I agree completely on Armstrong. If he got caught, denied it at first, but came around without too much fuss and admitted it, I think most people would forgive. However, even recently, he was still claiming all of these people are liars, and this is a witch hunt, that he has NEVER done these things, etc. Who knows how many people’s lives and reputations he’s ruined over the years by using his considerable fame, money and clout to disparage and harm those who were probably just doing their jobs? I know he’s not a murderer or molester (as far as we know !), but his attitude is one of the most corrosive and evil types there is.

On stupid coin ideas – Let’s look at the proposal.

Why bother to coin a $1Trillion coin? And why Platinum? Why not just use the worthless paper we currently use? There is absolutely NOTHING backing the current Federal Reserve Notes other than the ability of government to steal money and productivity from us to pay the debt. If a $trillion are printed out of thin air to purchase $1Trillion worth of Platinum to create a coin worth $1Trillion, then why not just use the paper to pay the debts. That is EXACTLY what they do every day! The Federal Reserve just creates money electronically or just prints it out of thin air. It is only the belief that the US government will honor its debts (and legal tender laws that FORCE us to use them) that give these worthless pieces of paper any worth at all.

The entire monetary system of the US is a complete joke. That is exactly how this coin issue should be looked at.

End the Fed. Restore the freedom to do business in sound money and allow the market to decide what will be our new money. Gold and Silver will win out.

Mr. Bookman, do you have any idea of how the monetary system actually works? I don’t think so, given some of the remarks you’ve made in this post and many others in the past.

The Federal Reserve Board of Atlanta is down at 11th Street and West Peachtree. Why don’t you call them and ask them if they will explain it to you? I’m sure that there is someone there who can describe for you exactly how this works. It would be very helpful if people who are paid to comment on economic matters actually had some idea of what they were talking about.

For the record, it’s actually a double-entry accounting system. There is nothing that “backs” the currency. Its value is what someone will give you for it. No country on earth uses a system that is “backed” by anything.

The government doesn’t have to use anything to create more money.

Well, then, at the very least I guess you are going to have to admit he doesn’t choose his words very carefully. First of all, he was not speaking ONLY about “young people”, but ESPECIALLY about young people (who does he reference as smokers in his subsequent metaphor? His parents and probably adults in general). Secondly, he uses two odd verbs in this context: “cower” (in relation to those who are presumably now ashamed to smoke and, in the future, to carry guns) and “brainwash” (not a word with many positive connotations, especially when used by a government official). There goes your glib finding “anything the slightest bit controversial about that quote” hypothesis.

Honestly, I don’t know nor do I care. My child will not be in those classrooms. Now, if you want my opinion about teaching and training teachers to be armed in the classroom, that’s a different monster.

I wouldn’t advocate such a thing because of the liability issue and recurrent training requirements necessary for such a thing. If you’re going to properly arm and train teachers, it’s going to take more than a 3 day class to properly teach them how to protect and defend that gun in close quarter fighting. If it were that simple, police academies and basic traning wouldn’t take months to accomplish.

Silly that the risk of having a gun in a school outweighs the probability that a shooter will show up at your school….Nuts.

Well, seeing that you’re in the actuarial sciences, you should be able to do the math on that one. Count the number of schools and shootings and then look at the number of guns you’d introduce on campus by arming teachers.

Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for senators: 1) they must be at least 30 years old, 2) they must have been citizens of the United States for at least the past nine years, and 3) they must be inhabitants of the states they seek to represent at the time of their election.

Note what is not included: Do not have to be 1) lawyer, 2) doctor, 3) business owner/executive, 4) offspring of politician, and no previous experience in any other elected office required. Miss Judd could have some issues meeting the 3rd requirement above but is otherwise qualified to be a US Senator.

I am so sick of you guys on the left making patently FALSE statements such as this one Jay:

The debt ceiling debate is NOT silly at all. It is probably the single most important debate we will have this year. More important than the “fiscal cliff” debate by far. The debt ceiling, contrary to your outrageous lie, DOES NOT KEEP AMERICA FROM PAYING DEBTS ALREADY INCURRED!!! RATHER IT KEEPS AMERICA FROM BORROWING ADDITIONAL MONEY!!!

