The ever-subtle geniuses at the NRA strike again

The National Rifle Association is not exactly renowned for its subtlety and sense of decorum. It does not persuade; it bullies. It does not discuss; it shouts. And decades of exposure to its own shouting have left it tone-deaf.

The NRA’s newest ad continues in the long tradition.

As the NRA apparently sees it, it is hypocritical and elitist for the president to protect his two daughters against kidnap efforts or physical attack by enemies foreign or domestic unless every other child in America also gets his or her own personal Secret Service detail.

0311: “Right after Newtown, the NRA recommended resource officers in schools and the libs. and press were beside ”

Were you there in Newtown to help clean up the slaughtered children from the walls and floors of the school?

I mean, you know, if you’re convinced that the most important thing in the world is to stick your thumb in the eyes of these phantasmal ‘liberals”, and since what these liberals obviously want is to take away all the guns, then clearly the thing to do is to buck up and accept these slaughters as a necessary price.

So the lest you could do is offer some support and help mop up after some of the slaughters, which are only growing.

U are obviously someone who never needed a gun and probably a whimp, one that never lead anything or anyone. It is people like you that need to give up your citzenship and MOVE. There is no one anywhere in this country that doesn’t feel for those who become/became victims of violence of any kind including guns or not. U were probably driving and texting this message but dont believe it should be illegal. Your comments are shallow and without common sense. FWIW, I will never for the life of me understand why small businesses didn’t just get behind Single-Payer. It would have taken the whole insurance hassle completely out of your hands and you wouldn’t have had to mess with it any more.

My issue with a single payer…right now docs get paid by Aetna, BCBS, etc. At times there may be disputes with one or the other. While that dispute is being settled (they are not paying docs during this dispute time)…all the other companies are paying….so the practice can be cash-flowed. If there is a dispute with a single payer, ALL the payments stop!

Interesting. When I was coming up, military brat that I am, all you needed to get through the bad part of town to the good part of town were your fists and your wits.

Sometimes you got into fights, sometimes you ran from fights, but EVERY time you returned home in time for dinner. But you weren’t scared to put up your fists if you had to and fight. Now people are scared of getting their azzes kicked, they’ll shoot an unarmed kid before they’ll fight.

Today, people are such punks, suck scared azzes, such pu##$$ies, they’re scared to go out their door unless they’re heavily armed. Yet they have the nerve to call someone else a wimp.

Nah, brother. And claiming that “all progress” on social issues came from Liberals is absurd. Come on, you’re better than that. EVEN IF that was the truth, “liberals” in the 60’s and 70’s weren’t united on the changes, either.

You can quote me Nixon facts all you want; fact of the matter is that as a political system and a society we are center-right and have been moving left for decades. The extremism on the right – and left – of late is an abberation and will go away like it always does.

I was waiting for your post.

The real issue that people don’t process is how pervasive gun ownership, assault weapon ownership, open carry, concealed carry, etc., creates a subtle but powerful warping of our social fabric.

Example: you’re in line at the deli. Some @sshole breaks in front of the line, right in front of you, after you’ve been waiting for 15 minutes. You look down and see he has a 9mm Glock strapped to his hip. What do you do?

Oh, never mind. I forgot that gun owners are all nice, polite, and well-behaved at all times. How stupid of me. It doesn’t matter anyway. I can always assure my place in line by just buying my own gun and carrying it openly in public all the time.

@ welcome to the occupation

In no way was society more liberal in the 60’s and 70’s. The only reason people think that is because the liberalization movements of that time were so radical – because the nation was so far to the right side. All of those things, feminism, sexual freedom, etc. are not part of the norm. If you told someone today you didn’t think that Blacks should have the same rights as whites or that women should get paid less than men you would laughed at and labeled a radical. Those were the accepted notions of a HUGE portion of society a few decades ago. And social issues are certainly not the only measure of a society on the spectrum, but they are certainly an indicator.

And as to your seemingly romantic notions about the leftist states pre 1989, any “progress” the statist nations of the 20th century made in leveling the playing field came at the expense of tens of millions of innocent people being slaughtered. Ask the millions of Chinese, Russians, Cambodians, etc. that gave their lives how they felt about that progress. Oh yeah, you can’t.

Sarcasm of course, they exempted themselves from Obamacare and will exempt themselves from gun laws also. I understand libs want gov to take care of them but how can you sit back and ignore the double standards. If it’s not good enough for gov employees it’s not good enough for me. It is good enough for you though. Ask yourself why you are stuck dumping thousands into Social Security while so many public employees won exemption from it.

I’m familiar with that position. It’s popular with conservatives.

Strangely, however, many of them don’t see a problem when an individual policyholder gets f**ked by an insurance carrier’s refusal to pay their legitimate claim. They only seem to care when it’s the provider that doesn’t get *their* money.

