The National Rifle Association is not exactly renowned for its subtlety and sense of decorum. It does not persuade; it bullies. It does not discuss; it shouts. And decades of exposure to its own shouting have left it tone-deaf.
The NRA’s newest ad continues in the long tradition.
As the NRA apparently sees it, it is hypocritical and elitist for the president to protect his two daughters against kidnap efforts or physical attack by enemies foreign or domestic unless every other child in America also gets his or her own personal Secret Service detail.

“Here is a list provided by the White House of the 23 executive actions President Obama plans to take to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre:”
Thanks for the list, GG. I can’t find too much objectionable in it except number 14. I am not sure the CDC is qualified to research such a thing. It should be an independent entity (with no political bias) with proven experience and trustworthiness (measured by the validation of its findings in other studies by numerous other research groups) in researching social issues.

A better way to eliminate gun violence?…… make a raid on the South side Chicago gangs and round up all of their guns. Ought to be good for at least two or three hundred lives saved just in one year. Tell me why everyone gets so upset about 20 white children getting gunned down in CT and ignores several hundred blacks in Chicago who meet the same fate.

I voted for Obama and the NRA video is correct…if its good enough for his kids its good enough for mine.
Ok, Einstein why don’t you pay what Obama pays then if you think your kids deserve it.
Tuition for 2012-2013
Lower School… $33,268 (includes hot lunch and textbooks)
Middle and Upper Schools… $34,268 (includes hot lunch)
Here’s the website for you to apply to have your kids attend the same school.
http://www.sidwell.edu/admissions/index.aspx
When you pay that kind of money, you also pay for security. When you whine and b*tch about taxes being to high while putting your kids in public school, you still have a resource officer courtesy of the local pd here in Georgia. If you want more than that, then you start writing the checks.

the ban on some guns and clips is simply an assault on the second ammendment. that is not a fact based on fear, its simply a fact. why didnt the plan propose some restrictions of hollywoods and game makers 1st ammendment rights? could it be the ACLU would oppose these? or Obama and democrat political donors?

all this gun grabbing nonsense is simply political payback for endorsing republicans last election just like all the northern states that have republcan governors and legislatures going after unions because they backed obama.

The sad part of the state of political discourse today is that “pro gun” people say, “if you disagree with me, then you want to take ALL the guns away and tyranny will prevail.”…while others say, “if you want to own a shotgun, you want an anti-tank weapon to shoot rabbits with and everyone should be armed to the hilt.” While I respect those who are “law abiding” citizens and own guns, just remember that those “bad guys” you arming yourself against happen to have that same right to own them. I personally do not own a gun, and only have fired one once in my life. Just not my cup of tea. My only problem with some of the more vocal gun rights advocates is the insistence that ANY meaningful response to gun violence is some sort of conspiratorial end run on our “liberty.” I think our founding fathers gave us “certain inalienable rights”….and those rights come with a great deal of responsibility and restraint/tolerance.
Reading the list of what the President wants to “do” reads like a very non-threatening, nation-wide response that we as responsible citizens need to engage each other to seek common-sense solutions…I for one, am all for having EVERYONE at the table to discuss. But when the NRA starts from a position of “my cold dead hands”….not really a way to find meaningful common ground…because WHATEVER your position on gun ownership, you cannot tell me there is NOT an epidemic of gun violence/accidental death in the country! And that is not a “libtard” or “Con” take on the situation…just a fact

If that is what he truly wants, then it’s one of the very few things (on any subject) I can agree with him on. So let’s do it.
1) Not just resource officers for his children (the Secret Service) or resource officers for inner city schools but resource officers for ALL schools !
2) Also, gun safety should be taught at all school levels (as I believe he has also recommended).

The campaigner-n-chief certainly had a great grandstanding campaign photo op session that included his shameless inclusion of innocent children. Beyond that all he’s done is handed off to the Senate where it’s said that Reid won’t bring an assault weapons ban up for a vote. The 23 executive orders sounded reasonable but I’ll bet they get very little follow up and follow through. So for all this Biden/Obama with some anti-gun nut members of congress putting on such a show the left gets many more NRA members and many more new gun owners.