How hard is it to understand the concept of “debt ceiling”? It simply means when you get to that point you cannot borrow ANY MORE money. You assume that if we get to that point we will stop paying our bills. That is patently ridiculous. We still will have trillions of dollars coming in every year and we will have to live within THAT REVENUE. Funny how you don’t even acknowledge the OTHER POSSIBILITY of cutting spending to that level. If we cut spending, we no longer have to worry about paying the debt.

Federal workers make an average of $85,000 per year. Everybody else makes an average of $55,000. Obama is hiring, on average, 37,000 people a year. If we put a federal hiring freeze in place we can save approx. $35 billion over 10 years without cutting ANYBODY. We currently have 2,115,707 federal employees whose salaries cost us $179 billion EVERY YEAR. If we cut federal salaries by 10% (about the same amount state salaries have been cut in Georgia) they would still be well above the national average and we would save an additional $179 billion over 10 year. Without even working up a sweat we save $210 billion over 10 years. THEN we can start cutting out non-essential programs and departments completely and before long, walla! We are balanced and can begin paying down the debt.

Couldnt let a post by “barking frog” pass without some clarity. You said something that “the right to bear arms preceded the constitution”…quick history lesson. The Constitution was written first…only later did the “Bill of Rights” pass..which are the 10 Amendments to said Constitution…which includes the 2nd Amendment about the need for militias, and hence the right to bear arms so that, oh..you know, we had NO STANDING ARMY to protect the new Country we called the UNITED States of America

For my part, I like to snark and make smartazz comments, but I *prefer* a polite, adult conversation where ideas are tossed out and taken up for discussion, where polite criticism doesn’t mean calling one’s post-opponent names and where the participants don’t all look like they’re cruising for heart attacks and strokes.

I think that both sides are better served when they articulate their own beliefs and opinions — and where, if someone has a trust issue with another poster, they say so and say why. This whole notion of ‘this is what YOU think, liberal b@st@rd’ and ‘i know this is what you want, you conservative jackazz’ doesn’t advance the discussion and it doesn’t lead to anything positive.

Most people understand that Congress spends the money and now has to pay the bills. The problem is how to you stop the debt from continuing to climb and reach unsustainable amounts, leveraging our children and grandchildren’s future? Does anyone, Lib or Conservative, think we can continue to borrow at the rate we are? Congress can’t reign in spending, so just saying it is a silly debate is misleading and disingenuous by Jay. the Debt Ceiling debate is not about paying the old bills, it is about slowing down the increasing debt and eliminating the deficit for next year and the years after. Dems and Libs are avoiding the crushing fiscal reality and kicking the can down the road. What will it take to get them to do the things necessary? you can take 100% of the income of the top 1% and still run a deficit. So that red herring debate was won by the Dems- and it raised enough to pay for 6 days of Gov’t spending. The only way things get done is by leveraging raising the debt ceiling so that we aren’t back here again. Are the libs ok with the debt being at $22T+ by the 2016? You can say the Reps had a role in running it up and i would agree. So what do we do now? just keep raising the ceiling without getting spending under control? What happened to the balanced approach?

Adam, what is your solution to “stop the madness”.

Not Adam, but there’s nothing we can do to stop it short of shutting America down and selling it, in pieces, to the highest bidders. Violence is part of who we are, and these things have been going on for a long time. The only difference is the speed in which they become public knowledge due to technology.

The best thing we can do is train ourselves to be ready with an escape when the time arises. Unless you continuously train for active shooter scenarios, your fine motor skills (most people use when shooting at a range) will disappear faster than a dollar at a strip joint. If you don’t have that automatic response trained into your gross motor skills, you’re nothing more than a target at a shooting gallery if you don’t get out the way fast.