As someone who’s visited (and come back from) Bad Sick Land in the last few years, I can assure you that a sick patient’s unpaid bills are of a lot more consequence to the patient than to the provider.

If George Washington said the Second Amendment was written to overthrow the government (or just those democratically-elected representatives in government with which the noisiest of us disagree), please cite it and prove it.

According to his writings, it would seem that Washington’s views were quite the opposite. After the Shay’s Rebellion, a populist uprising that the weak federal government, under the Articles of Confederation, lacked an army to defeat, Washington was alarmed. He wrote this to one of his former generals, Henry Knox, ““If three years ago [at the end of the American Revolution] any person had told me that at this day, I should see such a formidable rebellion against the laws & constitutions of our own making as now appears I should have thought him a bedlamite – a fit subject for a mad house,” Washington also wrote on Feb. 3, 1787 that if the government “shrinks, or is unable to enforce its laws … anarchy & confusion will prevail.”

The solution is to give open carry permits only to nice, polite, white males, born to good families. They will thwart crime, save potential victims of mass murder, and will never abuse their right to openly carry firearms, like breaking in line, for example.

The first time I saw law enforcement officers routinely carrying assault weapons in public was in then-still-Communist China, 15 years ago. Kind of funny that as China gets a more open society, suddenly in the US we have assault rifles at the State Capitol, armed guards at each school, and people wanting to tote their manhood around in public for everyone to see.

There is a gun cult in the country. The people in it are fanatical, and are immune to statistics, math, logic. Except in the rare instance when you are currently the subject of a known stalker/homicidal maniac, owning a gun makes you per se less safe. And, if you are in a public space, and a man with a gun enters it, you are per se less safe. A second person with a gun does not make you safer.

Guns are designed to do one thing–kill mammals. If you are a mammal, and you are a species with a higher order of intelligence, you need to stay away from guns. And you need to keep guns away from people while they are in your presence, in public places. It’s really not very complicated.

In the end we all have to remember our Second Amendment was not put in place to protect us from criminals and random crime. It was put in place to protect the citizens from government.

Thomas Jefferson put it best: “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” I’ll be glad to give up my guns when the elites in Washington and Hollywood agree to disarm their bodyguards. And when President Obama stops sending his daughters to the exclusive Sidwell Friends School, which has a 9-person armed security force.
For all of these reasons, that’s why now more than ever, we need to protect the second amendment. That’s why now more than ever, we need the NRA.

Speak loudly NRA… don’t back down from the liberal lipped hypocritical fish wrappers like the AJC and the fools on this blog!

You idiots want to say Obama’s kids are more special than the rest of ours? Then up yours! As far as mine are concerned, mine are more important and I have a right to protect mine in any way I see fit, not the way that the government decides.

Afterall… if control works so well, why does Britian have a 3 times higher violent crime rate than the USA’s and they have a total ban against all guns! So why is that?

so when a conservative organization uses the same tactics that Obama used throughout the entire campgain it’s bad but when O’blamer does it it smart? Talking about the height of hyprocacy!

Not even close Tex. The second amendment was put in place because the states did not want the federal government to have a standing army. So they guaranteed the right of people to keep and bear arms as it related solely to the states’ rights to maintain 13 militias, instead of one standing federal army. It was put in place to protect STATE GOVERNMENTS from a standing federal army. The people who wrote the second amendment didn’t give a crap about individual rights to bear arms. The entire point of the second amendment became outdated and irrelevant when the idea of a standing federal army became accepted.

The second amendment was adopted to ensure the “security of a free State,” not to ensure “security from the State.” The security of the new country was threatened by foreign powers, not its own citizens. The new country needed military power, and the debate was between a standing federal army or 13 state militias. The states would ratify the Constitution only with an amendment providing for the 13 militias, and thus was born the second amendment. The new country had no other army, and would not until the War of 1812. There is no basis in history for the idea that the second amendment is or was intended to allow the individual citizens to protect themselves from the new government by keeping and bearing arms.

The Founding Fathers had a word for using you individual weapon as “protection” from the government. What was it? “Treason.”

MeetintheMiddle: “And as to your seemingly romantic notions about the leftist states pre 1989, any “progress” the statist nations of the 20th century made in leveling the playing field came at the expense of tens of millions of innocent people being slaughtered. Ask the millions of Chinese, Russians, Cambodians, etc. that gave their lives how they felt about that progress. Oh yeah, you can’t.”

Well, it certainly seems that way sometimes. But that’s an illusion, I’m afraid.

Unlike the liberal — of which you are one, from what I can tell — I do not think that we are yet anywhere near being in a position to judge on these matters.

Don’t get me wrong. The Stalinist dictatorships of the 20th C were atrocious. But the violence unleashed by the fascists, and even the so-called defenders of capitalist “freedom” during the Cold War, was also abysmal.