After reading this early and listening to the President’s speech I wanted to check on something to make sure I was right. The following quote is from the Syllabus to District of Columbia v. Heller, written by Antonin Scalia:
The nerve of the President. He wants to reimpose the ban on assault weapons and big clips and make people submit to a background check to buy a gun.
These people!
And, what kind of garbage argument is this?
“Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose:…. [We've had] longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of fire-arms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms….[There is an] historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.”
The NRA can jump up and down and yell all it wants, spouting gibberish like the ad in question. But, Congress can restrict Second Amendment rights just like it can restrict other Constitutional rights. All it needs is a “rational basis” and that is very easy to come by. The bozos in the gun lobby won’t admit it; but, they know it’s true. And, that’s probably why they yell so much – they don’t want anyone looking behind the curtain and start talking about rational restrictions on guns.
Chances are, the NRA will prevail. It most certainly will unless there is an unprecedented flood of people yelling at their Senators and Representatives – the lily-livered folks that live in fear of the NRA. They will continue to do so unless they come to fear their constituents more.
If you are rational, like the President and Justice Scalia (hah!), shoot (hah again) your people in DC an Email.

Woman robbed at gunpoint at Kroger in Vinings
By Christopher Seward
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Cobb County police said a woman putting groceries in her car at a Vinings Kroger store this week was held up at gunpoint and are seeking the public’s help in finding the suspect.
The robbery occurred around 11 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the store at 3300 Cobb Parkway in the Riverview Village Shopping Center, according to police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce.
Investigators said a man pointed a handgun at the woman and demanded all of her “stuff.”
“The offender fled from the scene on foot southbound on Cobb Parkway after he picked up the victim’s pocketbook from the ground,” Pierce said in a release.
The spokesman said the woman was not injured. The suspect is described as a 5-foot-4 black male with thin build, between 20 to 30 years old and wearing a black sweater with a red design around the neck. He was also wearing black sneakers and khaki pants.
—————————————-
Hopefully the black male with thin build will be the subject of an upcoming CDC study and will also adhere to new restrictions on magazine capacity. Or they could just make strong-arm robbery a crime.
Oh wait, they’ve already done that….

At the same time, since Arabic Digits is so excited, is he writing a check to pay for all of these guards? Seems to be a call for new taxes but of course they’ll object to that. My thought has always been to impose a new tax on the sale of bullets and guns to pay for implementation of these new actions. We charge people to park at state parks. Its a fair use tax.

Cracks me up when folks talk about how “if only people had been armed” at any of the recent tragedies. The NRA has 300,000 new member since shooting in Conn. and over $2 million in donations. The Latest polls show 73% didn’t want any new gun controls 23 % said yes and 4% no opinion. Think I just threw up a little. Please don’t call it my “beloved GOP.” Only thing I have in common with the Republicrats is that I usually don’t like what Dems are putting out, either.
Just saying, you seem to be getting pretty good wood yourself imagining all this death and cold hands. Kinda creepy if you ask me.

Yeah, that’s not how accounting works (giggling)
Unless and until you can *quantify* the cost of the program and *quantify* the specific amount you claim you can save, we can just agree to do away with the dependent exemption on personal income taxes.
If you want to revisit this later, we can always look at your hard numbers.
“Heck, you might even have plenty of people to volunteer their services !”
Then again, we might not. And if you told a prospective landlord that you “might” be able to pay the rent each month, I doubt he’d rent to you. So let’s either get some firm figures in hand or let’s chop out that exemption, k?

Did I say that one life is more precious than the other? I don’t think so. For you to suggest the fact that there is no difference in someone shooting 20 preschool children while they sit in a classroom to violence on the streets in Chicago, well, I have no words for you.