B) Sorry, I have to disagree with you here: your comment about steroids not helping the hand-eye coordination is spot on… and almost exactly what Bonds claimed earlier… and is totally irrelevant. Steroids took what would have been, at best, a pop-up in the middle of the outfield (and exactly what the pitcher was trying to get him to do) and gave McGuire, Bonds, Sosa, and all the other scum the extra strength to push the ball over the fence. I am a knowledgeable individual and had family playing in the minor leagues at the time, and I had no CLUE what was happening. I just thought these guys were eating better, and had more natural ability than my family members and they DESERVED to be there. I now know they cheated to stay up in the majors and were keeping better quality players in the minors by their actions. Juicin’ the ball, the bat, or the player, or the politician stuffing the ballot box is CHEATING. The object of rules and officiating is to prevent the other guy from falsely achieving what they couldn’t do legitimately. They should expunge EVERY record of every player who juiced.

Being as they weren’t politicians and only cheated instead of committing a felony, I wouldn’t put them in jail… wait a minute… let me thing about that…making little kids believe they were “the good guys” and people to be emulated; destroying records that stood for decades and said records were achieved by the skill and efforts of people who gave their best every day… maybe jail time is something to consider…

I understand your point, and I used to feel the exact same way until I had a revelation about something. Is taking steroids any different than eating chicken, pork, or beef that’s been overstuffed with growth hormones? When you were young, how many 5th graders were 6ft tall, 200lbs, and ran a 4.3 forty yard dash?

I don’t condone anybody purposefully taking any kind of banned supplement as a way to cheat to get ahead. That said, I think that most any kid under the age of 35 has been exposed quite a bit to growth hormones and may benefit as a result.

I think that’ only part of the problem. Even if I trained 10 hrs/day, I wouldn’t want to be holding a hand gun when law enforcement arrives.

I’d add to that, I’d be afraid that if I knocked the gun out of the hand of the killer and shot him/her that some “hero” would show up and shoot me.

That’s repeated a lot. Unfortunately, it’s inaccurate.

To review:

Congress authorizes spending thru the appropriations process. They pass spending bills which the president signs. It authorizes agencies to spend up to a certain amount of money for specific things.

Agencies begin spending as soon as funds are available.

Congress can fund that spending thru tax receipts or thru borrowing. If they won’t fund the spending thru tax receipts, that leaves thru borrowing. Spending in excess of revenue creates the yearly deficits and these are added together to make the debt.

There’s this thing called the debt limit that Congress has to raise when they’ve borrowed what they’ve already authorized. Notice how they authorize spending that’ll take them past the limit, then they have to raise the limit? I know, it’s inefficient. But welcome to Congress. They’re inefficient.

So not raising the limit will not ’slow the increasing debt.” Congress can do that by appropriating less money OR by raising revenue thru taxation. But the hoopla over the debt ceiling is mere theatrics and political grandstanding by Republicans in Congress.

And it’s also a very effective diversionary tactic that people are all to ready to buy into as a way to ’stop the spending.’

When the country decided, in the Bush administration, to empty the treasury to save a few obviously ungrateful Wall Street banks under some sense they were saving a world that seemed to suffer even after the check was written, we compromised the firewall between the universe and home. You see we have had bank failures before, lived through them, rich people lose these rear ends, stupidity was punished, but we have never had the disease of the day infect the foundation of government. We have helped the down trodden individual but here we helped the wealthy, make side bets that had little to do with the actually product they were betting on. We backed a day in Las Vegas or more like a decade in Las Vegas by the cronies of the Republican Party.

There is an intersection of the economics where the mask falls off the creditability of the US Treasury and the economy at large. This country’s credit is a large part of who we are. Hey, if the GOP wants to sink what’s left of our economy by holding it hostage with the silly debt ceiling, then rational people in the government have to come up with a strategy to take away their toy because GOP games with the debt ceiling is the same as letting children play with a loaded gun. You have to do something. If it means minting a $1 trillion coin, so be it. Whatever it takes to avoid negotiating with economic terrorists who also happen to have the maturity of Honey Boo Boo.

