization sending a liaison to earth to try to help its people understand the true nature of life. How, with one helping another, problems can be easier solved, and with the acceptance of others beliefs and tolerance for other societies, great advances could be made for all. But the natives are restless and fearful and those in power see the danger to that power if the visitor is allowed to continue. So he is arrested on trumped up charges and condemned to death. After they supposedly killed him and his body is locked up in the morgue, the visitor is really back on the mothership having a three day conference deciding if earth should be called a bad cause and destroyed. In the end the visitor ends the conference by saying “leave them to there own devices, they aren’t worth the bomb.”
In the end scene the earth leaders want to get the body for display, open the morgue just in time to see the visitor transport back to his ship. Thus doubt is born and word gets out…could he have been God?…and a religion is born.

THAT I could believe!

Everyone agrees that the President and his children deserve protection. Even the NRA.

The point of the ad is that President Obama is doing nothing to protect OUR children.

Not one measure taken by NY State yesterday or in Obama’s planned actions, would have prevented any of the *mass* shootings that have happened in the last year or more. Nothing.

Liberals would NEVER come out against the 4th Amendment, which was the vehicle for Roe v. Wade. Yet you are willing to come out against the 2d Amendment, which is supported by even greater volumes of state and Federal law.

Here’s a topic for a future article: Given the proposed mandatory reporting requirements for mental health professionals (that they identify *potentially dangerous* people) how many people who need mental health will avoid it? I wonder how that math works out. Isn’t this an even uglier violation of our 4th amendment rights to privacy.

This current round of gun control is all about the NRA and gun lobbies working against obama/biden in 2008&2012. Google NRA + Biden and see how long the ugliness has gone on.

Seems everyone is really missing the point. If you read the AP article about today’s announcement, the focus is on guns. There are one or two sentences about first amendment privileges. The government wants to dictate what can be in games and in movies. I do not disagree that what is in these video games and movies should be scaled back, but that is not the government’s role to do it by simply tightening the reins on our rights. If this country had a belief system as its foundation, wouldn’t that be the funnel in which everything filtered through? If we held true to the values of that belief system, then the games would stop selling and the movies would not be attended and those issues would solve themselves.

Instead we do not want to take any personal responsibility to change our own actions. We would rather point the finger and ask the government to pass a law. We would rather stick our heads in the sand, so that we do not see that our freedom is being limited. Rather than personal responsibility, we want someone else to limit how we should live.

In the meantime, we continue to pass more laws with the audacity to believe that a criminal will all of a sudden obey the law. When the criminal does not obey the law, we reward them with a new cell, cable TV, exercise equipment, etc… Until we start to deter crime with punishment then we cannot expect things to change.

Instead of punishing criminals to deter egregious actions, we are discussing putting armed guards at every school. Really? Think about that. Does an armed guard change the actions of people that want to do wrong? People that choose to do wrong over right. I do not think so. I think it simply pushes them to a different location if it does that.

The problem with laws is this, laws effect those that follow the laws, not those who don’t follow laws. That means, the guys who are going to rob, steal, kill are going to have guns and the people getting robbed, stolen from, and killed won’t have anyway to protect themselves. I’m ok with stricter background checks, I wouldn’t even mind background checking everyone at a residence if someone is buying a gun.

I wouldn’t mind there being armed policeman in the schools, but I don’t want armed administrators or armed civilians. I think that would invite problems, policeman are trained to do what they do.

If gun nuts want armed schools, then tax yourselves and pay for them. Or, how about the NRA provide that sh*t for you since they have all this new money and stuff from new members.

A private school is going to provide whatever they need to attract and maintain the students they have. Trying to compare an elite private school to every single general access public school is stupid as hell and only the dumbasses will fall for it. After reading through most of the comments on the first page and a half, it’s safe to say the dumbasses did fall for it.

It’s a simple solution, and one that does not require Congress or Obama to do a damn thing. If you want armed guards in your schools, have your local board raise your taxes to provide for them. Otherwise, quit b*tching about something you want and don’t want to pay for.

Why would anyone object to armed security officers in our schools? When you go to the bank and see an armed guard, are you afraid or do you feel a little safer because someone is there to protect you? What about the airport, any government building, traffic police…etc. There not only should be armed security in our schools, there should be metal detectors at every entrance and a security system that covers windows that are broken, just like you would have in your home.
It’s silly to think if we just take away all the guns (from law abiding citizens) but do nothing to secure our schools or any other facility, that we will be safe.

What can Obama do that can not be done by a local politician? Why would the president have to get personally involved in local politics in Chicago? The best thing Obama can do is fulfill the duties of his office. The people of Chicago have plenty of local and state politicians to get involved with things as to need the president’s assistance.

That’s just my $.02 anyway. Chicago has to clean up its own mess just like any other city does. They don’t get a pass just because Obama considers it his hometown.

Jay- The armed security people at Sidwell Friends have nothing to do with the Secret Service (they’ve been there for a long time). NRA’s point is that this is a rich school protecting celebrity / politicians’ kids, while Obama and other celebrities (who have their own armed security teams) scoff at protecting average Joe’s kids. I don’t feel great about bringing any President’s kids into it, but it is hypocritical to parade out kids for political purposes and not have the incongruity pointed out

I’d sure love for someone to cite President Obama or anyone else in the administration saying or even hinting that armed guards in schools was a bad idea.

Note the subtle but CRUCIAL difference between saying that and saying “Setting aside funds to put an armed guard in EVERY school as a solution for our gun problem” is a bad idea.

A perimeter wouldn’t work and would be too expensive anyway. This belief that technology can save us from a lot of things just isn’t true.

My point to others is that this new bill or law would solve absolutely nothing. It’s just a bunch of noise and photo opping. A bunch of feel good that we did something nonsense.

Obama’s 23 Planned Executive Actions On Guns

Here is a list provided by the White House of the 23 executive actions President Obama plans to take to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Want to protect human lives when it comes to guns but fails to see the irony that they oppose the protection of the most innocent in our society from being dismembered and thrown into trash cans…the unborn children of our society cry out for a remedy to their murder but we worry less about them.

Funnyif those children were killed by a gunman when they were still in their mother;s womb we would be outraged. And yet…we let so called doctors kill them “legally”. What a sick and cruel joke.
Where is the outrage for them.

55,000,000 and counting….when will it end? When will skull crushing and dismemberment of an innocent child stop? Sadly, when you have the defender of the heinous crime of abortion in the White House what we expect is for it to never end…and yet he weeps for the children in Conn. not even realizing that both are equally tragic and part of the Culture of Death that he enables.
