A trans-Atlantic tribute to the late Miss Etta James

Almost exactly a year ago, we lost the great and irreplaceable Etta James. People with that kind of voice and presence just don’t come along that often, but the kind of music that she and other blues pioneers made will never disappear. In the right hands, it’s as vibrant and gut-busting as it ever was.

In fact, we’re seeing a sort of renaissance of blues and soul music, and for some reason a lot of the best stuff is coming out of Great Britain, featuring big-voiced stars such as Adele and Emeli Sandé. Here’s another rising British vocal star, Paloma Faith, performing a song that Etta made her own. I won’t argue that it matches Ms. James’ version, but it is very much in the same tradition, keeping it alive for new generations.

Have a good weekend, everybody.

Someone mention something about the English, and the blues?

Just happens I’m getting around to reading Keef’s autobio. I really didn’t know how big a deal the whole notion of “bringing the Chicago Blues to England” was to the Stones, and the bands they gigged with, back before they became superstars.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite slow ones from ‘em.

Today is my first weekend without college football — I’m gonna have to go through some withdrawal symptons in order to make it — good thing I recorded a few games for times just like this…..

8:51 am

Just listened to the singer that Jay profiled, and I’m thinking, “What’s up with this? All these young, british white girls with voices of 40 year old black women!”

Must be the water…..It’s good to know that there’s a generation out there somewhere who still appreciates
amercican blues and soul music. When Grand was alive and we used togo on our barbque and blues tour every year, the younger generation showing up was down to me and about 5 others.

So, I’m glad to know that all those great blues men and women, who may be forgotten here, won’t be forgotten around the world.

Here’s my install — she’s not a blues singer, she was mostly known for jazz — but when she DID sing the blues, you can feel her pain, right down to YOUR bones:

I’m going to show both versions of this song by the same woman — the first one is live from Japan, where she’s singing this after her friend had just passed away. The resolution isn’t that great, but the singing still comes through:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgT7AyPmjfM

This one has better resolution– mainly because it’s just her song put to graphics — but both are to be enjoyed:

What’s the Blues anyway? Howling Wolf can explain it for ya’ll

This is from the Movie, Cadillac Records. The actor who plays Wolf must’ve been one of his relatives! He’s got that same gravelly voice and intense look about him. Anyway this scene portrays the intense rivalry between Wolf and Muddy Waters. I was told by my Grand that the mutual frenemy hatred was real.

Since country ballad and blues are intertwined by a thick thread of pain but a thin thread of understanding, i just HAD to add the late great Patsy Cline.

Why do I get the feeling that Ms Faith is/was trying to ‘mimic’ how a black, female, blues singer would do it. Don’t get me wrong, she did a pretty good job regardless, but she ain’t Etta and nobody ever will be again. Until the day comes that we universally can say that – AT LAST – there’s somebody as good as Etta, which as I said we never will, we’ll just have to keep her alive in our hearts and heads.

At last! Some hard-fought, close games. Hated to see Denver lose — especially the way they did. Hoping for a San Fran win. I sure hope the Falcons bring it tomorrow. Otherwise, they’re dead and suffer another humiliating first-round defeat. Seattle is a much-improved team than the team Atlanta played at the beginning of the season. I’m looking for some imaginative play-calling from the Atlanta booth to slow down the Seattle rush.