Revenues will still be coming in and those revenues more than cover the debt obligation. One estimate would be that current revenues would cover 60 to 70% of current spending and debt obligations are only about 6 or 7% of current revenue. And lets not forget that Obama was on record saying that the debt increase should not be raised while he was a senator and Bush was president. For those of you that say raising the debt ceiling is a must please explain where you were on this when Obama was against it.

As far as the availability of guns in the home, aside from suicides, the *accidental* shootings are often the result of mamma’s boyfriend sleeping on the couch with a gun hidden under the cushions in case one of his enemies find out where he is *staying.* He goes off on some business or other, forgets the gun, and one of the kids finds it. I think you may be confusing terms. Even the most ardent Fox/Hannity listener will tell you we borrow about 40% of what we ’spend.’ to say “debt obligations are only about 6 or 7% of current revenue.” kinda sounds like ‘the amount we owe on interest on the debt for period N is 7% of current revenue estimates.”

Anyhow, it appears you may be mixing a couple of concepts, so a cite would help to sort it out.

We are borrowing 30 to 40 cents of every dollar we spend creating new debt. But we are told that unless we raise the debt ceiling we cannot pay debt obligations on current debt. We will have the revenue to cover our obligations on current debt. That does not mean we will not incur new debt, it means we are being lied to when someone says we can’t cover current debt obligations unless the debt limit is raised. The debt limit just allows for new debt and has nothing to do with debt incurred already.

Not raising the debt ceiling would not be the end of the world. Government would still be able to meet its past debt obligations with $2.+ trillion a year it collects, just wouldn’t be able to spend any more than it collects. Wait a minute, that makes too much sense. Force the government to balance its budget? Pish posh. Just cut defense, Medicare, SS, and other entitleyments by about 1/3 and we are there. It can be done.

The law does not have to remove every single DUI offender from the road in order for it to reduce DUI offenses or deaths caused by DUI’s. Further, there are more changes than simply a DUI law at work to reduce DUI offenses and their negative impact. These are multi-variable issues with multi-variable solutions and the lump sum effects are what count–not some isolated variable at some given point in time.

What a nut! I got a confession to make. I been drawing SS and getting covered by Medicare for the past four years, and it’s Sweeeeeeet! Matter of fact they even raise my SS every year when a current income year kicks out a low income year. I don’t know how I’d make it if I had to live on my salary alone. And there’s plenty more out there just like me.

So keep yo mouth shut, Wait a Minute. Mind your own business. I say let the people out there think that all the older folks are barely getting by on their measly SS.

at some point the money has to get paid back- interest rates are low right now, so what happens when this short term debt has to be refinanced at higher interest rates, which will certainly be at some point in the future. So if we keep adding to the debt every year, and then interest rates go up, we will have a bigger problem. the debt ceiling will have to be raised to satisfy the debts Congress has authorized. But how or who is going to stop the problem from continuing? Sometimes you have to use a harsh tactic to get the message across to people who continue to think we can keep going down the same path. The Libs don’t even acknowledge the problem and think somehow we will spend and tax our way out of this problem. That won’t work, never has and isn’t now. So the debt ceiling negotiations are a way of bringing needed attention to a problem that to solve will mean alienating low information voters and have Congresspeople risk not being re-elected. America is having a hard time dealing with the reality of the situation- nobody is willing to give up “theirs”

Listen. I run with a crowd and a few are pretty serious drinkers.

If you dont think for one second that not getting a DUI and designating a driver aren’t top priority for those folks because they know exactly what hell awaits them if the get a DUI

Then your are nuts.

People lose their jobs. I think in a lot of towns they run your name in the paper and mugshot.

I know one guy who had to get a device in his car that he had to blow in every so often or the car would shut off.

You’ve lost this one. Id quit digging.

Tougher laws & Awareness and other things have led to the drop in fatalities.

The same could be applied to the gun problem in this country.

There hasn’t been a mass shooting since.

When you have basically a homogeneous society it’s a lot easier than one like ours.

The report also states “The shooter may have had up to 20 shotgun rounds in his pockets.” How about banning all high capacity pockets in boy’s pants?
