A trans-Atlantic tribute to the late Miss Etta James

Almost exactly a year ago, we lost the great and irreplaceable Etta James. People with that kind of voice and presence just don’t come along that often, but the kind of music that she and other blues pioneers made will never disappear. In the right hands, it’s as vibrant and gut-busting as it ever was.

In fact, we’re seeing a sort of renaissance of blues and soul music, and for some reason a lot of the best stuff is coming out of Great Britain, featuring big-voiced stars such as Adele and Emeli Sandé. Here’s another rising British vocal star, Paloma Faith, performing a song that Etta made her own. I won’t argue that it matches Ms. James’ version, but it is very much in the same tradition, keeping it alive for new generations.

Have a good weekend, everybody.

(Female) Cop-Killer Executed in Alabama
(AP) ^ | DAVE BRYAN
Posted on Friday, May 10, 2002 1:58:19 AM by Dallas

ATMORE, Ala. —
Lynda Lyon Block, A political extremist convicted of murdering a policeman in 1993 was put to death in the electric chair Friday, becoming the first woman executed in Alabama in 45 years.

Lynda Lyon Block declined to pursue final appeals late Thursday, claiming the courts were corrupt and lacked jurisdiction in her case. She was put to death shortly after midnight.

Among Lynda’s “extreme political views” were that the Constitution and constitutional statutes should be regarded as law in the courts; that resistance to false arrest is lawful; and that defense of self or of another, who is believed to be under unlawful threat of deadly force, by the use of deadly force – even if the assailant is a policeman – is lawful.

Her husband’s Obit for his wife:

In February of 1991 Lynda had met me when she joined the Libertarian Party, and we became friends, discovering many shared, and complimentary traits

Together we studied the Constitution and laws and discovered the devices used to deceive Americans into surrendering freedom.

While we were in Opelika, Alabama on October 4, 1993 Lynda came to my defense when an attempted false arrest by a city policeman, who first reached for his gun, turned into a gunfight between him and me.

She was murdered by barbarians because she knew too much about their conspiracy to enslave and loot Americans, because she dared to engage in combat – successfully – with one of their enforcers while defending me and her son, and because she refused to apologize for her actions. Lynda conducted herself heroically and with dignity to the very end, and deserves to be remembered as a hero.

The Science of Why Comment Trolls Suck

…The researchers were trying to find out what effect exposure to such rudeness had on public perceptions of nanotech risks. They found that it wasn’t a good one. Rather, it polarized the audience: Those who already thought nanorisks were low tended to become more sure of themselves when exposed to name-calling, while those who thought nanorisks are high were more likely to move in their own favored direction. In other words, it appeared that pushing people’s emotional buttons, through derogatory comments, made them double down on their preexisting beliefs.

copy that- see Romney and the republican failure. Hannity and the boys get pushing for unloading on the left. The real power is to formulate a position, stick with it, and talk over your opponent- see Reagan and Clinton (and Matt Ryan and Bryant). Really odd to see Bradshaw seemingly pissed the Falcons won- they got up by destroying the Seahawks unless I am missing something. Next week you will see a lot of crossing patterns with Gonzalez, Jones, and White- a lot of ball control and the Falcons will win.

Gale,
Good morning, cousin…

I’ve always wondered why it makes a whit of difference if one is gay or not. Jodie Foster Gay? Big whoop. She’s a fine actress and and not hard on these eyes regardless. I recently read an article about Lincoln and the fact that he may have had a gay affair of multi-years with one of his male secretaries. True or not, it doesn’t matter. He was the president at one of the Nations toughest times…and…like him or not…he was no “limp wrist”
If he was gay then he was one of two gay Presidents. Again, Big Whoop.

This “I’m skeered of gays” crap has got to go. You would think that by now, we would have outgrown that.

I thought ir was going to be a squibber but he must have goofed as he seemed to intentionally top the ball. NO body wanted a run back of course but the team attacked the on sides like it was planned..

We win…who cares but I’d like to hear the official version…our defense wasnt’ exactly fooling anyone at that point…giving them the ball at midfield was the worst outcome since we clearly wouldn’t give them a chance to return..almost soiled myself..