“We are the richest, most powerful country ever on Planet Earth. ”
Do you know the wealth of the Roman Empire? Relative to its time, I might argue the Roman Empire was more powerful too.
Richest? Debatable. You have money illusion. When we are no longer the reserve currency of the world, that will quickly change.
Most powerful? Now – yes. But waning swiftly.

The actual facts and statistics seem to prove your more guns = more violence wrong:
“The violent crime rate – which includes murder, rape, and beatings – is half of what it was in the early 1990s. And the violent crime rate involving the use of weapons has also declined at a similar pace.”
“Over the past 20 years, virtually every state in the country has liberalized gunownership rules and many states have expanded concealed carry laws that allow more people to carry weapons in more places. There around 300 million guns in the United States and at least one gun in about 45 percent of all households. Yet the rate of gun-related crime continues to drop.”

Granny (and Jay): Yes I do have a problem with the question. Am i a little paranoid about security? You betcha. I know how to get into your computer and I’m an amateur, how about the real “pro’s?” You fill lut your little Doc’s questionaire and he has some nice person enter into your computer data file and someone hacks his record. Gee, look, here is a list of houses that don’t jhave guns to protect themselves, let’s rob them (if you answered no guns), here is a list of houses with guns we can target to get more weapons to sell on the black market (if you checked yes to guns). And don’t tell me it doesn’t happen. How long has it been since the last “major” security theft announcement? 12 hours? If they can hack the FBI they can damn sure hack Dr. Pudley’s 15 year old XP network that has no firewall much less an AV or update.
As to them even asking? Many people are timid when it comes to Doctors and will do ANYTHING a Doc tells them to do. How many women have had a C-section or induced labor because a Doc was pushing his dinner reservations or tee time?
As to the CDC, I’ve already stated my reasons, but I’ll do it again. They there to take care of infectious diseases not make political statements. I know many people that work there that are really hacked off at the political idiots who do know “doctor/scientist” work taking their limited cash and using it for political power grabs. The CDC is there to cure the cold, ebola, AIDS, ect……. NOT to preach about guns or global warming. We have other agencies for that. Let NOAA preach about global warming. Let the FBI, Homeland Security, or other law enforcement personnel deal with gun violence as it happens on the practical side and let the politicians get it settled on the political side. let the census bureau crunch the numbers if need be, they take care of all the other “social numbers” for us. The CDC is underfunded as it is to do what it is SUPPOSED to do don’t steal more money from it and add useless people to it.
I hope i was clear, if not feel free to ask for clarification (I know you will anyways lol) or to disagree. I don’t pretend to know everything or be inflexible in my thinking. I have had my mind changed here before. Hell, Jay did it at least once but don’t tell him, he’ll get all swole up about hisself………..

DIA — “Pew says 62% of Democrats favor armed-guards. And, as far as the dependent exemption, you including those that qualify for earned income credit? The poorest of the poor? It’ll never happen.”
Oh, you thought I was *serious?*
I’m simply drawing a parallel with our conservative friends’ argument with respect to universal health care coverage. They were upset that everyone was going to have to pay for it, so one of their ‘market-based’ solutions was that sicker people should pay more for the entitlement.
Fair enough. So let’s apply that *exact same thinking* to the funding of armed school resource officers. If sick people should pay more for their coverage, then shouldn’t people with kids — who are the ones *consuming* most of that protection — be the ones to pay more?
The two simplest ways to do that are to either impose a user fee at schools or to eliminate the tax benefit of having kids (since the kids are now going to cause the nation to incur a significant new cost).
I’m sure our conservative friends and associates will see the wisdom of charging more from the people who are consuming more of a good or service. After all, that’s just smart business, right?

There are about one thousand plus school systems nationally that have armed law enforcement or armed resource officers in place that have been in place even prior to the Sandy Hook incident. The state of PA. is using former retired state highway patrol officers. Evidently individual school systems are finding the money. The suggestion that qualified volunteers might be supplemental resources as well is also true.