But what we are seeing now is the encroachment of a neoliberal state, unconstrained by the threat of a different world order, that is trashing the planet and creating a social order of incredible injustice and socio-economic division.

Three more dead in Sandy Springs.

Let me check . . . yep, gunshots.

The most important Executive Order signed today by our President directed the CDC to maintain gun death statistics. The NRA will try to stop it. They know that once reliable and complete numbers are maintained and published, the public will be nauseated by the carnage that has been going on, under the radar. Homicides, Suicides, Accidents—when the true numbers come out the amount of blood on the NRA’s hands will be even more disgusting.

Nothing prompts a lack of clear thing on both sides more than the debate over gun control. Yes, the NRA is too strident, but no more strident than many of those on the Left who are itching to take away the rights of law abiding gun owners based upon the false premise that doing so that will end or reduce this problem.

In fairness, those who feel that the president is being hypocritical over the armed security guard issue do not feel that way because they want 24/7secret service protection for their kids, just the acknowledgment by those who have such security should not deny any security to the children of others.

And yes, we are all unhappy that it has come to that in this nation, but it has. Fire arms are in America’s DNA. Without guns, this nation would not exist, and they have been around and widely available since the beginning. And tragedies such as this one have been possible since the development of automatic weapons in the early 1900’s. But until the last few decades, mass gun murders were rare. What changed?

That leads into territory the Left does not want to be made a part of the discussion. The coarsening, incivility, immorality, decline, and degradation of the culture, and the rise of relative morality and ever increasing secularization. Guns have always been available in America, but there was once a cultural moral compass that is quickly disappearing, and its disappearance has been seriously exacerbated by the entertainment industry and the rise of the Internet.

Second Amendment advocates simply want the constitution upheld and ther rights of law abiding citizens not to be denigrated because there are those who disobey the law. Obama and the Dem/libs say that we cannot do nothing, even if the only thing we can do is further limit the rights of law abiding citizens — then at least we are doing something (even if it doesn’t solve the problem). Universal background checks. What a great idea. More burdens on law abiding citizens – And yes, we did something. But no, they won’t be “universal” and never will be because criminals and the disturbed will pay no attention, as has always been the case.

I may have missed it, but were mandatory ten year prison sentences, with no parole, for those in possession of guns while committing a crime part of the solution proposed today. Criminals would pay attention to that. No? I didn’t think so. That would actually be and effective component of a comprehensive solution. But the beat goes on and this problem will get worse because the root cause — the disappearing moral compass and the failure to severely and harshly punish gun violent criminals — is not being addressed. Only the rights of law abiding gun owners.

old man be wrong

The main purpose of the Second Amendment was so the people, mainly the anti-federalists, had a final check on the power of government. If the contract of the Constitution was violated and someone tried to seize power like a King or to withhold the rights of the people, another armed revolution would be possible. If the government was aware of this right, and knew that the population was armed, then they felt the government would be much less likely to take undemocratic actions for fear of popular revolt and overthrow. The second amendment exists because the American founders, and the American people as a whole, recognized that the right to defend one’s self, one’s family, and one’s property is a fundamental human right. A person does not need the government’s permission to defend themselves, and it is immoral for the government to hinder them in that regard. The founders did not delineate between the need for self-defense against criminal elements or government, and used both as examples for why American citizens needed to retain personal firearms. That there are those today, in and out of government, who desire to disarm law-abiding citizens demonstrates the wisdom of including the second amendment among the personal rights and privileges that are enumerated to citizens of the United States by the Constitution.

What a sad commentary on our current political discourse that you would mistake me for a liberal. I happen to be a white, gun owning, deficit and debt hating, private school educated, son of Republicans…member of society who grew up and became and adult and learned to think for myself. I guess you can call me a libertarian, now, with extremely conservative fiscal ideas, liberal social leanings, and a profound disdain for the professional political class currently destroying Washington.

However, though I could not agree more that the fascists and so – called capitalists have a less than stellar track record themselves, I implore you not to fall in the trap of thinking the statist atrocities of the 20th century are an illusion. I admire your notion to withhold judgement until the royal “we” are in a position to judge, but the tens of millions of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends slaughtered in the name of leftist ideals provide plenty of elements upon which to make judgements.

Grew up in a house with 2 rifles, two pistols, two shotgun sand a father who didn’t hunt. He used the guns rarely, but when he did he was protecting our animals and property from four-legged varmints. His pragmatic view included a “I got no use for the NRA” because he loved people and felt that organization was hardened to humanity.
The video clip is revealing in this respect. To compare protecting the children of the leader of the free world to placing guns in the hands of thousands of unsophisticates in and around children is heartless profit driven insanity.
I appreciate Jay’s desire to keep civil discourse, tend to agree with the second post on this thread by decibels.
